I'm quite a few listens in now ... the delivery boy was good to me. ;)
Pocket Sun and Toys have almost instantly found their way into my sub conscious (and my heart), with Saline and Dear Dead Days just behind, but the title track is immense.
You can accuse me of being sycophantic (I am), but I don't think there's a bad song on the album.
If I were to pick a favourite, at the moment it would be Experiments .. I love the Lord of Rock guitar solo (can't get the image of Jem and the circuit bent speaker out of my mind), and the finish to the song is just immense, maybe it's just my familiarity with EIMA though as I've had the gig CD since the London show in the summer.
Congratulations to Jem, JM, JJJ, Dec and Andy ... I rather like it, bloody marvelous stuff !
... despite the missing inside leg measurements from the booklet !
Now I just need to find some time to sit and watch the DVD disc.
Why am I torturing myself by even checking this forum today? *sigh*
For me, so far I think it's definately gotta be either DDD, or Falling Down
Quote from: "Philadelphia"Why am I torturing myself by even checking this forum today? *sigh*
Know exactly what you mean
I honestly can't decide. Falling Down, DDD, and Welcome to Nowhere I guess, because they're the newest ones for me. But I really do love 'em all.
It's a tough one, cause it works so well as an album, and hearing it in sequence has further highlighted the brilliance of tracks we already had (notably the title track, the production of which, on the tour cd, i found to be a bit harsh, so that when the rocky bits kicked in, and when listening to the outro, it hurt my head a bit... now it sounds sumptous!) Listening to 'Welcome to Nowhere' and 'Saline' a lot, because they're the least familiar; and they're both excellent. I'm amazed jem managed to keep them from us for so long. 'You/I's a little gem too, with a brilliant 'sod off' lyric. My favourites overall, though, are probably 'Falling Down' and 'Toys'...
Dear Dead Days and Falling Down which to me are two halves of a whole... rather like a jammie dodger. With no middle. Which would be a crap jammie dodger actually.
Welcome to Nowhere is probably my favourite, i'm suprised that i've not seen more people mentioned this as theirs on the forum?
I love the first verse melody and the pre-chorus melody, the chorus is also one of Jem's best in my opinion too, it's extremely uplifting and the syncopation in the bass movement is great (spot the music student :( ).

