Essentially, it's dead chicken, radio show, Frost*ie love, Frost* 3 (Dolby model variation), USA 2012, 1976, Losers remix, band meeting tomorrow.

(I assume he meant 2012 for the US prog festivals, not 2011. With any luck, I'll be living close by at that time).

After having read that new blog post, I've come to the conclusion that Frost* is very much like the British weather: if you don't like it now, just wait a few minutes and it will have changed.

And I mean that in the best possible way, of course  :D  Never a dull day in the World of Godfrey ...

(Hello from Southern California, by the way, where I managed to get a nice sunburn on a completely overcast day spent in SeaWorld with the kiddies ...  :? )

All good stuff very exciting indeed but i was just wondering has dec left the band or is he merely on a sabbatical and if so will he be on the new c.d ?

The tag line was well chosen give it's the only possible response to all that... (well, not the only one obviously, but most other are probably best not committed to digital print :D)

I think the situation is that Dec is on leave, as it were, for the rest of the year so that he can concentrate on his solo work (which sounds splendid from what I've heard), but he can return to the fold after that. That's how I understand it, but someone please correct that if it's off target.

Nice!

So would I be correct in thinking that the stuff being released online won't be on the album, and vice versa?

Mr. Godfrey my deepest thanks to you for getting your music out there. You really are a musical hero and genius in my eyes. I'm a drummer first but you have opened my eyes to the world of synth, song writing and British humour. I really look forward to seeing the band in December and hearing the new stuff.

Gushing ceased.

Rawk commence.

That's the impression that I got. But, like the Thomas Dolby album, the extra tracks are still part of the overall concept.

Some days you're the statue, some days you're the pigeon.  However, this is a pigeon / good day! Firstly, have been offered my temporary promoted post on a permanent basis  :D and now read all this Frost*ie goodness!  8-)

Laughed at TA's comments re- turn-around but F3 being released on IO is fine by me.  Individual downloads are great, more immediate and allow freedom from commercial constraints.... but I'm afraid I don't think it beats having an actual official CD release.  So best of both worlds - result!  ;)

PS - sorry about the chicken... (hope it wasn't the one in Bert's avatar)  :|

Yay! A return to something closer to Milliontown but with a twist isn't bad in my book. Mind you, I really liked EIMA (especially the production, which to me sounds clearer and crisper than Milliontown), so I'm hoping for a third album that takes a third direction (but perhaps with a bit more of the Tony Banks-ish keyboard techniques, lyrically phrased instrumental sections, and uplifting vibe of Milliontown). But anthing Jem and the others want to commit to posterity is fine by me.

The Classic Rock Presents Prog ELP tribute CD promises to be a stonker. Not just "Fanfare", but also cover versions by Panic Room, Magenta ("Lucky man"), Alan Reed ("C'est la vie"), and I imagine a few more I've not heard the rumours about. I can't wait for 7July. :-)

Mind you, it could be absurd. Mostly Autumn doing "Karn Evil 9", IQ's "I believe in Father Christmas", The Reasoning playing "Toccata", Marillion performing "The Endless Enigma", The Enid's take on "Honky Tonk Train Blues", and Opeth rattling through "Jerusalem". Actually, that last one could work...

All good news .. can't wait to hear Fanfare  :D

It reads like Jem's interest in getting Frost back out there has become reinvigorated (hoosah!)..the effect of Craig joining?

I am intrigued by the live shows though ... without Dec playing, who is going to sing his parts from EIMA .. certainly not Jem or JM ?

Utilisation of a cunning stunt singer ? (to steal a Kenny Everett phrase)  :D
Title: Re: Nice! (new blog post)
Post by: gr8gonzo on June 30, 2010, 01:12:38 PM
I've pondered about that, too (performing Dec vocals without Dec). I have complete faith in Jem's vocals, despite criticism he's received in the past. Hearing him live just solidified that for me. In the studio, he has a tendency to mask his vocals with effects and bury them in the mix, which I find unnecessary. The guy can sing - and very well, at that. There are tons of prog bands out there with great musicianship and crap vocals; Frost* isn't one of them.

I don't know what Craig and Nathan's vocal abilities are, but unless they've sung in a Rush tribute band, I imagine the weight is Jem's to carry. First idea that comes to mind is reworking the vocal and/or the arrangement to suit Jem's range. This may work well in parts, but not in others. I think about all the aging bands that change their songs to another key because they can't hit the high notes anymore. It's okay, but mostly makes everything sound slow, flat and sad.

