Title: How did you discover Frost*?
Post by: mr_john on December 16, 2010, 10:51:05 AM
I was wracking my brains a couple of days ago trying to remember how I first heard of the band. My love of Prog really developed in the past 10 years which led me to discovering a bunch of "modern" prog bands such as Porcupine Tree, Pineapple Thief, Big Big Train, Spocks Beard, Dream Theatre and Frost. I know a few of those bands have been going a good few years but to me they were new prog!!

I have a feeling that I must have read about Frost* somewhere but can't remember where or why. Certainly remember checking out the Wikipedia page. Most likely a review or mention in Classic Rock or some other prog-related magazine/website....

Anywho - how about you?

TBE playing pocket sun on youtube. And then a mention in Portnoy's top 10 albums of the year. And then BLM happened.

Milliontown was my first review on italian unprogged.com and it was suggested by a friend of mine who loves the band! :)

I discovered that a colleague at work was similarly Prog-minded during a car journey from Munich airport to Regensburg in 2006. We'd not worked together before so out poured the tales of Genesis and Yes gigs, etc.
When we got to the topic of (then) currently still active bands, he pointed me towards Arena and IQ and the names Mitchell and Jowitt were mentioned with reference to their talent and appearance in more than one band.

While digging a bit deeper into these new finds, reference to a new project called "Frost*" popped up and a clip of BLM was heard....the steady and on-going slide into madness, fun and biscuit abuse began from that point.

I will always be grateful to my ProgPal for "waking me up" to the current Prog scene - his name is Ritchie Whitwell and he appears in the Supporting Cast for the Derby DVD shoot cos he was there too. :)

I was looking at porcupine tree albums on facebook and was looking out for new music at the time so spotted milliontown in the 'people who bought this also bought' section. I thought it looked interesting so I gave it a listen on napster. I've been hooked ever since! This was probably a good 3 or 4 years ago now.

back in 2005 (2006?), Black Light Machine was made available for free somewhere, and someone on www.auralmoon.com (http://www.auralmoon.com) linked to it.  I downloaded it and have never looked back.  it came at a stressful time in my life, and I must have listened to Milliontown a million times that year. and I still do!  it's right at the top of my desert island list.

seeing the band live (and meeting them!) at Rosfest 2009 was a memory I will cherish always.  that and meeting all you fine folks!

Early 2007, I believe. It was one of those iTunes "people who bought this also bought THIS" things. I listened to the clips from Milliontown and bought it immediately. Some time later, I bought the CD, too.

Twas during a particularly manic game of following the 'People who bought this also bought this' trail on Amazon that led me to Milliontown. (I think I started off at one of the Spock's albums, but I can't be sure.)

And to be honest I went with it blind - no MP3 snippets, just trust in the fact that like-minded proglodites liked it.

It was much, much later it occurred to me to look for a forum too :)

Strangely I was just thinking about this the other day.
I remember my very 1st listen anything Frost*, but no idea how I arrived at it.

It was the YouTube video where Jem is describing the solo in Black Light Machine, and mentions Screaming On The Beaches (I think?) by It Bites... I can't find the video on YouTube anymore, it was uploaded before the planetfrost account was created.

For those that haven't seen this video, it's Jem describing the creative processes behind BLM, how it started off, how that evolved and the like, all with sound clips from his trusty Mac and him playing parts live on-camera... A little Steve Vai impersonation (of playing style - but on keyboard), all wrapped up in a package by a cheeky chappy adorned with a lovely English accent.

It took a little work to figure out the band (I had to google Black Light Machine to get it ), and then I must admit that I downloaded Milliontown from the Internets for free - but worry not, I have since paid for it and EIMA, tshirts, gigs and whatnot. ;)

I'd love to know the path I took from whatever I was watching on YouTube to Jem deconstructing a song!

I just checked to be sure I wasn't imagining this but it is correct.  I actually ordered the Milliontown CD on the day of its release (24 July 2006) without having heard a note of it, purely on the strength of a) who was on it (JM & JJ) and b) the glowing pre-release reviews of people whose musical taste I shared and trusted.  As soon as the piano riff of Hyperventilate came on, I knew that this had been a good purchase, by BLM I was won over and by the end of Milliontown, I knew my world was now officially a better place!  8-)

Symbiant circle time -
I was at Music Live watching a Roland demo by Craig Blundell, and chatting to him afterwards when along comes a guy wanting to interview drummers for some research he's doing. Craig agrees to do the questionnaire later, but then points out another 'famous' drummer in the shape of TBE. The first question was 'What heads do you use?' to which TBE replied, 'round ones'.
A few weeks later (after some intensive googling) I bumped into him at an IB gig (the first tour with JM) and promptly started studying with him for the next 9-12 months. During this time he switched me on to a lot of stuff (Porcupine Tree, Spoks Beard etc) but also made mention of a project he was involved with called Frost*.
Promptly downloaded from iTunes, closely followed by purchasing a hard copy, and the rest, as they say, is history.

(the circle now being completed by Blunders joining the band.............) Spooky eh?

