Post by: Nellie on July 09, 2012, 07:47:51 AM
There is a very limited number of tickets available to buy onThe Merch Desk. When they have sold out, tickets will be available via ticketweb.

Quote from: "...and Trapezium Artist"Since Pedro's announcement of this year's Frost* AGM (with IB to boot; who's supporting who  8-)?) at The Scala on December 16 is in a locked thread, I'm compelled to open a new one in order to say:

Spiffing news!

(p.s. hope all you lucky Celebr8 attendees had a good time; do let us know, won't you?)

Booked! :D

Work got in the way of Celebr8, but I'm not missing this one. It'll also be a nice anniversary for my last voyage to the UK.

I do get to see IB after all.

Pedro: I've merged the two separate topics we had going into one (to try to avoid confusion...but I got rather confused doing it!!). Everyone's posts on the topic are in here, but I have had to shuffle Nellie's announcement to the top (cos that's the important one!).

I would have been very peeved if those tickets had sold out this weekend before the fan forum had a chance to get some.

I want...

I'm checking plane costs and I just might be able to make it by December.

Does anybody know of some cheap place to stay in London for a week? Any place will do. I just need a roof, the rest is optional.

Word is (via Twitter) that Nellie has sold out of the limited number she had.
Further tickets will need to be obtained via Ticketweb

So, Who is on first? Surely Frost* are the headliners, right? ;)

Double Headliner...I don't really care which way around...I'd actually like Frost* first so that Jem etc. can relax and enjoy It Bites with the rest of us. :)
I'm also kind of hoping for a small amount of combined play too...

That's the place alright - the venue where I first saw Frost* as support to the Flower Kings.
They played Hyperventilate, BLM and Milliontown.  Mr Jowitt sold me a CD and then I got them all to sign it - a great night.
Ticket no 17 in hand....

Hello people, let me share some some info. If you could spread it around I'd be so chuffed. :D

I have to make an appointment with the good people at the Scala to sort out venue details & stuff. They have a policy (all London venues do) that tickets have to be released through Ticket Web, link or whatever. Full details after the venue meeting. We'll then post, plug & scream the links & stuff.

SO DON'T PANIC!! You will able to get tickets very, very soon for those who have not through themerchdesk at CELEBR8 :D

FROST* BITES is going to be sponsored by Prog mag as well. :D

We will fully inform you of everything when all is sorted. :D

Nellie was only allocated 100 of them to sell at Celebr8. We sold about half of them on the Saturday and another good load on Sunday, so it's not surprising that they sold out so quickly on TMD. Don't panic, everyone - The Scala can hold a LOT of people (I heard 1,200 from someone, don't kow if this is totally accurate), so there should be enough to go round...  :)

I got No. 003!  :D  :D

Scala site says capacity is 1,145...I have worrying memories of watching Frost* from a distance where the curvature of the earth became significant and the many Dream Theater fan armpits surrounding Mrs. Pedro's nose were not too fragrant.

I'm sure those effects will not apply on December 16th. :)

Hi all,

A few things about the show. :D

On line tickets are available here at £20 (subject to booking fee)

 http://www.scala-london.co.uk/scala/event.php?id=1902 (http://www.scala-london.co.uk/scala/event.php?id=1902)

Or you can pick them up from the Scala box office in person 10am - 6pm  (No Booking Fee if you get them from the Box Office. in person  This show is sponsored by Prog Magazine!

Although the Scala is an 18+ venue, if you personally contact the venue they will use their discretion. I am NOT allowed to advertise this so, please, please do not go overboard. It is the law and not the venue that make these rules. The lovely people at the venue informed me of this at the meeting yesterday. I know we are only talking about a small amount of under 18's.

It is up to the venue, not me. Too many will result in me getting into a heap of legal trouble & the last thing I want to do is upset anyone. I need to work again. :D

Thank you all xxxxx

QuoteRe: Capacity their website must be wwong, but that's fine by me

Or more likely that could be the maximum capacity/fire reg's version. Quite a few venues have a maximum capacity that is more than the number of tickets they sell, to account for their own staff, security etc and also depending on the type of event being staged - i.e. a club/disco night needs less in the way of floor space for the sound man/PA etc than a regualr gig. And it might also mean that they need additional staff/security etc for the full capacity, so they've played it cautious and only put an initial amount on sale to see how it sells, based on the recent IB tour and Twang's experience.
You also need to factor in the number of guest/press etc tickets, and also it may be that 800 is a more 'comfortable' number of people in the venue.
All that said, I wouldn't be surprised if, once the 800 are sold, a few more become available 'due to public demand' (Although I am in no way ITK on this, pure speculation on my part)

Awww, cheers mate! REALLY appreciate you finding this out. I may do as you suggest and contact the venue to see what they say, however, if there is any element of doubt re. +16 admission I would probably not chance it in case it all went pear shaped at the door, plus of course no one wants the name of Twang to be hauled up for questioning!

