Title: RoSfest reviews
Post by: ich_bin_besser on May 03, 2009, 12:58:51 AM
Just read in the chat of an internet radio show ( http://www.thedividingline.com/up.html (http://www.thedividingline.com/up.html) ) that the guys ruled! Too bad I'm too stupid to copy the chatlog...

 <---this is what my eyes look like...it was that good!

I live in NJ, so it was a measly 185 mile journey to and fro, and there was no way I was going to pass up the chance to see this show!  There were too many amazing moments to even get into...the new song (name escapes me due to tiredness,) the band member theme songs which made me nearly pee my pants, Nick filling in and making it sound like they played together for years, Snowman 3.0 (still trying to figure out how Jem cloned himself, well done, mate!)

Beyond the music itself, I just need to say it.  It is AWESOME to see gifted musicians having a good time.  There was just a feeling of down to Earthness, if that's a word.  Bravo to Frost, and the faithful fans I was lucky enough to meet :)  I recognized Rogerg from the avatar, so I had to say hi lol :p  And, a huge thank you to Gr8gonzo for taking pics with my phone!  You did a great job, I'm sorry my goofy phone had horrible focus issues.  I don't have Photoshop or anything on this PC, so I will have to share a couple semi-fuzzy-shiny-eyed pics.  Hopefully I can make them a little nicer in a few days - but I have a funny feeling we'll have more picture goodness to come!

I'm not sure if there is a way to hide the images here to save your screens from exploding, so I'm just going to plop them in...enjoy!

Yes, they tore the roof off the place!

Me and NDV (I'm taller than him, but his hair makes us even)

I apologize again for the quality...but here's Frost, and Frosties!

Just a couple with me, pretty much baffled by the whole thing...I do believe Sir Jem was going for the "Epic pointing pose" on these
(//http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y142/Munchymeow/irl/SNC00070.jpg)

That's about it for now till I clean up the images - Hope all have a safe trip home!

Thanks for the blurry photos as a little teaser for the stories to come.

Never has a five-hour time difference felt so long...

Come on people, where are the tweets, photos, reviews, illicit youtube clips?
Title: Re: RoSfest reviews
Post by: Mirror on May 03, 2009, 01:08:54 PM
Sadly I refuse to tweet, I leave that to the birds :(

I won't go too much into the mix - I thought it was fine..Nick's vox was a bit low at times, one of Jem's boards was a little low, but that is like me peeing on a Picasso!  Honestly iI can't knock anything from that set, it was simply brilliant.  I really want to see that Snowman 3.0 rendition again...no spoilers!

I don't want to be that "jerk guy" who posts too much - all I can say is the DVD is going to be amazing, and I count myself as blessed for being there.  Magic.  That is the one word to describe it.  Magic.

ps...I did yelll "You'r a lion!!" at some point - noone seemed to get the obscure reference.  Hopefully the faithful got the joke lol

That's ok, I don't want to be me sometimes either!  ;)

Seriously, you have miles to go before "too much" and you have details that we-who-could-not-be-there would really like to hear.
Ok, "no spoilers" is a good idea so if Snowman has been revamped for example, some of us (but not all) might get to hear it at the DT shows. However, telling us what they played, funny things that happened, (what did you think of the intro music?), crowd reactions, etc. etc. are not spoilers. Remember that there aren't any further headline shows planned that I know about so you won't be spoiling very much IMHO. Your choice, of course.
Then again, perhaps I am just not used to being on the wrong side of the pond and dependent on the donations of others for information!  ;)

This is an interesting tidbit of info. So, he not worked up the pretty tough drumparts BUT also helped on backing vocals? I already knew he was very talented (just listen to the early Spock's Beard records and I respect him very much for delivering the baby Kevin Gilbert couldn't i.e. Shaming Of The True) but man, this guy is just too talented.

the show was unbelievable, I really don't know where to even start. And the guys were awesome to hang with, of course. We even heard a new song that blew me out of the fuckin water!

BTW from where I was sitting Nick's vox sounded awesome. They were perfectly loud. In fact his vocals in general were very tight. He was overall an awesome addition to the band and he even blew them away.

If talent were people, Nick would be China.  Actually that's one of the things I was thinking about watching that show - that could have been simply the most talented group I've ever seen!

As to the low vox thingie, it might have just been where I was, I wasn't knocking anything at all :)  I think he might have been going falsetto instead of belting some of the harmonies out, maybe that's what I heard.  I've probably just been listening to too much Rewiring Genesis  :)

...and I'm still cracking up thinking about those band member intros!

Yep, I know but to me every SB album from Feeling Euphoria has been quite dissappointing. Matter of fact, SB post V has been uninteresting to me.

I just got home and am completely exhausted, so I'll have to save my full comments and photos for later, but for now I give you - The Set List:

Hyperventilate
The Forget You Song
Wonderland
Falling Down (omfg)
Black Light Machine
EIMA
Snowman 3.0 (or is it 4 by now?)
No Me No You
Pocket Sun
Saline
Band Intros
Dear Dead Days
Milliontown

Encore:
The Other Me

So, "Toys" was absent, but I'm pretty sure I can still hear Dec's sigh of relief and, honestly, I can't see anyone complaining about it with that brilliant 2 hour performance.

Hats off to Mr. Nick "Duh"Virgilio for taking just two days of full band practice and playing Frost* like a friggin' beast.  Be glad, oh so glad, that this was recorded for posterity.  Amazing.

More later.

