Whilst his music wasn't always my cup of tea (but often was), I've always respected the fella.
A lot of people are going to miss him.

Gotta agree with RH. His voice was an acquired taste, but his music was usually sublime and from the heart. I have Grace & Danger and Glorious Fool (his Phil Collins period I think) in my LP cupboard and he was a part of the soundtrack to my life in the 80's, that for sure.
Agree too. Same feelings about the music.
Oh bloody hell, not another one! When I was about 17, a friend of mine did me a tape with a live version of "John Wayne" on that I've never been able to find again. That particular version, I think, is still in the top 5 favourite songs of all time for me. Even after all these years.

I had the pleasure of seeing John play twice.
First time in 1978 promoting the One World album (my favourite and has been a constant play from vinyl to ipod). He was backed by Danny Thomson on double bass. He walked on to the Leeds Uni stage with an acoustic dripping in bolted on pickups, wires streaming from it and the trade mark reefer stuck in the headstock. He sat down, plugged in and from that hacked acoustic and double bass came the most sublime music my 15 year old ears had ever heard, the bonus being it was delivered to the audience in quadraphonic sound, whooshing around the heads of all there from corner to corner. From the sounds of Bigg Muff to Certain Surprise plus others, and then finished on the dreamy sounds of Small Hours. It didn't matter that my friends Dad's car broke down on the journey back to Chesterfield I had just witnessed one of the most superb gigs that still makes me smile to this day remembering it.
The second time must have been around 1990 at the Leadmill in Sheffield. While this was a full band and completely electric John still had that vocal that was more instrument than voice.
