Title: "Jem Godfrey from The Enid"!
Post by: Pedro on July 15, 2010, 01:28:00 AM
Just listening to a Welsh radio station (GTFM) interview with Christina Booth about her solo album.
The DJ (Andy Fox) introduced the piece by describing the album and said "there's a remix by Jem Godfrey from The Enid"!

Let this be a lesson to all children. Do your homework, do your research, otherwise you'll look like a fool.

I'm sure The Enid would sound quite different with Jem at the helm.  ;)

Well, with some embarrassment, I'll admit that I have wondered whether there was some relation, if only because Godfrey isn't exactly a common name and prog rock isn't exactly a common pursuit  ;)

That said, given well-documented Robert John Godfrey's procreational (or not) predilections, I was at least able to rule out him being Jem's dad ...  :)

God-frey-bid a DJ would actually do some research.

I've always had a sort of love-hate relationship with The Enid, since before I'd even heard of them.
This would be on account of them having the same name as my mother.

The first - and only - time I saw them was in '85 at University. I was also responsible for designing and operating the lights for the show...
I came away from that gig secure in the opinion that all things called Enid are impossible to comprehend.

I saw them once and once only too, possibly the Edinburgh Playhouse, possibly the 1980s. All very pretty in places and I can handle the bombast, but ultimately, there are too many derivative references to other, much greater composers that I find it hard to warm to The Enid for very long.

To be honest, I see parallels to ELP in that; never a great favourite. Rather than listen to the derivative, why not just go straight to the source? I mean, as cute as it is, no-one ever thought than a Castrol GTX advert was a valid substitute for Mahler's 7th  ;)

Congrats in anticipation!! I just passed the 700 (at one stage I noted we were often level pegging it). Been ever so slack of late, although I do pop in quite frequently for a read. So goddam busy I still have not listened to TPE all the way through yet!!

Thanks, Brom: this may indeed be my Maryland moment ...  :D

Would've happened earlier if it wasn't for our three week hols in Cal-ee-fawn-eye-ay which, among many other great moments, included an exceedingly close encounter with one of nature's more magnificent (and highly endangered) denizens, the California condor. This one's a young 'un, but we must've seen about 15-20 of them in all, circling over the beautiful Big Sur coastline, with this one flying alongside us for half a mile, about ten feet away

Thank you muchly, ma'am: now the long haul to Boaster  ;)

But of course, it ain't about the destination, it's all about the getting there, so I look forward to us all having much of interest (whether serious or utterly trivial) to discuss, debate, and pun about during the remainder of the year, ahead of the Islington Crimbo gig, where I hope to see many of you in person  :D
