Title: What's your bestest Frost* gig?
Post by: Ash on June 19, 2010, 09:20:50 PM
Apologies to those who have not seen them live.

I'm not sure if this is what the "gigs" section is for but  :?:

So - what whas your bestest Frost* gig and why?

Out of the 3 Frost* gigs I've been to...
The Scala, Islington and Summer's End,
... probably the other one - i.e 'an esoteric evening'  8-) 'cos it was more like a bunch of mates just arseing around and having enormous fun.

(but Summer's End for the real Frostie gigs)

I've been to four, I think: Cardiff Point with Spock's, Summer's End, The Peel Christmas gig, and Southampton with DT.

The first was a support slot and can't really compete, even if it was very good.

The second was fabulous and the bouncing wooden floor as we all bopped along still sticks in my mind.

But the third was the best gig of any kind I've been to in donkey's years: brilliant music, brilliant atmosphere, and what a laugh ...  :D  Plus my wife was there too, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

(The fourth was a poor gig to my ears; the sound was atrocious. But it was nevertheless greatly enlivened by my having delurked and meeting a few fellow Frost*ies [BBS, Cynthia's Mallet, and DS among them, if I recall correctly], as well as having a brief chat with Jem ...)

The Peel Christmas gig will live with me for years; I'm certainly hoping that the Islington gig this coming Christmas can come even partly close ...

Peel Christmas was just ace, as were the two Esoterics for different reasons.

I also had the pleasure of the Summer's End chalet session, which wins a special award - not least for the most appalling yellow nylon ginham curtains ever to accompany a prog supergroup.

But it's always so tricky to separate the gigs from the surrounding larks...

So far, I've seen them at The Arches in Glasgow (supporting Spock's Beard), Summer's End, The Christmas Peel and supporting DT in Southampton.

It's probably easiest to say that the DT gig was the least good - poorest sound, too big a venue for the normal intimate Frost* gig and surrounded by DT fans who weren't interested.  And my car broke down on the way back!

More difficult to say which was my favourite. Glasgow was just brilliant.  Great crowd and venue and was right at the front.  They kicked off with a briliant version of Milliontown.  I caught most of a fantastic version of BLM on video
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKbNgbH2gaI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKbNgbH2gaI)
Only down side was as it was a support slot, it was too short!

Summer's End was a bit special, with it being a full set and it is probably the best I have seen the band play to date. Great atmosphere, surrounded by avid Frost*ies!

Christmas Peel was unique with the band clearly enjoying playing and having fun. I'll always remember the bizarre ritual BBS, Witchie, Gig Buddy and I shared with a rather 'relaxed' JM at the end!

Hopefully my favourite Frost* gig will be Manchester in December...  8-)

The Esoteric Evening was not only the best Frost*-ish gig I've been to, but one of the best I've ever been to ever. I have never laughed so much and been in the company of such good people. Fantastico! The only other two times were support slots (Spock's and DT, both in Leeds, but not at the same time) and really can't compare!

The Xmas gig at The Peel 2008. Simply glorious atmosphere. John Jowitt handing out little pin badges, biscuits on the bar (I think), and the brilliant guest vocalist on I Wish it Could Be Xmas Everyday.

Unforgettable. :)

As yet I've only seen 'em once, Southampton supporting Dream Theater, which was hampered by the sound being a bit sh1te all evening, and the 'blue lights only' debacle. Though it did make the moment when that guitar solo in BLM somehow cut through all the sweeter! The performance was superb even if we had to strain to hear it! DT weren't bad either..  :)

While pondering this I realised I've been rather lucky in terms of quantity and thus it's really hard to pick a winner but in order of preference....

1 Summer's End (close to perfection)
2 Peel Esoteric (joint best really)
3 Peel Christmas (such fun)
4 Rotherham supporting Galahad (you always remember your first..."good God he can play it!")
5 CRS BOTY Rotherham (BLM - Jem sings: #"I'm just the 2nd best keyboard player..." :) )
6Spock's @ Cardiff (cracking venue but only support)
7 DT @ Leeds (sound & crowd)
8 Spock's @ Leeds (iffy sound, sticky floor and angry Jem  )

As I'm on the other side of the pond, I've only had the one opportunity to see them at RoSFest, the performance many of you now have in the form of TPE, so you're well aware of its quality. From the intro to TFYS and Tenori On Snowman to NDV on drums and bvox... throw in the extra long set and it was a two hour feast for the ears.

