I ordered the Eyes of The World cd from the Darwins Radio site a while back after listening to the mp3 samples and deciding that they sounded pretty good but my cd still hasn't arrived yet! Has anyone else ordered direct from the Darwins Radio site and had the same problem?
I did but that was about 1 and a half year ago. From what I recall that went just fine. :)
Top album.
Why don't you send Dec a PM if you have any further trouble - he's a lovely, lovely bloke and I'm sure he can help.

Turded, just avoided a wine/laptop experiance
Well Tim put down his drum tracks at JM's studio this week and I'm told they sound mighty. The rest of the recording will be finished in December and then Jem to mix it for us in Jan.
The new album is called "Template for a Generation" and has 3 songs which clock in at 45 mins - with maybe a forth acoustic thing I have that might end up on there too ;)
Dec xx
Great news, really enjoyed "Eyes of the World" looking forward to the next album.

Can't wait to hear this....hmm....time to start working on Twang for a Darwin's gig at The Peel? ;)
I saw Darwins at the Peel. If I recall rightly, John in Black n clan and a very pissed Jem were there. But Pedro, it seems that anything you suggest is granted by Twang - guess they will be on in 2009

Yes :D made me go back and find this http://frost.informe.com/darwins-radio-dt243.html (http://frost.informe.com/darwins-radio-dt243.html)
Is Twang now a gig request service?
Can I have a Touchstone headline gig please? And can you ask Martin Orford to do a full band show with his new album?
Ta.
Pedro got Touchstone & Tinyfish too :D

I am sooo impressed by the mighty Twang and the good people at The Peel. It's easy for me to sit here and spout my dream show suggestions but it takes the real magicians to get the "Beer and Mirrors" organised. :D
As for the Touchstone headline and "Martin Orford's (not that) Old Roadshow" - both cool ideas. Hmm....Tinyfish might not be too far away from having their new album ready for launch....hmm....launch party?
:)
Credo will support Tinyfish for their launch in April ish and Tinyfish will support Credo for their launch in September ish. That was the plan at the last Credo gig anyway.
Marvellous! :)
Are Credo any good?
I like what I've heard.
Try "Too late" on their MySpace page (//http://www.myspace.com/credogb).
It's quite like early Marillion (e.g. Script) to my ears. I bought their CD at Summer's End but I haven't given it a proper listen yet(!) - other peple's CDs just won't get out of the players!
I've yet to see them live. :)
Quote from: "LivingForever"Are Credo any good?
I think they are a great band, I've seen them several times (more than any other band recently). Their live shows are consistently good. Mark the frontman/singer is a real character and Tim the guitarist always has a fantastic sound, the rest of them are very good too. As Pedders said they sound quite like Fish era Marillion but more up to date. A lot of that due to Mark's style of singing. Well worth a listen IMO.

I couldn't agree more John. My copy of Eyes of The World arrived this week whilst I was on holiday. It was a lovely "welcome home present".
I thought I'd better order it, especially when Dec asked what I thought of it at the CRS BOTY gig. :? :? :?
EOTW is packed with awesomefully wonderish stunnery an' no mistake.
Ooh, can it be too much longer until his Jem-ship does the business on the new album?

Latest on the DR website is talking about 4 songs of 20 minutes each...
This is turning into the Tales of Topographic Oceans for the noughties?
I think I could have Hexed this one.
Latest message on MySpace says that the 4 songs come in at under 50 minutes...
I'm so looking forward to the new album. It should be an absolute cracker!