Thanks, gr8gonzo.

I hardly dare ask - but the question that I think will be on everyone's lips is: did the drummer play the oboe solo in Milliontown?
Title: Re: RoSfest reviews
Post by: Pedro on May 03, 2009, 11:17:00 PM
That is indeed a question that needs answering....another is, how cool is it that there was new stuff - TFYS, FD, S(v3), DDD?
I wonder how much can we hope to see in the DT support slot?

Nick did indeed play the oboe solo and it was flawless.  Needless to say, it was great to hear TFYS and Nick provided more than a little support on vocals throughout the set.  Falling Down was a bit of a standout, as there are so many overlapping vocal parts, and the guys really delivered.

Yes!  I was rather funny too, Nick came over, played the little bit, and gave Sir Jem of Godfrey a big old hug :)  It was one of the many really cool moments of the gig, and like gr8gonzo said, thank goodness it was recorded for posterity!

I'm looking around youtube for those damn damn member intros - honestly I never laughed that much at a non-comedy show!

Nick's vocals were perfect IMO. Especially in Falling Down the part that repeats 'falling down, falling down'. He was solid, and Jem with the lead vocals was just as awesome. Even though they said that was the hardest song to nail, it was the most mindblowing because of that.

Fffffcking awesome. We drove 7 hours just to see you guys, and it was so worth it. (I was the one with the 'bootleg' asterisk t-shirt design... ;))

Jem's solo was incredible. I cannot wait to hear this stuff again... CD, dvd, youtube, don't care. Didn't get a shirt, but that's ok. Didn't get to drink with the boys or get a picture with them :( but maybe next time.

To be fair, obviously I had an amazing time at both Summer's End and The Peel, and they were great gigs.

But, even from some crumnmy youtube vids, that did look like that was on another level, and I don't just mean Nick, far from it - it's obvious they'd rehearsed enough to do the music justice! I really hope they get a chance to do a headline tour some time so they can keep this momentum going!

We must do it again soon.  :D

I should point out btw, that this is going to be a live CD, not a DVD. The accompanying DVD is a 56 minute doc about "the making of fRosTfEst". Just a bit of fluff really, but it certainly has it's endearing moments.  ;)

I still don't know what to call the CD so if anybody has any suggestions, I'm all ears.

Quote from: "Jem"I should point out btw, that this is going to be a live CD, not a DVD. The accompanying DVD is a 56 minute doc about "the making of fRosTfEst". Just a bit of fluff really, but it certainly has it's endearing moments.  ;)

Ah well, that's oddly good to hear. I mean, such is the quality of the YouTube footage very kindly uploaded for those of us who remained on this side of the Sargasso Sea (and which has all now been downloaded to my laptop in full HD for posterity, thankyouverymuch), I was beginning to feel slightly guilty that I might not even need to buy the DVD.

As if

Very enjoyable it must've been for all concerned, though: we can hope for some of the new stuff over here at the DT gigs (DDD/FD please), but when's the next full 2 hour gig in Earl Grey land, eh?!

Oh, and as for NdV, jolly well done that man. I'm beginning to get very confused about all of Frost*'s drummers, mind you: can we hope to see all three playing at a gig one day a la Phil Collins and Chester Thompson?

I was in the 2nd row at ROSFest and saw the excellent performance of Frost*. I am glad that they filmed it because it was a great show!

I'm not really a Frostie (there are so many other bands that also deserve my attention) but I registered to the forum to be able to post the following link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxb-7QkdIxU&fmt=22 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxb-7QkdIxU&fmt=22)

Apologies for the bad sound quality, the camcorder's mike obviously could not handle the volume. However, I shot in HD so aside from that stupid microphone that was in the way, the video quality of Jem's magic is pretty good.

Enjoy!

Karel

video to trade or donate to unfortunate souls  who didn't make the show ;)

Done (it shows that I'm not a real Frosty).

I'll be happy to upload my raw HD footage somewhere for overdubs and repost it the corrected version - just let me know where.

(And if you guys ever generate a DVD with my footage on it, please send me a copy!)

As Pedro suggests above if you can upload to rapidshare or yousendit or somewhere similar and provide the link I'll happily attempt the overdub, although saying that the quality on  the youtube hd clip is really good so I could just download that and use it to save you having to upload the original file again

According to Jem's latest twitters, some of the vocals on Falling Down were pretty bad.  But I guess when you're in the audience and enjoying the show it probably didn't register as much.

It's interesting what you "forgive" when you go to see a band live....part of the whole risky biz of live music I guess.
I suppose this is why some bands dislike bootleg recordings and YouTubes so much, people could make lasting like/dislike decisions based on one shonky vocal in a 30 second clip. The answer is don't do shonky vocals! ;)

Looking forward to hearing the recordings.

I think when your at a gig if there are some dodgy vocals or whatever you dont take too much notice because your into the moment and things just move on to the next big one, if that makes any sense.

Well, I was there and I certainly spotted the off harmony, but it didn't deter from the experience.  As I understand it, the sound on stage was far from ideal (it rarely is).  It only posed a problem because the show was being recorded.  But between the sheer love of the music and the honor of seeing it live, nothing was going to wipe the stupid grin off my face.

The vocals on the falling down chorus were (i believe) what he was referring to that didnt sound good. But honestly, i couldn't have cared less. I mean for fucks sake I was watching FALLING DOWN being played live. Just cannot be bad in any way. And Jem was the man with that headset mic, that was the shit.