There was so much more to it than the set, though.

There was:
- the gall of asking a 70 year old woman to keep her grandchildren overnight and to feed our cats
- the 5am drive to the airport
- the flying a thousand miles each way from Florida to Philly
- the car rental
- the Fort Washington Holiday Inn (where the band also stayed)
- the lunch stop at the massive mall in King of Prussia
- the scenic drive to Glenside
- the charm of the village and its shops
- the Keswick
- the meeting of many lovely Frost*ies including Roger, Cairn, Lord Cotters & Family, Jose (dtjoez), Mike Flavin, Mirror and leelustig
- the meet and greet, telling Nick I've seen him twice now, but have yet to see SB (they've never played in Florida)
- the temporary Frost*ie takeover of the meet and greet (sorry everyone behind us)
- the doubletake I got from Jem when I introduced myself
- the after gig dinner
- the lure of the after party winning out over my bloodshot eyes and exhaustion
- the not being able to get into the after party
- the Moo hug (how cool is that guy?)
- the nice long chat with Dec in the hotel lounge with cameo appearances by Jem

I only regret that we couldn't stay the whole weekend and enjoy more of the festival, particularly Touchstone. It was simply the finest gig experience I've ever had - to be able to enjoy the music of one of my favourite bands, meet them and THANK them for doing what they do - there's just no comparison.

A tough one - they all had their moments.

Started with La Scala supporting the Flower Kings - at that point we all thought that this was the LAST concert.  After Hyperventilate and BLM, Jem announces that "this next song is our last one - Milliontown!"  Sound wasn't great - JM's solos not high enough in the mix. Afterwards bought the CD and a Large Baseball shirt from Mr Merch Jowitt, then followed a Dutch guy with a silver pen around as he accosted all of the band in the bar and got them to sign our CDs.  Top night.

Supporting Spocks in Islington - arrived late in the middle of EIMA, so stuck near the back - JM's solos not high enough in the mix again but everyone had fun.  Spocks were good, but my old legs gave out before the encores.  Played the gig CD all the way home.

Christmas at the Peel - saw Jem throw his special Christmas hat with white pony tails to a guy down the front and winked at him - the first time I saw Pedro...  Brilliant atmosphere - standing just behind Cosmic Lawnmower as JM picked him out for the encore - breathed a sigh of relief.

Supporting DTs in Southampton - got there early and got down the front.  Sound didn't have time to distort before it got to me, so was excellent. They dashed through it very clinically but did the trick.  Gave up with the DTs half way through and had a good chat to Dec down the back who spotted the Frostie T shirt.

Esoteric evening at the Peel - terrific - never seen a gig like it.

On balance Christmas at the Peel, but I think that there's better to come!

I knpw that the DT support slot in Southampton has been thought of as a bit knaff in these parts, but if it wasn't for that I'd still have DT at the top of my band list and not Frost*, who are prolly my fave band in the world at this point!(occasionally having to do battle with Porcupine Tree) :D

I purchased tickets for the esoteric gig at the peel, and you will not believe how farked off mrs davejd was when we both came down with the flu a few days before and we couldn't make it. This was of course all my fault as apparently i had it three times as bad as she did. But, we will definately make it to islington in december  hurrah!

All the ones I've been to have all been great including the 2 Esoteric shows at The Peel & Cardiff. Hard to choose which is the best really, maybe the Xmas bash at the Peel, cracking weekend with It Bites on the Sunday. Another double header like that would be nice.

Ive only been lucky enough to see frost four times [if the esoteric gigs count ] islington was really good so was the aforementioned esoteric gig at the peel disappointed with the show at southampton, no fault of frost  the problems with that show have been well documented so  no need to there, for me the best by a long way was the peel xmass show i still get goose bumps just thinking about it.

My first frost gig was the Dream Theater one in Leeds. As many of you probably know sound wasn't great.

Everything got mish mashed and not as clear or perfect as one would hope.

Even the big banana section started to sound like huge watermelon

I've only ever been to one proper Frost* gig and that was the Christmas bash at the Peel. I didn't actually see any of it either as I was in the back bar (no not that one) watching on the screen and then had to go home because my trousers were too tight
I was at 2 of the Esoteric gigs and I reckon the Peel with Tinyfish was one of the funniest nights ever.