I'm very anxious to hear the final product.
Just had a bit of a listen and I have to say I'm loving it :)
Can't wait to hear the final thing, marvelous work!
Damn I can't stop listening to it. I know I'll hate myself for it later, because it'll be so stuck in my head, that the final version will sound weird.

rawk!!! thanks, Dec!
Curious. I justed typed 'Darwin's Radio' into iTunes and the first album that came up featured a topless woman holding a beer bottle between her breastesseses. I wonder what will happen if I type 'Darwin's Boombox.'
Mama's got a squeezebox
Daddy never sleeps at night.
Well, I just got around to finally look Darwin's Radio up and give my ears a treat... and what I heard immediately made me buy the CD!
Guess it will occupy my ears for quite a while, and that's a good thing.
I'm looking forward to the new one as well, the teaser's quite an appetizer! :D
Dec has been good to his word and has put a new 3 minute teaser of Template on MySpace here:

Ouch... that MySpace mush does indeed sound terrible. Compared to the Frost tracks it just sounds really off :-(
But... the teaser sounds really interesting... really looking forward to the album proper.
Yes, yes. I've been watching the website for news. Perhaps Jem could give Sir Declan of Burkenshire a platonic poking to give us a wee update?
I've already given Dec a bit of a spanking and requested that the website gets updated ASAP. Once he can sit down again I'm sure he'll be on to it.

Mick has got Darwins supported by Jump in September. September is
the month of prog at The Peel this year. Unfortunately for most of you lot, it is the night It Bites are playing.
That must be the 26th then...?

In my semi-official capacity as Darwin's Radio's new PR officer, I am delighted to report that the new album, Template for a Generation, will be out in mid-August and boy, is it a corker! I was privileged to hear the whole thing yesterday and it blew my socks off. It's such a step forward from Eyes Of The World. You guys are gonna LOVE it!
There will also be another gig in late September, so watch this space.
Thank you very much for the update, catherine. Disappointed to have to wait another two months after thinking release was imminent, but grateful to know it'll be out soon. Looking forward to it muchly.

Word.
I've also heard the whole thing and I can absolutely concur that the residents of Planet Prog are going to LOVE this album. I think it ticks every single box for a classic prog album - 20 minute songs ending in great anthemic refrains, odd time, plenty of Moog-y solos, piano, washes of organ and mellotron, great guitar work, soaring melodies, thought provoking lyrics about the state of the modern world, it's all there in mighty capital letters -
P R O G !
If Mark Westworth doesn't win Best Keyboard Player at the CRS Awards next year, I'll be a very surprised man indeed. Dec too I think will finally get the recognition he deserves.
You simply must get hold of it when it comes out. You will not be disappointed I promise you. It's everything I think a classic prog fan
really wants to hear. 8-)

And for those of us that quite like musical experimentation, sound design and nabbing bits from pop and dance music, but hope the end result ocassionally has a solo or a drop of complex time where it fits?
I rather liked EotW as a slightly under-produced roundup of cosy favourite textures, (and thankfully it doesn't go in for, erm, 'homage' quite as much as Touchstone), but I really wouldn't want Tales from Topographic Eyes.
Now, who's heard The Duckworth Lewis Method (//http://www.myspace.com/dlmethod)? Rather loving The Age of Revolution.
Well, chacun a son gout, etc, but as someone who thought EOTW was pretty good if a little less than cohesive in places, but indicative of plenty of promise, my first thought on hearing TFAG was "Crikey!". It's in a different league.
No, it's not full of cutting edge dance/electro production techniques, but that wouldn't suit the music. It all fits together very nicely though.
Oh totally chacun and all that. But I feel I've already got plenty of albums that sound like what you're saying. They were interesting in their time, and part of how music evolved. Going for the One is a great record. The Genesis 70-75 remasters are fabulous. There's even some ELP that's not embarrasing. But if I want to listen to where I think music is continuing to build on that richness and invention and texturality, I'd rather listen to the second Lily Allen album... EIMA excepted, of course. :-)
The site's been updated. Good news and bad news.

I also got ticket number 007 for JJ and A, with a comment underneath "Ahh Mr Bond". Why don't Ticketmaster don't go to this trouble...

