Just that we were logged in? or that it had been read?
Maybe we should have put a time on it.

Looks like he's gone.
If you open one, it marks the other one as not being new, i.e no new messages, but you still have one message saying unread.

Both have disappeared from my outbox.
That suggests to me that it's the act of viewing your inbox that "delivers" the PM.

There's a discussion about the PM system on the PHPBB support forum here but all it says is "this looks broken", "no it's not", "it's counter-intuitive then", "actually, it isn't" and descends into not so much a flame war as a hair-dryer skirmish.
