Title: New Frost Track
Post by: Jem on February 02, 2010, 07:15:47 PM
What-hey!

In just under 8 weeks, I shall be premiering a new Frost track!

To celebrate 10 years of that most excellent online bakery of all things prog, The Dividing Line, they're having a weekend of celebration on the 4th and 5th of April. I shall be performing the Esoteric version of Snowman and by way of a thank you and to mark the occasion, I've decided to write a new Frost track called...."The Dividing Line"! It's just such a total prog phrase that it would be churlish to not jump in with both feet. :D

I think with a title like that I need to make it fairly significant so expect some length and some girth. Ark ark...

Johnny M's up for playing on it so hopefully I can get the rest of the clan involved too. Think of it as like one of last year's Dr Who specials.  :D

I shall, of course, be commencing a Frost report.

Onwards!

Jx

After a long day at work, that's just the sort of excellent news I needed to hear - looking forward to it and thank you!  :D  8-)

Would it be churlish to mention that Genesis beat you to a prog song called The Dividing Line on the Calling All Stations album?  :P

AWESOME!  I just poured myself a beer and got a plate of some lasagna I made the other night.
Such delightful news to read whilst stuffing ones alchohol buzzed face.

We needn't ponder the fact that a FROST* song by the same name will actually be better.
In fact, I think genesis are actually copied FROST*

I truly believe the conspiracy that Mr. Banks and Mr. Rutherford have their own time machine and
went into the future to find a new song title and heard the live internet show. They heard this incredible band playing an amazing song and decided to "steal" the song title and bring it back
to the year 1997 and use it for their own lame composition.

Unfortunately they went too far forward and missed the time period when they found
the album sucked a**.

but thats just me, I could be wrong  ;)

Top news!!!!

And from memory 'the clan' for recording would be Jem, JM, Dec, Nathan and TBE (think it was 'live' work he semi-retired from!!!) ??
Or possibly not :?:

Hopefully that'll be us, yes. Andy's been very busy lately so he may or may not be up for it. If he's not, I'll be drum boy. Not a patch on TBE obviously, but I can play in 7/8 so it's not all bad.

Now I'm confused ... Is Alex out of the picture already? I thought he was going to be the live replacement for Andy, but couldn't he step in on the recording side as well, if Andy can't make it? Or did I miss a memo regarding Alex's status?

Not doubting your progulicious 7/8 licks for a second, Jem, but just trying to keep this all straight in my increasingly-aged brain (thank you, Catherine)  :?

In any case, spiffing news regarding the new track, of course ...  :D

Title: Re: New Frost Track
Post by: Jem on February 03, 2010, 02:09:16 PM

Right, Alex was due to stand in for the live gigs last summer. Andy said he was still fine for recording. However, he's a very busy boy at the moment so  I can't guarantee he'll be around for recording The Dividing Line. Alex was very busy last summer with Glastonbury and Squarepusher and so on and as a result was a bit patchy on being able to a) do the gigs and b) make any rehearsals so I told him not to worry about it and Andy filled in as a last favour for the Dream Theater shows. Alex got a big of a bag on about it so it was left at that. No hard feelings and good luck with the future.

Nathan King replaced John Jowitt last summer and is Frost's bass player.

JM and DB will be taking part in the new recordings as I hope will Nath.

I think the best way to view Frost is in a similar manner to Peter Gabriel's band. Or Zappa. There is freedom to add and subtract people every now and then as and when required, but it's not really a question of being in or out of the band, it's more to do with availability, suitability and time. Sometimes it's quicker to work on my own, sometimes only a couple of the chaps are required, sometimes it's the whole enchilada. Either way, Frost is more of a collective than a hard and fast set of the same humans. Sometimes, I'm not in it either!

Does that put everybody in the blinding glare of understandment?   :D

No, seriously, thanks for that update, Jem: very clear. I shall now think of Frost* as a hippy commune or a music-based kibbutz, rather than a band. Means it's only a matter of time before I get to play triangle on a song, right? :D

I've got a 7' single of me, playing glockenspiel, on a track featuring the one and only Johnny Morriss. I believe I'm playing triangle on the b-side of it.

