Title: RWA - Fall (free download): Frosties collab tune
Post by: RWA on November 06, 2009, 01:33:07 PM
Hi ho!  :D

New RWA track. This one is called "FALL".
Lot's of gits and drums; barely any keys. Except for the bass part.

LINK! (//http://www.box.net/shared/irf4nv8eba)

Enjoy!
Or not!  ;)

Cheers,

Ron

ps: if anyone wants to do vocals to this track; be my guest!

Quote from: "eponymous"Awesome Ron!  Thanks for sharing!  Some of the guitar strikes me as very Jamie West-Oram-ish -- in a VERY good way!
Well, he's one of my hero's! So there you go.  8-)

Thanks for the comment.  :)

now if anybody wants to write some lyrics, I'd give a go at singing something....

Rock instrumentals always make me want to write lyrics.  The one exception is LTE's "When the Water Breaks," which merely made me want to make an elaborate "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex"-inspired CGI video about sperm ships racing to fertilize the egg...

I've shared too much again.

That's how collabs start and love babies are born eventually! Hooray!  :D

You guys work something out, K? I'll include any vocal contribution (by anyone for that matter) in the original mix.
Just be aware that I can turn anyone into a raving midget. Vocal wise that is.  ;)

I've only ever heard Rog sing opera (which made my jaw drop, btw), so I'm uncertain what his prog rock vocal would sound like.  I'm all for stringing some words together if you're onboard.

So, what does the title "Fall" refer to?  Autumn?  Gravity?  Psychological or moral descent? Acronym for "Frosties Are Lovely Loons"? Some combination?

Autumn! Because............................................ it is.
Never mind the title. When I have to save a project in Cubase I give myself 10 seconds to come up with a title.
Obviously I wasn't extremely inspired this time.

Look, I don't really care for titles when it comes to instrumentals. So..... rename it if that what it takes. You have my blessing. If and when it comes together I'll mix it again and release under the artist name "Frosties". Or "Frostastic". Or "Frostatlantic".

And it could use a proper bass part as well. There's the synth sub bass thing going on which suits the track I guess but if a bass player wants to jump in, well, jump in.

And cowbell. The track doesn't have any cowbell I just realize. Hmmmm.......
Anyways. I think a Cubase project can handle 128 tracks at a time. After that I have to do sub mixes.  ;)

Sounds really cool! Good drumming!

I am missing a certain melody/structure throughout the song though. That's where some vocals could really shine. :)

So, what's your preference to work from, Rog?  This is new to me, so I don't know what you'd need to proceed.

 lyric sheet only (for you to interpret)
 suggested time cues for each line
 actual notes to be sung (note: writing music on staff paper isn't among my talents)

And do you have any non-operatic vocal samples of yourself I can listen to to help me write with your voice in mind?

I'm liking this track...and I have no idea how it goes yet!   :D

I do get a very strong impression that there could be sampled speech in the quieter bit in the middle but that could be my over-active cliché gland, obviously.

There is a flavour of GC in there (of course, its Daddy is one of the two Daddies of GC) so I can't help hearing the 'Across The Line' sound being applied to it.

I wish I had time to play with adding melody, words and a keyboard solo (yes, I heard one of those in there too) but I am already over-committed to things as it is.

I look forward to hearing what comes of this and I thank the might Ron for donating his brain-child to the experiment.  :)

I do realize that's it's a bit of a weird track. The first half sounds like autistic stair climbing; one step down, two steps up, one step down, 2 steps up. Then it breaks down half way into something completely different.

Experts would say this track is kinda weird and goes all over the place. Fortunately there's a scapegoat term for this: PROG!
Title: Re: RWA - Fall (free download): Frosties collab project?!?!
Post by: Pedro on November 10, 2009, 12:29:15 PM
LOL

I've been trying to work out the structure and form of it all.
I count 192 bars in total; the first 119 in something like 7/4 or 7/8 (never sure how to tell the diffeence) and the remainder in 3/4 or 6/8 (or whatever).
So the first two thirds are in prog time, the last third in waltz time.  :D

I have a sort of map drawn up. I think it nearly all falls into chunks that are multiples of 8 bars; there's like a three bar lead-in and an extra four bar bit (at about 02:16).