Thanks again for everything!  :D

Do give them a bell.

Not sure about logging yet; it kinda depends if this will be pleasure only or work (on music with John Beagley) + pleasure. Well, it's all pleasure obviously but he lives in Harrow so it might be sensible to find something there. If not, I'll book something in King's Cross near the venue. Travelling will be train all the way; convenient and rather cheap.

Another option is to fire up Google Maps and find a nice bridge to sleep under.  :D

Right! I'll be travelling to London (by train) on the 14th and leave again on the 17th. I'll be teaming up with John (Beagley) Friday night and Sunday afternoon/night. This gives me time for sigh seeing and some Christmas shopping on Saturday and hanging out with Frosties on Sunday me thinks. And a lot of "bugger off" and "that the dog's bullox mate" and "fuck no!" random shouting on the streets of London. I'll fit right in, eh?!  ;)

Now let's find an accommodation near King's Cross. Any recommendations?

Now, speaking of uniforms and customised t-shirts, I'd like to talk with the vendors (Nellie, VitP, listen up  ;) )

My beloved shirt has plenty of wear still in it, but unfortunately the letters spelling out my forum name are already peeling off (how appropriate  8-) ), and thus I need some practical guidance in how to reaffix them.

Should I iron them through a tea towel, for example? Super glue? Staple gun? Or knowing that my infamy as a forum member proceeds me, should I just remove them all and go into stealth Frost*ie mode?  :)

Help!

I'm still lurking about, and I've been keeping an eye on this. I can now confirm a booked flight for London as well as tickets for the gig (hoping to bring a few friends along). This won't be my first time, so I'm up for a pre-gig meeting if such activities are being planned. Last time I met up with Vitamin P and some other guys, which was pretty nice.

Can't bro. Saving money here.

I appreciate your concerns, I really do.... but please don't make this into a tragic thread. I know we have a good tradition of taking stuff WAY south over here but this is not the place and time for it.

This is about a happy gig and I'm trying to sell my tickets, k?!  ;)

Sorry to hear it, RWA :(

Would very much like to attend another post-Frost* curry. Was a belter after last christmas's Frost* do.

I hesitate to wish it on LFE again, since it seemed like a stressful affair, but it WAS great...

Can only agree wholeheartedly: someone needs to organise a post-gig curry, full stop. I'd do it myself, if it wasn't for the fact that I'm in no way a local and I suspect some on-the-spot negotiations might be needed to ensure that the restaurant will stay open to cater to us.

Ooooh - Currytastic! Count me in!

From the experience of last time a few suggestions from Sawtooth's World of the Bleedin' Obvious:

A: Work from the eat in prices rather than the take out prices  ;)
B: Build an agreed tip into each dishs' price
C: Either each table pays individually for it's booze bill or we set up a modest separate tab for drinks which we can top up later into the evening?
That way there should be fewer surprises and early leavers would pay for a fairer share of the drinks bill.
D: We all keep a note of what we've ordered (I didn't have a clue by the time I arrived worse for alcoholic wear at the restaurant)  :D

Waddayafink peeps?
(And James - if you do succumb to the intense forum pressure to return to your exalted post of Curry Organiser, I'd like to say a big fankyou in advance and I can only echo RobRideouts comment, that last years curry was really GREAT for loads of reasons. I bow to your courage and foolhardiness!).  ;)  :D

But never mind all that: what about the curry? What's the news? I've booked my flights (courtesy of a large collection of British Airways frequent flyer miles, sorry "Avios) and a hotel (the apparently rather dodgy Travelodge Royal Scot, but it was cheap), so now it's all about the curry.

That said, I might not be able to stay as late as I did last time, since I'll need a least a little beauty sleep before getting a flight back from London City at 07:55 the following morning, to be back at work in time to show the Chief Scientific Adviser to the President of the European Commission some nice shiny bits of big space kit ... Not sure I can help with that, Pedro, not being a local, although since it's very close to King's Cross, I imagine that parking will be difficult, while public transportation will be easy.

But the real question is, what's the State of Curry Play?  At this point, no news is beginning to seem very much like bad news

You should be able to park up somewhere on a sunday ok, if you drive along parkhurst rd passed the scala [comeing from kingscross] turn left two or three turnings down and have a mooch about there and you should find somewhere there maybe on a sinlge yellow or a p.d bay which are mostly free on a sunday, but check times to be sure, just be prepared to look about a bit, but when i go up the angel on a sunday i normally dont find it too much of a problem.

