Friends Of Frost* / Re: Music I made in my youth

Cheers guys.  Unfortunately, our keyboardist left to work in first Edinburgh, then Seattle, so we had to call it quits a few years ago.  He was a bit too good to replace, really, but there's still an intention to write/record material in our respective home studios and collaborate in that way, so may get a bit more out yet.

JM is a huge influence on my playing, so yeah, a lot of my solos are spent in the Mitchell-space :D

Hey All,

Some of you may know me as the second guitarist in Dec Burke's live gigs, but I don't think anyone is really aware of my old projects.

Thought that some of you here may be interested in hearing some of the bands I was in back in university.

First up, Cakeflap.

This was a prog/jazz-fusion-y outfit I was in with some close friends.  We had one song and it's this big'un:

The guitar solo from the middle is lifted from a piece I worked on with the keyboardist of the band, called Quest for the Celestine Spatula, which is silly prog stuff, but I love it to bits.  You can hear it here:

And if you like your prog more cheesy rock/metal flavoured, the band I was in for my entire time at uni, along with members of Cakeflap was called Replica X.  A couple of tracks up on the Myspace below were recorded for our second EP at John Mitchell's Outhouse Studios, which was pretty daunting for the massive Frost*/Kino fanboy that I am, but really good fun and John and Ben did an awesome job in the short time we gave them.

Hope you enjoy.

Cheers

Cheers for the write-up, Pedders.  I have to say, I watched almost the entirety to the Magenta set from the balcony and I have never witnessed another band like it.  Truly deserving of the response they got and a real education for me.  Looking forward to catching them again, for sure.

Oh, and our new bassist is Steve Woodcock.  He's a fantastic player and it's great to have him on board.  Roll on October and the next bunch of gigs :)

I was actually lucky enough to be at the Yellow Matter Custard gig in New York two weeks ago while on holiday.  I was walking down Broadway looking for a show to watch, but they're closed on Mondays.  Then I passed BB Kings and spotted "Yellow Matter Custard" and thought "Oh, there must be another Beatles cover band with the same name".  I crossed the street to take a look and it turned out to be the real deal.  Of course, I had to see it and the wife is a huge Beatles fan, so she was happy to see it.  Amazing gig with some fantastic playing.  Was stood next to a cameraman, but didn't realise it was for a proper DVD.  Will have to pick that up.

Haha.  We ended up packing the cars up at 1:15am and driving back to the hotel.  Steve's car got stuck in the car park, I fell over on the icy loading ramp...  Was a brilliant night, though.  Cheers to everyone who came and spoke to us after the show.

I'm going to be stepping in to provide Dec with some sonic reinforcement in the form of acoustic guitar and backing vocals.  Really looking forward to it, but would have been great to see the Jem/Dec combo.

Well, to be fair, they're terrible at letting anyone know about it... Their facebook and myspace are sadly out of date.
