Title: A rather fab and very unique competition - please read
Post by: Blunders73 on June 17, 2010, 03:10:03 PM
In conjunction with Frost*, Pimpco and the blessing of the wonderful lads at Mapex we are giving you an opportunity to design the finish of Craig Blundell's Mapex Orion kit for the forthcoming Frost* Gigs in December and all 2011 dates. The only criteria is that the colours are blue and white, the Frost* and Mapex logos are optional. The winner will meet the band at the o2 Islington academy on the 3rd of December and be Craig's tech for the evening. He or She will have their name "designed by" on the bass drum. The kit will be used for all the future Frost* tours.

What we need is a high res image of the drum surface either in PDF or JPG format, and Pimpco will create a wrap for the kit. The closing date is the 9th July 2010, send in your designs to sales@pimpco.co.uk

So what are you waiting for? Send in those high quality designs and create the kit that you always wanted to see onstage with Frost*.....

So we are talking just the kick-drum face, right?
Title: Re: A rather fab and very unique competition - please read
Post by: Blunders73 on June 17, 2010, 05:37:24 PM
Please do...Not the kick face, the shells of the drums....

It's taken me a while to make this happen so a HUGE thank you to Mapex for letting Pimpco pimp the drums. It proves that Mapex are just the best and their fwd thinking is incredible. The guys at pimpco are brilliant, it's the brainchild of al Murray (comedian and great drummer) and chris newell, amazing drum visionary, please send in your designs as cool as possible and I look forward to seeing them and can't wait to see what this kit is gonna look like

Thanks Mr. B. It was the "high res image of the drum surface" and "Pimpco will create a wrap" bits that puzzled me.
Is there an example of the kind of shape the expected image would be?
Are we talking something like the strip of paper wrapped around a cake?

Mmmm....cake....

Yup.

Entrants could feasibly come up with a generic design that could be mucked about with by pimpco's designers, but it'd be nicer to know the composition and dimensions of yer kit, Mr Blunders

Top idea.
According to Craig's welcome thread the kit is likely to be made up as follows :
22x22 Kick
8x7 10x8 12x8 racks
14x13 floor
16x15 floor
18x16 floor
BP snares
18" gong

Very cool

so before this all came about we were thinking of incorporating different colour hardware ie the top hoops coated in White bottom in blue or vice versa, I like the idea of a fade of some sort but something a bit "out there" that's not been done before

those sizes are what I'll be using

If there are any photoshop wizards out there, then I think this //http://graphicriver.net/item/seamless-snowflakes-texture/68160 would look rather fine.  Possibly with a graded tint over the top.
It's a seamless pattern, so simply stretching the pattern size slightly should allow the repeat to fit any circumerence perfectly.
I'd have a go, but I don't have photoshop... :(

I'm too geographically challenged to participate, but had an idea I would have submitted - something resembling white hot circuitry, sort of a cross of Tron and Def Leppard's Hysteria cover, utilising the EIMA cover microphone Frosterisk throughout. Feel free to steal that. Or not.  :D

Damn I was gonna say that Frosterisk Microphone mesh as well. Its in teh toys section I believe? One of the wallpapers. I realise I wouldn't win with that contribution but ho hum.

Just a quickie q, Mr blunders but what are the cymbals that'll be in use?

And not meaning to steal the thunder of the competition but is the gig section going to be updated soon?

Holy helicopters and juice, what a fantastic idea, Blunders! I might have to have a crack at this later, I'm already starting to get some ideas through the void...

Oh, by the way, does anyone have any recommendations as to what dimensions would be good for a high quality JPEG? And when would any/all ideas have to be sent in by? And can we submit multiple designs? And is Kia-Ora really too orangey for crows...?

I wondered whether there was any scope for different designs too.
Both Neil Peart and Nicko McBrain have had custom kits where each drum had different graphics, albeit all based on one 'background'

Hi all, I've just spoken to pimpco, yes you can design the individual drums if you like but keep it with a running theme, we really want to create something very special that's never been done before which looks amazing

V. Nice.
But, just to remind folks, we are talking about design(s) that will be printed onto wraps that will go around the outside of each drum. Not a circular design for the kick drum face.

Yes I need to rethink that one!  I think that I don't like this now.  The lions remind me of our crap football team and the blue is far too Chelsea.  A sausage remake at some point today.

Morning all.

Thank you so far for submitting your ideas, we are getting some amazing ones. The general "cold" "Frost" theme is looking stunning, with white hardware it would look amazing, please keep them coming and as striking and "out there" as possible, we want to create the best kit there is.....

