The new album - "The Incident"
Porcupine Tree are happy to announce the forthcoming release of their tenth studio album "The Incident". The record is set to be released via Roadrunner Records worldwide on 21st September, as a double CD.
The centre-piece is the title track, which takes up the whole of the first disc. The 55-minute work is described as "a slightly surreal song cycle about beginnings and endings and the sense that 'after this, things will never be the same again'."
The self-produced album is completed by four standalone compositions that developed out of band writing sessions last December - Flicker, Bonnie The Cat, Black Dahlia, and Remember Me Lover feature on a separate EP length disc to stress their independence from the song cycle.
Video footage of the band in the studio working on The Incident, as well as audio previews, will be available online soon. The band will tour extensively to promote the album from mid September onwards.
Woo-hoo! I'm seeing them on 9th October in London - it's shaping up to being a really good autumn, with IQ, It Bites and PT gigs to look forward to.
Excellent! I've been waiting for news on this.
Cool. Thanks for the info.
Can't f'ing wait!
Listening to some Porcupine Tree while typing this. It's been a while since I last tuned into one of their albums. Can't believe I was able to go such a long time without listening to it!
When I read the news on 'the incident' this morning, my day just couldn't go wrong anymore! :D
I'm really looking forward too!
At least it does give a few days before seeing them on the 9th Oct to get my head into it / round it....especially the 55 min "slightly surreal song cycle"
Cool 8-)
This sounds really great, can't wait and ditto for the gig! :D Cheers for the info.
I've only got 'In Absentia'; what other recommendations can you give me? :D
In Absentia's a great start! You'd probably also like:
Deadwing (good and heavy with some sublime moments)
Stupid Dream (which has Even Less on it, the slide guitar on the intro of which makes the whole album worthwhile)
Lightbulb Sun (for the title track and Russia on Ice)
Fear of a Blank Planet (which has some of the most awesome drumming ever on Anaesthetise)
Signify is a must...
Coma Divine is a brilliant live album
Voyage 34, Warsawa, ...
Basically, just get the whole back catalogue - there isn't a duff album among them.
I agree with Catherine...and probably start with the most recent ( as when you get to see them live, you'll be more familiar)
In Absentia, Fear Of A Blank Planet and Deadwing ....then branch out to the back cat....and also try going sideways and some of Steven Wilson's other projects ..like Blackfield (1, 2 or live), No-Man (Schoolyard Ghosts)
:D
"Arriving Somewhere" from Deadwing is my current fave track of all time. IMHO the whole album is magnificent and a 'must buy'!
Really looking forward to this new one! I'm still deciding whether or not I can afford to get to the Leeds gig in October, but I would do in a flash if I could.
I favour the more 'spacey' Porcupine Tree albums like The Sky Moves Sideways (Stars Die and Moonloop on the bonus disc are sublime) and Lightbulb Sun over the more recent heavier ones, but Catherine's right - there isn't a bad album in their entire back catalogue. Stupid Dream is an excellent one. My first buy was Warszawa, which was a great introduction to all sides of the band.

Echos my own thoughts.
I started with In Absentia and loved it. Deadwing came out shortly after and I also love that one. I really like Stupid Dream, FOABP, Nil Recurring and bits of Lightbulb Sun, but the earler stuff is a little too experimental/atmospheric for my personal taste. I have Signify, but rarely listen to it.
Steven Wilson's other projects are ok, but just don't grab me the same way as PT. Looking forward to it.
I started with The Sky Moves Sideways(US version) and then on to Signify
right afterward. I was instantly hooked from that point on. I was buying everything
except vinyl releases.
I agree about Deadwing. That one is my fav and and to be honest I wasn't as
taken by Fear of A Blank Planet when it came out, though I do like it more
in hindsight.
Thanks everyone. Cptn Canary is going shopping!!
Agreed. Shallow should have been YOOOOJ. Stupid radio.
Shallow is such a great little rock song. Definitely airfriendly.
Then again, there are so many prog bands who've made airfriendly songs. They never get the exposure they need.
Maybe it's for the better though. If prog were to go mainstream, it wouldn't really be prog anymore would it? There would be "sell-outs" around every corner, trying to abuse the genre and awesome musicianship, just to earn a few extra dollars.
Don't get me wrong, I love certain stuff that airs on the radio. Music for the "normal folks" I always say. :P There's some great work in there, but overall I'd rather listen to the more niche music.
Shallow = good. Nickelback = awful. Any band who come out with a song like Rock Star must be destroyed immediately. I hereby declare this my own opinion and I respect those who disagree with it and I won't argue with that. I still really hate Nickelback, though. :P
I always thought Lazarus would have been a great radio song. It's a beautiful song, that one.

