Title: CELEBR8 2012
Post by: Nellie on February 28, 2012, 02:26:00 PM
I can't believe this line-up! Obviously, there's one huge omission from it but there is always a next time, who knows  :?
Weekend tickets are now on sale.

Ok I'm gonna say it.

I haven't listened to a single song (save calling all the heroes) by any of these bands but I surely do feel like I should have.
From what I can gather, this is a helluva festival for proggers.

But where to start?

I like dark, and electronic. Rocky but not too cheesy. I can do soft songs but they have to have an edge.

Any suggestions?

EDIT

Rubbish, I saw Pallas at High Voltage and quite enjoyed them

my personal recommendation would be not to listen to the Saturday bands

My favourite is obviously Tinyfish and being that they are led by a Godfrey, I would start with them.  Then Magenta.

Do not mistake the John Mitchell It Bites for the 80s It Bites.  (Though I guess they might do that song) Tall Ships was not exactly my cup of tea at first but after seeing JM do some of the songs many times at gigs it has kinda grown on me.  I have preordered the new album that they will be playing on the night.

Ordered! Sunday is an absolute cracker although I don't know any of Mars Hollow's stuff. Bit more mixed on Saturday but still worth going.  Subterranea is my favourite IQ album so that's a must! Rather went off Pallas after the way they treated Alan Reed & wasn't that taken with the last album but I'll give them another chance!  Not that convinced about the Tangent - when they followed Frost* at Summer's End in 2008, I went to the bar with other Frosties & Dec! 8-)

Post by: Pedro on February 28, 2012, 10:10:44 PM
Note: I think that the poster is slightly wrong, in that Mars Hollow will be on before Magenta on the Sunday.

It is indeed right not to confuse the two line-ups of It Bites but I have seen/heard them do the vast majority of the 80's IB stuff and jolly well too. It's right they should focus on the new stuff and I can't wait to get the new album.

I too didn't like the way Pallas treated Alan Reed but I bought the XXV album and I've seen them a couple of times since. It is  well done live but arguably lacks a little character (hmm...actually, pun intended! ).

I was luke (puns ahoy!) warm about the Tangent when I saw them at Summer's End '08 (it was rather confusing with so many on stage...BUT at SE '11 I was luke hot about them. In the cut down form, just four of them with the amazing Luke Machin on guitar, I could have watched them for at least another hour. Andy Tillison seemed re-energised in that setting.

The Sunday line-up is pretty sweet. I don't know the band that I can't helping reading as "Marshmallow" but I hear good things about them. I hope their inclusion on Sunday doesn't "squeeze" the timeslots of the other bands too much (curfew and all).

I would be happy to watch the Saturday lot, but we can't be there that day. So, let's have the Day tickets Nellie!  :)

I was originally just going to go for Sunday but has I'd have to travel up on Saturday anyway to be there for the start on Sunday I thought I may as well get a weekend ticket and go up a bit earlier on the Saturday.

In all seriousness, this should be one hell of a show. Subterranea is a very ambitious album and should be well worth seeing as a full stage production.

And It Bites are doing all of Map Of The Past, which I am certainly very excited about.  8-)

John Beck said last weekend that he thought they should do the whole album on the tour, but hinted that other members of the band may not be ready. I suppose there's a certain amount of rearranging required in order to make things work live.

Hello everybobdypeeps,

Well, you've heard Jem's awesome jingle I guess ? Thanks to Pedder's for brokering the multimillion $ deal between us to land that one !

Now you've heard it, of course, you'll be rushing to buy your tickets from http://www.themerchdesk.com (http://www.themerchdesk.com) and checking out the website at http://www.celebr8prog.com (http://www.celebr8prog.com) for news and interviews etc. We've added an interview with Andy Tillison of The Tangent - more interviews to come. There will also be a flurry of Celebr8 shows from various podcasters too as we get nearer.