Hmm stories of It Bites reminds me that I think another link for me was the Kino album (on which JM plays of course) so I might have used Wikipedia to discover more of his work and so on....

Interesting that it seems most of us came via word of motuh or 'users also bought' type scenarios. I suppose that element of discovering a band without all the internet-hype/magazine coverage etc adds to the family spirit that permeates this board and the band!

At least I think it's family spririt.... could be the essence of stale Hob Nobs to be honest  :D

I think it was relatively shortly after the release of Milliontown - a thread on the now-defunct Genesis forum told me I should check them out, so I did.

Was very pleased to find that John Mitchell was on it, since I'd loved the Kino album... embarrassingly my Mitchell-fandom led me to believe that he was the lead vocalist all the way through, something which I carried on believing until about the 4th listen. I can remember getting a bit annoyed after the first couple of plays- "I wish they hadn't put quite so many effects on his voice all the way through, sometimes you can barely even tell it's him singing..."

Anyway, I loved it from the very first play, I'd never heard anything quite like it. And still haven't, to be honest!

Fro me, it starts with the original It Bites in the late 80s/early 90s, then Dream Theater, Spock's Beard, The Flower Kings, Transatlantic, new It Bites and, via John Mitchell, Frost*.  I've been a Genesis/Yes/Rush fan since the 70s, thanks to my brother playing it all at loud volume from his room!

When Frost* were supporting Dream Theater back when, I saw the name and went to wikipedia. Completely blanked what other claims to prog everyone had (until a lot lot later, silly me  ) and looked for album and track listings. Then a quick dash to youtube, First song was Hyperventilate, and I was hooked.

Then I heard Black Light Machine. My ears didn't know what to do with themselves, and I instantly was a fan (and was looking forward to Frost* more than I was Dream Theater!)

Showed the guys to my brother who was coming with me, and his first reaction was: "That John Mitchell guy looks a lot like Rich Hall!"

It Bites, Arena, IQ, Kino all were "discovered" by me earlier this year, can't believe I waited this long!

I first heard Black Light Machine on a free CD that came with Classic Rock in 2006. I listened to it and thought it was beserk, but brilliant. Really brilliant. I remember reading an article on them in said magazine where Jem had said something like they weren't going to do any more as they were all too busy. So I was sad, put them out of mind and continued living for about a year...

In 2007, my Brother (who was living in Leeds at the time) bought me tickets to see Spock's Beard as a present. I'd discovered them at the same time I'd discovered Frost* (from the same source) and was jolly excited. A short while later, I was told that they were going to be supported by a band called Frost*. "Oh, I've got a song by them! It was quite good." I chirped. I dug it out and played it again to remind myself. Cor blimey. That did the trick. Now, find them on the Internet. What else have they done...?

Then I found the Frost* Reports. And that was that. It was the episode where Jem takes on an 808 drum machine, which I reckon was a perfect starting point.    :D

I'm pretty sure I discovered them through ProgArchives (great website to find prog music for those who don't know). I then bought Milliontown and listened to the album the whole way through. I was pretty amazed. I still remember listening to the keyboard solo in Black Light Machine over and over again. Best keyboard solo I've ever heard.

For me it was a guy on Amazon who had reviewed various other 'interesting' progressive bands.  His description of Milliontown led me to search on Progarchives, where I found BLM; and from there I was hooked.

The guy's name: D B Sillars.  Check out his Amazon reviews - very insightful.  Unfortunately he hasn't done any for a long while.

What a brilliant question.  Like Mouse I picked up what was for me a rare purchase of Classic Rock's Special Prog edition and the CD "Shine On".  Had Porcupine Tree, Spocks Beard, Flower Kings and BLM tucked away near the end.

Life was strange at the time late in 2006- had to move over the road while the Russians came in to underpin our house.  I was deep in Radio 2 land at the time.  1976 I'd been listening to Yes & Genesis.  2006 I had stuff by Snow Patrol, Embrace and Katie Melua.

Liked BLM enough to have a look at Frost* on Myspace - heard Hyperventilate and the last part of Milliontown and BAM.  Went to see them support The Flower Kings at La Scala - if this was their last gig then I had to be there.  Hyperventilate, BLM and Milliontown - all over in 40 minutes.  They were all in the bar afterwards, so politely butting into Jem's conversation, got him to sign my CD, and wished him the best with whatever he choose to do in future, and said that I'd keep an eye out for him.

My renewed love of most things prog all springs from Frost* - and now via Wilf I've discovered Moon Safari...

I hadn't heard of Frost* before I went to see Dream Theater at Southampton. Me and my friend got there late, just as Frost* were kicking off I was buying a DT t-shirt, went into the main hall and stood there for the set, but the sound was so crap that I didn't really hear anything (apart from Jem's intro of "this next song is about the dangers of time travel").
But then they played The Other Me, and I couldn't help but sing along even though I'd never heard it before!
I then pretty much forgot about them for a few months, and it was only when I got bored with my record collection that I went in search of something new, and the name Frost* suddenly popped into my head.
I went to my local record store and ordered Milliontown after I'd found out the name of it on the web at school, and it now turns out that I was very lucky to have been able to buy it (and later, the special edition of EIMA) for a tenner!
And that was it- I was hooked.

