Just thought I'd open a thread where the attendees post their reviews. In thoughts, I'm there.  8-)

Pah, Frost might have come off stage in 24 hours but the night will be FAR from over... and as for the Prog-weekend... don't expect any reviews from me till Monday night!  :D

I'll confirm it tomozza though ;)

Yeah, but the new keyboard player wasn't up to much. Still bald and stuff, but too american and too much of a tendency to just shredding without any emotion. Can't see him lasting.

The John Boyes hologram for the guitar solo will take some beating though.

I don't know, I thought the highlight of the evening was seeing JJJ crowdsurfing. Until Pedders got in the way. ;)  :D

And, I guess we have to ask, why were they all dressed as Huguenots?

Good question Tom, but that was only until the first costume change during Andy's drum solo, when his drum riser rose majestically a full 2ft into the heavens, spouting lasers, dry ice and fireworks, allowing the band to nip off stage and don a fetching combo of lycra and capes and high heels. :D

If I remember correctly... ;)

Mind you, after what Dec did to him, it's no wonder TBE wants to give up live performance with Frost*.

The special cover versions were the best though.

Cos of circumstances - I get to do the first serious review!

I really do not want to know what I missed.  :(

So anyway

decided to drink which meant leaving at 10.50    to get trains for connecting trains and they were just starting to do the encores

also must remember that my camera is not very good at audio when being used as a camcorder - and I am sure you all wanted to see The Lamb....

WW has a very nice new hair do btw.  Only Frost*ies I had a chance to meet that I hadn't met before were Living Forever and Catherine.  Pleasure.   :D   I do hope Catherine taunted Tom with her t-shirt

So anyway, IT WAS FAB!!  I must say that they sounded so much better than when they were supporting Spocks Beard and at Summers End.

But I am very tired and have to get up for kids and more importantly Tinyfish...

G'Night!

Just got back, was awesome. The live arrangements of the songs were wonderful, very solid and enjoyable, the most impressive re-arrangement being The Other Me. The highlights were Wonderland, Milliontown and The Other Me in my opinion, but I also thoroughly enjoyed the random musical and non-musical fooling around that made it really feel like a Christmas party instead of a gig (which was cool as it's also my birthday!).

I'm also thankful that I was with all the frosties who actually really got into it and had a dance :D You guys rock! (particularly LivingForever (that was you right?) and Philadelphia!)

On a final note, what was the deal with  everyone kissing Jem on the head? It was like he was the pope or something

More later, pics arn't too great as I only took the compact camera - But I did get the whole of the BLM solo, close up, on vid, so that will follow.  :D

Good night.

What a great night.......more of a party than a gig.
Thanks to Jem and the lads I also have a new Santa hat ( for those of you that couldn't make it, Jem threw dozens of Christmas hats out into the crowd).
I thought the musicianship was sublime although JM was struggling in the early part of the show with guitar feed-back problems.
Andy was exceptional on the drums and what a cracking voice Declan has.
John was a solid as ever on bass whilst Jem remains the keyboard master.
All in all a fabulous night and for me the first time I've actually managed to see the guys live so what a treat.
I took lots of pictures so will upload in due course and finally I was happy to give away my two spare tickets to a pair guys who were genuinely into the music.
Nice to meet you all, hope you have a great Christmas :D

I only have eight minutes left on this comp so my current review goes a little something like: "ahhhh..."

'Twas a wonderful gig in many different ways! I'll get into it more when I get home, which should be about 27 hours from now. I hope everyone else enjoyed it as much as I did.

RH just got here, so I'll be off for a walk (or getting lost) around Kingston. Might see some of you at The Peel later! (:-D

Great gig. I've rarely been to one that was such fun. Everyone, from band to audience just seem to really enjoy it. I got very pissed but the Chicken Mega Meal from across the road sorted that out :-)

Just got home to darkest Norfolk, having left KuT at about 7am. Then had blow-out on M25 - not of the food variety !!!

To all the fellow Frost*ies I met, wonderful to have seen you all at last, although the level of devotion most of you show to Frost and other bands we talked about puts me to shame. I was really impressed. Anyway, may it be the first of many.

