I've emailed the organisers, Jerry Ewing and anybody else even vaguely to do with it and not a solitary one has replied.

So...what else can I do? Maybe it's a political thing.

Mmmmmm, very strange. Unless Aaron Coplands lawyers have sensed a possible live outing of the track with no name!!!!!

Does this mean that were you asked, you would play then, Jem ???

(I sense some gentle cajoling from these here parts to the organisers) ;)

Just thought I'd pop in and say that if Frost* were to be added to the lineup, that would be more than enough to get me to drop a large chunk of my life savings and airline miles to fly to the UK for the experience. Seeing Dream Theater live again would be an added treat, though it wouldn't quite excite me the way Frost* does. That's a whole different realm of loin-stirring goodness.  ;)

I do not have words to express how incredibly awesome this would be. I'll be registering on their forum post-haste.

This was posted on the Spocks Beard website:
QuoteJanuary 28, 2011

Hi Everybody

As you probably know, Spock's Beard is scheduled to play the High Voltage Festival in London on July 24 as support for Jethro Tull. We are also working on a few more UK dates to go along with that to be played in the days after the High Voltage Festival.

The dilemma we are faced with is this: Nick may or may not be able to do these dates due to his commitment with Cirque du Soleil. He won't know for sure whether or not he'll be able to do this for some time, but we thought rather than wait we should disclose the fact now that we may need to have someone else front the band for these shows.

Normally in this situation we wouldn't even take a gig with this possibility hanging over it, but in this case we'd be absolute morons not to take this opportunity to present ourselves to lots of new prog fans that have never heard us before. This type of show is something that we've been striving towards literally for years and is a rare opportunity for us to increase our fan base.

While this may be a massive disappointment to some of you, the reality is that for the people who we really need to present ourselves to (the people who don't know much about us), and in fact the reason why we took this gig in the first place, we will be Spock's Beard and we will hopefully make a good enough impression on them that they will add themselves to the ranks of our beloved supporters.

(By the way, the promoters were informed of this possibility before we even accepted the gig and they are OK with it.)

Our goal is not to trick anyone or do anything underhanded, nor are we in any way considering a personnel change. We are simply trying to increase our fan base with this opportunity, and we sincerely hope that you understand.

Hope to see some of you there!

Oh, still be interesting to see who they get in....................................

Anyway, as several of you attended last year's festival I have a few questions regarding the logistics side - did people travel down and back the same day (assuming you only went on one day) or does anyone have any recommendations for accomodation (price being a BIG consideration) or did anyone find any organised coach travel to the event ???
I'm really hoping to go for the Sunday but don't fancy driving or the lottery of trying to make the last train back to the Midlands?? :?

Any info gratefully received :D  :D  :D

My friend drove us down from South Wales on the first day and he drove back home that night, I stayed for the 2nd day and got the train home on Monday as there are no late trains back to South Wales.

I stayed in the travelodge in Euston and the used a combination of buses and tube to travel between the hotel and Victoria Park

It would be great if Neal was willing to fill in, but on the flip side, does Cirque not have a back-up for its musicians? What if one falls ill before a performance? One would hope they'd be flexible with their scheduling, especially knowing the HVF date so far in advance.
Title: Re: high voltage

Maybe it's a "showing committment" thing? If NDV dodges Cirque in favour of Spock's they might take that as a signal?  :?
Title: Re: high voltage

Most employers have some way of accommodating requests for time off. I'd think Cirque would be no different. And I seriously doubt anyone would question Nick's commitment.

You're right. I wasn't suggesting that NDV's committment should be questioned by anyone. I was really thinking more about how NDV might feel about it himself - how important he thinks it is to *show* committment and not to say to Cirque; "actually I'd rather go do that". Don't we all factor-in how we think others might perceive the decisions we make...it's a human nature thing.
I too would hope that Cirque have an under-study concept in place for unexpected down-time. I figured that if NDV wasn't at all concerned about the Cirque thing being at risk, we would not have seen a question mark over him being at HV.
Anyway, it's all idol speculation on my part. :)
Title: Re: high voltage

Maybe it's more of a case that Cirque pays the bills and while I'm sure Nick loves playing in SB sometimes you have to go where the money is
Title: Re: high voltage
Post by: Mooncat on January 29, 2011, 08:11:32 PM
And to be fair, Cirque could argue both he and SB knew when he was contracted to work - it's Spocks that have booked the gig, it's not as if Cirque have extended their run.