Someone mentioned on the Kino forum that JM was involved in another project and posted a link to Jem's blog.
I wasn't too taken with BLM the first time I heard it (it sounded a bit over-produced for my liking), but I knew it would work well live.

As with a few others here, it was the cover disk of the original Classic Rock Presnts... Prog... a few listens to some other stuff later (was P2P in those days for reviewing stuff, YouTube or other streaming services these days though) and the album was ordered... think I bought a couple of other bands on that CD too about that time.

At some point in 2006 my prog pusher gave me a copy of Milliontown.  I was not into prog at the time so put it to one side and forgot to listen to it.  I remember picking up my husband from the train station.  The train was late, so bored of waiting, I put the CD on.  Immediately hooked.

I too, like Mouse and L33VEY, got the Shine On CD in Classic Rock Magazine, which was my first introduction to modern prog. However, so distracted was I with PT's Mother And Child Divided (track 1 on the CD) that BLM fell a wee bit by the wayside. What that CD did do for me was kick-start me on a journey through bands like Porcupine Tree and Dream Theater that eventually led me to start lurking around Mike Portnoy's forum, where I saw Milliontown recommended repeatedly. When I finally got the album, it was just a matter of Hyperventilate kicking in for me to be sold! To think I could've got here so much quicker if the tracklisting of that magazine CD had been a little different...

How did I discover Frost? Well, I have been an IQ, Porcupine Tree and Marillion fan since I re-discovered the progscene in the early 90s (I knew a lot of the classic 70s and some of the 80s stuff already). I witnessed the arrival of Arena pretty close (was at the infamoous semi-acoustic performance at the Dutch Marillion fanclub day) and was thrilled to see John Jowitt joining them. When The Visitor was released I was struck by the guitarplaying magic of John Mitchell and IIRC I have even seen him perform with The Urbane at that time. So when a project was announced including JM, PT (of Marillion), JB and CM (former PT drummer) and they would do a few shows before the album was released I went to that gig and was pretty blown away especially by both JM's vocal abillities. Also surprising to discover that not Chris Maitland was playing with them but Steve Hughes (now former Big Big Train drummer) who was really stellar. Always a bit of a letdown that he didn't play with them on the subsequent short Kino tour. I'd rather hear him then the lumberjack style drummer they got on the subsequent gigs... really spoiled it for me.

So... since I was working for a progrock website and always trying at that time to keep tabs on the whole scene I heard quickly about a new project that would involve JM, TBE and JJ with some guy who was writing poptunes for a living. Especially that last bit was very intriguing because I (still) like good poptunes and thought he might bring something interesting to the progtable. Well, after I heard that BLM guitarsolo somewhere online I was hooked and IIRC bought the album almost immediately after release.

Been into prog for years but really only old Genesis, King Crimson but nothing really ticked my boxes since about 1978 (second time around obviously - I was only 5 in 1978!!).  A few exceptions, THRAK, some early Porcupine Tree, It Bites etc. but although I still loved the old stuff I'd lost track.

Think it was sometime in summer 2007.  Had the opportunity to get hold of an OASYS and while digging around on t'internet researching it I fell across Rudess on YouTube.  To be honest I thought "what a cock" and got put off the whole thing but one of the youtube linked vids was a frost report.  I can't remember exactly which one it was but I remember thinking three things:
1 - This bloke is just about the best keyboard player I've ever seen (now I know I've removed the "just about")
2 - I'm sure I sat next to him on a train last week
3 - He's bloody hilarious too (da da da da da da da ...)

I spent a few very very sleepless nights watching evrything I could find and bought a copy of Milliontown ASAP.

Will never forget sitting in my studio listening to the opening couple of minutes of Hyperventilate.  Never had an awakening like it or ever really heard anything quite so mindblowing since (with the possible exception of TDL).  Been a massive Frostie ever since and also then discovered all sorts of other modern prog: Kino, IQ, Magenta, etc.  Even re-discovered Pocupine Tree's newer stuff.

BTW - I did get the OASYS and although I can't play like Rudess I do hope that I don't appear to be quite as much of a cock when I'm sitting at it :-)

Quote from: "SmartUK"Reading through all the posts, I see I need to mention Porcupine Tree - Gavin Harrison is one of the most amazing yet musical drummers out there.  Blunders reminds me of him a lot.  Kino too - I loved the live gig on Rockpalast.

Your post makes it 10 mentions of PT in this thread alone never mind the rest of the forum

Gosh that makes me very happy indeed.  :)  2 years ago I had just finished the first version of that. Looking forward to Little Big Planet 2 in January - the potential it offers is just mind-blowing.

Quote from: "Drarok"Strangely I was just thinking about this the other day.

Yeah does anyone else know where to find this video? Is it even still around?