Have a Happy Xmas

It was such a great gig!
johns guitar was a bit of a shame with the noises but still i dont think it stopped anyone from enjoying it any less than what they did!
Was a really great treat to se a band really have fun playing.
Too much professionalism in the bussiness these days... not nearly enough fun!
Big Thanks to the guys again for putting on such an enjoyable night  :)
The support act was pretty awesome too! very unexpected hahah! :D:D

When Jem went into "Fly on the Windshield" I had a vague hope that they'd carry on and do the whole Lamb.  Now that would have been something...

Could happily have enjoyed a few more encores to bring in WTN, DDD and FD, but then there'd be nothing left..

And echo the "well done" to the Frostie on guest vocals - if he hasn't got a band then he should find one.  Jem - Don't suppose there's a rehersal recording floating around is there?

I'm just surprised, no, make that ASTONISHED, that no-one's mentioned the oboe solo, the mistletoe and the 3-way kiss...   no wonder there was a minimum age for admittance. Paul, the friend I dragged along to see it, was a bit taken aback!

Absolutely brilliant gig - loved it all, and can't wait until 10 Jan now.

And lovely to see Sarah, WW, Sawtooth, LivingForever, Lerxst, Big Black Shed, Tomskerous, Brom and other forumites - it felt like one big happy family party.

Goergeous!! And so entertaining - the whole evening!!  Nearly missed it due to a cock up on age limit nonsense, but Twang sorted that out in the end.

Christmas intros (last heard 'I Believe In Father Christmas' when GL himself performed it on his last tour of GB - seems ages ago!)   And then there was the band to audience interaction - only at at a Frost gig!!  Blooming marvellous!  BTW - who was that masked magician?

And, if you are listening - total 'top hats' off to the guest vocalist on 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas' - that man deserves a star with a couple of knobs on it!  Pressured into into it by JM (as the sax player let him down) and, possibly / reluctantly, press ganged into doing the biz.  You are a star and the band know it!! It just topped a night of pure excellence and downright fun.

Thank you to one and all for such a great night - kiss, kiss, kiss (if you know what I mean!!) - my mistletoe has yet to arrive, but I live in hope.

Yeah, and Jem's Santa hat - pigtails and A MASK - I'm in love!!!!

Indeed it was a fabulous evening  :D

One of my top gigs (if not the top) of 2008  :D

Don't know where to begin to describe how amazing it all was. The two things that struck me the most was how great it is to see musicians so obviously enjoying themselves. Secondly just what an absolutely fantastic keyboard player Jem is (1st prize to me for stating the b******g obvious   )

Sorry Frosties I wasn't feeling very sociable last night. I'd had ear ache all day. The gig managed to clear that up as well

Thanx for the santa hat  :D

Does anyone have any good shots of the crowd?  It was jam packed (sorry to everyone I barged past to get to the front) and then when later I went and watched it on the screen in the other bar, it really did look amazing with all the santa hats.

Truly the best atmosphere at a gig I've been to for years - that bit when we were all humming along, wonderful.

right my lovelies, and what a lot of lovelies you were.

what a blast eh?  I've not had as much fun (or suffered so much tinnitus!) in many moons, despite being sober as a judge.

Firstly ... thanks to Tom for the lift. you are a pearl amongst men and i love you dearly.
Secondly ... Stuart and Robin .. 4 of We5. I cant believe its the first time we have all got together in the flesh. Lets do it again sometime soon.
Thirdly ... Twang - thanks for giving me somewhere to put my coat. I couldnt have circulated so well, or bounced nearly as high, with it on.
Fourthly ... the man (dave?) who begrudgingly let me in front of him to the front to take photos. You are such a sweetheart and i hope i didnt ruin your view too much.
Fifthly ... the band. oh the music. my dears, i simply  havent the words. Long Live Frost*.
Sixththly ... Philly and Hippo for the cooling fan and the hugs and not minding the headbanging.
Sevenethelly ... LNR for making me feel good about knowing which knobs to turn.
Seventhellly and a half ... Mr LNR for taking the time to insist we make up, though i could have done without the mistletoe thing.
Eighththely  ... Lerxst and Vit P for saying nice things about my photos and making me feel about 10 ft tall.
Ninetheyly ... John and Mark and Martin for walking me back, feeding me and making me laugh lots.  It's good to laugh. oh and lets not do the piggyback thing again ok? !
Tenthly ... it was so lovely to meet all of you wonderful folk, whos names i have sadly forgotten on account of having the memory of a goldfish.