Yes I think that's right.... and rhyming it with 'Vile carbonator'? Which is just mental...
I wouldn't like to be whoever this song is about!
Toys, hands down. Closely followed by Dear Dead Days. Both brilliant songs. But the whole album is absolutely amazing. m/ 8-) 8-) 8-)
Got to be Saline for me.... lovely song... lovely feel to it....
Welcome to Nowhere, and Dear Dead Days by far. Wish the riff section in the middle of DDD was longer, you know, the one where Jem did it on synths then got the lads to play it, best riff ever :D
Almost forgot to mention. You / I has got to be the most amazing/most beautiful one minute song ever.
I LOVE Dear Dead Days, it is brilliant. The song structure is really well done, and the lyrics are powerful. My favorite track of the year no doubt.
I haven't even finished the album yet but Dear Dead FUCKING DAYS OHMYGOD
The mix, the dynamics the attention to detail in the vocals and instrumentation, every corner is filled in like...like... as if it were a pen drawing and it was coloured in to absolute perfection.
I'll report back after Toys though.
Hooray! Got in after a real crap day in the office to find my bag of Frost goodies patiently waiting for me. My good lady has immediately pinched the beanie hat but tonight I will be mostly sat in my new Frost T-shirt listening to the new album. Highly embaressing for my 12 year old son but it makes me happy. Favourite track still unknown but all previous recommendations noted. :)
What can I say?........
I keep hitting the replay button on 'Toys' ... pheeeeenominaaal - and I understand that Jem likes it as his most rounded and ''complete'' song.
As for other elements, I just cannot get over the powerful nature of 'Dear Dead Days' - I think I knew that same person as well! But I am fairly confident that I wouldn't have expressed the anxiety in the same way!!
I am overwhelmed by the power of each of the pieces - and this is what I often look for in a collective work (vis '90125'). It's like walking through an art gallery and thinking you have seen the best exhibit but seeing something rather special around the next corner, but only having to go back and check whether you were right or wrong!! Ad infinitum.
There is so much to take in that it will take a couple of weeks of 3-4 plays per day for it all to sink in. But I know when it will - once I can completely go through 2/3 tracks in my head when out with the furry creature (dog to everyone else), I've cracked it! - that's what happened with 'Milliontown' and I know it will be the same with EIMA.......
I do have one confession though - I've mucked about with the track order and have put EIMA at the end. It is so brilliant that I want to savour the moment of it's arrival. My version starts with 'Wonderland', then 'DDD' and 'FD'......
Jem - thanks. It's luvvvvverrrrlyyy!!
Dear Dead Days, Falling Down, and Wonderland. The others are good pop-rock songs though, just not proggy enough to be my favourites ;P
Just finished Toys. Blim-ey.
It would have to be DDD atm, but the entire album is just amazing
First listen to the opening tracks just blew me away. The high production values really add to the quality of the experience. Four down and five to go, so far all brilliant!
Still torn between DDD, Saline, Toys and Secret Song.
Secret Song doesn't come round as often which makes it a little more special. But that moment where everything fans out to Dec's "Deeeear Dead Daaaaaays" is bloody amazing and takes a fair bit of beating. Up there with Frankie's album version of 'Two Tribes' as a 'waaaaaaaaaaaaaaa' moment. (And the guitar change to staccato at the end of each line - beautifully done)
Really can't make up my mind. DDD, just.
Love the 'Davros effect' 'Welcome to the family' bit.
Saline, just beautiful. Falling Down rocks and Toys rocks with knobs on. The whole album is a holiday in Goosebumpville.
Well done Jem and the boys.
I love it all, but if i had to pick (at the moment at least, it seems to change every listen)
You/I
Its just sublime, its a great little thing, but the actual sound of the thing. Its so pretty. Am I right in thinking thats Jem singing? Tingly stuff :D
Tom
Pocket Sun used to be my favorite, along with Falling Down, but I over-listened them prior to the album's release so they were on the back-burner for a bit. Dear Dead Days was the instant favorite, but after more listening I started to like Welcome to Nowhere better. Right now they're pretty equal, along with Toys... and Falling Down is making a comeback and is in the lead right now. Wonderland and Secret Song are also amazing as well... EIMA pulling near the end (though it's still great) with Saline then You/I at the end (also great, but hey, rock comes first!)
I've made up my mind.
Secret song.
Though I've named it 'Fading into the Deep', possibly because I heard that lyric a lot over the report it was in, possibly because thats how I feel when I listen to the song, fading away, falling, especially with the ending chords.
Favourites already?
Dilemma, burned the album to a CD for the car, you've got 22 minutes spare.......what do you add to fill the space? You're allowed nominal space & no repeats

Toys has been getting a load of my attention but Dear Dead Days and Falling Down are neck and neck.
DDD: Dec's vox, those stunning arpeggios and the way that excellent guitar solo ends.
FD: This was the track with the "log of prog" wasn't it? Again the vox are great and there's so much anticipation in that guitar "chunk" sound at 2:48 (and the tambourine work) in the build up to that very excellent keyboard solo.