A guy I started chatting with online around 2007 sent me the Milliontown album (illegally, yes :o ) I just instantly loved that album, and have been playing it very often ever since. Can't get tired of it. And then EIMA came and blew me away.. and then TDL.. etc etc etc..

I'm a hardcore Frost* fan... except I'm not in England and can't go to the gigs.

Hi there,

It's my first post, after quite a while lurking and enjoying the various conversations here, so I'll start with the important stuff.

For me the king of biscuits is the plain chocolate hob-nob (milk chocolate hob-nobs just don't cut it).  There is also a biscuit where I live (Spain) called a 'Napolitana' which is kind of a cinnamon crispy thin, and very nice with a cuppa.

I first heard of Frost* via Spock's Beard.  When Nick D'Virgilio guested at Rosfest, he posted it on the SB web-site.  I subscribe to e-music.com (which is how I first heard SB) and so I looked on there and there was EIMA.  The next month when my downloads became available I downloaded the album and was completely lost.  It's been on almost permanent rotation in the car, together with Milliontown, which I subsequently bought, followed by TPE (with the tee-shirt :D ).  I also discovered PlanetFrost on youtube.  That got me hooked completely and I don't know how many times I've watched September B - a classic.

Sadly, living in Spain, I have not as yet had an opportunity to see Frost* live, but I live in hope.

Cheers

Lots of excellent bands mentioned here (PT, SB, Genesis, Marillion) and lots of excellent biscuit references too. Well done everyone!

BLM seems to be a fav. song amongst a number of people. Could it be the MC Hammer- esque keyboard solo?    (BTW I have MC Hammer on my iPod so shut-it or I'll set the dogs on ya... or something else masculine and macho).

My first post too. Again been a long time lurker and as I didn't feel I had anything interesting to say I never got around to registering!!

My favourite biscuit has to be Oreo's  :D  closely followed by fruit shortcake!

As for how I got into Frost*. I have been a longtime fan of It bites. When it bites.com got the newer forum going before the 2006 tour with JM. there was some link to a free download of BLM. (I believe with programmed drums, rather than TBE playing) I was hooked from the first listen. I actually thought it was JM who had written it and suggested that It bites should play it on that tour. Jem soon put me right though

Got to see them first time at the DVD shoot. Awesome band, can't wait to see the end result.

I half reluctently went the Dream Theater gig in leeds where Frost* supported, and didn't know anything about prog. Then I watched some of the Frost* reports before the gig and got hooked! By the time I went to the gig I was more excited to see Frost* than DT!
And from there I discovered IB, Kino and Spocks etc.
I kind of branched out into Meshuggah, Scale the Summit and Opeth types of stuff as well from this :P
If it wasn't for Jem I'd still be listening to Glam and Power Metal, not that there's anything wrong with that ;)

Well I've been a Marillion fan since I was 14 (I'm 42 now) and into Genesis, Pallas etc. etc. but dipped out of the music scene to do the family thing, kids etc. Then got back into Marillion around about the time when Anoraknophobia came out and really got back into them in a big way and met loads of people and made loads of new friends. One of which happened to be a certain John Merrick who, over the last few years has been reminding me of all the bands I used to like and some of the bands that have snook past me while I was sleeping. I was asked to go to the last Octobers Summers End gig by Mr Merrick to see a good friend of ours (Mr Jim Sanders) in a band called Tinyfish. It also happened to be the same night that a certain super prog band called Defence of the Realm were playing who happened to have a certain bass player (Pete Trewavas) playing with them that night also. So this looked like a no brainer as it was only an hour up the road and a quick tunnel under the border guards to get in (from Wales see, mun).

Saw Tinyfish and they blew me away....absolutely superb. Then it went totally F**Kin nuts with air raids and phone calls from the Prog Traitor Phil Collins and some of the best "Modern" prog I've ever heard. Well that night we had so much FUN watchin that gig, laughing out loud in some places. I met JM and JG and his brother SG all in the same night and had an absolute blast. This breath of fresh air sparked me into buying all that was available from Frost and to get tickets for the Derby Gig (Blimey it was cold !!, but well worth the trip). I'll be on the lookout for any gigs from now on.

The End. or is it?
Mwhahahahahaha

Through a convoluted path...

The 21st Century Schizoid Band were playing in Cambridge a few years back and I got chatting to their support act, a solo bass player called Steve Lawson. I then went to various of his gigs, including one that he did as a duo with Theo Travis. I then started going to see Theo Travis gigging (his jazz quartet comes highly recomended, btw), and was intrigued by the prog band he played in, The Tangent, so went to see them at a couple of CRS gigs. Then I noticed that the Tangent were playing at Summers End 2008, with a band called Frost* just on before them, and that I could get to that gig reasonably easily as I was in Wales that weekend. So I did a bit of research into Frost*, liked what I heard, joined the Frost* forum, and I think it's fair to say that I have not been the same since!