Well I've finally booked my hotel and parking at the Travelsplodge Royal Scot, and 24hr parking was cheaper than the Kings Cross station overnight rate.

The bad news was I reckoned without the Congestion Zone and the car park entrance is about 2 yards inside it
I think it still works out cheaper overall though.

So I can now eat, drink and make a complete fool of myself  :D

For anyone still to book accommodation, be aware that Travelsplodge prices are a bit up and down at the moment. I originally booked at the weekend, but I've just checked and the price is showing £20 cheaper today. I had cancellation insurance, so I cancelled and rebooked at the cheaper price.
Very strange, normally the prices ramp up to a silly level the nearer you get to your stay.

Kings cross is one of those places you pass through I guess. Thinking back to when I lived in London and spent a good deal of time exploring pubs, nothing from that area comes to mind - apart from the original Shires bar at St Pancras, which of course has now sadly gone.

From a net search this lunchtime, the one that caught my interest was:

http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/ ... ings_Cross (http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/30/3054/McGlynns/Kings_Cross)

This is not a recommendation - just a suggestion for consideration.

I think we will be parking in the station car park and trying to get there early enough to form or join the queue for doors. The two (ahem) "full" 70 minute sets are going to be over in a twinkle and (cue for song) I don't want to miss a thing.
Socialising time afterwards is likely to be a bit limited too due to the location, it being a Sunday night and it not being too fair to make the rest of my party stand around waiting while I say hi/goodbye to everyone else in the room! :)

I've really not had time to sort anything, sorry guys. And with it being a Sunday night, and last train home being at midnight, and having work on Monday morning I can't see me wanting to sit down and eat a curry at 11pm in any case...

Sorry.... blame Twang for putting it on a Sunday night! But don't let me stop anyone else!

I guess if we're all at the pub early enough and want to nip out for some food during the afternoon then we could make it an impromptu one? But make no mistake, there is no way I am missing a second of either band and I'm not getting stuck at the back either...  :D

I'll see everyone later.

Sorry, Blame Monday morning on my part... Yawwwwn.

The bits I remembered, a walk on similar to Rosfest with mods, a "What Ho" then straight into a new song. Then Hyperventilate, another new song, BLM, some very funny band interplay involving a "Brummie" Speak and Spell, (hope Pedro's vid captured this!) That led into a sample triggered loop (did that morph into a new song?, don't recall) then Dear Dead Days, more band sillyness involving a drum "duel" with Blunders (who was on superb form) vs Jem on ironing board!Milliontown in full to finish. Sadly no encore.

From where we were, 2nd balcony opposite Blunders, the sound was excellent, balanced just right for most of it. JM's guitar cut through brilliantly, lost a little of the Keys at times, but then we were the wrong side of the stage, if that makes sense.

Glad we opted for doors rather than the pub, several Frosties in close proximity in the queue, but it looks like lots took ages to get in  and missed the opening of the set. Then they found themselves crammed at the back of staircases.

Great to meet up with L33Vey, Julie, LFE, Philly, Pedders, Ash, TA, Nells. Most of those were brief as my gig buddy shot out at the end before I got a chance to say hello post-gig.

Shame you missed it, it was a good'un.  :D  :D

Oh yes, IT Bites were there as well

Or not, as the case may be (the FB link is kaputt)  :(

Despite being one of the relatively late-comers from the pub, I managed to wiggle close to the front on the premise that I needed to give Pedro some money, and there I stayed. My goodness, he's a tall fellow. That said, he leant over the barrier and reduced his cross-section considerably, for which I'm thankful.

The relatively few pictures I managed / bothered to take from that vantage point will be posted anon. I wasn't terribly motivated to take many because (a) there was no chance to move around and change angle and (b) MikeEvs and others were in the mini-pit in front and will have done much, much better (it pains me greatly to admit  ;) ).

I will write more later: a good night out, albeit (for reasons I'll elaborate on later), not the greatest Frost* gig of my life, all things considered. (To be clear, the band played very, very well and the place was bouncing during the oldies-but-goodies, but there were other factors at work).

Oh well, just one picture of our little Green Goblin at work:

It was a cracker but yes..I agree..not as intimate as the best Frost gigs - but I guess as the reputation grows they're going to outgrow the nice little venues.  I hear the queue was hideous - I was near the front (having got there an hour early) but one of my lot was late and there was apparently still a queue when he got to The Scala at about 7:25 (he's an actor so put on a sob story about how his son was already inside and he had to check on him - sorry if he ended up pushing in front of any of you  :? ).

