Title: Frost* Forum Collab Song - the Discussion thread (TDT!)
Post by: El_Mayonnaise on August 02, 2010, 02:18:47 PM
I'm only a nipper in the grand scheme of things but has a forum song been attempted yet?

Theres guitarists and drummers and synthists and more on the good ship frost so I don't see why not.

Of course if its been attempted, where is it? Was it good? Did it nosedive?

How bout it? :D

MOD EDIT: Renamed thread.

I think there have been several suggestions of collaboration, but I don't think any concrete plans have materialised yet.

There're plenty of lyrics in the limericks thread!  ;)

It'd be a mighty conquest.

I could imagine some problems arising in members dying to show off their chops though but then again whats so bad about that

A few rules might be useful though. For example, if we could have a master masterer so that no one starts turning the volume down on others parts. Only contributing one or two stems could be beneficial to us all too.

Lets get one of them dearest mods in on this as they seem to get quite a bit of respect  ;)

I agree that some kind of master structure would be useful if this project was to ever take off. It's the only form of structure we'd ever see in this place!

For example, did you know that Barahachhetra is a village development committee in Sunsari District in the Kosi Zone of south-eastern Nepal? At the time of the 1991 Nepal census it had a population of 8602 people living in 1695 individual households.

I tried to get one started but the obnus was on me to sort the framework and I am hopeless at completing projects.

RWA did a great track that had some Frost*ie input (bass I think).
I'll find the links later but I'm under pressure to do other things right now, like cook tea!

The only thing to get anywhere was RWA's excellent composition :-

The idea I had literally years ago, is still waiting for me to progress it :-

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1802#p32946 (http://www.frost-music.co.uk/frosties/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1802#p32946)

Might get re-inspired....one day.

That's pretty good that is.

It astounds me that a drummers job can be left to a robot so professionally. We're a dying breed I fear  :(

If anyone would care to donate anything else( a riff, beat, vocal line, fart etc) we can give this leviathan a kick up the backside and into first gear  :D

I've just signed up to SoundCloud (//http://www.soundcloud.com/ronaldwahle). That's an excellent place for a project like this. You can post public and private clips there and can drop comments and notes on the song image file itself.

Anyway, I would love to do something like this on 2 terms:
1 - There has to be some progress during the project. It shouldn't have to take years
2 - let's not make it anything serious! It has to reflect the spirit of this board, remember?!  ;)

The trouble I keep running into with the the thing I was trying to do is that it needs to be fully conceived before it can be worked on (the track needed full structure, click-track and guide chords/vocal).
It takes me FOREVER to get a project fully fleshed out...and that's when I'm reworking someone else's piece!  :)

Wasn't refering to that directly but it's a good example of how things can die in the process. If anyone wants to collab then make sure you deliver something within reasonable time. If you can't deliver... then .... don't participate.

I have some collaborating experience obviously and it's important promises are met otherwise it leaves everyone frustrated/dissapointed in the end.

Right!  :)

Your part is very usable Pedro. (Harhar!). No really, I think it would be nice it everyone did a section. Like building an epic with weird hooks and angles. It's prog so it can go anywhere. If anyone does 2 to 3 minutes it could end up being its own Milliontown in the end.

I have some ideas about a wacky intro that leads into your part (har!) Pedro. So it would be:
Part 1 - RWA
Part 2 - Pedro
Part 3 - the next genius!

Of course we can help eachother out finishing eachother parts (har!). Like one person doing the bass for the entire song or one drummer that does all the drums for all the part.

I'm more then wiling to take "the lead" in this. Not like a boss but like someone who keeps track of everything and puts the parts together. :)

Cool.
It would be great if someone like yourself, Ron, could try to herd the cats on this. I know what you mean by "not like a boss" but I would hope for someone just to make good-eared selections.

I wouldn't donate anything to the project if I wasn't prepared for it to be binned and this would be even easier to accept if the arbiter is a boney fido published muso, like your good self.  :)

So, if we are in business then I would want to give my part (har!) a bit of a polish (har!) for the actual thing.

Shall I put up a decent copy of just the electric piano intro bit as the first part (har!) or do we want the first "verse" as well?

How should parts (har!) be delivered? Separate wav files?

I imagined this being an iterative process where the sections are contributed and stitched together and then, when the shape of the piece (har!) is revealed (can you see what it is yet?) people might get a better feel (har!) for, say, an entire bass part (har!) that maybe fits better.

NOTE: The word "part" (har!) will be mercilessly moderated in this thread to ensure that the mandatory suffix "(har!)" is applied. An innuendometer index rating of 0.125 should be maintained throughout. ;)
Title: Re: Have we tried a forum song yet?

It will eventually turn out like this:

No seriously.
Yes, wav. parts are good but my experience is that working with mp3's is just fine as long as a track is still in progress.

I seriously think a SoundCloud account would be perfect. I set up a Frost Forum SoundCloud Collab Account (a so called FFSCCA....) and anyone who's collaborating gets the log in info from me so we can all put our stuff (har!) up there. I believe the "drop comments on the track" feature over there is excellent. You know, to point out certain sections (har!) or to explain what the hell you're trying to descibe.

Let me think about the details for a day, k?

In the meantime Pedro (har) send me the parts you've got so far. Preferably seperate.
You've got my e-mail address, right?!

In fact.... if anyone has anything to contribute then please do. I'll see if I can merge some sections together with Sonic Prog Glue XXL. Let's make this something crazy!