Frost* were one of those happy internet discoveries. I bought MIDI controllers earlier in the year and hated them, so I started researching proper synths for my band stuff, which led to Juno Stage and then to Fantom G and then to Fantom G videos by Jem which led to Frost* reports, which led to weeing myself laughing which led to buying EIMA and Milliontown which led to the best song I have discovered this year: Hyperventilate! The Frost reports are very entertaining, great to see someone sharing the creative process, but I get a little scared I may wee my pants laughing each time.  :P

I first discovered Frost* by being linked to Toys.  I had no idea who the band was (nor do I recall how I was linked there in the first place) but I started listening to it thinking it was an off-kilter pop song.  There was something I liked about it, but I didn't know what - considering that I was in the mindset that it wasn't written by a band I would listen to regularly.

Well, I listened to Toys enough to become curious of the other material.  I downloaded Dear Dead Days and was blown away.  But, I still wasn't sure what I was listening to.  I figured all the keyboards and crazy arpeggios were faked in the studio.  I figured this was a band sort of like Muse.  Lots of arpeggios.  Most of them synthesized with an arpeggio button.  But, I kept listening anyway.

Well, it was about this time that I learned of Milliontown.  I downloaded the album and listened to the whole thing in one sitting.  There was no going back.  I knew what I was listening to.  And it was intended for the ears of Gods.

Frost* has been my favorite band since.

I heard about Milliontown, then I went onto the MySpazz and heard the second sampler (I think) for EIMA, the one that had 1976 in it and the whole thing made me cream hard, I must have listened to that a hundred times while waiting for the album, then I started watching the Frost* Reports, got Milliontown then when EIMA came out I was a million percent in

I now own far too much Frost* trinketry lol

Morning All.

I first became aware of Frost* when a certain Mr Roine Stolt mentioned on the Flower Kings mailing list that he was listening to and impressed by them. I had never heard of them before, but as Roine is a bit of a prog super-hero I noted the name and bought Milliontown shortly after.

I am ashamed to say it sat on the shelf for some time before I listened to it, but once I did that was it. I was hooked. What cool tunes  8-)

Since then I obviously have bought all the Frost* CDs I can (I am an old-fashioned chap who still thinks a real CD beats a load of 0s and 1s stored on a computer), and am eagerly awaiting the live DVD. Sadly I missed the Islington gig back in December due to the pesky snö - I was gutted. Well; next time, hopefully.

Cheerio,

Keith.

Another strange incident happened late one night when I was listening to my Porcupine tree Pandora station..  It was Probable 2am... Was just about to head off to bed then this song came on. It was indeed BLM...  mind you, this was just days after seeing Jem, Laying on the floor of the Cube Smelling a 38 yr old Drum Machine.  I Must confess.. Since we are all family here.. ;)   I Wept during the "bridge" middle part in BLM, I Mean Balling like a 3yr old that just had his ass tanned.. and still do! Then, when Jem started with the Glitch loop editing, I Literally LOST my Fucking Mind!  My Musical Taste has yet again done a 180 back to Prog.  Since Trent Reznor corrupted me with "Pretty Hate Machine" I have been More industrial Minded, Still throwing the Yes, Rush, ELP, Genesis etc.  on at times, But, I Have Not Listened to NIN in over a year! Crazy! And I have said this before, but, I truly Believe Jem will go down in history as one of the Greatest Composers of all Time!!  Just Imagine what Bach, Motzart, Hell, Even Bethoven Would do with our technology today!??     Just something to ponder! :)   Sorry for the Rant!!

Well I guess i should add how I heard.

I was driving back to school from Arizona In March of 2010 with a friend, when a song played from his Ipod.  I REALLY Liked it (I think it was Hyperventilate) and I asked him who it was.  He said Frost*

Skip ahead to June of that year, and I remember a band I heard on a car ride.  I was racking my brain trying to remember the name, and all I could remember was the name had something to do with a form of water.  So I searched the interwebz for bands like Rain, Dew, etc.  Then I came across Frost*, and that was the end of that.  Bought the albums off of Itunes and it's been one of my top listened to bands.

It was several years ago now.  I was listening to Aural Moon (prog rock radio station) on the web, and either Milliontown or Hyperventilate was playing - can't remember which one.  So, I did some research, spotted the album and a few free downloads of Milliontown somewhere, so then bought it and have been hooked ever since.

Not managed any gigs yet, but will do for sure at some point.

Hey all. Sort of appropriate this will be my first ever post here, don't you think?

I discovered Frost* via a friend. One I'd known from a long time back, but who I was just starting to really get to know. We were talking about our various musical tastes, and discovered quite a few overlaps- Dream Theater was a big one for both of us. Eventually he said point-blank, "Well, if you like crazy prog, it doesn't get much crazier than Frost*."
He then dropped the entirety of Milliontown into a zip file and emailed it to me. I bought it the very next day- partly because it was quite possibly the single greatest record I had ever heard, and partly because I wanted it in higher audio quality to play over the big family sound system. I have since done this- sounds even more incredible.

