Title: UK Reunion Tour
Post by: Nev on December 11, 2011, 12:33:08 AM
Eddie Jobson has anounced the first date of the UK reunion tour featuring Eddie along with John Wetton and Terry Bozzio, playing together for the first time in 33 years.  There are expected to be more dates announced but currently this is the only one confirmed and is in Montreal on the 11th May 2012.

//http://www.progmontreal.com/eng/maineng.html

I'll post additional dates as they are announced.

I hope they play somewhere near me.  It would be great to see this line-up as I only got the chance to see the original line-up (with Alan Holdsworth and Bill Bruford) the first time round.

Another date has now been announced:

May 18 - The Regency Theater, San Francisco, USA [tickets on-sale Jan. 15]

There is a new web-page (//http://www.ukreunion.com) which lists the dates as they are confirmed.

If you want a reminder of this trio, or don't know who they are   this is a clip from The Old Grey Whistle Test:

In the Zealots Lounge (Eddie's subscription only web-site) he talks about a total of around 30 concerts worldwide as part of this tour.  While I guess there will be quite a few in the US and Japan, I hope that there will be a few around Europe, both North and South ;)

I wonder who is doing the Holdsworth parts?
Title: Re: UK Reunion Tour

Quote from: "mattstevens"I wonder who is doing the Holdsworth parts?

As this is a reincarnation of the second UK line-up, I'm guessing that Eddie will be taking on all the solo parts.

In the last few years Eddie has played concerts with Alex Machechek, Greg Howe and Marc Bonilla.  Personally, I think it would be great if Alex Machechek was going to tour with them as he is the closest to bringing the feel of Allan Holdsworth to the group and so getting close to the best of both groups (although Bruford had a sound and style all his own).  However the announcement limits itself to the trio, so I suppose that will be the final line-up.

I just wrote that last bit and then had another look on the Zealots site:

"Also, I must announce with regret that Terry Bozzio will not be joining us in Europe or possible South America.  Any "UK" dates on those continents will be performed as a quartet with Alex Machacek and a drummer as yet to be announced.  Terry will be playing all U.S., Canadian, and Japanese dates."

So now the question will be which drummer.  Again, Eddies usual turn-to drummer recently has been Marco Minneman so let's see what transpires.

Ahh  Alex Machechek is the UKZ guy - hes really good. MM i saw with Belew and he is stunning.

Someone say Allan Holdsworth?
Allan Holdsworth tour dates
Just in case you missed this – Allan Holdsworth will be touring venues across the States, January through April before moving  to Europe for the "first chapter" dates in May. European gigs announced so far include Germany, The Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland.

Joining Allan will be Jimmy Haslip (bass) and Virgil Donati (drums) and Dennis Hamm (keyboards).

That's a shame - it would make a great evening.

Another date has been added on the Zealots Lounge (//http://www.zealotslounge.com)

QuoteThe Highline Ballroom in New York City has been added to the 'UK' trio tour.  The date is Friday, May 4, 2012.

Still no indication of Europe & RoW dates.  I'll keep checking for any further news.

I was fortunate to see that line-up at Newcastle City Hall. According to this (//http://calyx.perso.neuf.fr/bands/chrono/bruford3.html) site, that was 04 May 1978.

I briefly met Bill Bruford back-stage afterwards and he was really nice, especially considering I was a 13 year old brat.
My memory (such as it is) was that it was an incredible concert.  I just wish I had been older so that I could have appreciated it even better.

I hope I get the chance to see one of the European gigs, which is why I am closely monitoring the announcements of confirmed dates.

That's great. It was a great time for 'jazz-rock'. Bill is a great guy. I booked him for a drum clinic in 2006 and was just great to work with.

I work with Tony Wright who played sax for IQ and Big Big Train, among others. And he played with Holdsworth in the mid to late seventies in Southampton with a great guitarist who died called Guy Swinstead. This was before Holdsworth emigrated to the US.

Nice one  :)

It now looks as though I won't get to any, either because of lack of work (and no money) or possibly too much work and tight deadlines.  It's either feast or famine, usually the latter  :?

Oh, missed this before. Am I supposed to go to my local, De Boerderij, tomorrow night and see them?

Not an entirely rhetorical question: there's a big UK-sized lacuna in my musical knowledge, so I'm not really sure I'd know what to expect / whether I'd like what I'd hear.

Wetton I only really know through Asia (yes, sorry), although I'm aware of his other connections.