We were right up the front - centre (Sorry MikeEvs - I think I kept putting my mates coat on your head!!) and got JM's guitar full face all the way through hence the vocals and keys were a little quiet (and why my ears are still ringing).
Blunders and Nath were on stonking form.  High point I think was the Survivors section of MT.  There's not much that can force me to look away from Jem flying over the keys but last night I found myself staring open mouthed at Craig most of the gig.

The Brummie speak and spell dual was b.r.i.l.l. and the whole crowd chanting"ARSE" on demand was a classic Frost moment (what was the 4th word - Frost, Arse, Trumpet, ...?).  Really hope both that and the intro will find their way onto the Toys section of the forum at some point.

I'd never seen IB live before despite being a fan since Once Around The World days and thought they were great (although it must've been tough for Bob and John to follow Craig and Jem - Christ...would you want to go onstage and follow those two?!?!?).  It was good to see JM fly though as I feel he doesn't really get to shine in a lot of the Frost stuff.

Sadly had to rush off at the end so didn't get to see anyone (managed a very brief hi to LFE as he passed me in the queue) although spotted a few Forum Tees (and obviously Pedders leading the queue).

BTW - does anyone know what was being used to mic up JM's 4x12 and Nathan's TC Electronic?  Looked like odd blue baffles around the gtr mics and a big red thing on the bass.  Not seen them before and neither had my sound engineer buddy.

Finally awake enough to post.

That was a seriously top night out! This time I could actually see the bands, and sound was pretty good for being so close to the stage on one side. Wearing plugs also help a lot, I'm very careful with my mixing ears. 8-)

But most importantly, both bands sounded great! It's so rare to see people having so much fun on stage while playing so intense and clever music. Truth be told, I don't even like going to gigs, especially prog gigs where everyone are just lost in their own world focusing on technical things. So worried about avoiding mistakes. Screw that, I'd rather have a few bum notes and a big smile on my face. Not that I really noticed any of that, I was too busy having fun. :D

This was my first experience with It Bites live, and holy banana potato salad, what a great band! Not only did they play almost all the songs I wanted, they played them great.

Also, it was REALLY nice to meet you all again. I'm sorry I didn't say hello to everyone, and I just took off right after they finished. I have been gigging myself, and had like 3-4 hours sleep since Friday, I have never felt so terrible. Nearly had to go during the gig, but it was SO worth the pain. For some reason had a total emotional breakdown when I got back to my room, so I guess this could have gone bad if I didn't just get some emergency sleep. Brain got a bit overloaded.

But anyway, this was one of the most fun gigs I have ever been to. I'll keep flying over, can't miss a band like this. :)

My thoughts are as follows:

Brilliant as ever!

It Bites were great, very tight sounding etc. I enjoyed hearing songs from the tall ships and map of the past as they are the only ones I am familiar with.

Frost* were on top form. Plenty of japery as expected. I would have happily have seen Milliontown replaced by either TDL or a couple more tracks from EIMA but I know a lot of people prefer to hear Milliontown :)

The 2 new tracks sounded ace. 100% frost* songs, looking forward to hearing them again!

Overall, a great night. It was great to finally meet Fitzy, I saw a lot of other faces but by the time it was time to leave the venue everyone had moved so sorry I didn't get chance to say hello! I'll try again next time!

Arrived at the venue for 7.00pm,wasnt expecting that queue, finally got in 7.25,stood at bar- 6 deep, then heard intro"Our name is Frost etc",so raced upstairs couldnt get moved, finally finding a space right at back behind mixing desk.thought Jem,s keys and vocal could,ve been a bit louder at times, still enjoyed gig though, couple of new tunes as well. When It Bites came on,who I also love, moved down onto floor level, sound was a lot better-great set,Had great night 2 of my fave bands, just thought there was too many people for that venue & slow Queueing

That was one surreal gig experience for me. In a good way, I must add! I lingered maybe a bit too long at the pub and ended up in the queue outside the Travelodge next door. I didn't know what to expect, but bloody hell, I didn't expect it to be that popular! Anyway, I managed to shuffle into the main room itself as the intro was playing and ended up down on the floor by the left stairs. The crowd was mental - properly rammed. I was a bit concerned that quite a few people chose to stand right across the stairways - a good vantage point yes, but not so good for a quick escape in case of emergency. But anyway, it was just about sold out - that would indicate a big, packed in crowd, no?  ;)  I was absolutely exhausted, so halfway through BLM I thought I better get out for a breather... and ended up being pointed into the VIP area by a member of staff, which is where I stayed for the rest of the gig. The sound was pumped in through speakers direct from the mixing desk, so it was crystal clear, if lacking that gig atmosphere (and being pounded into submission by Blunders' drums  ;) ). It was surreal being seperated and yet part of the gig. Bizarre. But I got to hang out with Matt Stevens, Lord Twang himself (briefly) and Kavus from Knifeworld, so I can't complain.  8-)

