Ahh, good timing! I'm trawling through the old blogs of Jem's at the moment, as I hadn't seen them previously - fantastic stuff, as expected. =P

A break for some other stuff is healthy, I reckon. Jem's writing is ALWAYS a good read, and his photos are pretty special too...

A lot of electronic bits and pieces have been creeping into Frost* recently and I've been really enjoying it. The drum and bass glitcy parts in TDL and the unreleased fanfare for example. I'm also into creating electronic music so I'm looking forward to hearing what Jem has to offer.
Sounds like exciting new times. I do hope Frost* comes back eventually though!

That pretty much seals the deal for me.....nothing to see here anymore. I won't be following this circus act any longer. Jem is an infinitely talented, albiet obviously extremely confused soul....and it's exhausting trying to keep up. First he's planning this, and then that changes and onto something else, and his taste changes, and his plans change again, and the plans he planned on not changing change again........good grief......it's simply not worth it.
Brilliant stuff Frost was......but my guess is we have likely heard the last of that. I have seen this type of act before. I am not a believer in being a fan despite all the madness, no matter what kind of music, etc.... Electronica, Steam Punk, Prog, Pop, Rock, new studio/no new studio, new drummer...oops ANOTHER new drummer, land a great singer....ehh we don't need a singer, bloody brilliant keyboard....i just sold my brilliant keyboard...........this guy is just over the edge.

Sorry to hear that, you'll be missing out on a heck of a lot of great stuff! Frost* for me is one of very few rare instances of a 'progressive' band that

While the good ship Frost* can sometimes be an unpredictable vessell, I whole heartedly trust Jem to captain it, if you'll pardon the metaphor! I've not (knowingly) heard any of Jem's other work, but just 'cause it isn't Frost* shouldn't mean it's not worth trying out. We're also free to listen to other stuff for our prog fix if Frost* aren't currently on the go; that needn't imply and disloyalty to Frost*!
I've tonight downloaded a copy of Craig's "Dr oKtopUs" album "One" - now, it may not be my thing but I now trust Craig as a person and as a musicin so, even if at first it's new to my taste, I'm prepared to give it a chance and, who knows, it may grow on me and inspire me to explore new musical directions.
It seems that, after every hiatus or change in roster, Frost* come back better and stronger. If it means that we get a stonking new album in 2012 then I'll settle for that and try other things in the meantime.

Ahh...but when you start taking money for your "hobby", selling CD's concert tickets, DVD's, T-shirts, websites, blogs, etc.. it ceases being a hobby. All that it praised is also open to criticism. Being a fan does not lock you into loving every note, every lyric, every musical direction. There are those who will fawn over virtually every note Jem does just because it is Jem....and there are those who would never want to hear it a second time.....and then there is me somewhere in the middle. I happen to think Milliontown and EIMA have some of the most brilliant musical moments of any albums I have ever heard, and on the flip side, I think TDL was a train wreck. The train wreck doesn't deter me from hoping for better down the road.
It's really a shame that any criticism of an artist is met with such ire by the hardest core fans as if none is ever warranted. I have turned many friends on to Frost, have enjoyed countless long commutes dissecting both Frost albums, thoroughly enjoyed the blogs and this forum, and still consider myself a fan of Frost music....which to me is brilliant songs with layers of keys, guitar, vocals, and great lyrics.....and right or wrong, the blogs and personal ownership/involvement of Mr Godfrey. That's part of what has ALWAYS made Frost different and very Frost.
OK.....so I just read Jem's most recent blog entry.......and it certainly puts a little more perspective to things for sure. We all make decisions in life we regret, and sometimes it is easy to lose sight of the fact that there is personal side to things too. Frost aside, I hope Jem finds some peace in the New Year.

What makes the whole Godfrey / Frost experience so different then any other is the fact that he is pretty much very open AND outspoken in what drives him. I am quite sure Frost is not a money making machine, and it would not surprise me in the least if it is actually a losing proposition financially.
You missed the point entirely......I am saying that as soon as you put it on the internet, sell product, promote your craft AND accept the praise for job well done, it also opens the field for criticism.
At the end of the day, Jem is entitled to take any direction he chooses, as are we in wether or not we wish to follow him. I also believe that forum members should be allowed to voice their feelings in a constructive manner.
Personally, I'm disappointed that there appears to be a Frost* hiatus. Hopefully, it will be only short term.

I wish Jem all the best in whatever he sinks his teeth into next, I just hope he doesn't shut down the Frost* site like he's done before. If it's costing him cash to keep this place up (which it probably is), and he decides to kill it off, I would like to offer my services to host the forum so we all still have a place to natter. I already host a couple of phpbb forums on my personal server. I'm sure RacingHippo is another chap in the know, too.
At the end of the day, Jem's just one man, and clearly a very busy one. I loved TDL and would totally disagree with Mick's description of a "train wreck", but that's totally his personal preference/opinion. I don't listen to any of Jem's pop output, lovely as it may be, 'cause it's just not my thing. You've gotta do what makes you happy. That goes for both musicians and fans alike.

