Title: Pre-gig Meetup in Derby!
Post by: LivingForever on December 05, 2010, 08:18:17 PM
Hi All,

I can't see that anybody's organised anything else yet, so I'm taking it upon myself to round up the Frost*ie herd which might otherwise spend the afternoon wandering aimlessly around Derby in their 'Keep Calm and Mellotron' T-shirts...

Since the name came up in earlier discussion, and it made me laugh, and it's within walking distance of the uni - I'm going to suggest we all meet up at:

http://www.jontyfarmerpub.co.uk/ (http://www.jontyfarmerpub.co.uk/)

The Jonty Farmer
Kedleston Road
Derby
DE22 1FT

Looks like one of those pub/restaurant things which may not be as atmospheric (i.e. grimy) as somewhere like the good old Fighting Cocks in Kingston, but it'll probably serve pretty well for those that want some food with or before their beer. And it's probably got plenty of tables free, especially on a Monday afternoon.

Now - I don't actually know what time the gig doors are. The only thing I've seen so far is from our trusty Uni of Derby mole, drscab, who said she THOUGHT doors were at 7.

I am well aware that people (and by "people" I mean "I") like to queue up stupidly early so as to be able to look up Jem's nose while he plays, or to examine JM's crotch from the front row (not me this time), so I am going to imagine that people (and by "people", I mean "Pedro") will start leaving for the freezing cold queue at around 6.

I therefore propose that people start turning up to the pub any time from 4 onwards, so as to give us plenty of time for maximum nerdy prog talk. And then people can come and go as they like and head off whenever they want. (as long as it's not before me.)

So, I suppose what I'm trying to say in a VERY VERY longwinded way is:

Meetup. Jonty Farmer. 4pm till late. Bring biscuits.

Oh, and if anybody else is staying at the Derby Travelodge and would like to share a cab to the aforementioned public house, send me a PM and we'll arrange to meet up!

Doors opening at 7pm comes from the Frost Store, which is as close to Gospel as we get.

Not sure I'll be up at the Travelodge for 4pm - but the Jonty it is

Doors time I was going off the first post in the DVD thread by Jem ;)

I'm afraid I'll be busy working at the meeting time, but you'll see me buzzing around the venue later on!

Of course it goes without saying that even if you can't make it at 4, come along anyway!

I may not even be there until 4.30 or 5, but it was just an idea.

I may not be able to get to the pub in time before doors open, but I'll give it my best shot.
On another but related note - I haven't had my ticket through the post but I seem to remember reading that we were supposed to bring our emailed receipt to the gig - hope I remember correctly!

Anyway can't wait for tomozza night! :)

I'll be coming fromSheffield, where I'll be in a Very Important Meeting with a Very Large Bank all afternoon, so
a) I'm not sure what time I'll get to Derby (It's supposed to end at 4, which means that at 4:10 I'll be drumming my fingers on the table. In 7/8.)
b) If I'm running late and don't have  time to change, my attire will have been decided for me, and will be somewhat more formal than the evening requires!

Myself and Mrs. Mayonnaise will be there but first a few questions.

A) Is there any idea of what time the gig will finish, last train home is 22.45 and we'd hate to miss the end.

B) Is there anyone coming/going Birmingham way and interested in a car pool? Would be happy to pay towards petrol/biscuits

Alas, whilst I am coming from Redditch (just south of Brum), my trusty Mondeo is now in the scrapheap in the sky, and I'm bringing my girlfriend and MikeBass (who's like 6'4" tall!), in my parents' borrowed fiesta.
Not looking forward to the journey, but the end result is well worth it.

Great idea for the pre-gig meet up! I wont be leaving Lundun until after 3, alas so probably wont get to the pub before 1730. I'm staying at the Jury's Inn, if anybody else staying there will be getting in around that time there's taxi sharing potential.

Oh, and the postcode for the pub gives a slightly wrong result on google maps, it's actually about 150 yards closer to the uni, at the junction with the little side road a bit further along.

I get into Derby just after 3pm my hotel (Jurys Inn) is about a mile walk from the train station.  The venue is 1.5miles from my hotel and the Jonty is on the route to the venue for me so looks like a good place to stop midway to the venue :D

I'm keeping an eye on the traffic and we can wing it depending on the situation.  Northbound appears to be clear at the moment...

Oddly, there appears to be serious congestion just outside the Uni.  Must be the hordes of fans turned up early and blocking the traffic.  ;)

Just arrived at the Derby Travelodge- about 45 mins later than planned due to the fact that Travelodge's website AND your confirmation emails all give a postcode which is about 2 miles away.

Quite annoyed! Be warned people, and go by street names and not the postcode!

Indeed the gig was absolutely brilliant and there was definitely a more lively feel to the evening in my opinion.

However,
an unannounced support act and later starting time meant that a few of us had to miss from milliontown onwards to catch the train which was a right nuisance (luckily I'd already seen the show at Bilston so not too bad)

Also I thought the setlist was going to change? Still enjoyed it regardless and even got to meet the band at the Jonty Farmer for a quick chat and a photograph which was great :D

Looking forward to more news on the gig or a frost report or two.

Also, my name was spelt wrong on the t-shirt  :(

There was, indeed, something of a gig tonight!
Too knackered to say much right now but it was marvellous.
Could have done without the 2.5 hours standing around before Frost* came on at what was supposed to be a Frost*-only DVD shoot. Felt sorry for the Bradford lads (are they on here?) who, thanks to the late doors and pop-up surprise support prolly only saw 5 mins of Frost*. :(
It was -11 when we scraped the windscreen for the drive home!
Luvverly to see and day "hi" to so many Frost*ies at one gig...including Roger!
Just wish I could have thought of something to say when a random camera crew nabbed me afterwards...."erm....I'm their number one fan...." Jeez...