To be consistent with the New Way With Music, I shall record just one note from my trusty triangle and send it to you by email to be used as a sample. After making my debut on Frost*'s next LP in fully multi-tracked, polyphonic, hypersonic mode, I can then be invited to the next gig to reprise my note live, and immediately retire after my singular moment of glory.

I can almost taste the champagne already!  :D

Anyone else want to join our burgeoning Frost* Triangle Synthesis, purveyors of fine notes to the world ... ? Twenty of us could surely pull off Hyperventilate ...  ;)

I think you'll find twas Jem who conceived of The Dividing Line, but mistakenly uttered the title to Banks and Rutherford whilst on a pocket sun/Tardis romp through the 90s.  And The Dividing Line took its name from Banks and Rutherford, ergo we've come full circle and Jem's kept the fabric of time from unraveling... again.

As I recall, Nick D'Virgilio played on a track or two on "Calling All Stations."  I may still have my copy somewherst.  But, now Nick's run off and joined the Cirque-us.  Hopefully, he won't be forced to wear anything frilly.

Majorly good progress tonight on The Dividing Line. TBE's agreed to drum it and I got up to about 6 minutes 30 of music today...and that's before the whole instrumental section that I've got planned goes in.

I might have to expand the predicted minutage. 12-15 minutes now??  :D

There is some properly cool stuff going in here. It's sort of like a Black Light Machine 2.

I dunno really, the old floodgates have opened at last. I'm writing lots of it in my head while still in bed first thing in the morning.

I sent a bit to Dec and he said -

"The song sounds huge bud, it's more Milliontown in it's feel. I can imagine this being a real show-stopper live."

I sent a bit to Mitchell who said -

"That sounds insane!! :-) I love the whole slightly unhinged sound to it all...right up my strasse!!!"

So I think we've got something pretty special cooking up here. I'm taking the sound into new waters yet again, but it's still deffo Frost. Mad mad Frost.

It's not a Frost year no, and I can't sell you TDL as it currently stands for reasons that will become abundantly clear in time.

However, as you say Pedders, seeing as I need to finish the EIMA b-sides too, I'm sure some sort of limited edition thingy could become a distinct possibility. Truth be told, I'm rather itching to do a few gigs later this year so maybe that could all tie in with the autumn or winter or summat.  :D This new song is so utterly and totally a perfect show opener that I rather feel it needs to be heard through a PA at some point.

That's a very good question, Jem, and to be honest, since I'm a new boy in town, I'm not sure. I do know it's a very popular prog place in the Netherlands and I do know we have a fair number of Dutch fans on here, but adding two and two together together to get to two hundred is a bit beyond my powers of prognostication (sorry, couldn't help it  8-) )

Hopefully some of the other locals will pitch in. You could also ask JJ and/or TBE, since I understand that IQ are very well favoured at Zoetermeer. Magenta are coming on May 1st as well, so might be worth a chat with Rob. In any case, I promise to buy at least four tickets, if my kids are allowed in as well as me and the missus.

(Oh, and just as a reminder: if you visit Zoetermeer, I'll do what I can to get you in one of our big spacecraft anechoic chambers at ESA  ;) )

Intriguing ... but again I say .. Hussah x 2  !

I've been calling the new track "The Dividing Line", trouble is, now the lyrics are starting to take shape, I think it actually needs to be called "Liars".

I'll have to get "the dividing line" into the lyrics by way of an apology.  ;)

Quote from: "catherine"The Dividing Liars?

Speaking of liars, I've just finished listening to Episode 50 of The European Perspective on The Dividing Line (catching up as fast as I can, Wilf, honest!  :D ), and there was this bloke called Jem Godfrey on there telling us that 2010 would be a Frost*-free year.

I'll forgive him this one time, mind  ;)

But hold on, what's this I see on The Dividing Line's web page?