Kind of upsetting to think Frost has (in part) been bringing Jem down. Good luck with the electronic stuff and be well.
Lets not forget it wasn't too long ago that jem posted on this very site saying he was going to give frost a bit of a swerve this year, but he also quite strongly emphasised this was not the end for frost and how much he loved it, i love my wife and kid very much but its nice to get a bit of time down the pub or over the footie on my own from time to time, it doesn't mean you don't want be with them anymore, it could be quite a good thing to have a rest from all things frost as it will make us appreciate it more when jem eventually returns to the fold, so lets not be too despondent I'm sure jems still got something in store for us some time in the future and if his past record of changing his mind is anything to go by it could be sooner than we all currently think. :D

I just read the blog and I don't think any of it has to do with Frost unless I missed something?
I think it has more to do with his domestic situation with having moved and not happy with
where he is. I can't say I blame him really. As I understood it, the plan for Frost was to do
little bits of music here and there whenever the inspiration and time was right. There is no
contract so Jem is free to do with as he wishes and I think the new business plan is smart.
He just spent weeks preparing for the recent shows and had a ton of day job work to get done
all the while having to deal with old man winter barreling down on the U.K. I think the man rightfully
deserves a much needed break from everything and when the dust settles he can find a new ground.
It seems Frost has probably taken a good portion of his time allotted to 'fun' stuff, and as fun as it may be
there is still a lot of work involved in making the world turn round. I'm sure it just has become
part of the machine lately.
A lot can happen over the next 12 months and I think we'll be hearing more new Frost* music
some time over the next year. Jem, if you're reading this, take care, enjoy the holidays,stay safe and
healthy enjoy what tickles your fancy! We're here because we love you and the entire Frost* experience
and we'll still be here.....unless the planet blows up or something :o

I find it all too easy to sympathise with the way Jem feels about his situation. After all, I moved my family, studio and remaining parent across an ocean nearly ten years ago. It cost me - in the end - a small fortune, and along with it, my entire business model; and it very nearly cost me my family too.
I learned that I should have stayed here in Europe after all, and been more relaxed about life and business; but I can never be the person who followed that particular path, so up I get and on I go. It was only a dream, and waking up was painful.
Now I feel like like one of my prototype guitars, re-glued, refinished and down to one pickup and a hardtail. But there's still a tune to be played. It will just maybe sound a bit more like Holdsworth than Rabin now - far more abstract, far more angst-ridden, far more liable to turn around and bite you; and definitely without the tight leather trousers.
So yes, nuts.

No camera stuff this time but..
CDs by Transatlantic (x2) (Ok, OK I'm late to this particular party... but its GREAT fun catching up!) and CDs by Camel - Moonmadness reissue plus bonus tracks, Tangerine Dream, ELP, Shostakovich (Composer, not a band! LOL) and a Return To Forever DVD which is brilliant! AND... best of all a Squeezebox Duet so I can now lounge around and stream all my fave tracks straight to my hifi from the comfort of my sofa and also tune into some great internet based prog, including our own Gr8Gonzo. All in all quite a proggy Christmas! :D

There will be an Autumn tour (more details in due course) and there will be new music. Still not sure about when or what or who or how it will arrive, but I'm as much on this journey as you.

Couple of interesting things in Jem's latest blog.
Totally agree with the John Barry comments. As a kid I had the soundtrack of The Black Hole and LOVED it. I always thought it was a better work than some of his acclaimed Bond soundtracks but who wants to admit to liking the music to a Disney cash-in on Star Wars? :oops: But now Jem's admitted it, guess I can too!
And a writing session with JM in prospect - fantastic. Hope they have fun - and manage to get something done in-between the inevitable messing about! :lol:

I think stalked is the wrong word. If you've done something that people love and you've reached out into the community by creating video reports, taking part in a forum, meeting everyone at gigs etc people are going to look forward to every little glimpse of Jem they can get. So no, there is no requirement for Jem to update us on everything but he's a funny sod and we all get excited from time to time.

I didn't mean that in a completely serious way. When I say "stalked" I mean that harmless fan-like behaviour can feel like it's closing in on you sometimes. From the way Jem talk it seems like he wants to keep Frost* a relatively small project, like an escape from his dayjob and all that, so when it gets big enough that people are waiting on updates and are constantly asking for new info, he may feel like it's getting out of hand and wants to put a little cap on it. We all have our hobbies and little side projects that help us get away from the stress of life, it's just unfortunate for Jem that he's really good at his. I could be totally wrong, but that's how I see it.

The magician at the centre of the controversy, Fu Yandong, denies he harms the fish. The trick has amazed audiences across China, appearing on one of the biggest shows of the year, China Central Television's New Year's Eve special. Magician's code Mr Fu takes six goldfish and releases them into a shallow tank. He somehow gets them to swim together. But instead of being praised, he has been criticised by more than 50 animal rights groups. She wants TV stations to drop the act from variety shows planned to mark the end of the Lunar New Year. I'm blowed if I can remember where I read this, but that section - My work cathedral etc - is called "Saltaire" and was (at least partly) inspired by a documentary that Our Jem saw about Sir Titus Salt, founder of Salt's Mill and the surrounding village, Saltaire (so called because it sits astride the river Aire).
Lovely place, not far from here. Pygmy Hippo has his piano lessons there.

If I recall correctly, he wandered off into a daydream - as his his wont - based on the premise that Sir T wasn't as benevolent as he seemed and all the while was grooming these workers for some nefarious porpoise.....

Nope RH, you are correct, I too recall such a tale - the interview does refer to 'The Apprentice''s influence as being 'loose'. Probably find that different things influenced different parts of the songs, and then something else tied them all together, thematically speaking!

That's the one. Got it via an Amazon seller for £1! Strange little book but oddly compelling. However, if you're expecting it to reflect the lyrics and narrative in Milliontown, you'll probably be disappointed.

Titus Salt, who now owned five textile mills in Bradford, was one of the few employers in the town who showed any concern for this problem. After much experimentation, Salt discovered that the Rodda Smoke Burner produced very little pollution. In 1842 he arranged for these burners to be used in all his factories. In 1848 Salt became mayor of Bradford. He tried hard to persuade the council to pass a by-law that would force all factory owners in the town to use these new smoke burners. The other factory owners in Bradford were opposed to the idea. Most of them refused to accept that the smoke produced by their factories was damaging people's health.

I believe that milliontown referred to Oxford, where the book is set, as the population of Oxford it around a million... or something... I may have dreampt that...