Looks like they went to the same field Jem & the boys did - and the clouds were still the same!!!!!!!!!!!!
No, those were fresh Northamptonshire clouds, specially prepared for the occasion. What the photos don't show, though, are the swarms of nasty biting flies that were around that evening.
Those Northamptonshire clouds don't change much looking at the photographers portfolio
OK, some DR news:
1) The shiny new DR website (//http://www.darwinsradio.co.uk/) is up - at least, a teeny tiny corner of the new website, with links on it to order the new CD. The full site should be following later in the month. The image on the site is the cover for the new album.
2) Anyone wishing to hear a bigger snippet of the new album before it's released than the "teaser" currently available on MySpace will be able to do so on 5th August, which is when Classic Rock Presents Prog issue 3 comes out. This will contain an edited version of "Breathe It In", which is track 2 on the new album, and there will also be an article on the band in the magazine. DR will be in very good company, as the cover CD also features a track from the forthcoming Porcupine Tree album. Nice!
3) The next issue of the Classic Rock Society magazine will contain a review of the new DR album by the very lovely Martin Hudson, who rather enjoyed it.
Thanks Catherine - ordered already. :D
Only £9 including p&p in the UK? Total bargain. Hopefully, this way they'll actually get the money for their work... :?
Thanks for the info, catherine. TfaG has been ordered. $15.50 + $2.50 = $18 US. Silly prog band. I would have paid much more. :D
You'll be getting a lot of music for the money!

heh and true!
although, it does bring up a point for me: one of my imagined benefits of musicians producing/selling their own music would be a lower price point. I've thought we've been paying high prices for cds because of the huge cut that the big companies take. so in that light, $18 for a cd is pretty stiff.
I love DR, and will support them, of course, but it's something to think about.
That's a fair point, rog. I'm sure we all want to support DR and other favorite bands with smaller fanbases who depend on us. I understand the logic of passing on the 'middle man bypass' savings, but I don't fault them for charging premium CD pricing and pre-orders are probably their best shot at any kind of revenue. In this age where the artist gets little to nothing for album sales, not to mention sales lost to pirating and torrent sites, an artist who incurs production costs by self-publishing should at least attempt to recoup their investment. With lesser known acts like Darwhatstheirfaces, it'll be a struggle just to break even. And in the case of 'Template,' it wouldn't really serve DR to put it on iTunes unless it's purely for exposure, because the most they'll get for their hard work is $3 and change, since they can't charge more than $1.29 per track and there's only 3 tracks. I'm sure Apple gets a piece of that, as well. If we want these bands to be able to continue releasing new music, we need to make it worth their while. That said, I'm grateful for my $8 Frost*Fest Live CD - a bargain by any measure, but I'm happy to pay any reasonable amount for quality. /brainspew

