Title: Jem, Andy, and August 10th...
Post by: Andy Edwards on July 30, 2014, 10:19:20 AM
Hi frosties....

As there are some people out there that have never heard of Frost I have decided as a run up to Jem and my reunion gig to put some frost tracks up on my facebook page with a bit of chat behind each track.
As this might be of interest to some of you guys here is the link to my page....

https://www.facebook.com/andy.edwards.drummer

It would be great if you could spread the word about this gig too, I think there are some Frost fans who would like to come who still don't know about it.
For those of you still in two minds about going here are some things to consider...

1) this is the first time Jem and I have played together for half a decade
2) you will get to see us improvising, in other words, the inner workings of how all those songs first came about
3) you will see Jim's debut on Chapman stick!
4) the venue is tiny and very intimate so it will almost impossible not to come up and say hello and we would love to see you will....

Spread the word Frosties!

I'm thinking of going, need to check a few other potential commitments first. There's a video on the Andy Edwards page linked at the top of Andy and Julie Slick and Steve Lawson playing. Reminds me of the improvs from the Trey Gunn double duo/double-trio era KC.

I'll be there - ticket ordered but not sure if I'll actually get a physical ticket, or if I just need to take a printout of the emailed reciept?

Thanks to everyone who came last night...what a night!

Good to see some of you there, and Pedro filmed it! we recorded it and my good friend Rob Groucutt photographed it.
Jem and Steve were both fantastic, and Jem's solo piece was very moving I thought.

As I said, we did a multi track recording of the whole night, we lost a channel of drums but it all went down and Steve will be mixing that soon I hope.
And if you guys are into this kind of thing we can do it again I hope!

Please check Steve Lawson out, as well as being a formidable bass player he has a lot to say about making music in 21st century....  http://www.stevelawson.net/

Thanks again and I hope you can make it this Sunday for the gig with Brianna Corrigan from the Beautiful South.

All the best

I'd love to hear the recording - I asked Jem on twitter if you all minded me doing an audio recording but I heard nothing back so I didn't do one. There were loads of brilliant moments in the evening, so really chuffed we'll be able to hear it again.

Last night was great! Having not been to an improv gig before I worried that it might get a bit boring but I couldn't have been more wrong. There was some superb musicianship on show from each of the L.E.G trio and it was particularly good to see TBE and Jem playing together at last.

Great venue too, very small. No lock on gents loos but once at the Wulfrun in Wolves I saw a poo on the floor so I'm not complaining.

Nice to see Pedro there after a "is that Pedro in the car next to us? It looks like him. Nah, probably not him. Oh he's facebooked me!".

Nice to meet Jim D too, sorry we didn't say goodbye properly we needed to head off and you were busy chatting to Jem.

All in all a very lovely evening. The only downer was that I had a bit off a sore throat which is now the worst case of man flu in recorded history. Could be Ebola. Sorry if everyone in attendance dies.

I'm glad to hear so many Frost*ies were in attendance. And doubly glad that the performance was recorded.

Andy - I think if you announce you and Jem are skipping stones on the Thames, you'll have an audience.

On Sunday Jem did a solo improvisation and it was like hearing a Frost track but from the inside out.
I've heard some mixes already from the night and there is some exciting stuff there.

For musicians like Jem (and myself to a certain extent) there are a great many problems to overcome to get an album out or do a gig. It costs in time and money and invariably there is no profit. Guys like Nick Barrett and Rob Reed and Jem are geniuses at making this work. But it can be difficult, I couldn't do it which is why I haven't got my own band!

Steve Lawson has found so many ways for musicians like us to get out and play and make recordings. He has lectured all over the world about what he calls 'sustainability' for musicians. This is why projects like this are worth supporting.
So far we have done a gig together, we may be releasing some recordings, we have some great photos and I'm sure videos will be appearing shortly....and everyone who attended I think enjoyed the night...so expect to see more of your favourite musicians appearing in this context in the future.

And I think fans will play a much bigger part in the this process, and fans who are also artist could greatly benefit, but that's another conversation.

Great gig - I put a photo up last night here which got some nice retweets and faves when I tweeted about it; https://www.flickr.com/photos/jamesdavies/14703051039/

I also assembled some work-in-progress thoughts on the gig in a sort-of-review (kind of improvised in the spirit of the evening :)) here - http://www.zogue.com/blog/2014/gig-review-steve-lawson-andy-edwards-and-jem-godfrey/

Plus I also have some video of the first half of Jem's bit - I can put it on the world's most popular online video sharing platform if that's cool, but I will try to seek approval first!

I was sat with Jake and his missus down the front - nice to meet you dude. Sawtooth, where were you? I stood around for a bit in my previously-agreed Frost* teeshirt near what I thought were a bunch of forum guys (you can't miss Pedro in his named shirt for example) but I couldn't seem to get an "in" to say "hi", so the long drive back beckoned me away.

Anyway, as I said in my "review"..."for a Sunday evening musical gathering it was about as far away from a "blues jam" as you could imagine, and was truly 21st Century improv showing what modern music technology could do".

I'm very much hoping to see more of this sort of stuff!

Apologies for being a right miserable git and hardly talking to anyone but the 180 mile journey home had to take precedence to socialising.
A fabulous evenings entertainment, just wish it was a little closer to home!

I think everyone here knows the JIB fambly go above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to distance travelled to gigs John, so there's never need to apologise for having to make a swift exit! Lovely to see the three of you again, hope the next time comes around sooner rather than later  :)

I think I have mostly recovered from my man flu now. The nurse said it was a virus. Ebola is a virus. Make of that what you will. I do hope nobody has managed to catch it, I wasn't sneezing or coughing or anything like that on Sunday so I think you're all pretty safe.

Anyway I was reminiscing and I just remembered Jem's epic biro solo, excellent work.
