Title: Steven Wilson
Post by: Dena on February 13, 2009, 09:08:49 PM
Steven Wilson, vocalist/guitarist from Porcupine Tree, has released a solo album (as you probably know).

If you click on the following link //http://www.burningshed.com/store/kscope/freedownload/11/ and subscribe to updates (you can always unsubscribe at a later date) you'll get a free download of one of the tracks.  It's a corker - very PT-sounding.  My mate reliably informs me that this is the most "Tree" sounding track on the album.

Enjoy!   :)

Disturbing.
That Lasse Hoile needs to see a psychiatrist (or maybe it's all Steven Wilson's deranged ideas)
Conceivably I'm just too old for all this wierdness.

Still; its a cracking album  :D

I certainly agree that one or other or both of them need to have their head examined...although I should probably then join that queue, because I think the video is stunningly good.

Speaking of Wilson and knowing a lot of you guys like to tweak and play with songs, there is a remix contest for the track Abandoner  -->  HERE (//http://www.kscopemusic.com/stevenwilson/insurgentes/remix-competition.html)  <-- . Is anyone gonna try something with that?

I think Steve Wilson is a genius, and I think Insurgentes is a fantastic album.

However, am I the only one getting a bit weary of the Dungeness strangeness and deliberately wacko imagery of Lasse Hoile ? It's beginning to grate in the same way as the ubiquity of Anton Corbijn's stuff for U2, although thankfully, not in the same way as U2

For me anyhow...  :D

I think I prefer this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06JWDLTx4l0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06JWDLTx4l0)  :D

Thanks for bringing my attention to that one. It's my first attempt at a remix but I'm quite satisfied with the result. At least it's completely different from the original. Maybe I'll post the remix here at a later point in time...

To use a whole day of my holiday to travel up to London, just to get a CD signed and maybe babble incoherently at the man... or not?

Was that you there yesterday...I was about 4 from the front of the queue, in my Frost* hoodie and a Metallica tshirt - couldn't be doing with wearing a Porcupine Tree tshirt like everyone else lol

Was not quite sure I recognised you without the fan...

Not sure how well it went down when I asked the great man to sign a couple of Fish cds

I have this idea of Steven Wilson in my mind that he's a miserable, depressed man. Can someone please confirm that he's not like that in real life? That he's actually all smiles and happy and nice and such?

Ahhhh.... so that was you!! Yes, myself and Karin (Philadelphia) were there about halfway back in the queue. I was somewhat nervous about chatting to Mr S but I needn't have worried since he recognised her straightaway and that was that...

We did see a couple of Frost* hoodies and wondered who they might be!

I can confirm he is not miserable and grumpy - very nice man! I don't know why, but I also had the impression that he would be like that. Strange!

I should have said something to you - I will definitely recognise you next time, so there's no escaping now lol

I have met him twice now and both times have found him very easy to talk with, and I enjoy his sense of humour.  My copy of Raingods With Zippos was already signed by pretty much everyone else on the album after a signing session at the time it came out - when I asked him if he would sign it he replied with an obvious smile that he better had, seeing as how everyone else had.

I didn't make it to Cardiff yesterday.  After photographing a gig the previous night I opted for sorting out photos and having a lazy day at home

I'm rather dissapointed by this album. I love PT and Blackfield and I wasn't expecting the music to sound like that but I find it rather boring and awfully depressing. I can usually handle the "cheery" lyrics and vocals of PT and BF but this album wants me put an end to it all!

K, that's an overstatement. Let's just say this one isn't for me.  :)

Harmony Korine was the outstanding track for me...and loved most of the rest...hope he goes on to do some solo dates ...playing tracks from PT and BF ...that would be well worth the trip!

....but for now, I will eagerly await the posty arriving tomorrow to see if the ROABP Cd of PT's complete 75 minute performance from the Ilosaarirock festival in Finland arrives... rawk M/   :D

I purchased this album today and already knew it would be a smash hit with me.
I put it in on my way home from work and I'm really thrilled to hear this album
and it came just when I've been having a sh#tty week. I was surprised to find
it has the DVD-A disc with it as well.

Got the album this week. First listening had me thinking... this is the work of someone who is recording far too often. Plus it's very dark, moody and on the whole uninspiring. That was on the way into work. On the way home a second listen prompted a shift in the other direction. OK, there is some way to go, but the morning's plan to dump it into the lower regions of the CD racks has been put on hold.

Got tickets to the Hammersmith PT gig later this year, hopefully see some of you there?

I am going to the Hammersmith gig.  And Leeds, which is standing.  Thinking about Paris.

Fed up with them drip feeding the dates, though - I know it will make me book up more than I would if they all came out at once

I downloaded a few things by No-Man last night (Carolina Skeletons EP, Lighthouse and My Revenge On Seattle) after nearly a year of being hooked on an edited version of Truenorth. Absolutely superb! I've ordered Schoolyard Ghosts as well, which should be arriving in a week or two. Can't wait!  :D

Think I'll pick up a copy of Insurgents on Tuesday as well. I'm not that keen on Steven Wilson's more teenage angst-y/miserable grunge-style stuff (I'm not that big a fan of Fear Of A Blank Planet), but it's the general production of the album I'm interested in.

I like italics.  8-)

Schoolyard Ghosts is one of my two favourite No-Man albums, Flowermouth being the other one. SG just has this air of... I dunno, there's something so soft and peaceful yet haunting about it. Then throw in the occasional moment of musical insanity and voila.

I hope you like it! (:-D

I think liking it's already a given, I'm in love with Truenorth and I've only heard the Video Edit of Part 2! Flowermouth and Returning Jesus are now high on my list of stuff to buy.

That reminds me, I still need to have a look at ordering those two Tinyfish CDs...

Speaking of Schoolyard Ghosts, the two words I use to describe it to others are 'beautiful' and 'sweet'.

Oh come now, it's not Moving Pictures but it has it's moments surely! Doesn't it? Anyone?

...Please?

Oh yes, I thought Insurgents was pretty good. Nice to see a little bit of all of Wilson's influences appearing and not just the dark, heavy stuff. I still don't know whether or not to get tickets for Porcupine Tree in Leeds in October, as Deep Purple are touring the same month, there's Summer's End to consider and Marillion have yet to announce Autumn tour dates.

It does have its moments, but they're uncharacteristically few for Rush, I think...
I've seen DP twice and PT 15 times and I'd still go for PT... But I suppose with them being my favourite band I'm slightly biased. (:-P

I haven't, no. I was meant to in 2007 when they played Leeds, but the bastards in the college I was at then said it was absolutely essential I go in on the day I would've missed so that I could attend the gig.

Turns out what was "absolutely essential" was just a tutor telling me everything's fine on my course and that's it. It took less than five minutes. I missed PT playing Dark Matter live for that...

Well, Mouse, for me, PT are on fire at the moment...having seen them a few times now, ....Mr Wilson brings sheer quality to all he's touching..was at No-Man and Aviv Geffen gigs...so, I would suggest that the next tour will be one not to miss!  ...I'm already booked for the Hammo gig ;oD

Marillion, should be interesting if it's going to be the acoustic tour H was talking about on Rogues Gallery....

I am going to the PT Leeds gig - it's standing, so it was a must.

I agree with the other posts on here, and think it will be one heck of a tour...I have read that one part of the new album is a 55 minute track
