Gigs / Re: Frost*Bites 16th December 2012

Although I didn't mingle with the Frosties I had a great time last night. I just haven't gotten to know you all properly here. I was a bit worried by the long queue when I got there at 7, but got in in time.

I thought the sound was pretty good, with a few issues with the mix. Not too loud, although I found my ears were ringing on the way home. Maybe I should have brought my earplugs. I noticed they were being sold on the merch stall.

Frost* were excellent. This is my first time seeing either band, but I had some idea of what to expect from the various videos I've seen. I always like to see a band enjoying themselves.

I remember It Bites from their early days and knew a fair few of the songs. I think John does a pretty good job of emulating the original vocals. He and Nathan worked hard, but everyone was on top form.

I also wondered about the mics used on the bass cab. Looked odd.

Oh, and sorry to miss meeting Matt Stevens again. I thought he would probably be there.

I'm a sucker for anything with a cello on it. Hackett's guitar is very harp-like. It's a lovely little song, but I'll need to check out some more. I'm more interested in Hackett's new reworkings of Genesis songs, but not heard it yet.

I finally managed to see Matt play live in Hitchin on Saturday after following him for years. We've conversed on-line, but never met before. He was playing a support slot for The Magick Brothers (Daevid Allen of Gong). And he was bloody good despite some technical issues. I had a long chat with Matt and Kev (his driver, roadie, producer and Fierce & The Dead bandmate). Great guys. There's a chance they will be back with the full band!

Wasn't so sure about Daevid Allen. Nice enough music (and poetry), but I don't know his stuff and it didn't grab me. There were lots of older Gong fans there although not a huge crowd overall.

Got! Got! Got!

Just had a first listen and it's a glorious sound. I was drawn to BBT after hearing them on Dividing Line shows and being reminded of early Genesis, but then they have that brass band thing going on too. Wonderful stuff.

A bit late to the party, but I just bought my ticket. Looking forward to it. The Scala is pretty convenient for me as I can easily get a train to Kings Cross.

See you all there. Is there some sort of uniform that Frosties wear to identify themselves?

Frost* / Re: Kid's taste in music

I try to nudge my kids in the right musical direction. My daughter (14) like Lady Gaga, McFly and Ed Sheeran, but gets to hear some of my favourites too. She knew Wish You Were Here when Ed sang it. She also got into the wonderful Chameleon Circuit, but then she loves Doctor Who. Her friends seem to be into stuff like One Direction and JLS :( Son (10) likes a bit of rock, e.g. AC/DC, Red Hot Chillies etc.

I'm happy for my kids to discover their own music via radio and friends, but I can still make them aware that other music exists.

I love a bit of Crimson, but have not seen them live. I think the nearest you could get now is the combined Belew+Levin tour that toured the States last year.I'm hoping they will do it this side of the pond some time. I don't think there's much chance of Mr Fripp joining them.

I need to get a few more of their albums, but I really like Discipline and Thrak.

Okay, you pushed me into joining. I found Frost* a while back via some of The Dividing Line podcasts. They seemed to have a joy in their music that is missing from a lot of prog. I got into prog via Genesis' Nursery Cryme many years ago and later Pink Floyd. These days I've been listening to lots of Porcupine Tree along with all sorts of other music. I see Matt Stevens is on here. I've been following his progress for a while.

I dabble in a bit of music making, but nothing too exciting. I've been playing guitar for decades, but never really taken it anywhere. I've been making a few experiments with recording that you can find at http://soundcloud.com/steevc. Much of this has been inspired by the Six String Bliss podcast and forum. I've made a lot of friends there and we produce some collaborative albums.

I was very sorry not to get to the recent Frost* gig as I was too late in trying to get tickets. I'm hoping that the new album will lead to a proper tour. I follow Jem's blog and will be keeping an eye out for news.

Anyway, I'm here now and enjoy a good chat about music and stuff.