in conclusion ... photos, as and when i get the time to post them ... on the usual site. address below.

kisses

Fabulous gig, Andy and JJJ were on fire, felt for the Lord of Rock ... he was experiencing Nigel Tuffnel moments (think US airbase), Dec sung his heart out (and ending up losing his voice) Jem looked very happy with his new Frostiverse Gig Rig... very bling !
It was more or a party than a gig, as ever the boys were very generous with their time after the gig.
Special mention goes out to Cosmic Lawnmower ... a surprise vocal at the end, and a bloody fine taxi driver .. thanks !

It was just bleedin' marvellous, from the first moment to the last.

Nicky, likewise. Thank you for your hotel-based generosity, and I can think of few more perfect travel buddies.  Shame the traffic jams never live up to the company. x
We5 - a joy to get us all together in one place at last. Robin, thanks so much for bringing Musar, and to temporary additions Mark/Martin for leaving behind the one can of Kroney that rounded off my evening so perfectly.
To Jem, for your attempts to buy everyone in the world their pizza when you'd already provided us with santa hats.
Twang for putting the thing together in the first place
The band for just making me smile so bloody much and reminding me why music is just the best thing ever. (JM - we all had a great time, a few guitar noises pale compare to Jem's semi-regular 'oh shit  I've forgotten how the song goes' moments)
To Frosties both old and new - what a lovely bunch you all are
To my wife for letting me stay out and play
And, of course, to Asia for giving me one thing in my life to despise and provide balance in everything else.

Have a lovely Christmas everyone.

Not sure I've been to a gig before where there was so much love in the room - both between the band   and the audience

I've been to far too many gigs where you get the feeling the band can't stand each other any more or probably never liked each other in the first place

I still have a warm glow  :P

Well I thought they were bloody amazing!
It's a rarity to go to a gig where you can see the band having quite so much fun!
I laughed a lot :)

Let's face it, you can't beat a gig where the:

1: Bassist wears a ridiculous wig
2: There's lot of comments along the line of "Shit how does it go again?" by the amazing Mr. Godfrey
3: There is a pause in the quiet sections MID-LYRIC to have a swig of your beer
4: The band drink booze on stage
5: There are xmas hats involved
6: There are hilarious xmas covers with the announcement "Oh F*** it it's xmas!"
7: A random member of the audience gets up to sing an entire song, and does a good job of it too!
8: The support is a comedy routine

I could go on and on and on...Simply one of the best, most entertaining gigs i've ever been to :)

First of all, thanks for an absolutely cracking gig - it's a long time since I've had so much fun and been part of such a good natured crowd.

A couple of comments and observations that made me chuckle; I was there with my (long suffering) fiancĂ©e and brother, neither of whom are familiar with the prog genre.  In fact while I piled into the crowd they sat behind and watched the gig on the TV in the bar round the corner.  I was a bit worried about them, so near the end of the first encore I came out to see how they were getting on, to find them both nodding their heads and tapping their feet - a good sign.

My brother (who is a rock/jazz drummer, for want of a better description), said "A lot of it was exhilarating, but some parts I hadn't got a clue what was going on - I was counting beats of 7 at one point".  Welcome to prog.  He also said the drummer had inspired him to try out some new stuff himself - hoorah, a convert!

In the meantime, I heard the opening bars of "The Lamb" start up, so made my excuses and dived back in.  The crowd reaction to The Lamb was amusing, to say the least.  On the one hand there were the old timers like me bellowing every word at the top of our lungs, and on the other there were the younger members of the audience saying things like "What the heck is this? Is it a new song?"  My brother's reaction was "I thought they'd wandered off into a Broadway musical by accident"!

Anyway, damn good night, and great job all round.  Gutted I didn't get a hat though.  :D

Silly me! of course there were biscuits there! my question should have been
"how were the biscuits?" Nothing goes better with a Frost gig,Christmas or
or a Frost*mas gig.

Wow I wished I'd had some plane tickets it would have been worth flying
over there for the party!

Brilliant brilliant brilliant. And the music was only the half of it. Indeed, in the interests of strictest historical record-keeping, I'd say that, overall, the band played slightly better at Summer's End, at least until Milliontown came up on Saturday, when everything clicked up another sublime notch.