The first thing that I noted was just how damn good Jem's voice sounded. That man's been looking after himself! Especially on the new tracks, which both sounded immense, of course. I particularly liked Heartstrings, it had a good riff thang goin'. The Speak & Spell section was... yeah. Typical.   While I was down there, the sound was pretty good. It wasn't the most balanced mix, but the volume was a surprise - very comfortable. Quite rare now, I think. Milliontown was great, but I don't think I'll miss it live. It is really rather long, after all. Nice for one last spin, though.  :)

It Bites - well, they're It Bites, aren't they? Solid. And they played the last two tracks I've been wanting to see / hear live for some time now, so I was very happy.  :)

The social aspect has become the highlight of these gigs for me, so it was excellent to hang out with so many wondreful people and see so many familiar faces, as well as find a few new ones. Cheers, all! There's never enough time, though, is there? And sorry to those I missed (Mr. Worrell, where the hell were you?), but with a crowd that size, I'm lucky I found the few I did.  :)

Massive thanks to Fogeyspasm whose gig going stamina is beyond heroic. Thank you again for the lift, mate.  :D

Well, well...

That was quite a night, wasn't it?  Spent an hour or so in the urbane company of Pedro & clan at the front of the queue then got front-centre at the barrier right in front of Jem.  Sorry to anyone behind me who couldn't see past me but I don't get out that often and was determined to get as much out of this as I could!

Stonking set, ace new choonery, plenty of laughs (intended or not - see above) and a lovely feeling of belonging to the whole thing.

Great to meet so many of you at last, something I was really hoping would work out.  Sorry that Security saw fit to relieve me of the custard creams I'd brought along to dish out ("no food, mate!") but I did get them back afterwards and thought of you all as I ate them once I got home *burp*

Happy Christmas one and all :)

Although I didn't mingle with the Frosties I had a great time last night. I just haven't gotten to know you all properly here. I was a bit worried by the long queue when I got there at 7, but got in in time.

I thought the sound was pretty good, with a few issues with the mix. Not too loud, although I found my ears were ringing on the way home. Maybe I should have brought my earplugs. I noticed they were being sold on the merch stall.

Frost* were excellent. This is my first time seeing either band, but I had some idea of what to expect from the various videos I've seen. I always like to see a band enjoying themselves.

I remember It Bites from their early days and knew a fair few of the songs. I think John does a pretty good job of emulating the original vocals. He and Nathan worked hard, but everyone was on top form.

I also wondered about the mics used on the bass cab. Looked odd.

Oh, and sorry to miss meeting Matt Stevens again. I thought he would probably be there.

This is my best approximation of the new walk-on:

our name is Frost*
how do you do
we're here today
to play for you
we've come all this way
on the M25
and it took us all day
'cause the traffic was shite
[...]John and Nathan will have a long night
'cuase they're playing as well later on with It Bites
but first they're with Frost*

To play old songs [Frost* songs]
That is what we will do [that is what we will do]
but best of all
we've got some new ones too
we're full of excitement
we're full of Christmas cheer
'cause later on
we'll be getting stuck into the beer
the boys are ready
they're ready to sing [ting-a-ling]
we've even put a comedy hat
on Nathan King
so ladies and gents
its finally time
to welcome on stage in an orderly line
John, Jem, Nathan [cheering...]

From our perspective, we totally underestimated how getting into the venue would be and found ourselves quite some way back in the queue and subsequently not in the best of vantage points when we got in. However from what we could see it was a cracking show I thought both bands played really well. I felt some sympathy for JM who was battling a throat ailment but he was a real trooper and kept it going, it always makes things so much harder work singing when you're a little under the weather like that so respect due.
Great sound I thought, good clarity but not too loud.
Just a shame about the view... bloody low stages!
I think we only managed a few hello's this time, but to those we did meet, good to see ya and to those we missed we'll try harder next time round, although unfortunately we're gonna miss Celebrate2 as we'll be in the US chasing tornadoes.

Particularly Pedro who I could see stood there for the entirety of frost's set, camera in hand shortly before you disappeared into the ether just like everyone else I recognised.