High five!
Arghh Nickelback. >_<
I personally rather like Nickleback. I think Silver Side Up is a really good album, and I love the sarcasm and irony in Rock Star.
My brother-in-law calls them "Stickleback", just to wind up his two daughters.
if you'd paid two cents for their CD, you'd want a nickelback. /boomtish
I also have SSU, though I haven't listened to it in years. Aside from it being kinda cheesy, it had its moments. Haven't felt inclined to buy any of their stuff since.
"Never made it as a good band /
Wonder why I ever bought their CD /
When I'm tempted to buy again /
I hear their music and it damn near kills me /
This is how they remind me..."
sheeple.
Just seen a gig listed at Wolverhampton Civic for Sunday the 6th of December, this isn't on PT's website as yet. I wonder if this means more UK date later in the year after their tour in October :?:
I hope so - nothing in Scotland as yet... :?

Marillion's playing London that same weekend, I believe. Sadly, I'm unable to attend either as I do not live in that continent. I'm so jealous of those of you who are incontinent.

Chuffing cocking chuff, I have tickets for another gig that night in Glasgow, which were a birthday present so I can't really off load them. Arghhhh

Tickets for Glasgow now safely purchased :)
See you there! :D
The new album, The Incident, is now available for pre-order from play.com. :D
It's not at Burning Shed yet as apparently they want all the early sales to count towards its chart position.
I've ordered mine already, and apparently there's a free MP3 download for pre-orderers as well - but mine doesn't work. (There was an error with your code. Please try again. :( ) Anyone else had this?
You can hear a sample of the album on their MySpace page and there's a video of Steven Wilson talking about Time Flies (part of The Incident song cycle) on their part of the Roadrunner site. It all sounds very good. TF to me sounds like Dogs by Pink Floyd.
Sorry for the lack of links. I'm very lazy today. :)
The pre-order of the deluxe edition is now available here:
http://www.rhino.co.uk/rhino-store/prod (http://www.rhino.co.uk/rhino-store/prod) ... t_2764.htm
I'll be sticking to the £8.95 version available from play.com

Hopefully this linl works :?
Your link got cut off, but I figured it out, so here's the directly clickable link:

I'm liking Time Flies very much. If this is their "pop" song from this album, I can't wait to hear the heavy stuff.
Yup, Time Flies seems very good.
£60 for the deluxe edition... hmmm. That is basically just for the book, as long as the surround mix gets released separately at some point.
£60 does seem a bit steep, but I do love my box sets unashamedly. :) I wonder how limit it is. The Blank Planet ltd. ed. sold out and vanished before it was even released. If I wait until I have enough to pay for it, which would be around late September/early October and it disappears, I'll be pretty upset. :(
Wow. I mean...
WOW !!!!!!!!
I confidently predict album of the year
I obviously need to listen a bit more but on first listen the track on the cover disc of the latest issue of Classic Rock Presents PROG, a radio edit of Time Files, left me slightly underwhelmed.
Alongside Pendragon's Indigo and a new track from Darwin's Radio, I was left waiting for Time Flies to actually (ahem) take off.
I'll confess I am not a PT follower, Coma Divine is the only CD I have and I liked that. Perhaps the full track is more exciting?
I open to suggestions as to which album to listen to in order to catch the bug.
In Absentia, Stupid Dream, Lightbulb Sun...
In Absentia is essentia.
I rather like Deadwing, too.
Quote from: "gr8gonzo"In Absentia is essentia.
Indeed! And The Sky Movese Sideways too, imho! :)