But don't get me wrong; it was a fantastic gig/party, The Peel heaving with true, turned-up-to-11 Frosties all having a blast. So much so, the ceiling air-conditioning unit near the back gave up the ghost and started raining on all of us standing back there by the little alcove

Others have described many of the very humorous moments, but did anyone else hear Jem inject, sotto voce, "These are not the droids you're looking for" in mid-song towards the end? Was it Milliontown or The Other Me?

And no-one's mentioned the little "Experiments in XMas Appeal" badges that JJJ and others were giving out freely ... Perhaps it could have been "Experiments in XMas atPeel"  ;)

Toys was a standout too, but it's a good job my 9-year old wasn't there (cue floods of tears when I told her I was only able to get tickets for me and her mum [thanks, Twang; greatly appreciated]), since there was no DDD, her favourite song in the world  :D

Good to see so many familiar (from this forum) faces there; I'll be sure and introduce myself in 2009. In the meantime, best wishes to all and huge kudos to Jem, JM, JJJ, TBE (or is it TDE now?), and Dec (who my wife said sang superbly, even if he looked out a bit out of place with his David Hasselhoff hair-do ... but then she is German  :D )

Okay, here's the definitive blow-by-blow account of the weekend, well if you're me... YMMV.  :D

So, arriving at the Tolworth Tower office block (sorry, Travelodge. I mean, come on, at least pretend it's not just an office block you stuck some ensuite bathrooms in!), I was greeted by Sawtooth, KeithD and MikeEVS (and briefly also the Pedro clan!) and we were just about to get into a taxi when Racing Hippo demonstrated the wisdom of his pseudonym by performing an astounding 100m hurdles race across the car park, sadly failing to join us in time.

A 'we must be nearly there by now' taxi ride with Mike stuck in the kiddie seat in the boot ensued, and we were soon joined in the Fighting Cocks by the aforementioned water-horse man, Philadelphia, Big Black Shed, Gig Buddy, Bert, and Mikey brandishing bags full of Tunnocks' goodies and rogue Jaffa Cakes.

Things start to become a bit hazy here, so here are some photos which demonstrate that perfectly:

Gig Buddy, Big Black Shed and Bert

Philadelphia, Mikey, RacingHippo and Sawtooth

A "short" walk to the Peel later and the excitement was mounting... here's the nutters down the front gang: L-R - MikeEVS, Philly, Hippo, Mikey, and of course the number one fan.

The warm-up guy wasn't exactly what anyone was expecting, but then what do you expect with Frost*?   :D  Certainly fitted the light hearted mood of the night even when he banged a 4 inch nail up his nostril! And the entire thing was worth it just for RacingHippo's opportunity to get up on stage.

Not sure why he was checking out the guy's arse though.  ;)

Eventually came the moment we were all waiting for, the strains of 'I Believe in Father Christmas' led into 'Black Light Machine' and we were off... Right from the start there was definitely a party vibe going on, there were a few sound problems but nobody seemed to care apart from Mr Perfectionist Mitchell.  :D  If I'm honest BLM wasn't what I expected to be up first, it almost seemed premature but you can't argue with song or performance...

A couple of tracks in and the party vibe really kicked off with an entertaining cover of 2pac's 'California' which the rest of the band played while Jem and Dec handed out Santa hats - I especially liked the ones which came with pigtails and definitely added a certain something to the headbanging.

The evening seemed to go ridiculously quickly, and it wasn't long before Jem was announcing the last song, luckily it was Milliontown so there was plenty of opportunity for more fun including a three-way oboe solo followed by lashings of 'Man Love', and then a hilarious mid-lyric break for a swig of white wine, not something you often see at any gig! Wonder what the hobbits made of it all?

First encore was the aforementioned Genesis cover, which went down a treat (well, with me anyway) but seemed to ruin Dec's voice - step up Cosmic Lawnmower for the second encore - surely the only person in the house who knew all the words to "I Wish it could be Christmas Everyday"??

All credit to CL for stepping up, and it's testament to your performance that I overheard people after assuming you were a friend of the band who'd been invited up!