I tend to not record much or take many photos as I prefer to try and take in as much of the real thing as possible so I'm very grateful to all you lovely gig recordery/photography people.

Well, what can I say? After waiting so long to see them, pretty much 5 years by my calculations, I was not dissapointed :) An excellent excellent evening all round. Managed to get relatively close to the front, and wasn't too fussed with the extraordinarily tall people stood at the front, I wasn't photographing or videoing it, so grateful hugely for those that did. I did infact see a certain Ester Segarra (gig photographer) entering the venue and then saw her taking photos in the photo pit (now I know she normally photographs for the likes of Terrorizer and Metal Hammer magazines, but I can only assume she was taking photos for Classic Rock Prog, with it being the same publisher as Metal Hammer, as I can't really see it being page-fodder for the afore mentioned mags), so will be keeping an eye out in future issues. I didn't meet anyone from here, but managed to drag two non-Frost*-familiars with me who thankfully also thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the Brummie speak & spell, pure genius, & have watch the YouTube too many times to mention today, and I think I shall cherish my first live experience of Hyperventilate & BLM for the rest of my days :) The venue, I thought, was beautiful, and had hilarious fun trying to find the upper floors & ended up in the glassed off area for It Bites. The bar situation was crazy, and the bar prices typically London, but only minor gripes, and didn't mar the evening one bit. So, bring on the next gig, that's all I can say!

Thanks for sharing that...and so glad you enjoyed it.
Glad the videos are going down well too.

I do have a few more clips that can go up sometime but I have other stuff to deal with at the moment so they'll have to wait.

As one of the tall people, even though I was something like 8th through the doors and had the pick of the rail, I did my usual trick of staying away from the middle but also not giving up the hard-queued-for right to a "good spot", particularly for the family members who have come to share the gig experience with me but don't have the height to see from anywhere else.
Capturing some of what goes on seems a good way of "offsetting" the fact that I inescapably block the view of some of those who choose to (or settle for having to) stand behind me...that and cultivating a knee-wrecking stoop/crouch that someone of my build finds hard to maintain for extended periods.
But enough of that wibble... :)

I would fully support a motion to declare everyone over 6 foot a "VIP" and let them sit and watch on comfy chairs in air-conditioned, double glazed, muso-accompanied, private-bar serviced, perfect-mix-from-the-sound-desk comfort.  :D

Ah, but I feel badly for those people as they've missed out in some fashion, haven't they?

As an American without an international gig budget, I am very, very grateful to everyone who filmed the show and have shared what I already knew would be a gig for the ages. Shame it was a little short on the Frost* end of the bill. I know EIMA's tough to manage without Dec, but I would not have minded Wonderland (or TDL, for that matter). Regardless, it seemed like a fantastic show and I hope to catch them again one day.

Here's a review from me that seems to deal with the incidentals as much the music, but nevertheless I had a spiffing time!

Arrived in London at about 18:10 and felt quite thrilled walking around in my normal winter attire of michelin-man puffa jacket and Frost* hat as for once I was likely to be outed as a prog fan by the Frost*erisk (not likely on my normal commute to work). So I kept my eyes peeled for any nods of recognition as I trundled through St Pancras and King's Cross.  I saw none, so whether I was noticed amidst the parade of shops and sweeping ceilings I know not, but I got to the Scala at about 18:25 and the queue didn't look too bad.  Txtd my mate Lozza to say I might nip off for a coffee but decided not to, and rightly so as it rapidly got *really* long and some sort of barrier things were put in place.

Lozza was in fact running late and I was getting worried as to what to do if we started getting into the venue before he arrived, as I had the tickets, but he turned up just in time and the nice lady behind me did not mind him joining me in the queue. Then, classically, the pair of us waited for 15 minutes in the foyer whilst he ate his sandwich... :S

Anyway, we eventually got in and took a place on the RH balcony, which gave an ace view over the crowd, though the Blunderdrums were quite dimly lit.  I was seriously surprised at how full it got though. Once the band came on every spot around and in front of us seemed occupied in the end and there were a few incidents of wincidence when people tried to move around our bit of the venue - not only uncomfortable squeezing but there were a few consternated folk who either didn't wanna move or knew you couldn't move or something. I was glad of my nice view at this point and pondered for a micro second on a night when The Big Machine might be played of the time that our own band, Small Machine, played the Scala and we didn't have that packed crowd problem :) (http://youtu.be/-cm4V1AW_QM (http://youtu.be/-cm4V1AW_QM) if yer interested...)

