So, Matthew Herbert's got a new one out - 'There's Me and There's You'.

The agenda for the album sounds very good, usual mix of fun meets hardcore politics (mainly anti-iraq-war and anti-neocon as per usual). And it's with the big band - Goodbye Swingtime was just majestic.

But he's always a bit of an odd one (not unlike our dear leader). For all the poptastic loveliness of 'Scale', there's a 'Plat du Jour' just round the corner. Not that I don't think the latter is a work of sonic genius...it's just that I don't *enjoy* listening to it. (cf Kid A)

So can anyone enlighten me as to whether it should be a last-minute addition to the Xmas list?

He's something of a Jem favourite - funky house meets musique concrete.

Realised he's on myspace (given his politics that must have been a tough one)

Oooh, and tons of clips on his own site. Recommend 'Moving Like A Train' here or 'The Audience' here. The latter is always done with audience (and Dani Siciliano) samples recorded on the night.

wow.  that album is from 2006?  crazy.

Yeah, there's bit of 'Moving Like a Train' that are pure microhouse, other parts that are pure Manhattan Transfer. And that's no bad thing.  :-)

The first big band album is worth a look too. Try Fiction on http://www.matthewherbert.com/music.php?release=2018
Is it Kurt Weill, is it Miles Davis, is it Butch Vig?

There's more hardcore experimental stuff on Plat du Jour - everything is made out of the sounds of food.

alright, I'm a bit embarrassed to admit this, but...

I opened the links that Tom had posted, and thought I was listening to the food music. well, I was, but, unbeknownst to me, the big band stuff was playing, also.

it worked.

Hey, that's avant garde house in a nutshell. :-)