All in all an excellent gig in terms of atmosphere, my only criticism was that the sound where we were standing was not brilliant (all turned into a bit of a mush) but to be honest that's my fault for standing at the front... I also would have loved to hear some of the other EIMA tracks live but I know rehearsal time was limited and I'm looking forward to the Magenta gigs for that very reason!

So the gig was over, there was much milling around, the band all came out to chat, I only saw Dec and JJ myself, I was too busy marvelling at the revelation of exactly what it is that keeps Jem going throughout the gigs:

The post-gig highlight was surely Jem's opening of RacingHippo's Xmas present - a self-doctored left handed stylophone with which he attempted to play some of Milliontown. Nice one RH!

I'm sure BBS won't mind me relating the other post-gig moment of choice - he was pointed out to JM as someone who could not possibly be wearing any more Frost* merchandise, to which JM replied "Well, you could have me hanging out of your arse..."

What followed will surely go down in history in Frost*ie legend as, led by one-man curry monster KeithD, 9 of us trekked off in search of the aforementioned spicy dish only to find every such emporium in the vicinity was shut. So we bypassed several pizza, kebab and chicken places resulting in an hour-long quest through the very heart of Kingston, accosting drunk revellers, kebab shop owners, and yes, even policemen on our quest for a Lamb Biryani. I don't think I will ever be able to eat Indian again without hearing a despondent Welshman: "What kind of town doesn't have a flipping curry house?" or "I could murder a curry, me..."

The journey ended for some at the mythical land of Subway although the more hardy of us ventured even further and found quite literally the nicest kebabs ever created by a human being. Mind you, they could have been made of tripe and no-one would have cared by that point.

And then it was all over for the night, barring the taxi ride back which broke every by-law ever invented, including as it did 9 people in a Ford Galaxy. I don't think I'll ever forget RacingHippo's face crushed against the window as we pulled away.

Top night. And that was just the first day.

Well what a blast! Never expected to be doing that, all of a sudden I'm onstage singing with Frost* I look across right and there's JM and Jem, to my left and there's JJJ and TBE... whoa!

And just to confirm, no I wasn't a plant! A few people asked me that the next day  :) A man of considerable girth yes, a plant no.
I sing/play in a covers band and at this time of year we dig IWICBCE out to be seasonal, I'd actually only sung it at an Isle of Wight pub gig the night before, so it was still fairly fresh in the ol' memory cell.

It was just coincidence that Dec's voice was giving him some jip and that I happened to know the song, when JM said "get up here", I thought sod it I will!... in the words of Harry Hill "what are the chances of that happening?"

Anyway thanks to everyone that kindly said it sounded alright, I hope it did, I was a little nervous, but I totally enjoyed it! (//http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/cool11.gif) (//http://www.freesmileys.org)

I'll have to try and blag a boot off of someone for posterity, if anyones got one   :)

Oh and... er... did I pass the audition?  ;)  :)

Fantastic weekend :D I'm absolutely knackered, legs and feet ache (lots of standing and even more walking). Brilliant to meet everyone again and it will live long in the memory.

Frost* were superb. although I'd have been better off not being so close to the front as the sound was better at the back.

Also enjoyed Tinyfish and bought their CDs, as well as Steve Thorne. First time for me to see It Bites too, but won't be the last either.

Only one downside...a distinct lack of Curry ;)

Neo
Tinyfish
Touchstone
Neptune's Sofa (blatant plug  :o )
Re-Genesis
Big Big Train

Thanks everyone for a brilliant weekend.  Such a long day, due to TBE's illness we ended up getting together in Reading before the gig, as well as sorting all the logistics out, but what a blast.  One of the best gig's I've ever been at, let alone played in.  Brilliant to hear everyone singing even the instrumental sections back at us!

The chap before we went on was Alan Rudge.  Back when the gig was booked ,Jem said we've got to have a magician to support - it is Christmas after all - and I think Alan did a great job.  Not sure I'd have liked to face a room full of Frosties all high on biscuits and beer...

Merry Christmas everyone!

A quick note from an occasional lurker and first time poster here to say how much I enjoyed this gig.  In fact the whole weekend at The Peel was excellent.

The band seemed to be on great form and enjoying things themselves as much as the audience were.  Nice to see a Rickenbacker appearance too - 'weapon of prog' indeed.

I don't think I've ever seen The Peel quite so busy.  Good to see some familiar faces, including some people I hadn't spoken to for a long time.

