I want to buy another Voyager plus every single thing that Dave Smith makes. But I can't.
It's deeply frustrating.
There, I've said it. I feel slightly better. Thank you.
"Welcome Jem and thank you for sharing."
There is a polite ripple of applause from the ragged collection of fellow sufferers who quickly return to leafing through old copies of Sound On Sound magazine.
The annoyingly calm voice of the "facilitator" breaks the silence again.
"So, who'd like to go next....anyone....?"
Er... my name is Catherine and I covet a Rickenbacker bass...
"Welcome Catherine....come on, people."
Another ripple of applause. It sounds like someone mutters "pah, it's the mellotron of basses" but no-one owns up to saying it.
"Is it just a single neck version you desire or are we talking about the kind of thing you'd have to go to a hardcore prog-dealer for?"
The room falls silent and all eyes turn to Catherine....
Don't mind me I'm just standing casually outside the gear lust meeting waiting for them to leave I assure you I will not be whispering "anyone want to buy a barely used Ibanez RG470 in Jewel Blue"
My name is EvilDragon, and I really, REALLY wish myself:
Waldorf Blofeld Keyboard
Waldorf Q+
Waldorf Wave (!)
DSI Evolver Poly Keyboard + Evolver Poly Rack (which are discontinued ;_;)
Alesis Andromeda
Kurzweil PC3K (or the next K series, whatever :P)
Korg OASYS
GAS is terrible disease.
There is a brief pause during which most of the group in the room look at each other and nod their approval of this latest admission....it's a good list. Even the facilitator is impressed but quickly rises to his feet, leading the applause.
"Welcome ED, and you're right, GAS can be bad, particularly when you allow it to build up. I mean, the Oasys is healing-edge tech now but it's still high on many people's lists."
He points in the direction of some posters on the wall showing several celebrity sufferers, including one of an intense looking bald man with a goatee, gurning over an Oasys keyboard.
"But most of us can't afford such indulgences."
Suddenly aware of a figure standing just outside, he raises his voice.
"Please....come in and join us!"
What-ho good pea poles! I bring warm blankets and hob-nobs for all. I've been able to satisfy my gear lust of late by means of purchasing a red standard Fender Stratocaster. Oh, how it sings! Too bad the poor girl is still nameless.
My current primary persisting problem is having the patience to wait for opportune moments to arrive in which I can buy desired gear. For instance, within the next few months, at some point I will finally arrive within aquiring distance of one of Lord Roland's splendiforous looking Fantom X6 computerised music making board. But... this time is still far away... the time does drag... for so... long...
...Nah, bugger this. I'm off t' Roland website to browse the images and videos. Cheerio.
Oh yeah, and a copy of Pro Tools and a new computer wouldn't go amiss.
Hi, my name is Gandalf and I desperately long for:
Roland V-Synth GT
Roland Fantom G6
Hammond B3
Moog Taurus
...and more!
That's pretty much my dream keyboard set-up, Gandalf. I am now going to cry into my empty bank account.
Quote from: "Mouse"That's pretty much my dream keyboard set-up, Gandalf. I am now going to cry into my empty bank account.
That's what I'm doing too, dear Mouse! But fear not! Money will come to our bank accounts... somehow!
Eh heh <clears throat> my name is Giles and despite owning 1 Warwick Thumb, would really like another one (preferably completely white with blue leds and white hardware).
Oh and a big purple coloured pimp hat to wear when I play it.
Wow, I do feel better...just need to sort out all my other issues now!
Gear lust is a subject I know nothing about
Actually, I've changed my mind. What I really want is a Gibson guitar like this one (//http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89Kz8Nxb-Bg), plus, of course, a cage full of zebra finches and a handful of twigs.
*coughs quietly*
See I'm pretty content with everything I have. If anything, I'd like a V Synth, of any variety, but all in all I'm pretty content thus far...
Though the Virus is definitely contagious.
At this point the facilitator looked momentarily panicked. "Oh crap", he thought to himself, "this one knows it's a virus. How long 'til they realise that sitting in this group can't actually help them and that their subs are really paying for my gear lust? Better distract them...."
"Ok, erm, let's take a break for coffee....help yourselves to biscuits....."
Not liking 98% of existing strats out there I embarked on building my own.
That was a month ago now I've got parts showing up every few days and boxes
are stacking up throughout my house. My local Lowes hardware store(s) know me
by name for coming in and buying tools.
Somehow I've ended up with a candy apple red and a black strat body
and EMG David Gilmour pickup set and now have parts for TWO guitars.
And thats this month. March and April will come a custom self made
12 string telecaster with a neck on special order from Warmouth.
It's becoming a mad mad obsession.
Whoa! This is impressive stuff.
What sort of start point are we talking about here? Blocks of wood or ready shaped/drilled/routed/fretted/etc. parts?
Also, not being a guitarist, what was it about the 49 Strats that you didn't like and what made the 50th one right?
On a slightly different note(!), I just noodle about on my guitar, not being able to play properly but I love picking out tunes and playing with chord shapes and different sounds (via a Variax/Pod combo).
Every guitar I've ever owned (all 3 of them!) seems to have had problems with the tuning of the G string (comedy gold, I know!); tuned perfectly when open it's sharp when fretted near the nut or when tuned perfectly when fretted it's flat when open.
Is this a problem with the nut alone? I read about compensation in the bridge for such things too. Do I need to pay Lex Luthier to fix it or is there anything else to try?
Ok, I just asked a serious question on the Frost* forum that included the words "nut", "fret" and "G-string". I think I need to go back to bed! :)
Quote from: "Pedro"Do I need to pay Lex Luthier to fix it or is there anything else to try?
Nah, he'll just turn it into a weapon to use against Superman.

