Title: Frost and Dream Theater
Post by: Jem on February 27, 2009, 12:45:28 PM
In case you hadn't heard ;-)

This just in from the Frost Publicity Imp.

"Frost* are well chuffed to announce that we will be supporting Dream Theater at two shows in England this summer. These shows are:

  12th June  Leeds 02 Academy
  13th June  Southampton Guildhall

Dream Theater and Frost* fans will know that Mike Portnoy nominated Experiments in Mass Appeal as one of his favourite albums of 2008.  Whilst we were were unable to take up the offer of playing on DT's Progressive Nation tour of the US this year, we're thrilled to be asked to play these shows following our appearance at RoSFest in May."

Wow - Jem & Nozza on the same bill!  :D  How many notes will get played each night?

Neither Leeds nor Southampton is exactly close but I must try to get to one of them.  Miss DS (Snr) has been going on about seeing Frost* live for ages and she also likes some DT so she may get her wish this time.

O2 in Leeds. Kids under 14 allowed with an adult!
Bonus
Don't know what my lad would make of Dream Theater though.
I liked the first album, the second slightly less, and the third even less, all the others i've heard i couldn't stand for some reason.

Major result for me & Cosmic

The Southampton gig is during the Isle of Wight Festival Weekend - I don't care WHO is headlining, we are making our way over to Southampton for the evening!  Hey, maybe a spot in the Big Top at the IOW Festy the next day may be in order.....Jem - don't suppose you have John Giddings phone number on speed dial somewhere?...... 8-)

I've not been to either venue before - are they seated or standing ?  Just wondering in terms of whether I need to try for somewhere specific when I get my tickets.

The Leeds one is a good location for going from work, and Southampton is more convenient from home, so thank you for arranging them on the correct days  ;)

Good question, all standing may be a problem for the younger ones.

Edited update.... Southampton Guildhall appears to have tiered stalls and a balcony... That'll do!  :D  :D

Southampton tickets successfully purchased from the helpful man at the box office.  8-)

For info it appears that the stalls will be standing... all the Frost*ies to the front please!
(Seating up in the tiered seats at the back.)

This is probably a good move, I saw Queensryche there last summer and the stalls were all seated, the problem being a bunch of people in the front few rows failed to get the hint that seats mean you sit down and stood through the whole thing which buggered things up somewhat for those behind. Luckily we were on an aisle seat so were not particularly affected.
So anyway standing is cool with me.

WHOO_HOOO!  :D

As the Brom party will be of mixed ages and mixed "enthusiasm" - Mrs. B likes some of DTs stuff, but I can't really see her moshing!, then again I may be surprised. Anyway we will be giving our support from the balcony.

Two standing purchased for Southampton. Although I've no idea if I can actually make it yet, I have no desire to be left in the lurch by procrastination as I nearly was for the Peel (thanks again, Twang  :D )

I'm embarrassed to admit that I bought mine via TicketBastard simply because I couldn't be bothered to work out the O2 mobile thingy, but I'll live, I suppose.

One question I have for people who know the Guildhall (CL?): my tickets are for the standing area, although I realise that there may be stalls. Row number is GA1 and the tickets 85-86; however, I suspect that means General Access and the 85th and 86th tickets sold, since there are no seats 85-86 in the seating plan. True? Will it be a general rush to the front and otherwise stand wherever you like ... ?

If true, then I also suspect that Frosties* have bought more than half the tickets sold thus far ... long may it continue  :D

Yup, in terms of standing it's just an expanse for all us obsessed Frosties* to get right involved in :) It's a pretty good venue actually! There's a lovely little pub across the road as well we could all go to afterwards that's open late :)

I propose a Frost*ie mexican wave for Southampton!  Hey, we'll all look like we're in Pedro's video swaying about in our Frost* tops at the front of the stage  :) (I was writing this whilst Cosmic was writing his - we have two computers - spooky!)

If you'd rather call for tickets at Southampton Guildhall here's the box office number: 02380 632601

I think the last standing gig I went to there was Alice Cooper last July and it was roasting, you can sit on the carpeted floor whilst you're waiting for the band though.  The balcony seating is ok, as is tiered, it's obviously a way back from the stage but you should catch everything.  For anyone travelling by train just hop off at Southampton Central Station and it's literally a short walk across the road to the Guildy.  We'll be coming straight from the IOW Festival so see you there - I must say, I'm bloody excited already!