This is SO much fun !!

OK, here's something else (I'm pretty much limited to Paint, Picasa and Photobucket, none of which i'm very good with anyway, so I'm fully expecting much more impressive results from others!  :P  )

I wanted to somehow have a design in 7/8, this was the best concept I could come up with!

The Chicken is a work in progress. I'm a bit crap with photo editing - maybe I should ask Evs lol

Lego is on TwitPic I think. Courtesy of my son, who got so carried away with TPE he felt compelled to construct a Lego Frost*.

He has form for this type of thing - he did a lovely painting of Tinyfish* singing One Night on Fire.

He's growing up with all his cultural references provided by Prog bands... and Scooby Doo  :)

Of course, he now thinks Jem is the funniest man on the planet. Apart from his "Uncle" Carl.

Sabian also do the slightly amusingly named 'Chopper', which has more Frost*erisk about it.
Just don't blame me if the image results you get when you google 12" chopper are not of cymbals!!!!!!!

(Also Blunders is a Meinl endorsee so they probably wouldn't be too happy with him using them (and he has a similar stack cymbal thing that makes much the same noise)

Closing date is July 9th, which I think means that you have until the end of tomorrow to get your entries in.

I had some (mad) ideas but just no time to try to get them to work.

One was a variation on the willow pattern with (probably rather obvious) adaptations :-

...another was to make each drum look like a biscuit tin (which would have been a bit daft) :-

...another was based on the Queen's "The Miracle" (with the connected faces) which looked downright scary (and suffered from a lack of suitably aligned good quality pictures) :-

...and the last was in recognition of the fact that there are 8 drums and (so far) 8 gigging members of Frost* (Jem, JM, JJ, TBE, DB, NK, NDV, & CB) so I thought each drum could be dedicated to a different band member.
So there'd be a background pattern (prolly based on the "Frost*" waveform and/or Frost*erisks), that band members face, a stylised representation of their main instrument (e.g. drumsticks, bass guitar strings, etc.) and their name plus, possibly their signature. Potential to look really good or really naff, dependent on imlementation....and that's where the wheels came off. Me and Photoshop are on civil terms but we don't really converse. I tried but all efforts came to nothing really. Doing all 8 would take forever....and for that reason....I'm out.

So, fingers crossed for the eventual winner whoever it is and thanks to Craig and Mapex for getting this in place.

Hey, that's a good idea, Pedro!  So is that 3 floor toms, 3 rack toms, one kick and one snare? For some reason I thought he had two snares...

Here is the first draft of my WIP:

From an earlier post :-

22x22 Kick
8x7 10x8 12x8 racks
14x13 floor
16x15 floor
18x16 floor
BP snares

So you might be right with the mutiple snares.... :?  Ah well, it matters little now.   :D

Interesting idea you have there, but remember the blue/white requirement.  :)

I am keeping that in mind, but I didn't realize it was a requirement  :?

Do you know what all they can paint as far as hardware goes? That would be cool if every surface on the drumkit that is normally a metal chrome finish was white/blue.

Quote from: "In the first post, Craig"The only criteria is that the colours are blue and white
I'd hate a good idea to miss on a technicality!  ;)

Craig has said that the rims will be white, I guess the lugs, etc. could be too?

Have a look at //http://www.pimpco.co.uk/ if you haven't already.

So, do you guys think it will be over at the end of this week?  Still trying to find time to work on this thing.

As was suggested to me by Roger, mooncat and Pedro, I've just submitted my own design. I just hope it's not too late, but to be honest this is just an added bonus if I can participate since I wasn't even aware of it in the first place.  ;)

If you haven't seen it yet, look it up in this thread (//http://www.frost-music.co.uk/frosties/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1983).

Cheers!

As the band are very busy rehearsing today, Craig has asked me to post this message.

"Hi all, sorry for the delay things are so manic. I'd just like to thank you all for your entries to the comp, there were so many. I decided to go with the DVD theme for the kit as it was just so hard to pick one, thank you vit p. So, what I've decided to do is take all your entries and put them all on a snare drum and run a comp next year for it, so you all get on it, I hope that's ok!!"

I've had a sneaky peek and it looks stunning. :D

I had been ignoring this thread as I wanted to see what the drums looked like tonight.  I was most disappointed that my daughters potato prints hadn't won!

I thought they were fab and did wonder who did them as it really did look like a VitP thing.  So not surprised that they were!