I'd say if a single string is fretting sharp then it sounds like the nut slot (or nut) is cut too high, so when you fret the string it's pulling slightly sharp.
The bridge tweak you mention is 'intonation' and you can fix this easily by tuning the open string and then fretting the 12th fret, depending on whether it's sharp or flat you move the bridge saddle backwards or forwards. It's easiest if you do this with a tuner.
If the nut is too high, I'd suggest taking it to your local guitar tech (doesn't need to be a Lex Luthier), they'll have the tools to be able to sort that little problem out.
Weird that it's happened on all 3 guitars though...that's either bad luck or maybe your technique is pulling the string slightly sharp?
A decent setup can make a massive difference to how much you enjoy playing your instrument - so if you can afford it, take it somewhere and have it properly setup with a fret dress if required.
Apologies for the seriousness of this post.
Thanks GMan, pretty much what I thought.
It's always been a very slight effect. I'm trying to fret lighter but I'm not technically that good really.
I'll save up. :)
If I even start to write all the gear I want I will cry lol...
Stands up. Looks around the group, runs off to cry uncontrollably in the toilets. Only emerges after much convincing and "we all understand your pain" from other members and promises of tea and biscuits............
Pedro look no more! Earvana compensating nuts for guitars.

I have them on all of my electric and acoustic 6 strings. And YES they really do work!!
You can get the retro-fit model which does not require altering your instrument.
They come in all the popular sizes and widths for practically every guitar.....except 12 strings.
They do require a bit of filing of the string slots so if you're not handy with and don't
own a set of nut files then you'd want to take it to yer local repair man. Not sure if
they have a U.K. distributor or not yet. You can email them. Rik, the inventor and main tech
is great and willing to help anyone out.
You can play chords in any position and not have to retune, and it's dead on all the way
up the neck. Your saddles have to be re-adjusted but thats no big deal
MarkOneMusic mumbles to the room, barely audible...
I really need a Moog Little Phatty
And an Akai MPK88 controller
And I just got a quote for mastering from Abbey Road... How can I resist
Hi,
I'd like a Roland TD20KX V-Drum kit....
Does that make me bad or shallow ?
I like drums more than keyboards... I can't seem to hit those tiny black notes with my Vic Firth sticks.
Also... I'm embarrassed to go to dinner parties and out for drinks with my friends as I have a really bad case of..... Latency.
I need help.
Welcome Craig,
That's a Class A lust you've got there...it doesn't make you bad or shallow...it makes you a drummer (and I don't mean that makes you BOTH!) The latency might also be a clue but that could just be because the drummer is often behind the bass player. ;)
Welcome aboard. :)

If it does then I'm bad AND shallow.
*drools*Honestly I'd kill for something that was a) electronic, b) better than and c) bigger than the cheap Traps kit I practice on at the mo.
OK, so I wouldn't kill a person. Maybe a slug. Or a small mammal. Or Jon Prescott... oh, I already said slug didn't I...
Quote from: "RacingHippo"OK, so I wouldn't kill a person. Maybe.... a small mammal.
Where's Mouse? Anyone seen him?
Mouse?
You there, Mouse?
OK, Hippo, fess-up time- what did you do with the rodent?
-UPDATE-
I may have located him. Problems with the LHC electrical systems point to wiring damage made by small sharp teeth. The pointy-heads think 12.30pm is still potentially a go, however.
Quote from: "Geetar"I may have located him. Problems with the LHC electrical systems point to wiring damage made by small sharp teeth.
Ah no.
I believe the clue to the culprit there is in your very own sig, Mr Geetar...
Is it time for me to scarper again?
Er... my name is Catherine and I really, really want a Rickenbacker bass and also an iPhone...
Welcome Catherine. Take a number! :)
On the second row, a man is sitting sweating like a pig, trembling and shaking. He looks around the room, hardly making any eye contact with anyone. Than he gets up,shivering from withdrawal and shouts uncontrollably:
My name is Bokkie... Shocked by his own unstable voice he continues I am really craving for a M-audio 8in8out for my protools, a lovely new Gretsch kit with 6 toms and a 20 " kick accompanied with some sennheiser 421 mic's and some ribbon overheads. The people in the room are staring at him if there waiting for the clue of a somewhat dodgy musicians joke..Ok...ok..i would like one of those lathe's and make beautiful bowls. And when i'm at it...throw in a couple of japanese handsaws.
Quote from: "Pedro"Welcome Craig,