So my first dose of Frost*ed goodness was Milliontown, in its entirety. I guess you could really say the first I heard of Jem and the boys was Hyperventilate. To this day, whenever I want to introduce someone to Frost*, the two tunes I send them are Hyperventilate and Toys off of Experiments. Hyperventilate, because I feel it perfectly encapsulates all the best flavours of Frost*, and Toys, because it's a good smattering of the sort of sounds achieved on Experiments In Mass Appeal. I have not once had anyone come back from listening and say they didn't like either.

That about does it then. Cheers.

Hi all, first post but been loving frost for some time now.

A few years back, arriving at University I happened across a Dream Theater fan, and I loved it such that I had difficulty conceiving something better, more entertaining, and more fun than when I saw them live.

Then I remember listening to some random prog podcast (Papa-j or something? A quick google seems to confirm this) and on came Dear Dead Days. I was literally stunned by the power, by the insanity, and more importantly, the fun contained within. The second it finished I skipped back to the beginning, a couple of times I think, loving every second.

This came at a bit of a down moment in my life, but this musical moment of zen instantly raised my mood, compounded by the stumbling on the frost reports when trying to find just who this crazy bunch called 'Frost*' were (The 'crazy' being confirmed by the content of these videos), and was dragged down the rabbit hole. That night I fired up amazon, stretching my lowly student budget for a CD shopping spree (Also picking up some other interesting albums from Spocks Beard, IQ and the like).

Now I have graduated and in the 'real' world, I hope to get the necessary alignment of location, time and money and see them live, hopefully helped by me being a little more centrally located (As in, near London, and not in the bleak northeast).

Thanks for your kind words.

And my biscuit? What a question, just so many to choose from.
It has gotta be bourbons.. Or those chocolate caramel digestives (Great with a glass of milk and the biscuit dissolves, leaving the chewy caramel). Oh, can't forget custard creams....
Thanks, I will have to go to sainsburys now! Damn you all!  :x

I first discovered frost after seeing Mr. Godfrey in a video with Jordan Rudess on Jordan's website, I think they were jamming on iphones. I then checked out this English nutter on youtube and when I had picked myself up off the floor I surfed over to amazon's mp3 site and bought Milliontown, with EIMA soon to follow.
I saw them live the first time in December at Islington o2 and was so impressed I bought tickets for defence of the realm the following week at the Peel. Cant wait till the next one!!!

I also checked out the amazing mr Mitchell when he joined It Bites, I also remember reading an article in Classic Rock about Frost*,must've been 2006. Then, I was checking out John Twelvehawks website which had a jukebox on it . Scrolling through the song list I came to Hyperventilate by Frost*. It said " The true revolution starts inside, nothing better than a wonderful instrumental to give us some insight" So, clicked on the link and there were Jem and Dec playing this splendid piece of music.I also watched all the Frost* reports and then there was no turning back.  Mrs Davejd said I became obssesed , even going so far as to have our bedroom decorated with Frost* wallpaper, matching Frost* duvet and pillowcase set.  Oh, and Frostie pyjamas. I see a number of outcomes including inhaling entire Twix and/or a lot if red hot tea rather suddenly...

There is a choking hazard but a good firm grip should counteract any sliding. *sentence courtesy of the writers of the 'Carry On' series*

In all seriousness the density of the Twix caramel and biscuit combo ensures that the drink is not too hot on arrival plus it also makes it gooey and tasty!! I would imagine 1 or maybe 2 inhales is all you need for melty-chocolatey-biscuity goodness!

John Young....Can't remember how I arrived at JY, but JJ played with him and through JJ, onto Jadis & IQ

After a blinding flash of inspiration, and Tom would hate this, Frost* have 2 links to ASIA, and I can trace my Frost* roots back to school.
In some of our music lessons we were allowed to bring in one of our albums, the big round crackly scratchy plastic things with huge pictures and lots of writing. My mate brought in Trilogy by Emerson, Lake & Palmer. (Note the Aaron Copland connection, so thats actually 3, not 2). Carl Palmer went on to form ASIA with Buggles and Yes man Geoff Downes, he was replaced briefly by the aforementioned John Young. John Wetton, also of ASIA toured with Geoff Downes and was very ably assisted by John Mitchell, in my opinion John (Mitchell) held the gig together.

See, told you Tom would be gutted

Mike, your mention of Asia prompted me to work my trail back...

I met John Young at a concert in Rotherham in 1998 or 99, A couple of years later, he introduced me to John Wetton, and through him I met John Mitchell and John Beck, who were playing in his band at the time. Shortly afterwards, they formed Kino, and the first I knew of Frost* was via the Kino forum.

I never did let on to JW that I wasn't a fan of Asia

John Wetton new solo album
John Wetton will release his sixth solo album, Raised In Captivity, through Frontiers Records on 1st July throughout Europe and 12th July in the US. The album features many guest appearances including Steve Hackett, Robert Fripp and Steve Morse...
"Raised In Captivity" celebrates yet another milestone in an extraordinary life, a stunning collection of songs reinforcing a career of over 40 years during which John Wetton has created a legacy as one of the greatest singers, musicians and songwriters ever.  Respected worldwide by fans and musical peers alike, Wetton's career included a significant period of time in the early eighties when he was the biggest selling singer in the world.    Once again characterised by the emotional impact of the material, a necessary component in all Wetton's creativity, "Raised In Captivity" continues an unrivalled career which has brought inspiration to millions worldwide.