Sorry didn't mean to rub it in, it's just very easy to get the instrumental mp3's off the dvd
I'm about 12 plays in and though my initial analysis was not that great... i do have to say this...
Saline is lovely.... it really is...
You/I is really nice too....
I'm even liking Dear Dead Days now....
but Toys is really f*cking with me... there are so many hooks in the thing that it wont leave me alone now... its like Jem set it on me when i said I was dissapointed by the album and now it has me by the throat... call it off please.
Still dont like the drum machine in secret song but like secret song... still dont like the drum machine in welcome to nowhere but quite like welcome to nowhere...
So the only thing I really dont like is the awkward way that Dear dead Days flows into Falling down... but part of that may be due to me having a 'not quite gapless' mp3 player... Like the new start to Wonderland... for some reason it makes the 2 parts of it sit together nicer, which is bizarre. Still not a fan of the non instrumental bits on EIMA but at last i think i finally 'Get' Dec and the wonderful Job he actually does on this album in contrast to the other vocals... note contrast... not harmonies which I still dont like much. But I do like Jems vocals very much... and the others.
and I still dislike the sodding Drum machines!
It may not be what I'm used to but it is the very nature of Prog to change, to move, is it not... We progsters spend far too long standing still and licking the wounds caused by the modern generation of music.
apologies again.... now will you call off Toys please....
I'm really sorry for you guys who dont have your copies yet.... I hope its all sorted really soon...
No post,no album,no t-shirt...no happy,no shit.
Falling Down - best thing I've heard for years.
Rest of the album is simply class but FD is the one that gets my vote....today.
:P
Toys closely followed by Saline (especially the end bit) closely closely followed by Falling Down which is stupendously closely followed by the vocals with their beautiful harmony on Welcome to Nowhere at 3:55 which even closer than a close thing followed by itself...the song that is.
But this list will have changed by this time tomorrow.
Rx
P.S
drum machines are ace, as are drummers, as are lots of things that make bits of air move about at anyting from 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz
Dear Dead Days, and most certainly after that is Saline. When Saline hits the last chorus part it's simply amazing!
I can't choose right now, but I really really love the strings and vocal melody at the end of Saline. And so many other bits and bobs, been listening non-stop. :D
Yesterday, it was Dear Dead Days, but today it's Toys.
This is going to be difficult. Dammit, Jem!
My CD hasn't arrived yet (ordered via CRS, but like an idiot I didn't keep a note of the order reference, so I'm having faith that all will be well). But, gullible sucker that I am, I couldn't wait and so over the weekend downloaded EIMA from Play.com.
My favourite song is "Dear Dead Days", without doubt. I also really like "EIMA" and "Falling Down" a lot. But the whole album has a lot of great moments. I'm only on my fourth or fifth listen so far, so I'm obviously a lightweight. Not that my verdict matters much, but my overall view is that the production is better than "Milliontown" (which I loved, btw; I'm not saying that MT was badly produced). I especially like Jem's piano parts; really nicely recorded, and the actual notes being played are pretty good too - they often bring a dimension of subtlety and contrast to proceedings :-) Also, the sound of the drums is an improvement.
I like the album a lot, but I can see where some of those disappointed by it are coming from. I don't share that view, but I can understand it. For me, my only quibbles are that 'full-tilt' instrumental sections are often relentless / hyperactive (which is fine!), but I miss some of the lyrical / melodic soloing that was such a good feature of BLM and MT on the previous album. This isn't as much an issue of overall song-length as themes being given a little more breathing space to develop and flourish. Perhaps a little more balance between that and the condensed intensity might have been possible? Then again Jem obviously had an overall vision of what he wanted this album to say about Frost* now, so it's all cool...
I wonder about the running order: it seems to me that the closing moments of "Wonderland" end the album in such a way that it peeters out. That runs the risk of being anticlimactic, though I don't suppose there's any official rule that a modern prog album has to climax with a grandstand finale featuring soaring grandiose musical euphoria stimulating aural elation, whilst accompanied by a 90-piece orchestra and cathedral organ, with visual support from a procession of a thousand marching elephants, lasers and fireworks.
Just my (less than) tuppence worth...
Peace and love
David

If you go onto the CRS website, there should be details of your order in "My Account".
However, all that seems to be irrelevant, as the order number doesn't get passed onto TLD - send her a PM with your name and address, and she'll be able to confirm your order for you :D
Dear Dead Days... its the Black Light Machine of this album!! I would happily live on a desert island with these two tracks alone..
You might think that there's been an accident in the Scrabble factory if I use words like "Tintinabulation", "Juxtapose", "Susuration" and "Cathartic"
But that's how I feel about some of these tracks.
Some of us had commented (adversely) about the compressed sound of Milliontown
There's none of that here.
No sir.
I've used the single word "Monster" to describe EIMA advisedly. Like in a good horror film, this album growls and creeps up out of the darkness to rip your ears off before vanishing back into the shadows.
This makes the relative peace of "Saline" and "Secret Song" all the more poignant (sorry - there I go again  )
Tomorrow I may feel differently...
I know what a sussurus is, without even having to look it up! :D
Thanks to Terry Pratchett...

Who's ealer?
ealer is the person who will, hopefully, supply me with a new keyboard for christmas, so that I can type words like earlier. (;-)
This is getting sooooo difficult. Is there any way that all tracks can be played simultaineously and then let our little (or big - I have no issue with that) brains sort it out?
I keep going back to hit the repeat button on DDD but then I begin to miss WTN and then Saline crooks her little finger in a tantalising and beckoning way..... But I sooo miss Toys when I can't hear it!!
What the hell is going on?
Jem - you swine sir - this is excellent!! (with a capital 'F') Fortunately, I have a long journey tomorrow (there and back) so I should get another six to seven listens in by the time I get home.
I know it's the same guys, but is this really the sequel to 'Milliontown'? Both have qualities that are remote and, yet at the same time, linked. Is the introduction of Dec such a difference?
Answers on a postcards please......
Since the postman delivered EIMA yesterday I can confidentially say that I have mostly been listening to 'Falling Down' which is a just fabulous song. Great melody with a very strong hook. Driving arrangement with wonderful performances all round.
Course that could all change tomorrow but for now thats my nomination for the best track on the album.
At the moment Welcome to Nowhere is the one stuck in my head
they are all just lovely. I wasnt keen on DDD at first but it has seeped into my head.
Secret song is mine and will always be mine so i wont hear a word said against it !
Saline gets better the more you hear it.
album of the year, and possibly next year for me. I cant wait to hear the boys rock some of this stuff out live.
x
I'm just waking up to all this... and I'm going to enjoy a sort of lie-in and ease myself in bit by bit in a very lazy sort of way.
First up tho, I particularly likethe way the acoustic guitars are recorded a minute or so into EIMA, the percussive xxxxx* of the plectrum is wonderful and the way they stand out in the mix - Nice!
*Invent and insert a suitable word to describe the noise a plectrum makes as it's strummed down a set of taught metallic strings.
Have not looked forward to the drive into work so much for a long time!! :)

