Well, coming from the continental contingent, I can say that it is already fifty minutes into 2010 here in the Netherlands, and the local nutters are still trying to blow themselves up in the street by lobbing fireworks willy-nilly all over the place

Reminds me of living in Berlin: there it was like a final days of World War 2 re-enactment every December 31, people firing rockets sideways across streets under passing cars and into other people's apartment windows, amidst general mayhem across the city.

For once, I reckon we Brits have taken the slightly more sensible approach to celebration: can you imagine the streets of the UK tonight if the pissed revellers piled out of the pubs and started letting off rockets at each other?

Anyway, lest I give the impression of being a killjoy ( :!: ), let me nevertheless end by joining JIB in wishing all Frosties* a very fine New Year wherever you are in the world and which ever way you choose to celebrate: cheers!  :D

Happy New Year - and congrats on  your newly acquired boaster-hood, JiB!

TA, the streets of the village where I live are filled with fireworks at present. My poor cat is quaking in the kitchen. He's a nervous wreck at present as the burglar alarm went off yesterday and the day before while I was at work when the heating came on at 4pm and the rising hot air from the radiators caused the christmas cards strung up on strings far too close to the detector to flap around and set the alarm off.

and to all over there, who have hit 2010 or are getting close, Happy New Year!

it's only 7:22pm here, so we've a ways to go!

Well, p'raps it's because you live in the English lowlands, Catherine: weren't loads of cloggies imported from over here to help drain the marshes? Must've brought their fiendish gunpowder toys with 'em as well ;)

Is it just me though, or have the Brits been pretty much weened off personal fireworks over the years? I certainly remember endless lectures at school and on the telly back in the 1970s about losing an eye or being burned by fireworks; I even have vague memories of being taken into a hospital with my class to see some hapless victims (although I'm fairly sure that's unlikely to be true).

I would even have gone as far as to say that they're nigh on impossible to buy in the UK any more as a private individual, but I suppose your locals have proven me wrong on that one as well.

Still, it scared the living nightlights (sorry) out of me tonight to see some young kids, seven or eight, chucking lit catherine wheels onto the street, launching rockets from their hands, and looking straight down the barrel of some (apparent) duds seconds after lighting them, all under the supervision of their father. Sheesh ...

From October onwards those mysterious Firework Shops open.  Very peculiar, what do these people sell the rest of the year?  It isn't good, especially for animals.  It would always be keep your pets inside on the 5th November, now it is keep your pets inside for 3 months.

So good morning and a Happy New Year & New Decade to everyone.  I am sad that this will be the fifth decade that I have lived in, but as it hasn't got a name, I'm going to pretend it doesn't count.

I'm sure the media will come up with a clever, intelligent and appropriate* name fairly soon.

*For clever, intelligent and appropriate read stupid, crass and frankly rather shit.

And..... relax.

Sad to say I'm glad to get back to work. The last couple of weeks have been utter chaos. Fun chaos, but not conducive to Getting Things Done.
Like reading the Frost*ie forum, let alone posting on it.

So Happy New Decade everyone, and congrats to JiB for sneaking in his 1000th (ya sly ol' Boaster!)

Well, former chaotic nights of wine, women and prog have been replaced by more certain comforts: chief among which being a good night's kip.

Hmmm, haven't we had conversations here before about two items off your list being usually mutually incompatible ...  :?

Oh, no; that was with Mouse ... (sorry, young squeaky furry chap; couldn't resist  ;) )

Touché, sir. In that regard at least, you got me bang to rights  ;)

Still, the way the world's going, I'm beginning to wonder whether being youthful is a virtue these days  :(