Another idea is to harmonize Dec's vocal parts. If no one's got a strong falsetto, a harmonizer on Jem's vocal would do the trick. It sure sounded cool on TPE. I'm no engineer, but is there a way to set it up so only the harmony effect is heard and not the source vocal? Would that sound awful enough to warrant having Jem wear a red sweater with a big letter A on it?

Of course, an occasional sample of Dec's vocal would be welcome/awesome.

LMAO! You lot!... :D

Dec's having a Frost-rest. Destroy All Monsters is, I think, the start of great great things for Dec. We spoke earlier this week and he's already several tracks into the next album. I was gobsmacked! I wish I had that kind of stamina!

Seriously though, as you will know from his fine contribution to TDL, he's still very much a mighty voice to be heard in the Frostiverse so the door is never locked, put it that way.  :D

There'll certainly be the intention of that in there, yes. Milliontown was "up" and shiny, EIMA was deliberately dark and keyboard-lite. The latter won us a whole new younger, non prog audience, especially in the USA which was very important. It got us the attention of bands like Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree. F*3 will put the keys and sound design firmly back in the spotlight, but hopefully still keep that younger audience whilst re-igniting the original Milliontown audience. The aim is to sell more records than the last two combined thus assuring the future of the band. This is make or break time basically. But in a good way.  :D

Do you think that if you kept radically changing tack from album to album that it would be difficult to retain a core audience?
Not a rhetorical question, you obviously know more about this stuff than I...

It sounds like F*3 will be a sort of middle ground, hopefully retaining many of the EIMA fans, while reclaiming MTown fans. Kind of like what would happen if Fish and Steve Hogarth both sang on the next Marillion album.

I think if you didn't change because you were afraid of losing an audience you're effectively writing songs to keep the fans happy and that's never a good idea. That said, just changing tack for the sake of it would be equally counterproductive. I think successive albums tend to be responses to what went before it. I listened to Milliontown and went "Gah! Too flowery and fiddly" so EIMA was darker and simpler. I listen now to EIMA and go "Gah! Too serious" so this next one will be a response to that.

Just how can it be possible to sing and play drums at the same time?
That's got to be about 1000000 times worse than simul-headpat+stomach-rubbing.

Nah, so long as the rhythm of what you're singing isn't counter to what you're playing, it's only about 100 times as hard. And easily achievable once you've got your muscle-memory programmed with what you should be playing. I've been doing it with cheesey rock covers for donkeys' years.
Of course, in the case of anything to do with Frost* you can multiply that by at least 10,000

However, a fella as talented as Blunders can probably play drums, sing AND simul-headpat+stomach-rub. Whilst eating a hob-nob.

That's interesting – I must have my brain wired differently to Tricky.

I can drum and talk. I wouldn't claim to be able to sing at the best of times, but thankfully without a mic, nobody can hear me singing along at the back. I don't find it difficult at all (unless there's a particularly complex bit I need to play)...

However!!!

I can play guitar at a reasonable level, but I cannot sing and play guitar at the same time. Like... At all!!!

I've never understood those that can do it, especially when they're playing some really complicated bit of guitar work and singing a totally different rhythm to what's being strummed/picked.

Having been to a few of Blunders 'clinic' appearances (that's drum clinics, oooohh matron) I'll vouch for him being able to do a very, very mad version of the stomach rub/head pat thing based on trying to show people how to play in different time signatures with each limb!!!!!!!

Again, from Blunders previous work, I can't see that sort of thing catching him out too much - he did this thing with around 50 tv themes and him playing different time signatures and speeding up/slowing down and it was brilliant.

I like the different aspects of both Dec's and Jem's vocals. Dec may well handle some of the vocal duties on F*3, but I don't anticipate the album being as Dec heavy as EIMA. Jem likes to tinker with the good ship Frost*ington. I half expect him to sample his eldest son's voice saying various things, then piecing phrases together (backed by sheep and lawnmowers, naturally).

I'm very happy listening to either Frost* album, so I'm not really to bothered about the general direction of this next release :D .

On the subject of vocals, I think Jem is a very underrated singer, and should get a lot more respect for his vocal abilities ;)