I think the word you are looking for is "scrape" :D (although I know that is usually used for along the length of the string, I think it still works :) )
I'm switching to Toys! It had me grinning like an idiot on my walk just now, I hope no one saw me.

reason being is it reminds me a bit of skunk anansie's early work that i really liked. powerful vocal and good melody. thank you jem and the guys.
love saline too
and the secret track is cool, a bit over eq'd for my liking but cool none the less

Today I 'ave mostly been enjoying Welcome to Nowhere !

I'm glad you said that.
When I first heard it (on the tour CD, in the car just as I was pulling out of the car park in Leeds after the Rios gig) I said to GigBuddy Chris "It's a bit Skunk Anansie, isn't it?", and he gave me what can only be described as A Look.
I am vindicated!

must be right then eh!! crackalackin
I would say the best song on the album is definitely Falling Down. It speaks to me. The lyrics strongly remind me of a point in my life that isn't too far behind me. Amazingly well done. EIMA has taken up my choice for album of the year, and I didn't expect that. Silly me :P
I mean don't grab your torches and pitchforks, I knew this album was gonna be great, but there's already been so much good music this year, to have something come out this late and just blow everything away came as quite a shock.
And today, it's Wonderland.

Gosh the entire album is so juicy. Dear Dead Days is mint. Toys is fun. But for right now Saline's melodies are haunting me in a good way, if that makes sense.
Im now tucking into the instrumentals .. Fabulous to here all the various instrumental parts without the vox to distact your ears ... And Jems interventions are very unexpected and typically Jem, hilarious .... Fans of the view from the cube will be delighted !
Hi there ! my 1st post.
just downloaded the album from itunes (can't wait for hardcopy now)
after a few listens now I have to say, WELCOME TO NOWHERE, defenatly.
just as the 'numb masturbator' (LOL) said , i find the chorus one of the best i've ever heard, its Kickass, it's dark, its exciting, longing for MORE.MORE MORE. wow Jem , I can see you kicking around the Cube when you created this one !

It has thus far been known as "Secret Song" - in one Frost* Report, Dec was holding up the lyric sheets and one of the titles he read of the sheets was "Secret Song". Ok, that may have only been a working title but it's all I know of. :)
Secret song ? I wanna hear it .its not in my itunes purchase. Please make it available for me. Argh ! Torture ! :)

Didn't Jem say he changed the order of the songs at the last minute, so last minute that they couldn't change it on the actual CD's, maybe THAT is that change.
I expect it's already been said hear, but I don't know it hasn't arrived yet (//http://planetsmilies.net/sad-smiley-384.gif) (//http://planetsmilies.net)
I'm back to Saline again...
today it's 'falling down' for me. i love the dark athmosphere in it. All kinds of musical associations come to me. this track has it all !
the whole album is getting to me after several listenings
It's Saline today.
favorite track would be Dear Dead Days
Though it alternates by the day as well, so technically speaking it's Falling Down at the moment
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear!! It's so difficult, but as I have given a clue...it's....
Dear Dead Days
followed swiftly by
Toys and Welcome To Nowhere (Dec's vocals are some of the most cutting I have heard in years)
But I think that Saline will be my saviour tomorrow to prevent me from developing an early hearing disorder due to constant headphone wearing. Gawd, that is an infectious song!!
Secret Song. It's Secret Song today.
Right now, gotta go w/"Dead Dead Days." The bridge riff (featured on one of the Frost Reports) is so damn catchy...just wish it went on longer.
Now Look 'ere!
EIMA, as in yon titular track, does suddenly run into 'WTN' as if the track has jumped don't it!
I have the Tour CD which has EIMA on it and it does end more traditionally on that.
Prob'ly ol' Jemasus 'aving a larf but 3 min 19 secs is quite a weird timing for the eponymous entry!
If anyone can comment, I will be pleased to hear your view.