Erm... I feel even more ashamed now... I've already started on the the Class B "recreational use, not for distribution" TD6V, which has now lead me to my crystal -"TD-12"-meth habit .... I thought that was enough for any man, but then I started mixing with the wrong kids on the estate, and now I'm regularly using kits from VExpressions.. sometimes twice in a weekend.... I... can't help myself.
As for the latency.. well... I'm getting latency with my USB midi interfaces - Not even Audio... It's messing with my head man!
Maybe it's the cheap USB -> midi in/out lead connected to my Triton...
Maybe it's because My PC's USB Bus can't handle my Juno G, tascam US122Mk2 and the Triton on 3 different interfaces...
Maybe that last drumstick that caught my forehead during that 12 minute prog solo did more damage to my brain than the experts thought....
Anyway... Thanks for making me feel welcome...Does anyone else have the munchies now?
Quote from: "catherine"Er... my name is Catherine and I really, really want a Rickenbacker bass and also an iPhone...
Oooh - I'd like an iPhone too... but I'm worried my IT colleagues will think I've gone soft because it's prrrdy and shiny and you don't have to reboot it every 5 minutes.. They will make me sit with the web designers... and I don't have any Dunlop green flash shoes or G-Star Raw jeans.....Sorry.... over-sharing again....

sweet drums.
I've been wanting one of these: Tascam US-1641 (//http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/US1641/)
not really why I need it, but I only have two xlr inputs on my Lexicon Omega, and I'm itching for more. for all that recording that I'm not doing.... 8-)

Do you think he's like a "drum feeder"... just building his kit to such a size that he'll never get it out of the basement ?
Anyway Mr Hippo - I heard on twitter that you were off to make prog-esque noises in Manchester or something.... What kit were you using for that out of interest??

Should let RH answer really but this is so good we should see it here too. I'm pretty sure the kit was the one in the clip below.

Well played sir!
(LDP is Kino's "Losers Day Parade" by the way and the sound in the clip is not the original track)
Beat me to it, Pedders!
And thank you!
Yep, that's the kit. And me behind it.
It's an ancient (I bought it secondhand for £300 in 1990, and I suspect it was a good 10 years old then) Yamaha 9000 series; 8", 10", 12", 13" rack toms and a 16" floor. It originally had 2 22"x14" basses but one has permanent residence on a shelf in the garage as I use a double-pedal instead; less to lug around and less posey.
Cymbals are a mish-mash of Zildjian, Sabian, Paiste and Vibra.
A few years ago I invested in a Gibraltar rack to hang it all off, which makes set-up way quicker. And there's a set of 6/8/10 Rototototoms just for badness :)
The event is explained on the IB forum, here (//http://itbites.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3891).
Hopefully there'll be some video of it soon, and I'll find out if we really pulled off LDP as well as we thought we had...
Quote from: "Pedro"(LDP is Kino's "Losers Day Parade" by the way and the sound in the clip is not the original track)
S'right. It's our very own Flamadiddle's (//http://www.frost-music.co.uk/frosties/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=305) transcription into Guitar Pro 5, plus my dodgy vocals :) All recorded on my trusty Zoom R16 (simultaneously recording 7 mics - it's the dog's!)
Ooooh - so many nice toys!
I miss my rotos.. They're packed up in the garage with my Pearl Export kit....
I don't have a cube (but I'd like one, if that counts as gear lust?)
but I have entirely taken over a spare room wit my "boy music" things. Thank god for V-drums.

Awww, bless ya, Mouse.
Gman commented on "the Frostyness" of it. What better accolade could one desire?
Mind you, it was bloody freezing in the garage. Maybe he noticed the icy sheen forming on my cymbals.

Ditto. Enjoyed it a lot RH, makes me realise with my little set of pads that I'm nowhere near being anything like a drummer at all. So much talent to this old forum!! :D
I need East West Symphonic Choirs and Progue Chipsounds. Not want, need.
Prophet 5!!!! I MUST have one! REV 3.3 w/midi!! My Ensoniq Collection is almost Complete! Just Missing a Fizmo. Only SCI piece is The Six Trak which was my First Synth! Theres An Idea For a Thread Topic! What Was your First Synth? ;)
I had a P5 v3.3. I think P5's are the best looking keyboard ever made.
Mine had no midi though and cost me about 3 grand which was too much in hindsight. I got it from RL Music in Reading.
Initially I wanted to keep hold of it as a thing of beauty, but I felt guilty about not using it, so I sold it to a bloke in Brighton who also bought my Jupiter 8. I noticed that about 6 months later, he put the Prophet up for sale as well.
I'll probably get stapled to a burning horse for saying this, but when I had both that and a Prophet 08, I found I used the 08 virtually all the time.
I've now got a Tetr4 which is just as good although not remotely sexy.
I am, however, LOVING my Nord Wave. :D
Yeah, Ive seen you with your Nord Wave in some updates. What A Brilliant Idea for a Board. That Vid of you having tuning issues with the P5 is Hysterical. I Cant believe you sold the JP-8!! I completely agree with the sexiness of the P5 but the JP-8 I always thought was a close tie! Plus the Value or should I say "The Gear Slutz" Value of the JP-8 is Ridiculous!! Hope you got at least $6k for your Jupe!!!