I'm with Nells.
The Esoteric Evening was one of the best nights I've ever had. I hurt from laughing.
And such great lip-adorenments.
And splendid biscuits.

But a close second has to be the Frost*mas gig. Even though - or perhaps because - I had the pleasure of having a 20 note rolled up and shoved up my nostril by the luvverly Philadelphia.
The atmosphere at that show was just lovely.

The gig in my avatar (Xmas at the Peel 2008)... of course, meeting the love of my life in the pub beforehand *might* have something to do with that.  :D

But both that and Summer's End were perfect weekends all round really!

My favorite Frost* gig lies somewhere in my future (I hope)...

If it is ever considered for Frost* to come to Canada, you have to come to Montreal. I'm not in Montreal myself, but it's just a 2 hour drive away, and many prog bands have passed in this big city (Marillion, Porcupine Tree, Transatlantic, just to name a few). It's one of those "logical" cities to go play at. Oh and if you were to come over NOW, Nick D'Virgilio would be in the area... hehe.   ;)

Post by: Pedro on June 23, 2010, 05:49:12 PM
Jem might be along to answer that at any time so this is not answering for him....
But I think the line has usually been that they would happily play, if the numbers work out alright.
So if someone organises a gig and sells enough tickets to cover the obvious expenses of everyone getting there etc. and, presumably makes enough of a profit to make it worth their own while organising/promoting it, then there should be a good chance of it happening - subject to diary conflicts and all that.
I think you can read all that in the posts that Jem has put out before...if you build it, they will come....that kind of thing.

Is there a Prog Festival over there that might make it happen?

OK nice!

There is one prog festival that I know, and went to last year for one evening (saw Mystery and Saga), but I just found out they're not doing a fifth edition. Not for lack of success, because it was more and more successful every year, with last year being sold out. Read about it here if interested: http://www.fmpm.net/eng/home.html (http://www.fmpm.net/eng/home.html) (see October 13th's post).

I think there is one festival in Quebec City, but I'm not certain if it's only Prog, but I think Dream Theater played there a couple of years back.

It's odd how Montreal, even the province of Quebec, have many prog rock enthusiasts, but lacks proper festivals for that type of music. However, many prog bands will stop by in Montreal or even Quebec City when touring. I live just beside Ottawa, and rarely, but sometimes we get treated to good prog concerts. The Bluesfest this year (yeah, you read that right, Bluesfest), has many prog artists, including Rush, Dream Theater, Steve Hackett, Roger Hodgson, The Musical Box. Even Iron Maiden is there this year

La Scala
Summers End
The Xmas bash
CRS BOTY.

A tough question... can't really choose!

My very first time - Summers End 2008. Excellent. Blew my socks off!
The Christmas gig at The Peel - wonderful. Have never felt so much love in a room.
The CRS BOTY gig in Jan 2008 - brilliant.
The Esoteric Evening. Marvellous. Even if the tash did keep falling off towards the end due to the temperature and humidity.

Possibly the Christmas gig has the edge over the others... but it's a pretty close call.

Saying "hi" to the guy next to you at gigs is a sound strategy and to be encouraged, but the chances of it being L33VEY next time are remote. Forum shirts would solve this. ;)

I've only seen them at the Leeds gig with Dream Theater. I don't remember much of it (I never seem to remember much from gigs, but I guess I'd travelled up with my dad from the Midlands early in the morning, pithered about doing not very much at his workplace and was therefore pretty tired before the gig began, so that didn't help), only that Dear Dead Days sounded incredible, and I think Welcome To Nowhere was pretty excellent as well. I forget sound quality being terrible, but I'm sure the Christmas gig in Bilston'll make up for that, and I'll actually know all the songs this time. =P

Inevitably it has to be the Xmas gig at The Peel, it was a great show anyway... but then out of the blue, I got to get up and sing with the guys how cool is that? Made for a great avatar pic too!!

I guess then it would be Summers End, then the Esoteric show.

I was at the DT show in Southampton, but our boys got stuffed somewhat on the sound front, which was such a shame. Still I did get a chance for a good natter with Dec while DT were on.

Only seen them in Southampton (my hometown) supporting DT. In fact hadn't even heard of them before it was announced they were supporting and on reading the name my reaction was something like: "Oh, Frost? Jeez, sounds like some dreadful deathcore band." and upon hearing them was "Sound like a bunch of 20-somethings having a massive laugh, I could like this."