Sounds good to me ... both the Free Frostie* Bopping Zone down the front (I recall the Summer's End gig where we managed to get the floor a-bouncing collectively  :D ), plus the pub too. That said, if I do make it, I'll be facing a 2.5 hour drive home afterwards, so it'll be a St Clement's for me ...  :(

I'm in the "keen to hear DT too" camp though; never have live, although methinks it'd be too much to ask for a full performance of Metropolis Pt. 2, eh?  ;)

I used to be a huge DT fan but the last few albums have left me a bit cold unfortunately.  They're normally good value live though.

Interestingly, they do have a reputation for supporting up and coming bands and boosting them onto the next level.  First time I saw DT, the support band was Spock's Beard.  On the next tour, support was Porcupine Tree.  I rest my case!  Jem, you'd better get ready to shift a shed-load (Cube-load?) of CDs and t-shirts!

Ironically it'll probably be a two hour wait for a ferry for us, even though we're literally just over the water if you miss the 11pm the next one is 1am and it takes an hour to get back over to the Island - so you'll probably be in bed before us!

Thanks for reminding me of the bouncing floor at Summer's End - I remember me and Cosmic exchanging glances when we realised it wasn't the bass making the floor bounce!

A quick word of warning about Southampton Guildhall - when they convert the stalls into standing only, the balcony starts a good 3/4 of the way back - so even if you're in the front row, that stage is going to be quite a long way away.

Mind you, sounds like most of you have gone for standing ones anyway! I'll see you there... :D

Tee hee! No, it's always in the same place, but if there's seating in the stalls, then the back section of the stalls is tiered, and sort of marries up with the seats that form the balcony - I don't think that the 'balcony' ever actually overhangs anything - it just forms one long tiered section. So you can see why 'front row of the balcony' is not exactly a hot ticket in this particular venue.

That said, it's pretty good for atmosphere - I've been to some cracking gigs there, and I'm looking forward to this particular one immensely!  :D

Download is Friday/Saturday/Sunday, Leeds is on a Thursday! Set up camp at Download, get to Leeds then back to Download on Friday morning! I would have done that if I was going to Download. In fact I would probably have missed the Friday night for Southampton.

Just noticed from Jem's Twitter feed that TBE will be playing the two DT gigs in the UK. And I thought we'd seen the back of him ...  ;)

The feed also mentions the possibility of another couple of DT support gigs likely to be in Europe with Alex playing.

Where, Jem? Where?

First : I was really hoping to see Andy there, so the aforementioned excitement level yet reaches new heights !

Second : YEAH, WHERE ?! 'Cause if you plan on opening for DT in France (though no gigs are currently announced except the Hellfest), I know quite a large bunch of people who would definitely join me there :)

Anyway, this is starting to become a truly awesome year for Frost* !

MONDAY, MARCH 09, 2009

Likwid Tenshun Xperimants in Mass Appeal
Frost will be 'special guests' of prog metal giants Dream Theater on selected dates on their up and coming summer tour.
I have decided to come out of my gigging semi-retirement and so I will playing drums on some of these with my old Frosty chums.
The dates I'm playing on will be...

12th June Leeds 02 Academy
13th June Southampton Guildhall

There may be some more dates in Europe, and I'm hoping my old mate Alex Thomas will be playing on these, watch the Frost website for more details.

You may like or dislike their music, but DT on stage is still something to be seen, really. I've seen them three times (four if I include LTE), and they managed to be amazing each time, in different fashions. Their most recent releases were, well, let's say it wasn't a good as what they did during the pre-SFAM era. But on stage you can still feel the magic :)

Did a bit of research today and the O2 Academy in Leeds is apparently what became of a nightclub called "Creation" on Cookridge Street.
Thanks to the geek-fest that is the dubiously nosey GoogleCar, here is a street-level image of the building....

In other news, I have booked hotel for Leeds gig. Is there a pre-show get together happening ?

I'm afraid my burgeoning Twitter habit means I've lost the thread of the, errr, threads hereabouts so apols if referenced elsewhere. :)

Just sorted out train tickets to from Neath to Leeds and Southampton - Neath.

Originally it was looking like £98 from Neath to Leeds and £78 Southampton - Neath which I wasn't to thrilled about, but looked at catching later trains than I originally asked for and ended up with Neath - Leeds £33 get into Leeds around 16:40 on the 12th and Southampton - Neath £11 :D  although it does mean spending most of the Sunday in Southampton and not leaving till 20:50, I can think of worse places to spend the day

Hi James I still it's still a fairway off but any idea if this is still possible? Not sure if you've got tickets for both as I know Southampton is showing as sold out now.

Reason I ask is that train tickets from Leeds - Southampton are available for £32.50 at the moment but I know these are limited and won't be available long and once the advance tickets have gone the price rockets to over £100.

Cheers
Mike