Of the new album and choice of producer, Wetton commented, "The decision to record in Los Angeles with Billy Sherwood was entirely mine. I wanted the chaotic urban inspiration, edge and energy to juxtapose the natural beauty that California provides.  I also knew that Billy Sherwood would provide the musical and technical ability to record quickly, with ultra high energy and superb production quality."  The material was written in a variety of ways, such as "Goodbye Elsinore" was written on the Denmark-Sweden sea ferry en route to a Vilde Frang concert and "The Devil and the Opera House" is co-written with King Crimson collaborator Richard Palmer-James. The album's finale is "Mighty Rivers", featuring the enigmatic Dutch soprano Anneke Van Giersbergen and the Seattle Symphony Orchestra.

John Wetton has been a member of several prominent British bands. After two albums with Family he joined King Crimson from 1972 to 1974, before working with Roxy Music and Uriah Heep. In 1977, with former Crimson band mate and drummer Bill Bruford, he co-founded U.K., which also featured guitarist Allan Holdsworth and keyboardist/violinist Eddie Jobson.  After U.K.'s demise, Wetton turned his attentions to a solo career.

In 1982, Wetton became part of the supergroup Asia, together with Steve Howe, Carl Palmer and Geoff Downes. This "fab four" of progressive pop would rule radio and record sales, with their debut album becoming the biggest selling album of the year and yielding the worldwide hit "Heat of the Moment."  Wetton remained prolific with more solo studio albums and several collaborative efforts over the years.

In 2002 at a John Wetton fan convention held in Allentown, PA, he started working with Geoff Downes again. This collaboration ultimately resulted a series of iCon studio and live albums and the in the highly-anticipated reunion of Asia's original lineup, bringing about two successful new studio albums: PHOENIX in 2008 and OMEGA in 2010.

Off the back of a Yes (And You and I) to Porcupine Tree (Way Out Of Here) life, I went on a search for new music this time last year.  I was bored senseless with all the "people with less imgaination than you bought this easy option" offers from a well known online shop, so tried myself a three steps away strategy.  That set me off on a new track that led to the Frost reports. Unspeakably brilliant! It ended here with you lot! I bought myself EIMA and wished I lived closer to the tour venues that were left, so jealous!  I grew up in Radio Caroline world, so for me anything I haven't heard before is interesting!  It's a hard world to find these days, but I am locked firmly back in! Desparation to delerium this year tho'...thanks for that!

I discovered Frost* through another fan club of the band Toehider (https://toehider.bandcamp.com/); a few "brohiders" (Toehider's "Frost*ies") were talking about Frost* and said that strangely enough, even though their music was really different, every Toehider fan seemed to enjoy Frost* very much.
I said I didn't know Frost* at all and that I would like to check them out to see if their hypothesis was right.
One of them sent me a youtube link to Dear Dead Days and I instantely fell in love :-) although my favourite is now Saline.

I had just discovered Big Big Train as a friend sent me a link to one of their songs on youtube. At the time, I had no idea modern prog existed. I knew artists like Steve Hackett were stil putting out albums, but I thought prog had pretty much died out in the eightys. I had no idea there were new and younger bands doing it and Big Big Train with their echos of Genesis and overall awsomeness won me over. Having got in to them, I then wondered if there were other bands doing prog, so I googled modern prog and Frost were one of the bands that came up. First track I heard was Hyperventilate which blue me away. Then I wickipedia'd them and saw Jem's connection with BBT. I was sold and bought all the albums right away. :)

Wow, I never filled this one in. Scrolling back to see if I did I saw all the Frost*ies of yore - Duey C, Mouse, Mr John, Catherine, E.S.!

Anyway, it was late 2006 and I was well into Porcupine Tree. Saw them live in Manchester, joined a forum about them and there was a link to the Silhobbit podcast with Steven Wilson's brother on it. Listened to that and there were some very intense jingles with loads of synths that sound like guitars. Asked around and they said it was Jem. Surfed a little, found the old blogspot site and forum and one lunchtime in early 2007 went into HMV in Oxford and bought Milliontown. Everything has been groovy ever since :)

I do like it when you get into a band early in the year though and they soundtrack the whole period, and you listen to them at work, and in the car, and you put them on the MP3 player for going on holiday and so on. Then you get all old and reminisce and marvel at concepts like "I didn't know about Frost* in 2006" etc.

Just had to go and dig out my old hard drive with all the old bits on, like "Here Is The News" - wow that's kool.

I had a look to see if I'd commented too & found me on page 1!  8)  Can't disagree with anything I said over 5 years ago.

Though I have a feeling that I've posted something like this before I couldn't find any comment by me on this topic, so apologies if I just missed it and am repeating myself.