RWA has set up the FFCA over on SoundCloud. Of course, it's just a little FFCA now, but once a project catches fire, it'll be a hot little FFCA. Working together, we can make it the big FFCA I know it can be.

I may be inspired to start Musicians Uniquely Talented Helpers Account (MUTHA) and, who knows, maybe one day we'll do a joint project.

It's prolly best not to give me too much power...I don't want responsibility for the grate.
'Tis surely enough to have a dedicated topic for the serious stuff which, if collaborators are keen, will bump along towards the top of the page wihtou being too sticky.
If you, Ron, keep updating the first post in the topic then the current state of the project will be easy to find. N'est pas?

Slightly serious question, is this project going to contain lyrics? If so I think they should definitely be introduced where Pedro's theremin comes in. Possibly even replacing it with "ohhhhhs" and "ahhhs" ?
Title: Re: Frost* Forum Collab Song - the Discussion thread (TDT!)
Post by: gr8gonzo on August 14, 2010, 07:38:06 PM
I like to think lyrics are more my forte than actual playing (or lead singing, for that matter) and I'm more than happy to write. However, this seems to be starting off more like an overture, which wouldn't necessarily call for lyrics. That said, who's to say we can't combine segments of overture with segments of original material with vocals? Could be the coolest song structure ever done. No rules, right? I want steak.
Title: Re: Frost* Forum Collab Song - the Discussion thread (TDT!)
Post by: Pedro on August 14, 2010, 09:27:00 PM
If someone can make a vocal part work then my vote would be "why the heck not?". It's not something I have ever done successfully but that's prolly just because my singing voice is terrible anywhere other than in my head!
As the thing gets longer (har!) I'm sure there will be more song-like passages, as people who can write that way join in.

I can sing.. sort of. I have a pretty high voice, my range isn't too far from Dec (although he sings higher notes a lot cleaner). But I haven't done lead vocals before, at least not for real. That will be done soon, I'm working on a cover of a prog epic by one of the finest bands from the USA. If it works at all, I'll share it with you here, and maybe I could be useful for something... who knows?

I don't like my own voice.

I'm more of a baritone, better in the mid-lower registers. My tone falls in the Rick Springfield-David Cassidy-Lou Gramm-Barry Manilow area. I've always been more comfortable in a backing vocal role, but I've had a few outings singing lead. I'm willing to put up a sample or three. I love doing harmonies, anything from sporadic two-part (har!) to excessive Queen/Sweet/ELO-type stuff.

Tenor here.  Probably better for backing than lead.  It'd be a nice idea to get a load of people singing certain sections and layer them.  Then quality wouldn't matter as much as different character.

Well it just struck me that we're not all located in the same country. However, what more perfect way would there for fans of music to meet, than to meet up and record music that they've wrote?

All expenses paid for by Mr.Godfrey of course  ;)

LOL
Jem's a very generous guy but I think even he would draw the line at paying for studio time while numpties like me draw piano-roll notes with a mouse!
This might, of course, be different for those that can really play!

Sorry to announce chaps, but it looks like you'll be putting up with me in the "studio" as well - I'll try and behave  ;)  :D

Quote from: "Drarok"Seriously, I go away for a week or so and all hell breaks loose!

Can I come out to play?

Just back from holidays, and I'd love to play too!

I'm a guitar & bass player, but I have a few stringed instruments too (mandolin, ud, saz, valiha...)  ;)

(already dropped a pm to RWA)

Ah, I see I'm a little late to this party, but I'd love to contribute to something like this. I can do guitar, or a little synth, theremin, or indeed stylophone.  :P

Cool. I trust you have checked out the tech thread and contacted Ron?  :)

Can I just say, gentlemen, that the song so far is absolutely, utterly brilliant. Bravo all involved!  :D

I'm going to have to have more listens and maybe dream up a bit fit enough to consider for contributing. Possibly.  ;)

I don't know what's happening with this at the moment, but if anyone wants a bit of alto vocals I may possibly be of some assistance - or I'm at least happy to attempt to be of some assistance. Get me drunk and I might even do a bit of soprano stuff.

You can keep up with how far it has got in the tech thread but the latest version is Version 7 (//http://www.box.net/ffcs#/ffcs/1/50658372).

It is not complete (of course! - it's less than 30 minutes long!), the pitch-bend isn't working properly in Jem's solo (he played it, he just wasn't there at the time), and there are some other Jemful bits to go in I think.
There are folks working on new sections to be added in/on and there has been some talk of lyrics and vocals but not very much action on that front yet....but in the scheme of such things we haven't even made a scratch on our 3-years-in-the-making album timescale yet.  :)

Pass on the gin please!

Seriously, that's great Philadelphia. I assume people are working on their own parts (har!) right now. I kept a low profile myself this week because it was mainly Pedro and myself working on this. I have the feeling the two of us could turn this thing into a 30 minute epic if we kept going.  :)

But that was not the set up. Then again, if people want to collaborate (so far 17 members signed up) it does mean ....you actually have to ....  uhm... collaborate!

I dunno. Maybe I go to fast but that's me. Once I'm dedicated to something I keep going till it's done. That's how I get things done in general. Complete songs or even complete albums don't happen by just talking about it. You have to get yer ass in gear.  ;)

So! If you want to collaborate: here is the latest version: FFCS version 7 (//http://www.box.net/ffcs#/ffcs/1/50658372)

If you're ready to upload anything you can sign up by dropping me a pm containing your e-mail address. I'll then add you to the project and hook you up with your own custom "Philadelphia FFCS folder"!