Go see them live Pedro....then you may catch the bug
Arriving Somewhere But Not Here did it for me.
I really like Time Flies a lot. It forms part of The Incident's 50-or-so minute song cycle on the new album, so it'll be interesting to see how it fits in with all the other sounds going on in there.
As a fan of the more spacier PT rather than the more modern heavier PT, I'd vote The Sky Moves Sideways and Lightbulb Sun as my favourites.
Quote from: "Pedro"I open to suggestions as to which album to listen to in order to catch the bug.
Pedders, check out Signify, Stupid Dream and Fear of a Blank Planet for starters. IMHO this would represent a broad sweep of the, ahem, oeuvre.
Just need to say: this album is GOOD! Very good!
(it leaked, don't worry I pre-ordered already ^^')
Just got confirmation!! My deluxe edition is shipping YAAAAAY!
I should have it by the weekend. A friend showed up yesterday having grabbed the leak of it.
I opted not to listen at first wanting to save the experience but we gave it a whirl once over.
Fortunately I got busy working so it remained in the background and I didn't hear much else.
I'm listening to it now, damn my impatience just couldn't wait for pre-order to arrive much like yesterday with the new Megadeth album
Got my pre-order deluxe edition and it is absolutely astounding. Really nice packaging and IMHO impresses me more than the boxes Marillion have done(those are still wonderful though!)
The album is fantastic and I love it a lot more than Fear of a Blank Planet. The book is nice
but has a very disturbing sequence of pictures in it. Other than that it is wonderful and worth
every penny of the $130 USD w/shipping I paid for it.
I'm very much hoping my copy will be waiting for me when I get home tonight.
Can't wait to hear it.
check out the video of Way out of Here...awesome

Haha, Phila and I checked that live video out last night - I particularly enjoyed the frame where we could see her singing along on the front row.
She.... didn't so much. :D

Haha, good luck! There's a reason I used the word 'frame' there! ;)
Ooh, that's difficult.
Could it be at 5.52?
I'm going on half a face, hidden behind a guitar (in a forest) ;)
Loving it! I know Steven said that all the songs are separate, but tie into the main concept, but does anyone know what each individual song is about?
I don't know whether I like it.
Mind you, I do have form with this kind of stuff :-)
Going to London tomorrow and will give it a real, hard listening to.
I think I've decided.
It's not a PT album, it's a SW album with the other members of PT playing on it.
I don't feel that it bears much resemblence to previous PT work, but sounds more like a collision of Insurgentes with Schoolyard Ghosts.
Which isn't to say that I don't like it...
That's progressive Rock (not prog) for you.
I've heard it a few times and can't say I'm too fussed about it :( Personally, I prefer some of the previous albums.
Quote from: "Tricky"It's not a PT album, it's a SW album with the other members of PT playing on it.
Yup, exactly what I was thinking during our first listen.

Again, spot on in my opinion, it's OK, but nothing more for me. A real shame, I was really looking forward to this release. I feel, Blank Planet, Deadwing, Stupid Dream, In Absentia and Lightbulb Sun all surpass The Incident. :(
I happen to like this album a lot.
Especially "Time Flies", "I Drive The Hearse" and "Remember Me Lover".
However I do agree that some previous PT albums are better. For me, nothing surpasses the "Deadwing" album.
In an attempt to get this album we've decided to glue all the Incident tracks together in iTunes as one track. It'll be heard as one piece then, perhaps it'll grow. ;)
I've listened to it a few times, and it's growing on me... I think my reaction on first listen was more about my expectations of what it'd be than what it actually sounded like, but having gotten past that (and after all, isn't breaking your expectations part of what being progressive is about anyway?), then I can now appreciate it for what it is... and what it is is rather good. Not great maybe, but certainly well worth the purchase. It does really need to be listened to in one piece though... which may limit how much it gets played down the line, but I'm sure I'll return to it from time to time.