I believe it was 2009 and my friend played 'Dear Dead Days' to me, I was instantly grabbed by it and off I went to find any Frost* CDs I could.
Luckily I managed to pick up the last copy of EIMA from an HMV in Edinburgh.
Then I listened to Milliontown and that cemented my love for the band.
Been an avid follower ever since.  :)

I love the fact that you have heard and like Toehider!! I used to chat with Mike on Twitter quite regularly a few years ago. "Whatever Makes You Feel Superior" is the song I put on when I need to feel uplifted.  8)

I gotta be honest, I think my Frost* story is pretty damn epic and totally worth a read.

In 2006 I was working at a record store in Fords, NJ called Vintage Vinyl.

We got a shipment of new CDs from Inside Out and among those was Milliontown. Before I had even heard a second of it, I was very intrigued by the album art, the font and the overall vibe it was going for. But I put it on the shelf without listening and forgot about it completely.

That same week my bandmate at the time showed me a pile of promo CDs he got from his friend at a local record label. Among those was Milliontown. He claimed it was this hot new Prog group. Now it was time for me to actually check this 'Frost' stuff out. On my first listen I was so blown away I actually didn't know what to think. There were elements I loved and then there were elements that I didn't know how I felt about. But something about the production was so impressive and the music was so out of this world that I couldn't stop playing it. As a keyboard player, Frost* completely shattered my musical world view. Within a month or so I was completely obsessed with the entire 6-track record. And within about a year it had easily become one of my favorite albums of all time.

When Experiments in Mass Appeal came out I thought I was going crazy. I was going through a tough breakup at the time and the lyrics on this album perfectly described how I felt. It was almost as if Jem and I were suddenly kindred spirits and he was able to perfectly articulate a bad breakup/divorce in such a way where it was like he was speaking directly to me. Frost's 2nd album saved my life at the time.

As if I didn't love enough Frost already, Jem announced that they plan on recording a live album and in Philadelphia no less. Being in New Jersey at the time, I couldn't believe this news as that is a mere 2 hour drive from where I lived. I was actually going to see my new favorite band live, and they were recording it for a live album! To this day they've only played 1 US gig and it just happened to be near where I live. And the fact that it was titled Philadelphia Experiment is all too weird, as I am a giant conspiracy theorist and have been a huge fan of the alleged 'incident' for so many years. The show ended up being 2 hours of pure awesomeness (what a surprise there) and being able to meet Jem and the band afterward was the event of a lifetime. Jem, if you remember I basically put a gun to your head and forced you have a beer with me. You were extremely tired and all they had was Corona, and you had to listen to me totally nerd out about the Falling Down solo. Sorry about that, man! But it meant the world to me. And also, if you listen closely during the break in Hyperventilate, you can actually hear me screaming my head off like a Viking going into battle. Damn, that was a great show.

10 years later with the release of Falling Satellites I can honestly say that their third record is their best one. The feeling I got from listening to such tracks as 'Towerblock', 'Heartstrings', and 'Raging Against' matched exactly if not topped the excitement I felt from hearing Milliontown. The entire record truly blows my mind, from a production standpoint and of course songwriting as well. I really think it contains all the best elements from Milliontown and Experiments, and of course throwing in tons of new colors as well. Jem, once again you and your boys truly nailed it. There is absolutely no doubt that I will listen to this album for many years to come. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart for FROST*!

Edit:
Forgot the coolest part of the story. Back in 2012 I was attending the NAMM convention, walking around the Roland room until I started to hear my favorite part of Black Light Machine in the corner of my ear. Confused and worried that I was going nuts again, I turned my head only to see Craig Blundell jamming out on a new electronic Roland kit. Got my camera out and snapped this video:

Of course Craig was extremely nice and was totally willing to have a nerdy conversation with me about Frost. He told me at the time that his favorite Frost track was the Dividing Line. I think Craig's got good taste in Frost. Ok, NOW I'm done.

And I remember meeting you at the after show! (or sometime...)  ;D

Milliontown is my #1 Desert Island album.  but what I hear from FS may give that a chase.

I think I knew of Frost* a good few years ago, but it's only been in the last year that I've really got into the music, starting (of course) with Milliontown. The closing instrumental section of the title track is one of the most extraordinary and thrilling passages of music I've ever heard. I bought the album last December, and I've grown to love the other songs on it too. Then I bought Experiments in Mass Appeal and Falling Satellites within 2 weeks of each other. I've probably listened to FS more, but both are incredible.

I'm a bit of a plane but or AVgeek, last year at RIAT (a huge air show in Glos)I was sat in front of Tony (think he's on here) and he told me about the band

In the autumn I subscribed to Spotify and it recommended Frost* to me, Hyperventilate in fact, from then on I've been hooked. About two days after first listening I saw that they were playing Dingwalls and I thought I'll have some of that! What a decision that was.

So that's how I found them, bit boring but I have Rony to thank!

RIAT killed my camera... it overheated writing B1 and B2 images to memory, on the apron....
Dingwalls was great!
