Frost* / The impossible tour (Friday nonsense)
January 20, 2017, 10:39:24 AM
As seen on Wikipedia, the ideal location for the last ever Frost* concert, whenever that happens to happen.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bifr%C3%B6st_(town)

Working back from that, feel free to add (ir)relevant locations for Frost* concerts based on funnery, punnery and quips and so forth for an impossible tour that probably cannot happen (ridiculous sponsorship fees notwithstanding).

Gear Corner / The new telly thread
July 12, 2016, 12:44:49 PM
Hello

I realise there are more specialist forums out there for telly stuff but I'm not signed up to many and would like to avoid the whole getting-to-know-you thing of joining a new forum/board etc.

Basically I am contemplating getting a new television and wondered if anyone had any advice they can share. I have quite a specific set of requirements...

1. I've never owned a flat-screen/plasma/LCD tv before. I'm still a CRT enthusiast
2. This has largely been a financial choice (I last bought my main LG Netee second hand 12 years ago), but also an aesthetic one; I love the way the Netee looks, and...
3. I have LOADS of VHS tapes which I still like watching, and they look just great on my CRT (Marillion Sight-and-Sound in concert from Chippenham Golddiggers anyone?). Many DVDs too. I have been to people's houses who have flat screen TVs and have been dismayed at how bad DVDs can look!
4. However, ye olde CRT is on its last legs
5. I've now moved to a small house where the best use of space would be to have a wall-mounted flat screen telly, though I still have space for a few boxes (e.g. players/machines)
6. I have only recently begun to investigate streaming/on-demand services and they are hard to get going on the CRT (I have a little Android box which does good things but the menus are so hard to read)
7. I'm not a gamer and have no plans to be (seemingly the main reason for my friends all shelling out for massive tellies)
8. Previous attempts at converting VHS to other formats always end up going nowhere (either time or quality or disc space or something else runs out and I just watch the tape instead!)

So, I was wondering if in the biscuit land of the Frost*ie forum if there is anyone like me who has investigated the merging of analogue (VHS) via DVD and into the land of LCD and 4K and knows what I might think about doing? In particular if anyone has already got a brand of TV that they really like and why they really like it (even if they aren't VHS inclined). I have had a look at other forums for example and have seen people saying "Oh <insert-brand> TVs lack a <particular thing> which means <old retro format> will always look bad on them".

Any thoughts out there?

Gear Corner / All about the bass

Those of you that like bass and gear may be interested (or already know) that Frost*'s own 60Hz controller, Nathan King, is featured in the new videos about bass that Andertons music store are putting out at the moment.

Blunders is also on some of the older Roland e-drumming ones as well.

Saw them last night at Aylesbury. Utterly awesome! If you have tickets or are thinking of going to any of the other shows, they should be really good if last night was anything to go by!

Gear Corner / How I did it back in '98...
August 25, 2015, 11:26:43 AM
I put a video up over the weekend of one of my old releases from my band-with-a-stupid-name from 1998.

https://youtu.be/xWRJdqUtFdg

The reason I am posting it here is that the original CD came with a booklet which explained how the collection of songs came about and how it was recorded and with what instruments (Yamaha TQ5, SHS-10/sholky and Rex 50, Boss DR-550, Freebass FB-383 and assorted other bric-a-brac).

I decided to make the "video" of this using this text, so it slowly scrolls up the screen throughout the first 4 or 5 songs and may be of interest to gear-heads. In the background is a photo of all the gear.

I will say upfront that the music may not be of interest to anyone - it is mostly very harsh and industrial and not very melodic in a proggy sense. But you can always turn it down and listen to something else if you do want to read through it all.

Listened to this last night for the first time in absolutely aaaaaaaages.

It's not really proggy, more on the Pulp-esque whimsical end of indie, so not for everyone on this board. But I was struck by the amount of mellotron-ish stuff on there, lots of atmosphere and some beautiful harmonies too, so figured it was worth mentioning it in case listening to it brightened anyone's day in the way rediscovering it did for me.

It's on YT in its entirety for anyone who is curious. Interestingly I bought it back in 1999 on the same day as I bought another old fave, the first Slipknot album; always been eclectic, me :D

Friends Of Frost* / Andy jam
March 15, 2015, 07:39:24 PM
Hello

See here for a video of me jamming along with Andy Edwards on my Mobius Megatar.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKyZD-3r7C8

I should point out in case you can't watch the video that I am not actually in the same room - this is just me playing along with a video! I had this idea ages ago and often jam to drumming videos, but I only got around to making this particular video yesterday. Andy was cool with the idea about 4 years ago when I emailed to ask if it was okay, but if the vid disappears suddenly it might be down to a change of heart (understandable after listening to my inexpert tapping :)).

Anyway, there you go! Note Frost* hat of course (though mostly out of shot).

In hindsight I wish I'd got more space to make it bigger (and therefore a better representation of a cassette).

But I don't, so there you go.

Any Other Business / Who are these people?!
July 16, 2014, 08:42:18 AM

So! The short story here is that I've bought a bunch of old, expired film over the years and have always thought it was unused, even if it was expired. Good for testing cameras with and of course you can get some nice effects too.

This photo however came off a film that wasn't fresh or new - someone had used it before! I don't mind so much about my shots not coming out, but I feel bad that this film was unintentionally ruined by me.

So I want to find out who the people in the image are and what they were doing!

Where do I start?!

Hello

Dusted off an old recording of my band, Small Machine, playing an "acoustic" set back in 2010 (me [bass] and the lead guitarist were plugged in).

Here it is, free download and all! Last track is a bit rude.

Enjoy (if you enjoy)!
