I, like all of you, love Frost*. I also like Dream Theater, Marrilion, & It Bites. What recommendations would you good people have for my listening pleasure? I heard a rumor of a new Frost album this year but my soundholes require musical food until then!
In the words of Marillion, nothing fills the hole.
There is only one Frost*. However, there are a number of decent Marillionesque bands out there, Gazpacho being one. For Dream Theater fans, I recommend a Portuguese band called FramePictures. I can't think of any bands similar to It Bites at the moment.
Other considerations:
Touchstone
Spock's Beard
IQ
Porcupine Tree
Tinyfish
I play a lot of this kind of stuff on my show, Experiments in Mass Appeal (//http://www.thedividingline.com/eima). I hope you find something you like.
If you like the slightly heavier side of Dream Theater I enjoy a band called Redemption that features Fates Warning's Ray Alder on vocals
Hmm, let's see...
- Spock's Beard
- Neal Morse
- Sylvan
- A.C.T
- Magic Pie
- Beardfish
- Moon Safari
- Blackfield
- Porcupine Tree
- Echolyn
- Enchant
- InVertigo
- Lazuli
- Overhead
- The Tangent
- Transatlantic
- District 97
- Riverside
- Karmakanic
- The Flower Kings
- Little Atlas
A bit heavier:
- Pain Of Salvation
- King's X
- Fates Warning
- Sieges Even
- Threshold
- Suspyre
And tons of other stuff, of course. 8-)
Thanks guys, plenty for me to be going on with there....
It would be great to know favourite albums as well, it would be typical of me to pick a duff album to listen to first ;)
If you like It Bites, you should buy a copy of the Kino album "Picture" - it features John Mitchell, John Beck, Pete Trewavas and Chris Maitland. Top stuff.
If you're in the mood for something a little lighter, I heartily recommend "Wonderland" by Judie Tzuke...it's not prog but it is a fabulous album.

What about TBA ? :D
Big Big Train - The Underfall Yard, and it features Jem on the title track.
Yeah, Porcupine Tree are pretty incredible, and most certainly worth trying out. I've fallen in love with Lightbulb Sun, but I started with Fear of a Blank Planet and Deadwing, two absolutely incredible albums.
Some favs of mine from my list:
- Spock's Beard: V
- Neal Morse: Testimony
- Sylvan: Posthumous Silence
- A.C.T: Last Epic
- Magic Pie: The Suffering Joy
- Beardfish: Destined Solitaire
- Moon Safari: Blomljud
- Blackfield: Blackfield
- Porcupine Tree: In Absentia
- Echolyn: Mei
- Enchant: Tug Of War
- InVertigo: Next Stop Vertigo
- Lazuli: En avant doute
- Overhead: And We're Not Here After All
- The Tangent: The Music That Died Alone
- Transatlantic: Bridge Across Forever
- District 97: Hybrid Child
- Riverside: Second Life Syndrome
- Karmakanic: Wheel Of Life
- The Flower Kings: Unfold The Future
- Little Atlas: Surface Serene
A bit heavier:
- Pain Of Salvation: The Perfect Element
- King's X: Gretchen Goes to Nebraska
- Fates Warning: A Pleasant Shade Of Grey
- Sieges Even: The Art Of Navigating By The Stars
- Threshold: Critical Mass
- Suspyre: A Great Divide
All subjective choices, of course.
Anathema - We're Here Because We're Here
It would be remiss of me not to plug... um... mention Manning (//http://www.guymanning.com/2009site/index.html) at this juncture.
Last year's album, Charlestown, has had some truly awesome reviews and is rated in the top 3 of many "album of the year" polls/charts.
There's a bundle of samples on the website.
And their drummer's a hippo! Extraordinary!
on the subject of Frosties, you could check out Kyo's mob, Relocator, who, as an additional bonus used Derek Sherinian (ex Dream Theater) on keys for their first album. I liked the last Transatlantic album, The Whirlwind, and virtually any Arena album (ex Marillion, JM on guitar).
However none of these have a hippo anywhere near a drum kit
This RWA (//http://www.ronaldwahle.com) fellow seems to be very good also!
But seriously, it's indeed bleeding hard to find a substitution for Frost*. They're quiet unique. :?
But if I might give some recommendations:
MuteMath (modern pop/rock)
Monks Avenue (more modern pop/rock)
Work of Art (sounds totally like 80's Toto which I happen to like a lot!)
RiverSea (atmospheric prog?!). So far only one demo EP out but a full album is due for summer 2011
Leaving the Ozone (ambient music by Christophe Jacquelin with (full orchestration!!) + the voice of Danielle Gaha)
Porcupine Tree ( anything really...)
Blackfield (= Porcupine Tree *light*. Song crafting A+)

Unique? Certainly. Quiet? Only half the time; the rest, they're bloody loud 8-)

Quite then?!
At the moment... Riverside, The Pineapple Thief, Porcupine Tree, Dec Burke, Manning, Panic Room and Florence and the Machine are all taking up space on my MP3 do-dah, alongside The Philadelphia Experiment and other Frost* of course :D

My favourite album of 2010. Stunning stuff.
For a more vocally centred approach I would heartily recommend the Swedish act Moon Safari and their stunning album Lover's End. Their vocal harmonies are absolutely stunning and by all accounts, by those who have seen them live, they also can deliver the goods in that department on stage.

Try Riverside, Pure Reason Revolution & Dream Theater. Enochian Theory would be my off the wall choice and don't forget Touchstone, Big Elf & Opeth and a million and one others. Happy listening!
Give OSI a spin. Very good, plenty of glitching in there too :P

+1 for Pure Reason Revolution. Latest album Hammer and Anvil is excellent, but last album Amor Vincit Omnia is a bit more Frost-like, some heavy synth and guitar, with great harmony vocals

Yup. PRR's AVO is a total blinder. Pink Floyd and Steeleye Span meet Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails. Just brilliant album.
By the way, Cardiacs?
Quote from: "tomskerous"By the way, Cardiacs?
definitely.
as for PRR, how does AVO compare with the Dark Third?

Two different animals, I'd say. AVO has a notably industrial approach, whereas EVOO is extra virgin olive oil.