Well, what can I say that hasn't already been said, what a fantastic night that was!  It's so nice to see a band who really gel with each other on and off stage and who come out to meet us all afterwards - it's what makes the prog community so special and gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside  :D

I thought the band were absolutely cracking - I sympathised with JM's squeaks earlier on, very frustrating, however, that didn't spoil any of the set - I realised how great it is to hear Frost* songs live and loud - they really work live - after seeing Jem's Frost* Report on what was involved in setting up the keyboards with all the different samples, patches and sounds a big doth of the Frostie Christmas hat to JG.

It was great to watch one of Andy's last live performances from where we were too - he is a phenomenal drummer and bloody nice bloke.

It also made me smile seeing JM mouth to DB "I love you" mid song - there was indeed, a lot of man love in the building

Then of course, was the personal icing on the jem for me - seeing my beloved Lawny singing on stage with the guys!!  When the other guy didn't get up and a request went out for anyone else who could sing, it just came out: "He can!"  I shouted - I knew he'd love to sing it so I'm really pleased I did it!  Man, we hardly slept that night!

I know I've only really just started here on the forum but it was really nice to meet so many other Frost*ies - I love the way prog paths keep crossing out on the circuit  :)

That certainly was a weekend neither of us will ever forget....

Could this have anything to do with the cover of Genesis' Nursery Cryme?  :?

Indeed Sir....for those not familiar with the tale, here transcribed as follows...:

While Henry Hamilton-Smythe minor (8) was playing croquet with
Cynthia Jane De Blaise-William (9), sweet-smiling Cynthia raised her
mallet high and gracefully removed Henry's head. Two weeks later,
in Henry's nursery, she discovered his treasured musical box. Eagerly
she opened it and as "Old King Cole" began to play, a small spirit-
figure appeared. Henry had returned - but not for long, for as he
stood in the room his body began ageing rapidly, leaving a child's
mind inside. A lifetime's desires surged through him. Unfortunately
the attempt to persuade Cynthia Jane to fulfill his romantic desire
led his nurse to the nursery to investigate the noise. Instinctively
Nanny hurled the musical box at the bearded child, destroying both.

Thanks for the welcome guys!

And don't think you went unnoticed back there by the mixing desk, laughing out loud at his decidedly dodgy jokes :D  But an excellent and entirely unexpected choice of support: nice one.

Chaps and chapesses,

Thank you so much for just the best night I think the band's had in a live environment. I can say that from the stage, it was all I could do to stop giggling with general glee and fantabulousness that we'd made it such a night to remember. A proper Xmas riot in the true style of things.

First off, thank you to our new official 6th member for joining us for our gloriously shambolic cover of that Wizzard track. Without whom we'd have been properly rumbled for the under-rehearsed sham that we actually are.  ;)

Secondly, a mighty thank you (you know who you are! ;) ) for the creation and subsequent gifting of the only left handed Stylophone in the world. I'm still gobsmacked at the sheer solderment of it all!

Lastly, thanks to all and sundry who took the time and effort to come down and make our night what it was. And it was OUR night. Me and the boys merely made the noise, it was you fine people that made it an event.

Gawd bless you and can I personally wish you the bestest of Christmases. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

J xx

The best gig I've been to in a long line of great gigs.
I've got a lot from Jem and Frost. Outstanding music, most of a new wardrobe 8-) , but most of all I've met some fantastic people. Thank you Jem, thank you Frosties*.

Yes indeed!! That was definitely the most relaxed gig i've seen for a while. The relaxedness made no difference to the quality of the music, that was top notch. :D

There probably no way we could top this at RoSfest ;)

Indeed probably one of the finer points of the band not doing a gazillion gig's throughout
the year,it makes the shows all the more special eh?

My first post on here...may as well put up my blog from my MySpace page  :D

I had been looking forward to this gig for some time.  I had read a lot about Frost this year without actually hearing any of the music, and had bought a ticket to go to this gig on the basis that it was part of a House of Progression Christmas party weekend.  I bought their first album at the same time as I ordered their second album, and listened to it a couple of times and wondered what all the fuss was about.  I listened to the second album for the first time to and from a gig at the Robin in Bilston, and liked bits of it, but again wondered why there was such a big fuss.  Then over the last few weeks I have listened to them a bit more, and over the last two weeks a lot more, and over the last week almost constantly...I think it would be fair to say that both albums have grown on me and thankfully before this gig came around I could see precisely what all the fuss was about.

