Ah, sounds like a lot of fun and I would love to, but not sure I can really justify another private trip to Blighty for moosical reasons so soon after the last.

Best of luck with it; I'm already envious of those who'll be there. But I do trust that you'll allow it to be filmed / recorded for those of us who won't be there ...  ;)

This is very unfortunate timing, I and a few others will be at the CRS Magenta Special evening.
I thought Mr. Mitchell was already appearing elsewhere that night ( //http://www.readingarts.com/southstreet/whatson/event.asp?id=SXEB06-A781F236 ) ....must be mistaken?
Any road, I wish you the best of luck with it and hope it goes well.

JM asked who to contact...and that was all...

Perhaps Paul can shed some light?

Howdy!

Well, as you know Jem has left Twitter & indeed passed on all planning onto Sir John.
I've tried unsuccesfully (via Twitter) to arrange this with John (not responding - he's disabled the PM facility).

So, in summary, i'm wanting it to happen, but struggling to make it happen......

(Any help appreciated!)

Hello All,

I've finally received communication from John M, & both JM & JG are very much looking forward to this forthcoming house concert.
We're just in the process of finallising a date - i'm trying to secure a weekend slot in order to allow for those who'll need to travel & maybe stay over in a B&B or similar.

To make this happen i'm going to need 40 of you lovely people to attend.
So the BIG question -
ARE YOU GOONA COME! ?

Please please please can you PM me to register your interest (again!) & to reserve a place.

Paul

I guess before anyone can give a "promise" they'll need to know exactly how much and exactly when it will be.

It only says register an interest, he needs to know if there's time to build an extension to accommodate everyone

Sorry to be as pedant, but let's be straight about this....it actually also says "reserve a place", which could be taken as being a "promise" to attend....and it's important to understand why it has to be seen like that.

What this really boils down to is that Paul (who already deserves a medal in my opinion) needs 40 genuine commitments to pay 1/40 of the gig fee each. Otherwise either he ends up out of pocket or the Tw*ts have to accept less than is required.
The last thing that I want is for a fellow Frost*ie to get into a world of bad feeling, however trivial people might think this thing sounds. A casual "yeah, go on then" from 40 people won't do, in my opinion.

Given where this is happening, I would have to say that me and Mrs P are unlikely to make it....sadly. Unless it will coincide with another reason to be booking a hotel so far from home. That might sound a bit miserly but it's my honest position right now.

Did anyone else catch a glimpse of some messaging on Twitter last nite regarding what seems to be a possible resurrection of this house gig for the "Twats in Hats"? From what I interpreted Mr Brewer is already hosting a Frank Dunnery event soon (@Itbitesband mentioned) and feelers were going out to JM which looked semi positive. Rushed over here this morning to see if there was annyfing on the Forum - nothing I can see. Just thought I'd mention it, don't want The Frost*ies missing out.

Hi Brom,
I stuck my oar into the conversation on Twitter too...along the lines of; "let us know when the date is set and we'll promote it like crazy".
I don't want Paul to be the victim of Diary failure again...resulting in a gig that doesn't happen again, so I didn't want to raise hopes etc. too soon.
You're right to mention it as a possibility though. :)

Quote from: "RacingHippo"Up until now I'd not even considered this, what with it being rather a long way from Yorkshire, but given that I'll now be in London the day before.....
I'll just consult with my social secretary to see if I can get the weekend off.... ;)

Sadly I will be working absolutely nowhere near the vicinity (you lucky bugger Hippo) and as much as I would desperately love to be there, I can't contemplate a drive down to the south coast & back :(
But I will deffo be there in spirit - and kudos to Paul for organising this thing! :)

I now have a conundrum...So, until today I was supposed to be in S'oton for work on Monday night.  That was easy.  Go home Tuesday. Simple.

Now work stay has somehow changed to Thursday night.