But this is the current exchange rate and economy climate working for you. You gotta take into account that they are a UK based band and as such have recorded and produced (incl. all the physical stuff like the printing of cd's and artwork) in the UK and as such have to pay in GBP not in USD.
In my situation the price of GBP 10 (incl. P&P) comes to a very moderate EUR 12.00 which is quite a bargain for us Europeans.
Ordered mine too (I love the first album)
With regard to the cost, it's important to remember that not only have they already shelled out for studio time and the like (whioch won't have been record company subsidised) they will undoubtedly not have been able to benefit from the 'economies of scale' (ie bulk discounts) for the production of the cds as they will have had a relatively 'short run'
I can't believe anyone is griping about spending £8 for a CD direct from the band when many albums are 1.5 - 2 times as much as that in stores (of which the band sees a fraction.)
Quote from: "LivingForever"I can't believe anyone is griping about spending £8 for a CD direct from the band when many albums are 1.5 - 2 times as much as that in stores (of which the band sees a fraction.)
Nobody is griping about the GBP price but understandably they are a bit about what it then costs in USD. But again, that is something beyond DR's control.
I think ChrisX and Mooncat hit it on the head previously. £9 (inc p&P) is a great price for a quality album like I expect this will be (based on the last one) and am very happy to pay this as I know it is going straight to the artist.
But that is from a UK / European perspective where a non-chart CD (i.e. a prog one!) in a High Street store such as HMV will set you back between £12 -£15. If you like buying Top 10 CDs, Tesco etc will meet your music requirements for £7 upwards but non-mainstream stuff is difficult to find and is expensive. To put it in perspective, £9 is around $15 US. I am aware that is on the expensive side for CDs to those living in the US where such items tend to be cheaper in real terms (there has to be some benefit to living on that side of the pond, even if you don't get to see Frost* very often! ;) ).
That said, it goes both ways as I've just spent $28 US (£17.50) pre-ordering the basic version of the (as yet unrecorded) next Spock's Beard CD and that doesn't seem very cheap to me due to the $8 postage charges.
Bottom line (excuse the SB pun!) is that if it supports bands I like and I know the money is going to them directly, I'm happy to buy on faith with pre-orders. If Jem goes down that route with TPE, I'm in!
The new Darwin's CD will deffo be worth the money, trust me! :)
I'll be looking to pre-order it from Sunday onwards. It'll be my first proper taste of DR and I can't wait to hear it. :)
Latest issue of Classic Rock Presents PROG has the full second track from the new DR CD on it.
The exclusive headline track is an edit of Time Flies from Porcupine Tree which weighs in at 5 mins 23 seconds and, to be honest based on just one listen, I'm not that impressed....it seems a little underwhelming to me. I will, of course, listen to it a load more times as the CD takes up residence in the car until the full DR album turns up.
The 11 minutes 20 seconds of DR's track is just so much more interesting IMHO. :)
They've put the whole track on?
They were given a 5' 30" edit for the cover CD!
Nope, it really is that long and it's brilliant. :D
pre-ordered! :D
Can't wait.
some of you are misinterpreting what I'm saying about cd costs. I just know that people have griped about $15 cds for as long as there have been cds, and the idea that bands would produce/market their cds without the middleman/big company was going to be the way that cd prices would be more reasonable. this is a much larger conversation than just DR, and as I said, I will continue to support the bands that I know and love. I understand the exchange rate situation, but in the end, we're paying more (sometimes/most times; not always [case in point: the FrostFest Live cd-a full cd for like 8$!!]) for cds when they are sold directly by the artist.
I'm just trying to discuss the larger issue of cost/distribution/change from the way it has been done/end result question. no need to jump on me because you perceive I'm not supporting DR or Frost* or whomever.

Pre ordered and hope as good as first album was :)

I understood what you meant and apologize if my comments were misconstrued and led to any misunderstanding. It was not my intention for it to appear that you were complaining. I didn't view your comments as such. You were merely pointing out that direct sales should, in theory, cost less than those sold through record labels and outside distributors. I wouldn't question your band loyalty and support for one second, nor should anyone else.

Well said Gents.
thanks, mates!
I guess the thing here is that, when you sell through a major distributor / record label, you can get deals worldwide so that the price is *reasonably* similar wherever you live.
If you're selling direct, you can sell for a nice price where you are, but by the time anyone overseas adds shipping and takes the exchange rate into consideration, the deal doesn't look so great.
Hence the bargain price of £8 in the UK (which is still £2 less than your average top 40 CD even if you buy it in an evil supermarket) doesn't look so great by the time you convert to USD and add shipping.

Perhaps Pedro just played it twice? ;)
Perhaps they'll get paid double as well....
(Well deserved BTW)
Don't believe everything you read on coverdisk sleeves....
I assume the theory goes that the cost of distributing the CD to the thousands of readers is much more than the fee the magazine charge the artists to include their track so, on balance, "the producers of this CD have paid the composers and publishers for the use of their music".
So, if I am right, for DR to get what they deserve, people still need to buy the full CD direct from them.
Slightly off topic, but does anyone here know how to get a hold of the Pictures EP that they have on their myspace page? I love that song.
Also pre-ordered Template last week, can't wait for that one!
Hi Philip,
The Pictures EP is currently out of stock, nad has been for some time. I've already suggested to the band that they should repress it (as I'd like a copy as well, and I'm sure I'm not alone).
You can listen to it on their MySpace page. (Sorry, can't put a link to that at present as it's barred at work).

