Title: Frost* at ProgDreams VI!
Post by: AnsOnkruid on July 08, 2016, 11:44:12 PM
Hey all!

So this was just announced and I am already so incredibly happy and excited (https://scontent-amt2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/13645285_512178988988310_4323824264577193829_n.jpg?oh=d1862de6ae53b02ad5496951fa33ff64&oe=57EE5DF3) and please feel free to come over and share the happiness! I can't believe I'm seeing my favourite progpeople again after so many years :D

OK - this is far enough away to get plans in place.  Who's in?

I'm guessing that flying to Schipol is best from the UK, but any advice after that gratefully received on:
2) good hotels close to the venue etc etc

There are direct flights to Rotterdam which is closer but it's probably cheaper and more frequent flights to Schiphol, train from Schiphol will take between 53mins and 80mins depending on which service you take.

A quick look on google shows a few nearby hotels ranging in price from £50 - £85

Don't get your passport stolen at Schipol. It makes it hard to get home.
In other news,  double decker trains are cool...

This is where the bands normally stay, and if you're staying for the full three days you can take advantage of their 3-nights-for-the-price-of-2 offer. I've reserved a suite, all to myself, for 170 Euros  8)

I've previously stayed in the NH hotel nearby, which is also smart and comfortable.

This is about 12km from my house, so I'll try and send some info later (am on holiday at the moment).

I'd say that you're all welcome to stay with us, but suspect we might be rapidly overwhelmed  8)

Well, anyone that is coming is indeed welcome to come over for pre-gig nibbles. I'll rent enough bikes that we can then all pedal the 12km to the venue through the wide open polder landscape  8)

(Lord, what I have I just let myself in for?)

Oh man you guys have been in my life for so long, even I do feel old now. :P I remember being so young and visiting this place (well, technically, we had an other place back then) every single day. Oh, the joy it brought me. This tiny community did wonders for me. The friends I've made and the music I've discovered... I wouldn't be the same without it.  I have and will always love this place :)

So, emotional rant over. Time for some biscuits! And, to stay on topic: I'm tempted to go both days, anyone who wants to cat-sit?

For those wanting to take photos, here is the De Boerderij camera policy, as stated on their website:

Am I allowed to take photos at a concert?

As a rule the use of small, so-called compact cameras (without a removable lens) and smart phones is permitted. However, you are not allowed to bring professional equipment / single-lens reflex cameras (SLRs) inside the venue.

Only if you, as a professional or amateur photographer, have submitted a request for an accreditation in advance and it has been granted, you can use a professional camera at the concert. Requests for an accreditation can be submitted no later than 3 days before a show by sending an e-mail to info@boerderij.org
.

I have done that in the past and they are reasonable about it. Your name is added to a list and you will be issued with a wristband on entry. Anyone seen using a DSLR without a wristband will be challenged.

Assuming they have their normal lighting guy (Rene Haak) on duty, you can expect the lighting to be very good, so go for it!

FWIW, I've taken DSLR pix at De Boerderij quite a few times and have never had to get accreditation first, but admittedly, that hasn't been in the last couple of years.

But they're nice people at the venue, so I imagine that if you follow the process well in advance, it should be fine.

There will be a curry on the Friday evening in Zoetermeer for those who are arriving early. It's being done through facebook, so if you aren't on there (or you are but haven't already been invited) let me know and I'll pass your name on to the organiser.

The whole thing will be filmed so it would be extremely annoying to have a bank of giant lenses blocking the stage. This is one of my pet hates (of which I have many), amateur photographers, who have paid to get in, claiming a space at the front of the stage all night and blocking the view of other people, who have paid to get in.
Bring back the old 3 song rule and ban photography unless you have a pass. Sorry if that upsets people but I think it's unfair on the band and the punters.

Finally bought my tickets: some weird proximity effect made me lazy in ordering. But the point being, there are still tickets left for ProgDreamsVI, so anyone who's been wavering about coming: do.

Anyway, who all here is coming? Add to the list:

Trapezium Artist
DueyC
AnsOnkruid (?)
Nellie  8)

We were at the front between The Boss and Mitchell.  Similar place tonight for Lonely Robot.
Set was Hyperventilate, BLM, Milliontown, the FS suite, with The Other Me for encore.  Typical mix of humour and top musicianship.  Video recorded by the venue.

Interesting that EIMA material seems to be lacking these days - and Milliontown is back.
However, add TDL and Numbers to that setlist and you'd have my perfect Frost* gig. 8)

What is it with Frost* and injured digits? :o First there was Jem and his broken finger just before the Celebr8 gig, now he has arthritis in his right thumb.  And now Blunders joins in.  Occupational hazard obviously.
I assume he's playing with Lonely Robot tonight? Was his thumb OK for Frost* last night?

I was standing off to the right with L33VEY and DueyC. The sound that close to the front wasn't balanced at all: rather dominated by Mitchell's amp, with relatively little of the keys. But I suspect we were drowning them out with our singing anyway  :P

More anon. I have videos of 2 minutes of the end of BLM and 2.5 minutes of Craig's drum solo, if anyone is that way inclined. Can upload to YT later 8)

Still, the band look on form and glad to hear everyone had a good time.

After the Lonely Robot set on Sunday JM asked me if I liked the new songs. I (tactfully) pointed out that his amp drowned out all the other instruments for those of us in the front row, so all I knew about the new songs was that they contained guitar  ;)

To be fair, DueyC did point out this likelihood before the Lonely Robot gig, based on the Frost* gig the night before, and had situated herself somewhat off-centre to avoid being in the direct firing line of JM's Marshall amp. The main PA at De Boerderij is not very audible if you stand right in the front row, but you can at least position yourself away from on-stage amps.

But I thought it'd be nicer to stand in the middle and persuaded everyone to move. From there, the guitar and bass amps, and Blunders' drums were very audible, but the vocals and keys far less so.

Made for nice pix though and besides, the gig was recorded and filmed, so we can relive it in a more balanced way in the future.

Found this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8OIwK808x4), poor audio quality but............

And that's AnsOnskruid right in the middle of the shot at the bottom: wearing a baseball cap with a glowstick wrapped around it (the shorter one, not the taller  8)).

Woo, I'm famous! Nice to see you all :)

Too bad that the tiny robot at the Lonely Robot gig didn't do anything. I thought it was one of those dancing robots? :(