It's growing on me a whole lot. Disc 2 with the non-fitting songs are earworms. It's definitely not Deadwing standard, but then that would be asking a lot. Really looking forward to hearing it live. Bristol on 10th October. :D :D
Woke up this morning with I'm drawing the line ,I draw the line embedded in my brain, yip the album is starting to grow on me..
This album gets better with every listen :)
I like it. No, it's not their best work but songs like "Time Flies" are among my favorite PT tracks of all time.
Besides, it's impossible to come up with a "better then the last one" album every time. Especially after 15 years. So far "In Absentia" is my all time favorite PT album but that's just personal. Everyone has their own favorite. I for one find SW's "Insurgentes" solo album boring as you know what. But that's just me. A lot of folks seem to like it. I sold my copy last week. ;)
Quote from: "H3WMW"For me, nothing surpasses the "Deadwing" album.
Ditto :)
After a couple of listens I really like the "bonus" CD, The main event, I think, could do with an ocasionally repeating theme and a solo or two... or is that too old school? ;)
Still working on it.
Yes, for me CD 2 was an immediate hit. I'm still reserving judgement on CD 1. It's good, but not yet as outstanding as I've come to expect from Mr Wilson and crew.
Well... I've had a chance for this to sink in a bit now and I've got to say it's up there with the other albums. Certainly no drop off in quality - but quite different from FOABP, certainly not as heavy in my opinion. There are quite a few mellow bits which are nice but I think the more uptempo sections will be the highlights of the live show!
I haven't been this excited about a gig since... ooh, I don't know when! And of course, to be accompanying the number 1 PT fan to her 17th gig is something of an honour - I just hope I don't embarrass her in some way!
Another listen and it's growing, and I take it back, there are some recurring themes and some solos. I guess everyone has picked up on the likeness that Time Flies has to The Pink Floyds Dogs, including the line "and after a while"?

I've noticed a few Floyd moments. I can't say which bits and what they sound like, except "Ooh, that's a bit Floydy"
And not in a bad way either.
Edit: Time Flies = Dogs.
There seem to me to be a whole stack of Floyd references in 'Time Flies' - apart from the very obvious 'Dogs' / 'Sheep' ones, there's also:
- Nod to 'Shine on you Crazy Diamond' guitar riff, starting at 1:50 and elsewhere
- Low guitar riff, very like the opening of 'Time', starting at 5:02
- "Can you stop smoking your cigar?" lyric
Maybe there are more if you're a bigger Floyd nut than me....
A grower for sure....after a good few listens I have to say I do like it...just not as immediate for me as some earlier stuff...
I love it! I thought that
Blank Planet and
Deadwing were a bit uneven in terms of atmospherics and heaviness (especially the former), which put me off slightly at first.
The Incident seems to have reached a nice plateau where everything is nice and even and it sounds great. Mind you, I'm a massive fan of the cosmic, spacey sounding PT, so disregard my comments if you wish. :P
Time Flies is excellent, but since that's already been said, I'd like to give some praise to Bonnie The Cat. I love the Jazz-style of the whole thing, the eccentric darkness and I adore the image I get of a cat who can see the future (that's only because I don't know what the song's about, and I think I prefer it that way). 8-)
Flicker and
Black Dhalia are also really nice moments.
I assume everyone knows the story of the main track - how SW saw a sign that said "POLICE - INCIDENT" and was struck by how cold the expression was? I've been told that everything that happens in
The Incident before
Time Flies is an account (among other meanings) of everything that happened before he saw that sign. After
TF is what happened after that, which shines new light onto the whole concept. All in all, I think it's excellent stuff.
Quote from: "LivingForever"There seem to me to be a whole stack of Floyd references in 'Time Flies'... Maybe there are more if you're a bigger Floyd nut than me....
I'll report back. ;)
Listening to "Time Flies" this morning - during the chuggy acoustic guitar intro Miss Brom goes.. "That's the Dr Who" rhythm.
Well I never! :D