Jobson I know of too, even to the extent of his infamous momentary joining of Yes and appearance in the OOALH video. I know he's primarily a keyboard player, but really am not a fan of his other instrument, the violin, in rock / prog settings (not much of a fan of it when played solo in classical settings either).

And Bozzio I only know by name and his employment of a jolly large number of drums.

So, fellow Frost*ies: to go, or not to go? Despite what I've said above, I'm completely neutral: convince me  8-)

Edit: seems like I shouldn't need any convincing, if only because no-one else seems to need it: De Boerderij is sold out tomorrow ...  :(

Edit 2: Sorry, making a bit of a hash of this: I see that the Boerderij line-up is Wetton, Jobson, Machachek, and Husband, so my comments about Bozzio are irrelevant.

Go, GO, GO!!!!!!

Although you may not be a fan of the violin, the way Eddie plays and it and mangles the sound, it is an entirely unique experience.

Quotehis infamous momentary joining of Yes and appearance in the OOALH video

There are not that many people (I guess) that are aware of his appearances in the video.  they are very brief and the one the top of the building is with his back to the camera.

I'm kicking myself for not being able to go last night, but the combination of funds (or lack of) and distance made it unfeasible.

If nothing else it will probably be the last time to see this.  Although some of the last UK songs pointed in the direction of Asia (yes, 'Nothing to Lose', I'm looking at you).  They hold up brilliantly after 30 years (I play both of the studio albums often and they still sound great).  I know I am a bit biased, but all reports have been glowing.  It's a chance you can't miss... so....

Go, GO, GO!!!!!!

To be fair to Asia, I did quite like the first album at the time (same goes for GTR, long since forgotten), although it hasn't worn well, IMHO, and I don't think I bought anything else by them. I'm not sure they really count in the pantheon of prog, do they? And just because a band call themself a supergroup, it doesn't necessarily make them one.

As for Mr Downes himself, I still remember the visceral shock of hearing that Anderson and Wakeman were being replaced by the Buggles (making the new band the Buggers, according to a friend of mine at the time), but I soon calmed down (life's too short) and was pleasantly surprised by Drama the album, and it's still a favourite today. Even if Mr Horn couldn't deliver on stage, the vox were fine on the LP. I mean, if you've ever heard the infamous Paris sessions and the completely drippy direction that Anderson was trying to take Yes at the time, then Horn and Downes deserve great credit for keeping the band heavier.

OK, Anderson being drippy on his own can be fine in my book; I like Song of Seven still, for example. But not Yes: they need more oomph.

From the Nearfest web-site (//http://www.nearfest.com/news.asp#86)
QuoteUK TO HEADLINE SOLD-OUT NEARFEST APOCALYPSE
Tuesday, May 29, 2012

We are delighted to announce that the legendary progressive rock supergroup UK will be joining the NEARfest Apocalypse lineup as the Sunday night festival headliner with a four-piece lineup. By some streak of amazing fortune, the members of UK had simultaneous availability in their busy schedules, and were able to assume the mantle of festival headliner with less than a month to spare before the event.

Revolving around two iconic musicians, keyboardist/violinist Eddie Jobson and bassist/vocalist John Wetton, UK was the last of the 1970s progressive rock supergroups. UK seamlessly melded dazzling instrumental virtuosity, incredible compositional prowess, classical and jazz influences, and memorable song-craft into two classic studio albums that have endured the test of time and earned the band legions of fans. In the second decade of the new millennium these two luminaries have once again joined forces to bring UK's timeless music back to the stage, thrilling audiences around the world at sold-out concerts. With an expanded four-piece lineup including celebrated rock/fusion drummer Gary Husband and noted fusion guitarist Alex Machacek, UK will feature music from both of its albums and classic-era King Crimson songs not able to be performed with the 3-piece lineup that recently toured the USA.

NEARfest Apocalypse will occur June 22-24, 2012 at Zoellner Arts Center, Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA. Co-headlining with UK are Van der Graaf Generator (Friday night June 22) and Renaissance (Saturday night June 23). Although the festival has been sold out for some time, UK fans seeking to attend may look for second-hand tickets at the NEARfest website discussion forum Ticket Board (//http://www.nearfest.com/forum/index.php) or Progressive Ears. (//http://www.progressiveears.com/)

This follows on from Eloy having to pull out due to medical issues with guitarist/singer Frank Bornemann after he was knocked off his bicycle.  Let's hope that Frank has a speedy and complete recovery.

A terrible misfortune for Eloy, but the end result is some good fortune for UK.  Good luck.   :D