So, to the music - it was just great to see Frost* full stop; the readings on the exciteograph had gone off the scale and it was a great choice to kick off the gig with a new track - Heartstrings.  I look forward to hearing that in its final form - it sounded like the best of each player crafted into a great showcase track.  Elsewhere throughout the whole set I was particularly taken by Nathan King's immense bass tone; I couldn't appreciate it so well last year at the Peel but this time it was the real foundation of the sound.  Blunders punctuated each song with his enthusiasm and verve, and Jem seemed to be having a whale of a time, though the keys were hard to pick out at times from our sonic vantage point.  There was a great vocal blend going on too. I have to say I was somewhat worried by John Mitchell though - no problem with his playing or singing, but he seemed really subdued and almost worried looking at times; I put a lot of that down perhaps to having to play both sets and be the focal point for the whole night, and later when he explained at the start of the It Bites set that their touring had shot their voices to bits I could see why he might have looked worried before his frontman role in the IB set.

Nevertheless the Frost* set was ace, and with Hyperventilate, another new song, BLM, Dear Dead Days and the whole of Milliontown it was going to be very groovy indeed - how could it not be groovy?! The silly stuff was silly, and seeing JG dancing to "Blunders Style" was truly odd. I loved the batch of the audience who were singing along to the melodies in the instrumental sections and it was good to know there was a lot of love out there in that big old audience for the band.  "I saw Frost* live and they did Milliontown" - just reading that makes perfect sense of a great evening, and the band carried off a bloody complicated song with ease.

Lozza and I had a quick review of proceedings in the break and then it was on for IB.  John Mitchell had perked up considerably and was taking no prisoners with the crowd; he wanted to know we were out there and I hope we got the message across.  The audience had thinned out slightly after Frost* from my perspective, but though I'd not seen IB before I was struck by how much love there was in the crowd - this band had got a lot of fans in the audience and you didn't have to look far to see someone singing along in a way that suggested this was an important moment for them.  To be honest, I've not experienced this in many gigs outside the prog genre.  Somehow with this music, these fans and these crowds you get a special sense of special music.  It may not be top of the charts to the wider world but it's clearly top of the hearts, and when you are in a crowd amongst real fans there's always the chance of a litte musical epiphany where the next time you hear the records they all sound just that bit better for having shared the songs in a crowd.

At one point JM asked whilst tuning who had the new LP (LOUD CHEERS!) and who thought it was shit (did he say that? I think he did)? SILENCE. I'm grateful to Pedro, DS and Duey for their suggestions for preparing for the gig; it was ace to hear them rip through Ghosts and Plastic Dreamer, and when they did Meadow and The Stream and The Wind That Shakes The Barley I was blown away - live, the band injected the songs with a great deal of passion and verve.  The Big Machine was epic, Cartoon Graveyard was knockout, and, just as seeing Frost* and seeing Milliontown makes perfect sense, they went and finished off with Once Around The World.  I was taken back to seeing the band recording it on a Channel 4 show called Twang, Bang, Kerrang (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AveJxs_TmY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AveJxs_TmY)) and wondered if the young JM had seen it back then too - and now he was onstage doing it for real.  Throughout the set Nathan King did some sterling bass playing (including some complex runs as well as solid foundation work) and vocals, and of course the two original "Biters" were there, with John Beck in his seated pose tickling various keyboards and the metronomic Bob Dalton nailing everything down from the back. I wonder now if all those backing vocals I'd attributed to John Beck weren't coming from Bob Dalton...

Part of me hoped the circumstances might have meant the encore would include Blunders and Jem joining It Bites for a proper Frost*Bites collaboration on one song, but I guess logistically that would have been a tall order. Nevertheless Kiss Like Judas caused a lot of happy bopping and rounded the night and my own year of gigs off nicely.

I agree - what an amazing night - me and my fellow Frostie Bites mates were delayed by the queue and missed the start of the ''support'' band - but, once we split up to find our own slots it all seemed to fall into place.  Yup, like others, some of us were stuck behind fans who were taller than our dimunitive shells but, for me, I blame my poor diet when younger.  Nonetheless, all I would request for future benefit - stand still please!  Having a good view of Jem's head is OK if it lasts!

If the new offerings on the night ''asre'' the way to go for Frost 3, then bring it on...!  Could be fun...!

As for the It Bites set - utterly fantastic.  All the 'hits and more' as they used to say.  Their next outing into recording land has got to be something special after the last two albums.

So, all that is left to say is ''Happy Christmas'' to one and all and, if I may hi-jack this part of the forum, my ''card'' to you all is my simple musical offering.

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/17885303/Almos ... istmas.MP3 (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/17885303/Almost%20Christmas.MP3)

It's been up here before a couple of years ago but it might be OK to let you all hear it again.  As Neil Innes once said, ''I have suffered for my music, now it's your turn'' - ha ha!!