QuoteMark your calendars. In April 2010 The Dividing Line will celebrate its 10th anniversary. To commemorate this awesome milestone in our history we will be presenting a very special event: a virtual Progressive Rock festival! Similar to the "Live & Interactive" broadcasts we have featured in the past, this event will consist of live performances by some of our favorite progressive rock artists. Each of the featured bands will play a full set from their respective locations while broadcasting to you via our server. The DLBN TEN REVOLUTIONS Virtual Festival will take place on April 3rd and 4th 2010, with 4 bands playing on each of the two days. Confirmed acts include:

IZZ . JEM GODFREY (FROST*) . THE TANGENT . BUSHWHACK
MAHOGANY FROG . SINGULARITY
and just confirmed, PORTAL

A full set, live? On your own, Jem, or with the rest of Frost*? When exactly?

I just googled "Liars" for images and found the most ghastly CD cover which I cannot post in a place like this. Be warned, not safe for work, young eyes, or indeed sanity. But I feel I must ask whether the new Frost* track contains "Slamin beats"...

If you really must see it, here it was. Edit - Link now removed for reasons of good taste and decency.

Of course, the only way I could know that for sure was if I had also done so

Catherine: for all that you felt that the image at the end of that link was beyond the pale and that we shouldn't look at it, you went to great lengths to persuade us (via the Br'er Rabbit "don't throw me in the briar patch" inverted strategy) that we should. Odd, no?  ;)

Ummm, that wasn't actually what I was aiming at, to be honest. I suspect most of us on here are more than old enough and broad-minded enough (we're prog fans, after all  :D ) to be able to handle such things without running to the hills screaming, accusing you of acts of turpitude.

I personally couldn't give a damn what consenting adults get up to in privacy, regardless of how many and of what gender(s) they are. Well, actually, in some cases, I could very well give a damn, but only because I might (theoretically, mind you) be interested in joining in.

Nope, it was more just my wicked curiosity, intrigued at your underlying motives / interests ...  ;)

I'll come clean, the as-yet un named guest is the fantabulous Tara Busch. I've asked if she'd mind giving a tremendously dramatic speech through a megaphone (I did say this track was bonkers   ). The track's off Tina Booth's new album although the actual version sounds nothing like that. I have done an "official" v2 remix that'll be a bonus track on the album and again, it sounds nothing like the MySpace one. The v2 remix was the last thing to be done in the old Cube, I literally finished it and started unplugging everything, so it'll always be a little spesh to me. Ah...

God how brilliant is that??

That's fab that is. I'd never been aware of it till now. I do love it when people embrace the weird and slightly disturbing. Marvellous.  :D

Perfect timing, in fact...

It is good, isn't it? I'm completely with you on the slightly disturbing bit: exactly what is she licking in several of those videos and who killed the puppies?

But actually you can take most of the credit for me finding out about it, since Tara Busch has been raving about it on her website which I got to via ... you  :D

Of course, you could just be denying all knowledge of it until now to put us off the track  ;)

Iamwhoiamwhoami - those in the know say that it's Goldfrapp.

Which is just as it should be.  Good old Alison.  :D

Yes, that one would make some sense if only because they have a new album coming out in a couple of weeks. Then again, the Godfrapp website would suggest something altogether less disturbing, music and imagery-wise, and the new song "Rocket" on their (official  ;) ) MySpace page is a million miles away from the wonderful weirdness that is iamamiwhoami. Is it all an elaborate bluff? Nah, I don't buy it: it can't be Goldfrapp.

One of the persistent rumours is that it's Christina Aguilera and/or Trent Reznor. If it was "and",  that would be seriously strange.

However, since the girl in the iamamiwhoami videos has very distinctive lower front teeth, there's some clue there, perhaps: front runner in the dental stakes is Lykke Li.

She gets my vote for the time being: music and general imagery is a better fit, IMHO, than Goldfrapp. Plus she's Swedish: all that snow and those trees in the video!

Jem, for streaming music purposes may I suggest http://www.reverbnation.com (http://www.reverbnation.com)

You can use a widget thingy and chuck it on the myspace page instead of the myspace player, and the quality is MUCH much better.

sorry if this has already been covered (16 page thread - I must pop here more often) but for musical ignoramus like myself, how does the Mouse thing work?  Do you credit The Streets or is it only if you were selling it there would be implications?  Think its great btw, prolly more cos I loved the great concept album that is A Grand don't come for free.

Also Deep Ocean is wonderful.

At least you're already there. I've still got it to look forward to.