So now, annoyingly, have a race and chase challenge...
Either
Leave Cambridge Thursday night -drive to S'oton and stay at soul-less hotel again... Do work thing on Friday day. Drive back to Cambridge Friday night, sleep in own bed and collect home based Frost*infested mates for gig.  Drive back down to S'oton together on Saturday  (for gig) then back to Cambridge (to get home) all in 48 hrs...
Or
turn up in S'oton by myself on Thursday, sort work stuff, original abandon plan, stay over somehow (camp out in MrPaulBrewsters garden, or Tesco car park?)..., hope things work out and eveyone else from home with tickets somehow turn up... offer friday night pre-gig services to MrPaulBrewster (markerpen and sticky labels etc... just like a conference! or whatever (within reason) ) to alleviate tedium of being marooned... Some dilemma huh, what d'ja think?

Just to let you, I finally managed to get my act together yesterday and today and so have flights, B&B, and rental car all duly booked. Thankfully, I did remember to buy a ticket for the actual concert ages ago ...  ;)

So, I shall be there, risking nylon burns and static by fighting it out in the front row of the carpet with Pedro ...  :P

(And if I'm right, even Nellie will be there, despite having informed me ages ago that she wouldn't. And having informed me that she wasn't surprised that I would be. Because I'm a fanboy, apparently. The blessed cheek of the woman.)

With much regret, ticket 16 won't be coming tonight.  I haven't been 100% since Frost*Bites when I picked up a virus which took weeks to subside.  This has been replaced by flu in the last week and with the antibiotics yet to kick in, I would be coughing and spluttering throughout tonight's performance, which isn't fair on J&J or the other 39 good souls.

So in the small chance that there's someone close to Canterbury who can come and collect ticket 16 and have a great evening...   :)

Well, just got in from this and it were gradely!  There was a great atmosphere in Paul's house and it was nice to meet some Frost*ies in real life - Pedro, Duey, Racing Hippo, Living Forever, Nellie (I have my dog tag!) and the man with the fearsome handshake!  John and Jem were on very good form; the music was both nicely played and well chosen, and afterwards both of them were gentlemanly enough to endure a few moments of gushing wibble from me.

I hope everyone else who was there had as good a time as me - doubtless there'll be more in-depth reviews than this one but I just wanted to say thanks again to Paul for sorting a very memorable night!

Amen. It was a really great evening indeed.
In case anyone is expecting/hoping to see video of the event, don't be surprised if there isn't any.
Jem and John specifically asked for video NOT to be posted, in order to keep it a really special event.
I intend to respect that and will not be posting any of it.
I know this will be particularly tough for those who had planned to be there but had to drop out due to ill health but there it is.
So you'll see photos and read write-ups but, hopefully, not see any YouTubery.
If there is another one organised sometime soon, get along to it if you can.

Back home in Scotland after a great night!  A winning combination of stunning musicianship and silliness.  Quite a challenge for them to learn a long setlist in a short time, including Jem having to learn 7 John Beck keyboard parts - not easy.  Big thanks to Jem and John for taking the time to chat and sign CD covers and a huge vote of thanks to Paul for coming up with the idea, giving over his house to 40 strangers and being such a good host.  :D

I concur with Pedro's setlist from the notes I scribbled down.  I asked Jem what the title of the new song was and he said it was Lantern.  Here Comes The Flood was a goosebump moment - JM sounded so like PG.  Beautiful arrangements of the Frost* tracks too.  Oh and all the songs had to end with expensive chords.

Blunders was called and message left (40 people yelling 'We love you, Craig!') but sadly no reply.

All in all, a great fun and unique event.

Apologies for any typos, my keyboard is covered in drool as a result of that setlist.

If that show was available for digital download I'd certainly pay good money for it. Bad money too.

True, but if it was available as a download, would the "specialness" of being there be reduced, even a little?
I really hope someone else (if there is anyone as amazing as MrPaulBrewer) takes up the challenge of hosting another of these. It sounds steep at £25 a pop (ding!) but the build-up, the banter, the nattering before and after (and of course minimal yapping during!) PLUS two awesome artists plying their trade....worth every penny, mile and Travelodge-induced ache/pain!