Happy Crimbo

Quote from: "JimD"I was taken back to seeing the band recording it on a Channel 4 show called Twang, Bang, Kerrang (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AveJxs_TmY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AveJxs_TmY)) and wondered if the young JM had seen it back then too - and now he was onstage doing it for real.
Very likely!
The first time I saw IB-reincarnated was in Manchester soon after JM had joined 'em (they still had DIck Nolan on bass... in body if not in spirit!). He addressed the masses near the end of the show and said how he'd been a big fan of IB in his youth and had dreamed of being in Dunnery's shoes... and now here he was, doing just that. A genuine boyhood dream come true.
It was very, very touching.

Got a lot of respect for that fella, I have.

When videoing gigs I sometimes try to capture some of the audience reaction by turning the camera around.
Most times this results in 5-10 seconds of pitch black...but this time the lights were accommodating enough to light 5 frames of my slow pan.
I grabbed these and "stitched" them together to create a panorama.
You might be able to spot yourselves in this....(you may have to click on it to see the whole image

Eclipsed by which person? Can you describe?

Oh dear; I'm there, but the look on my face suggests either an ecstatic response to some ongoing on-stage Frost*ie widdling, or an unconscious desire to grab forty winks in mid-gig at the end of a tiring year ...  ;)

Ermmmmm

Well I'm in front of the guy with long hair and glasses that looks a bit like Steven Wilson. You can see the right shoulder of my sexy new tweed jacket and all of my hair and a tiny bit of my forehead. I'm eclipsed by the gentleman with very short receding (sorry) grey hair. Just left of centre of the photo. In line with the corner of the sound booth that is most prominent.

I did want to come over and say hi Pedders but everyone else was saying Hi and then the gig started and then you were GONE! Next time I will come to the pub first, lesson learned.

The rightmost of the two front-rowers in the "red zone" (i.e. the left-most picture in Pedro's sequence). Eyes closed, mouth open, catching flies. To the left (looking at the picture) is DrBlowThingsUp and immediately above his luscious locks, the bald pate may indeed be E.S.

Ooh - that's me at the front centre - the shorty in front of the tall bloke with the Santa hat. Queued for an hour before doors open, flying visit past the merch desk and then roots out down there all night.

We ended up in the empty space to the right of the mixing cage... still talking with Nellie when you took that shot!  Great view of everything left of centre! Spent half the time watching the cage guys  and their mates watch LEDs, then fly into action  when something unplugged itself! No set list on a scrap of paper...
 that's rare...

Sorry for the cross-posting: I'm not sure how many are watching the "Photography at Frost*Bites?" thread ...

I finally managed to find time to go through the rather small collection of pictures I took at Frost*Bites and pick out a select few for your delectation. I wasn't in the best of locations, photography-wise, and couldn't move to get a variety of shots. Plus, as Mike will confirm, the lighting was bogging awful in this regard. Plus, of course, he and others were down in the pit with their sacks o' kit, so better able to have a comprehensive go at it (which Mike certainly did very well at).

Nevertheless, there are a few of my pictures which I'm happy with and more than happy to share with you all:

Ah, that's the cunning plan, y'see. Inserting additional chins I do for free; removing excess ones I only do upon receipt of envelopes stuffed with large quantities of used bank notes ...  ;)

Some cool photos there TA.

Scouring Pedro's pic has reminded me that there was someone in a Panda outfit there, wasn't there?  Tell me I wasn't/am not still hallucinating!

Still no actual evidence of your alleged attendance, you could have nicked that photo from anyone.

It's looking like you will have to get a sworn affidavit from someone trustworthy who can prove they were there and who would confirm you story.

If you look closer you'll see that it's a bottle of sodding water.
I'd had 5 pints of excellent real ale at the pub, so didn't feel the need to spend a week's wages on any more ;)

Hi!

I hope everyone's holidays are good, and that the viruses going around haven't affected too many. I've been sick since I stepped off the plane in Philly (could be an omen?), and it seems like some sort of worldwide conspiracy is taking place.

Anyway.. It was great seeing everyone again! I spent so much time trying to catch up with everyone that the music almost got away from me. Almost.. Good singing, good playing, "Oh hey, there's (insert name here)!"

I'm sorry I didnt get to see everyone, but I had a great time at the Craft Beer pub and at the Scala .. I really missed you all very much, and I thank Richard Branson for running that airfare sale so I could attend.

'Til next time!

ps.. I'm drunk, and I love all you wonderful people   :D