Also on the website is Your Guide to Cleebr8 featuring that cheeky pair, Twang and Simon "Tinyfish" Godfrey. Check it out for all the critical Cleebr8 info at http://www.celebr8prog.com/Celebr8_Home.html (http://www.celebr8prog.com/Celebr8_Home.html)

Really now, what festival gives you more ? It's own theme tune, interviews with the stars, videos, cool idents and jingles and a top top line up.

Well, unless I can find:
a) a floor/sofa/bench to crash on
b) a lift from and back to Darkest WestYorkshireshire
You'll be Celebr8ing without me :(

Hoped-for happenings in company-land haven't happened yet (although they're well on the way), which means I've had to spend another month sans-salary and am consequently broney-stoke.
And I am told that mortgage payments are more important than prog festivals. Hah!

Things here have improved considerably-ish. Firstly I am not out of the country now or have to be next week, so that's the first hurdle I thought I'd fall at cleared. Secondly there always were family led plans for the whole of this weekend, so that has definitely ruled Saturday out, however, if one manages to earn lots and lots of Brownie points, Sunday could be possible. I'm 40/60 against at present... only because I have not yet raised the question! - we'll see.

Not yet, Mouse; simply been swamped with work over the last few months. I have a lot of Tinyfish shots, some of which look pretty good in the previews I've looked at, but some work is needed with Lightroom to pimp them up appropriately. Some snaps post-gig too, some of which you feature in ...  ;)

I'll probably get to them in early August; I'm about to pop off for a couple of weeks holiday, doing my bit to keep the Greek economy afloat. Quite literally, in fact, since the first week will involve sailing in the Ionian on a Bavaria 39 ...  8-)

Roland pick-up,  independent string feeds to his VG99 rig.

Pedro's got it bang on. Tinyfish don't use keyboards live (or anything else now, for that matter), so synth sounds come via guitar. As of this year, Simon's entire rig went digital - the only 'real' aspects of the guitar are the body and the strings. No backline, either - signal went straight into the PA and out through the monitors (exactly wot Rush do innit).

I always thought that combining rhythm guitar and synth parts into one was a brilliant idea. Don't tell him I said that, though. Erm... he's a right nobber, that Godfrey.  ;)

We're trying to get a map together of where people came from to get to Celebr8.

Here it is if you'd like to pin your location (just press edit and drag the blue pin or your bespoke pin to your location)

https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&m ... 19&vpsrc=1 (https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=201307804350452313427.0004c5962d36dea1dcb6e&hl=en&ie=UTF8&t=m&z=19&vpsrc=1)

Anyone who hasn't got a Google account and would like a pin, just let me know via PM or email (obv I only need your hometown)  ;D

Also, if you have any pics or stories, reviews or video that you'd like to share, I'll be setting up a section of the Channel Celebr8 section of the website to publish these  Doesn't matter if they'r not "pro" it's the feeling that counts. All submissions will be credited.

I can't see this posted anywhere else but Frost* are nearly headlining Celebr8.2. Earlybird tickets are still on sale.

"Nearly headlining" ... ? Is that a euphemism for "not headlining"?  8-)

More seriously, it's good to see that this is happening: I'll have to see if I can make it to the event that didn't happen this year.

I'm guessing, however, that the band list isn't fully complete yet: seems as though some additional bands might be squeezed in, particularly on the Saturday.

No, that's it. 4 bands on the Saturday and 5 on the Sunday. Same as last time....everyone gets to play for a decent length of time and you can take in some great acoustic stuff in between.

The "nearly headlining" is, I strongly suspect, entirely of Jem's design....this way they can comfortably load-out, wind-down, meet the punters, etc. without people chasing you to clear-out cos the night-clubbers want to get it. He's not ddft and he's not up-himself about band status and such piffle. Full marks.

Oh, don't worry; I meant it very much tongue-in-cheek. I have no problem at all with Frost* being anywhere on the programme and, indeed, I'd agree that it'd be best for all of us to have the chance of a post-gig natter before turning into a pumpkin.

That said, I have no idea what "ddft" means: the best the web can do for me is "deep digital flexor tendon" or "Disjoncteur Différentiel de Fuite à la Terre", neither of which seems particularly likely, even given your assuredly polyglot status  8-)