Ultimately it's going to be gutting for Nick to have to miss a big gig for SB, but you can see why they still felt they had to take it - it could win them a legion of new fans for the next album/tour which in the long run will benefit all of them.
And if they do get Neal back as one of the 'friends' - what better way to have a 'reunion' gig without ousting Nick back behind the kit full time!
Title: Re: high voltage
Post by: gr8gonzo on January 30, 2011, 03:21:59 AM
To my knowledge, Cirque doesn't have any shows scheduled that far out. I'm sure if Cirque schedules a show on that date, Nick will, of course, fulfill his commitment to the show. All I was saying is that since no date is set at this point, Cirque could take that into account and arrange for HV to be an "off" day. Not in any way suggesting that Nick would try to get out of it to do an SB gig. Apologies if my comments came across that way.

Title: Re: high voltage
Post by: Mooncat on January 30, 2011, 09:31:24 AM
Yeah - wasn't meant to be criticism, after all Nick is part of the Frost* alumni. It's just part of the harsh reality of modern day musicians - as we know with current Frost* line up- everyone has several things taking up time (Jem has they 'day job' stuff, JM has his studio and playing with lots of other artists, Nath has Level42 and occasionally It Bites, and Craig has his Roland stuff, his own solo stuff, other bands and teaching)

So whatever happens with the SB lineup for this gig, I'm sure it's just a good oportunity for them and I'd hope that the long term sees them back functioning as normal.

Quite right. But even if it's not Frost*, here's hoping for something a little more "rail-worthy".
Last year's line-up contained much to make me want to get to the front and stay there (which I did for 80% of it).

I think we are still going, but it will probably be a much more relaxed experience this time.  :)

As I've posted this elsewhere, Neal joined Spock's on stage in '08 and played "The Light" with them. I'm not saying he'd do a whole set (and besides, the band have stated their focus is on the past few albums), but it's not outside the realm of possibility that he'd make an appearance with them.

We parted with £135 each for our 2 tickets last year so £100 is better. I'm quite keen to see some of these acts and having thoroughly enjoyed the last one from the rail of the Prog stage I'm looking forward to taking a step back, maybe sitting down and taking in a bit more of the event itself.

Looks like NDV definitely won't be with The Beard at HV: they've just announced (//http://www.spocksbeard.com) that Ted Leonard will be standing in. Mixed feelings about that - I'd prefer NDV, but I thought Ted was good the only time I've seen him. (With Enchant supporting Spock's Beard, of course  :). )

Also, it looks like SB might be playing a few more dates around that time. I went to see Steve Lukather at Manchester Academy last night, and they were advertising that SB would be playing there in July. (Of course I didn't write the date down, and I can't find any confirmation on the web this morning :(.)

How many frosties are going to High Voltage this year?

I'm really strapped for cash and would only be able to afford the one day (Definitely Sunday) so it'd be good to know who else is attending and how everyone's getting there.

Also, I've heard there's quite a problem with overlapping bands. If I don't get to see Dream Theater, Jethro Tull, Black County Communion and Spock's Beard, its not really worth it for me.
Title: Re: high voltage
Post by: Pedro on June 24, 2011, 06:48:32 PM
Mrs Pedro and I will be there for both days.
The problem of overlapping bands didn't bother me last year cos I pretty much stayed at the Prog rail all the time.
It will be impossible to see all of all bands (of course) and if you want to be anything like 'close' for main stage headliners you can forget seeing all of any Prog stage headliner's set.
We're going to be totally laid back this time around (prolly take chairs) with the possible exception of Neal's bit, it would cool to be front and centre for that. :)