Here: Darwin's Radio MySpace page (//http://www.myspace.com/darwinsradiouk)
Finally got a copy of the new Classic Rock Prog special for August. Listening to Breathe It In by Darwin's Radio on the cover disc I realised that I'd heard it before - live!
My first, and so far only taste of DR was at The Peel, in Sept 2007 I think it was, where I made a couple of vids on the compact. I dismissed them at the time, thinking that they were not up to much (The recordings, not the band!!), seeing them again now, perhaps I was being too hasty and a bit too critical of the recording. So, enough of my waffle, here are the DR boys with the instrumental middle of Breath It In.
Enjoy (//http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igCN2Xo2kTg)
Excuse the bouncing, it's difficult keeping still when the music's so good ;)
That's great, Brom! Any more where that came from?
(and any chance you could give it decent tags so that other people can find it?)
Am possibly a bit behind the curve here, but DR track on Prog Rock free CD is f*****g awesome !!
I meant to say anyone who has pre-ordered the new album had anything yet!!! I just forgot to put that bit in!!!
Karl ;)
Has anyone who has pre-ordered this from DR's website recieved it yet? I only ask as it does say that all pre-orders made before 14th August will be sent out immediately but as yet I haven't had a thing. Anyone shed any light on it?
Karl
The CDs were expected to be delivered to DR from the printers on Tuesday this week, but they didn't arrive. :(
There has unfortunately been an issue with the printing in the lyrics booklet, now being sorted out, which has meant that DR do not yet have them to send out. The revised delivery date they have for them now is "early next week" and they will be sent out just as soon as they have them to send. If you can contain yourselves until the end of next week I'm sure you will find your patience is handsomely rewarded with some very fine prog to listen to. :D
Sorry I couldn't be the bearer of better news - if anything changes I will let you know. The band is disappointed that they are not able to send out pre-orders this week as they had planned.
These things happen. Understandable. Thanks for the update, cath! I appreciate your rapid response.
Thanks for the update, I'm sure the album will be a winner.
Quote from: "eponymous"Have any US Frost*ies found an outlet that carries Classic Rock Presents Prog over here stateside?
I don't know about State-side, it's bloody impossible to find it in the UK.
Latest on the CDs is that they are now expected from the printers on Thursday this week, rather than Tuesday. Plans are in hand to get as many as humanly possible shipped out as soon as possible.

If the flipping things weren't so expensive I'd be tempted to buy spare copies. So far I have picked each issue from a shelf containing 7 or 8 copies close to release date.
It seems that others have had similar ideas - copies are on eBay for £15 - £20 (quite a good profit to be had it seems).
Of course, now I've said that I'll never see another one!
not too popular at Eltham WHSmith - I only got mine last Sat and there were 2 remaining copies, but it's the only WHSmith I have been able to get it in
Yay! The new DR CDs should be hitting doormats very soon now - they're back from the printers!
Darn it. I'm off on holiday tomorrow so it'll sit unopened for a few days
Still, something to look forward to on my return!!!!

Hit the doormat today and now spinning merrily away on track one - sounding good.
So how many Frosties* are featured in the credits apart from Dec, Jem and Catherine?
Well VitaminP has been here and I think we have Dene to thank for all this wonderful webbery and forumnosity.
I think Mr Mitchell's Outhouse engineer Ben has been seen on Frost* reports but I don't think he's a member.
My copy arrived today too! :D
Mine's not come yet! But I am hoping it will arrive tomorrow.
Just ordered my copy and announced the fact on Facebook, so no doubt about 90 of my "freinds" will be saying WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO?
Anyone got their copy yet apart from Brendan?

Having listened to all of it it's pretty complex stuff - should bear continued listening..
Quote from: "catherine"Mine's not come yet! But I am hoping it will arrive tomorrow.
There's something hugely ironic and unfair about that! :?
Yes, got my copy today and am giving it a first play right now.
First impressions? Well, I loved Eyes of the World but this is simply light years ahead in every respect. Despite some strong competition, this is already a contender for my album of the year. PT's The Incident is going to have to be some album to beat this!
Big thumbs up to Dec and the others for this. :D
PS - I think Dec's admiration for Dream Theater is showing a little more than on the last album but in a good way!
I'd have to agree with you there, DS.
It's not a disaster that I haven't got my "official" copy yet although I am really looking forward to it. I first heard the tracks on this album a couple of months back and was mightily impressed. I've listened to it many times since then and all I can say is that it's grown on me!
There are many times when I catch myself with a tune going around my head and I stop and think "What's that?" - and very often these days it seems to be something from Template for a Generation. Most recently it was with the intro of Breathe It In. But many parts of this new album are vicious and deadly earworms!
Got my copy this morning. Just had chance to listen to it.
I love it! :D :D :D :D
Lots of lovely textures and atmospheres. Reminded me in places of Wind and Wuthering era Genesis, which is a good thing in my opinion.
Can't wait to give it another listen.