Actually that was something I forgot to mention.  During the quiet moments in the performance, you could hear a pin drop - it was wondreful!  The audience (who were, let's face it, the genuine fanboys and girls) were utterly respectful and silent, allowing others to enjoy the music.  I am becoming increasingly annoyed by people who spend good money to go to a gig and then spend the whole time yapping rubbish loudly to friends (especially during quieter / acoustic numbers), spoiling it for others who just want to listen to the music.  This was the perfect antidote to that!  8-)

This is v.true and was a very excellent thing.  We were also very fortunate I think in that Mr Brewer had a very cool multi-level house which meant that great views were possible for (I hope) all concerned.

I would pay more for what is essentially a private concert, than I would for a show in a big hall.  The intimacy would easily be worth it.

And I disagree that a video release would hurt the specialness at all.  I don't think there would be any problem finding enough people to go to the show, even with a video released afterward.

I wish we could host one over here!

I agree about paying extra for a private show. Lottery willing, I shall rent the House of Blues in Orlando, hire a handful of favo(u)rite bands to play, and fly over anyone who wishes to attend.

A jolly good time was had by one and all, I'd say. Well worth the journey, both for the gig and, of course, for the chance to meet up with fellow Frost*ies so soon again after Christmas, albeit in a very much more convivial environment than the Scala  <!-- s8-) -->8-)<!-- s8-) -->

If I say that Ash, Philadelphia, Living Forever, Pedro, Mrs Pedro, Racing Hippo, DueyC, Lyn, DS, JimD, and (mini-Merch Desk in tow) the redoubtable Nellie were there, then I have a quarter of the attendees immediately, but have most assuredly missed other denizens of these pages, for which I abjectly apologise ...

Thanks are most assuredly due to Paul for organising the gig and allowing us to share his house for the evening. A cracking idea and I for one didn't bat an eyelid at the entry fee (since he mentioned that it had been flagged as a concern).

As for the gig, well, others have covered the ins and out of the musical side of things, so it surely falls to me to provide some visual eye candy in the form of my customary gig photos:

www.flickr.com/photos/markmccaughrean/sets/72157632922592069/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/markmccaughrean/sets/72157632922592069/)

That said, they're all (apart from a handful at the end, just for you Nellie  <!-- s8-) -->8-)<!-- s8-) -->) taken from one static location in the second (of three <!-- s;-) -->;-)<!-- s;-) -->) row, because it didn't seem appropriate (or even desirable) to get up during the set and move around. Most are with my 85mm f/1.8 lens, because the room was fairly dark, meaning that the framing is similar too.

And as DS has already mentioned, the quiet bits were so extraordinarily quiet, I even felt self-conscious firing the shutter at those moments.

So, they're all a little samey, perhaps, but nevertheless hopefully an addition to memories of the night for some, or a small taster for those who couldn't make it.

For those you weren't there, you'll spot that Jem and John pulled the hilarious (ha!) stunt of switching their name badges. Which led to the entirely predictable and momentarily embarassing situation when I started talking to Jem after the gig, and the first words that came out of my mouth were "Evening, John ..." ...  <!-- s:roll: --><!-- s:roll: -->

p.s. Like many there, I too have a nice movie of one song, namely Snowman. But, as the man on the left has said ...

Thanks, Ash: probably the worst picture of the bunch technically, snapped on the fly, but nevertheless captures a special moment. Now if only we can get Blunders to save the voicemail and make it available as a digital file ...  ;)

Great write-up, James: well worth the wait. And thanks for anonymising the potentially litigious discussion re: Prof (you'll get sued if you don't include his title) Brian Cox. I'm sure he's a lovely chap in real life.

Speaking of whom, I had the eerie feeling earlier this week that he's decided to expand his remit even further beyond astronomy, particle physics, and biology: did anyone else see the the hyperactively demonstrative and certifiably batty Dr Joann Fletcher scurrying around the Valley of the Kings dressed in funereal black (including her umbrella) and say "C'mon, anyone can tell from the accent that that's just Coxy wearing a Ronald McDonald wig"  8-)