One track that I simply can't get enough of the last few days is Welcome To Nowhere. I get a huge kick out of that wall of guitars that is sliding in just before the chorus pops up and love the interesting drum part TBE has put under this song.
It changes from time to time... I'd say Welcome To Nowhere for today :)
The album is amazing, every little detail gets your attention and you lose it because then it comes the next little detail and so on.
At the moment, Toys gets repeated a lot in my player, and DDD and Welcome To Nowhere too.
And the instrumental versions are surprising!
Maybe there should be a topic for each song, they all deserve it. And there are many things to be asked and commented about them all.
Jem, you did it again. Milliontown was my album of 2006 and this will be my 2008 top. :)
When I eventually the CD gets delivered, I'll let you know
Hell yeah!
Today my special edition of EIMA arrived, together with Milliontown. Heard most of it already, but what a treat. Two amazing records.
My two Frost*-shirts from the official shop arrived yesterday aswell, so here I am with my frost* tee and EIMA blazin on 10.
Thanks Jem and the boys. Love it!
It's not that easy...
Wonderland and DDD (at the moment ;) )
I like Toys quite a bit even though its not the sort of tune i would call prog - i like the uptempo feel of it.
After that i would say Falling Down.

I have never quite understood the whole " this is prog enough, that is not" mindset. Frankly, a lot of what is classified as "prog" these days is just formula retread, predictable, and almost prog parody.
To me, good music is good music....which is 80% song, and 20% execution. As far as I am concerned, anything Jem writes in "this genre" will always have a proggy backdrop due to the elements and the mindset. My idea of great prog has nothing to do with song length, odd time signatures, mellotrons, or 3 minute wankfests. I consider prog to be rooted in a vibe, melody, and attitude.
As for which song is my favorite......I am still waiting for my copy.....
Blimey 112 posts on that thread, so in a 113 is my tuppence...
Initially I thought as a whole it seemed samey but after listening to the instrumentals and going back to it, I could hear that it really wasn't and was fantastic. I have never really got instrumentals before, could never see the point but I almost prefer them to the album. Saline is particularly beautiful.
So favourite tracks
1. Saline (instrumental)
2. Welcome to Nowhere - absolutely perfect love it
3. Secret song - hope WW doesn't mind but it makes me think of what it must be like to have lost someone. I will have Secret Song at my funeral.
4. Saline
All the rest, except Dear Dead Days. I had that keyboard mentalness as my ring tone for ages and it really freaks me out when it starts!

funny you should say that. i totally agree.
I was planning a vid for toys with my ex, who is good at all things filmy but i couldnt get the video for secret song out of my head.
at the beginning its a heartbeat on a hospital monitor and a man lying in bed. staff rushing round him speeded up / in stop motion but he's singing in normal time. then you see water lapping around the bed and he sinks down into the water.
i'll be fine dont worry, he opens his eyes under the water. they are very blue.
then viewed from high up you see him on his back in his hospital gown floating in teh sea with life belts floating all around him
i'll be fine
instrumental you get closer and closer until you are close on his face, he closes his eyes. when he opens them again you zoom out and he is arguing with his wife on a clifftop. zoom into her brown eyes then she closes them. whe she opens them come out and she is stood on the cliff crying, arms wrapped around herself and wind blowing.
remember me
you see her from th epoint of view of under the water and then up and out as she steps off the cliff.
view from teh side, she closes her eyes ad steps forward and he in his hospital gown is in front of her holding her back. he melts ito her and you close up on her face when she opens her eyes she has one blue eye and one brown eye.
silly perhaps but i see that every time i hear the song.
Not silly at all. That would be extremely effective if you ask me. :)
ww: I think that would be a very good and appropriate video for that song. I love it.
WW - I always suspected it, but that proves it: you're beautiful on the inside, too.
Wow. That will be in my head next time I listen to it.
Well, I would say DDD & Falling Down, however, I'm the kind of listener who doesn't concentrate on lyrics too much (tsk), preferring the music to 'move' me (and it all does). But
Quote've made up my mind.
Secret song.
Though I've named it 'Fading into the Deep', possibly because I heard that lyric a lot over the report it was in, possibly because thats how I feel when I listen to the song, fading away, falling, especially with the ending chords.
and the above posts - once I concentrated on the lyrics I came to exactly the same conclusion. Beautiful.
Mine has to be saline and DDD, songs of perfection.