Mucho agreement. Superb stuff. I hear a combination of Dream Theater and Frost* and that has to be a winner!
Just one gripe - it's waaaay too short!! 44 minutes in this day and age?? A 25-minute epic would just have rounded it off nicely!
(Everything is never enough)
totally agree about it being too short but i suppose that's a sign of it being a good album leaving you wanting more :D
One fantastic album, bit short but hey, QUALITY is the name of the day :)

Received my copy today here in sunny Florida, USA. Haven't given it a proper listen yet, I'm just pleased to report that it's arrived. 8-)
Yay! Right, set aside 45 minutes, get headphones and a few cold ones, send all those bikini-clad girls away (just for now) and let it take you away...
Just got the album earlier in the week, and haven't stopped listening to it - parts of it just won't leave my head.
Great album, and can't wait to catch them live some time.
Ordered :) and now waiting impatiently!
Love the album but a pity it's only 45 minutes
Overdosed happily on "Breathe it in" on the Classic Rock CD while trekking around Wales last week, arrived home to find the new CD waiting.
:D :D
Have been rationing myself. So have listened to "The Illusion Is Freedom" twice now and IMHO it's the bees knees with the dog's bits added as afters, superb soundscapes, absolutely first class! :D

I received my copy of "Template For A Generation" on Tuesday, arrived home on Tuesday evening and played it in my DVD player in the living room that night.
I was blown away by the music. It's so uplifting.
I've had it playing in the car ever since and not stopped listening to it (even when the wife is in the car [har de har] ).
Love all three tracks but the one that stands out for me at the moment is "Breathe It In".
Well done to the DR boys for a cracking CD.
hope mine gets here soon!
(wait. did I order it?...) :P
Well got it today and listened through it a good few times and I love it.
Now, when's DR playing on Scotland?
oh, gosh golly this is so good! Cairn is taking a nap, so I had to put on the headphones, and yay! it is fabulous. prog just like I like it. Dec, you and the boys have hit a winner.
thank you so much for sharing the love!

I asked Dec the exact same question.
We'd love to play Scotland, Mark's wife is from Scotland, so that's 3 of you that would be there :D So if you could just spread out and form a crowd :D
Seriously though, we're hoping to do some UK gigs April next year, so leave that with me and we'll sort that out.

I'd make it 5, and would surely bring a few musically like minded friends around. Depending on the venue restrictions, my 14 year old son and my wife would swell the numbers. WoW we are nearly in double digits already. :P

DPRP have reviewed Template For A Generation (//http://www.dprp.net/reviews/200943.php#darwin).
They could have been a bit more generous with their marks, I feel.
I agree, the first guy sounds like he's describing a "9/10" album up to that point.
I prefer his "position" on the album too.
Quote from: "DPRP"nowadays you'd more likely say that DR are a side project for IQ keyboardist Westworth and Frost* guitarist/ vocalist Burke.
I'd like Dec's view on that statement.

Morning!!
Click here (//http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJ2Jro9sXcs) for a 9-minute video montage of Darwin's Radio at The Peel two days ago.
Once again, I only shot clips because I wanted to enjoy the show rather than trying to keep still! So what you see is pretty much what I shot with a bit of pruning to make the transitions work a little better.
The crowd could have been a bit bigger (unfortunately It Bites were playing not far away on the same night) but we were treated to a storming set and I can't wait for these guys to play again. :)

I had no idea about any of this until now. I've just been catching up with it all in the past hour or so.
Great to hear that Dec is working on new stuff (especially with his old TSOR compadres Steve and Tim).
I'm looking very much forward to this.