As well as the music, the thing I really like about Frost* is the way they are totally on top of the whole branding and merchandising side of things.  Over this year I have spoken with so many bands who have told me that going forward the money will be in merchandising rather than in the musical product itself, and Frost*, with their Frosterisk, seem well placed to benefit from that.  So I bought a hooded top and tshirt - great images, good quality and very fairly priced.  And so Experiments in Mass Appeal became Experiments in Mass Apparel on the hoodie - simple, but genius.  And they were giving out badges with Experiments in XMas Appeal on them.  And they had a stage backdrop featuring a great big red Frosterisk on a black background.  It reminds me of the brilliant way Marillion used the jester back in the day...and I must have over 50 Marillion tshirts...

And so back to the gig itself...The Peel was packed.  I was at the two Pendragon shows in November, and it was more full than those shows.  The support act tonight was...a comedic magician - and he was just perfect for the party atmosphere which had already risen within the place.  You can find him on MySpace at myspace.com/tv_rots_my_head under the name of Al "The Gentleman Geek", and he produced a performance full of wit, while performing magic tricks, some sideshow attractions, such as lying on a bed of nails while having a breezeblock on his chest broken with a sledgehammer, and the final escape from a straitjacket - into which he was assisted by Racing Hippo, who I had previously only seen online in some of the fora I inhabit.  it was the greatest of fun, and I will long remember the brilliant line that "the egg has left oeuf".

And so to the main attraction, and the crowd were very well warmed up for this now.  The opening to I Believe In Father Christmas led us into Black Light Machine and we were lauched into more of a party than a gig, with a very relaxed band interacting perfectly with a very dedicated and appreciative audience.  John Mitchell was clearly having some problems with feedback (which I later heard was being caused by the lights), but while he was frustrated by this the audience simply did not mind, and nothing was going to spoil this experience.  One of my favourites, Pocket Sun, was followed by the excellent Experiments In Mass Appeal, and the place was rocking and bouncing and full of absolutely positive energy.  Apparently it was something from Tupac's California which moved into Hyperventilate, and the band threw santa hats out into the audience - and they must have had a good throw on them because one reached me standing at the sound desk.  Picture a room full of santa hats, because that was now the image I had looking towards the stage.  Wonderland moved into Snowman and things eased off a little as the audience sang the end of the song.  John Jowitt was using his Rickenbacker ("one of the weapons of prog") and now appeared in a red wig, as John Mitchell produced his best Jimmy Saville impression "could you fix it for me to buy the Frost* record", and we were into Toys.  "How much longer have we got", Jem Godfrey asked - it was 25 minutes.  "What have we got which lasts 25 minutes", he asked, and we were into Milliontown...and the sight of John Mitchell and Andy Edwards playing some keyboards.  And this classic epic brought an excellent set to an end.  The relaxed atmosphere on stage had not meant a relaxed performance - it was the highest quality, at times hard to understand how Andy produces so much from such a small drumkit, and Declan Burke's vocals suit the tracks perfectly.

On returning to the stage Jem told us of his long standing hatred of the Mellotron ("the second weapon of prog"), "and this next song has got Mellotron in it, which means we did not write it"...and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway and Fly On The Windshield came as a wonderful surprise, leading into The Other Me, with a very funky beat to it.  And maybe it was just my ears deceiving me, but I thought I heard the drum opening to Rock 'N' Roll in the ending to the song.  I know I heard "shabba" !  And there was a well-deserved second encore - it seems Declan's voice had gone, so once he had done a Bez he left the stage, and it appeared that someone from the audience was going to get up and take over until he said he did not sing but he did play the saxophone...but the day was saved by the Cosmic Lawnmower - up he got and produced a fine rendition of I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day.  It turns out he does sing in a covers band and they had played the song the previous night - still, kudos to him for getting up in front of the crowd after such a performance from Frost* and pulling it off.  It was a brilliant gig, one of the best atmospheres I have encountered, a top notch performance, and just perfect interaction between band and audience - so here it was, Merry Christmas, everybody's having fun.