Little did I know they were a touch more mature.  ;)

But anyway, I fell in love a bit and had a blast. Met all of DT beforehand whilst sitting outside and saw loads of people in Frost* t shirts (always wondered if I unknowingly saw any of the band...) and knew (and sang) every single word to their set, which I think very few people around me could do. Plus I'm sure at one point Dec pointed at me during BLM (my favorite song) and the sound quality was fine because I was in the second row. But loved every minute, a giant inflatable banana appearing during 'that moment' in BLM was great, and Jem introducing Dec as "In charge of housekeeping and weekend baking, Mrs Declan Burke."

Genius.

Stumbled across the guys when I was working in Holland - listening to the 'On The Rocks' podcast by Bobo. Heard BLM and as they say the rest is history! Ordered Milliontown from our local CD shop in the Hague and was completely blown away ...

CRS BOTY awards - one of my favourite gigs EVER! Went with my boy - so relaxed and friendly - and I couldn't drink 'cos I was driving! Highlight was Milliontown for me - even with the 'forgotten' piano part by Jem - 'You can't touch this' over the funky bass part made me giggle!

Leeds supporting DM - as previously reported poor sound (due to the soundcheck being 10 minutes before we were let in!) - the boys seemed a bit cramped at the front of the stage too.

Derby DVD shoot - I am not a time traveller. Watch this space.

Ooh, it's a massive toss-up between last night at Derby and the one before at Bilston...I think Bilston probably clinches it for the overall wow factor (and the Let It Snow remix, that was just inspired XD) but Derby was also ridiculously incredible, so it's a close call...

In gig terms I think Bilston just edged Derby (for me) because of the first-time impact of the humour and the sheer "OMG this foursome's awesome" effect.
Last night at Derby was more enjoyable (ignoring my aching feet) as an awesome experience shared with the largest gathering of Frost*ies I think I've been in....so far.
I was also able to better see the nimble fret-work of "your love is (Nathan) king" at Derby - amazing. :)

Well both the 2008 Christmas gig at the Peel and last nights DVD shoot at Derby gave me an equally warm tingly feeling.
I must remember to go for a pee before I get stuck at the front of the crowd...... ;o)

sawtooth in post shock

I think the sound was better at Derby than at Bilston, but there was more silliness and fun bits at Bilston.

But there were bourbons at Derby (misrepresented as the inferior custard variety of cream)!!!

There were custard creams going round too, I was wondering at the time too as my dad caught one of the flying bourbon packets as it was going for his head XD Those bourbons were bloody hard to open up though, although it definitely enhanced the gig =P

I must admit that I was a little disappointed when Jem mentioned custard creams, so I made no effort to nick myself a biscuit, but now I find out that they were bourbons I'm gutted!  They're my ultimate dunking biscuit!  Bah!

I think it was a shame that they were only Asda smartprice - but its the thought that counts!  The majority were custard creams weren't they?  I thought there was only a couple of packs of bourbons.?

The best Frost* gig is always the last one.   ;)

Both Islington & Derby were absolutely top drawer.  I'm looking forward to the DVD.

its been SO long since i've been frosted.  Christmas 08 at the Peel was marvellous. Just rocking out at the front - Andy trying to take our photo from behind the drum kit and being baffled by the manual focus.... !   Discovering and hugging so many people - it was just epic. I dont think i've smiled quite so much in one evening since.   :D

Hello Ladies and Gents!

Its my first day here on the forum but I wanted to add that I finally (after being a fan since the milliontown days) saw Frost* in Derby this week and it was the best gig I have been to for years and years. Brilliant and a good laugh too. I will definitely be going to see them again next time they tour!

I have some photos that I took that I intend to put online at some point. I will post them to the photos thread when I get chance.

On balance Christmas at the Peel, but I think that there's better to come!

After last night I'd still go with the above, but only just.....

Rock on Monday!

I was right - Derby it is and as others have said, a few small things could have made it even better.
Must be more to come!

My best gig will be the one they do in Newcastle (or Durham/Sunderland/Gateshead etc).

**hint hint**

Recent Manchester gig for me. Impressive energy.
Peel Xmas 08 was pretty close, more for the camaraderie
Ditto Rio's Leeds, what a night
Which leaves CRS is last place, or in UPS speak, least best