I think it was the same as the other nights.

TDL
Falling Down
Black Light
Pocket Sun
Hyper
Milliontown
Other Me

DDD

I believe that the dodgy timing and surprise support actually robbed us of a rendition of "Secret Song". I heard it in the sound check and Jem said they planned to play it but ran out of time.  :(

I've sung with PP&M before, but Cairn got to meet them and Peter even bought her a danish!

bittersweet, however (not the danish, that was delicious!) since this is their first Christmas gig at Carnegie without Mary.  sad.

We got collared by the film crew guys. You jsu go Errr....................What to say?
They asked Cameron about his drumming and i got the tattoo in aswell and rattled off something about midlife crisis
Had a quick chat with Jem and Mitchell who informed me id never get the tattoo off!
Im amazed how many people asked if it was real. It is!
Thanks to Craig to for making my sons night by getting him on stage for a photo of the kit with Craig.
He really wanted a go so he could do his rendition of Toys, Welcome to Nowhere or Pocket Sun. Although hes not sussed out the middle section of the last one yet. We asked Craig and he said he doesnt know what to do either. Just count to 16 and hit things was his reply. Top fella!

Oh, that's right! I do remember you mentioning that before. And, yes, sad about Mary. I'm glad they chose to continue and happy that you get to be a part of it.

Just back home in Scotland after a great evening.  Thank you to all the band for entertaining us, musically and with humour.  Special thanks to Jem for signing my Big Banana (ooo Matron!  ;) ).

And it was especially 'wondreful' to meet so many Frost*ies -some I haven't seen since Summer's End or the Peel in 2008 and others I met for the first time.  What a decent bunch you all are!

Pip pip!  8-)

Twas indeed brill, and really great to meet so many Frost*ies in the flesh for the first time  :D

Fig 0:

Many many huge thanks to Messers. Godfrey, Mitchell, Blundell and King for a fantastic nights fun, also to everyone else whose hard work made it all so brill. And especially Nellie, naturally.
The day did not go anything like I expected, with the possible exception of the actual gig.

Step 1: Train from Ludun to Derby, ETA 1610 - Train breaks down at Loughborough, doesnt get in until about 1700  :x
Step 2: Meet Fellow Frosties in Jonty Farmer at 1630 - finally arrive at 1810
Step 3: Expect there to a half-dozen or so Frosties there - there must have been 30-40!!! :D (see Fig 0, above)
Step 4: Go to gig, walking in -10deg C on lethal icy pavements - get given lift by kind Frostie to venue (Drarok, thx!), whose wonderous skill at driving on ice in borrowed car amazes  :)
Step 5: Wait for a bit outside hall... this one went to plan
Step 6: Get in, get beer, find good spot. Wait for somebody tall to stand in front of me - no-one does! Fantastic. :o
Step 7: Watch gig. Enjoy it enormously. Jump up and down a lot - Exactamundo.  :D
Step 8: Hang around after, have chat with Frost* members. This also went to plan. See Fig 1 and Fig 2, below.
Step 9: Get taxi back to Hotel with MikeEvs and Andy P. This sort of went to plan except I'd lost taxi number. MikeEvs to the rescue.
Step 10, Swift beer in bar then bed - This went tremendously pear shaped, in a good way. Had beer (thanks Andy P), watched England win 2nd Test. Turn around to find Mr. Mitchell standing next to me with Jem, Nathan, Nellie, Paul and others (apologies, drink has erased names from memory  :? ). Cue much revelry, then sleep (at about 2 I think  :D ) and sore head this morning. All in all, Bloody fantastic!  Thanks once again!

without reading the preceeding 8 pages - all I can think of with this thread title is DOH!  When I was sitting in the BnB all by myself waiting, waiting and waiting some more!  The BnB had free wifi and I was thinking should have brought a laptop with me...  :(

but I was really having a lovely time enjoying the peace and quiet and reading a book  :)

I shall now read this whole entire giant thread  :!:

Quote from: "LivingForever"I am well aware that people (and by "people" I mean "I") like to queue up stupidly early so as to be able to look up Jem's nose while he plays, or to examine JM's crotch from the front row (not me this time), .[/b]

hmmmm     Didn't even get past the 1st post!!

It is not my fault that he was wearing very revealing trousers at Islington.  I wasn't sure if I was pleased or disappointed when he wore normal trousers at Bilston and Derby

Quite amazed that it appears to have taken this long for anyone to comment on JM's seriously strange get-up in Islington - was it dark in the dressing room??

Hi All,

I just wanted to say 'thanks' to all the wonderful Frosties I met in the Cucumber and Hearing Aid (or whatever that pub with the ice rink outside was called), and I'm grateful to you for letting me gatecrash your meet-up.

I met some thoroughly nice folks, all very welcoming to a newbie.

Kudos to Mike Evs who ensured our safe return to the hotel, and to both Mike and JinjaBeardy for the great chat in the hotel bar afterwards.

I'll be in tough on the forum as often as possible, not going to 'cut and run' now... seems like a nice place to hang around!

Thanks again folks, hope you all got home safe and sound.

Andy

What on earth were these "very revealing trousers" like?
My mind is boggling. Is there photographic evidence, or would it outrage public decency to post it on the forum?

Or is this the new JM stagewear?

Isn't that Andy's teaching method at Kidderminster?

Andy's method is slightly more advanced: "Count to 16 at the same time as counting to 11 and hit things".

I did not take a camera.  However I will not mention this again after embarrassing both myself and JM on Saturday.  His response before running away from the scary fan was "I like those trousers"