I'm trying to give names to the chunks at the moment (silly names like "RushLikeWithJoeWalsh'sLife'sBeenGoodChords") but while there are recurring structures it hasn't revealed obvious verse/chorus sections yet - and this is the bit that always impresses and confounds me....
Clever people like Ron comes up with this kind of irregular, asymmetrical but perfect framework that will clearly form the basis of a great prog track. Then, somehow, somebody adds melody and lyrics to it in such a way that it ends up sounding "right". How the hell do they do it?
Title: Re: RWA - Fall (free download): Frosties collab project?!?!
Post by: gr8gonzo on November 10, 2009, 01:39:21 PM
I was counting 7/8 when I suddenly sneezed and began counting 13/16.  I did the dog's head cocked to the side bit, then remembered I'm just writing words.  Roger can figure out where to put 'em!  :D

I actually have come up with a lyrical concept I think is good and unique - something that seems both pop and prog, yet is neither.  Anyone for Thousandshire*?

* no, it's not really that

And you're correct sir. First half = 7/8 (prog!) Second half = 3/4 (waltz)

So, is that Superior Drummer 2.0 on that track, Ron?

I'm pondering buying it with the Latin Percussion add-on but I've found that you can save about 10% of the price by buying EZDrummer bundled with the Latin add-on and then buying the cross-grade to SD2.0. Daft really - buy three boxes for less than the price of two but end up with exactly the same product!

it's going to take some major small talk to cover the time between now and Thanksgiving!

Yes it's SD2 and yes, package and/or upgrade pricing can be a bit weird. It pays to shop around. I got DFHS from a UK shop and then got the upgrade to SD2 from a German shop. Saved me big bucks.

Sorry; just managed to have a listen: very good.

But unless I'm missing something, it's shagadelic, rather than shackadelic, right? Makes all the difference to an Englishman. An Englishwoman might see it the other way around, mind you, preferring someone who can provide a roof over her head to a good roll in the hay ...   :D

Gosh, we're really spoilt for choice here, what with Pedro's offers of a lovely dress (is that one each, Pedders, or one for Nellie and I to share?) and TA's offers of a roof over our heads or a roll in the hay (again, is that one each, TA, or one to share?)

It'll take a while to reach a decision on this one, I think.

Ah, so you're a bit of a Steve Howe on vocals, then, RH? I saw him with his trio in Cambridge on Tuesday evening - an excellent gig, made all the better by him not singing at all. The time before when I saw him, he brutally murdered a chunk of Close To The Edge. The whole audience was wincing.

LOL Howe's solo LPs were the same. Plenty of others similarly 'gifted' when it comes to attempting their own lead vox including Tony Banks, Steve Hackett & Rick Wakeman. In most cases they got in others who did far better....

Teenage Genesis fanboy that I was at the time, I eagerly rushed out to buy Banks' The Fugitive, which left me pleading "Why, Tony? Why?!", and appreciating that the ability to carry a tune does not a lead singist make.
Similar situation with Rutherford's Acting Very Strange (thank Evans he found Paul Carrack, eh?).

But I'd like to think I sound better than Steve Howe......

Well then... the instrumental..... will stay instrumental!  ;)

Thanks Bokkie for the fab bass track. Kinda weird really how this came about. We live 30 km from each other but we've never met or spoken so far. We must do something about that soon.

I'm still willing to try it. I haven't recorded vocals in forever, so I'm a bit rusty, but I'll see if I can make anything listenable (vocally) for human consumption. It may end up rubbish, but I won't know until I try.

Excellent!
And no worries... I have autotune!  :P

Wow this is fab!

The guitar solo at 5:30 makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside  :D

I don't know what it is between the first and second versions (maybe slightly different EQ'ing) but the first version sounds a little fuller and richer. Saying that I am listening to them on tinny headphones I bought from Aldi   so that might have something to do with it.

I don't know if it needs keys or not but I'm hearing in my head some sord of subtle keyboard line in the background, maybe a little solo or two to compliment the guitar.

I know I don't have much credibility here yet (because I don't have any credibility at all! I make dentures for a living, not music!) but that's just a little input from a Frostie  ;)

Can't wait to hear the finished thing!

I've contemplated adding a keyboard track, but I don't want to play anything that will take away from the guitar and bass. I agree it could use an underlying...something... to make it sound a little fuller/warmer. Nothing busy, though.

Don't be silly! Although we do prefer silly around here........
Thanks for yer input. Seems Gonzo "heard" keyboards in his head as well. Oh, and the only difference between version 1 and 2 is version 2 has Bokkie's bass part in it. Version 1 only has some synth bass.

I'll bet 114 of those edits was to make sure the colours were coordinated.

Ah well like I said these aren't exactly Senheiser headphones I'm using right now so it's probably that.  :)

I'll bet 112 of them were Pedro.

Pedro: Nah! I only do that when the grammar check alarm goes off! ;)
