Gigs / Portland/Cambridge
« on: August 01, 2016, 09:29:58 AM »
Urgh.

What is it with Frost* and rubbish venues?

I had to leave early last night before I fainted in the heat. I was gutted to do so; but it was either that or pass out.

The previous time I saw our beloved band was that Peel Christmas gig, which was equally bad. Well, the music was good, but the venue again rubbish. I see a trend here... even if there is ever another tour I think I'll be giving it a miss as I am sadly too old to cope with the sort of conditions we had last night  :(

I hope it was better for everyone else...

Keith.

I went to the G3 gig in Hamburg yesterday.

My impression was... I have never seen a keyboard player looking so out-of-place as Jem looked alongside those rather slick and polished (over-polished?) guitar heroes. He did a good job, yes of course; he just didn't seem to fit on that stage to me.

I rather suspect that this might be me projecting my own expectations rather than any degree of reality though!

A fun gig: definitely. But give me a nice prog concert in preference any day  8-)

Keith

I went to see the current Deep Purple play the LG Arena in Birmingham last November.

I was expecting to enjoy the gig, but they utterly surpassed every expectation I had. What an excellent, excellent evening's music... it's all too easy to forget just how many top tunes these guys own, and they had no qualms about playing their "best of" at the gig. Deep Purple were comfortably my favourite gig of last year, easily surpassing a certain other gig at The Peel just before Christmas.

As to where to start with their catalogue, my recommendation is Made In Japan. These guys have always been best live methinks.

Cheerio,

Keith.

I've seen Lalle Larsson play live a few times (3 times with AoM and twice with Karmakanic) and wholeheartedly agree... he is simply astonishingly good on keyboards. Jawdroppingly good in fact!

In a Perfect World took me quite a while to get to like, but now I think it's brilliant. Not quite as good as Who's The Boss In The Factory though... The Boss remains one of my favourite cds from the last ten years  :)

I am just glad there's no snow forecast this time... hopefully my little car will be able to get me there through the wind and rain... I couldn't bear to miss a second Frost* gig due to pesky weather.

I hope the wind won't be too bad for the cosmic lawnmower's faerie crossing  ;)

Cheerio,

Keith

ps. starting to get quite excited about it now...

I guess I'll have to abandon the idea of coming to the gig, then... :(

Is that because of the gig being "all but sold out", Gandalf? I haven't seen anything about it being completely and definitively sold out, so don't give up yet! Of course, if it's about the cost of travel and such, then that's bad luck indeed.  :(

Indeed... "all but sold out" isn't quite all gone yet, but you do need to be quick now methinks; they'll all be gone soon. Frost... it's got to be worth moving hell and earth (and snow) to see, shirley??

Cheerio,

Keith.

ps. you may have guessed: I am still a tad distraught at missing the gig last December because of the evil snow!  ;)

Ha... I had to google that to remember the song! Excellent (if a little mad) song  :D

Very excited about this gig: I'd assumed I'd lost the chance to see these guys live, thank goodness for the reprieve! There is now one less ticket available; the chap I spoke to confirmed it's all but sold out now.

I pray that this year there will be no evil snow!

Some video from the Karmakanic / Hasse Fröberg gig in Lund yesterday... the rather large chap wearing the Black Live Machine t-shirt (and blocking the clear view of the cameraman   ) is me...

Top, top gig.

I soooo need to read this forum more frequently!

From reading this thread I have now learnt that The Enid are touring this spring. A little investigation shows they are playing at Southampton, which is just along the road from me. Good! I am now the proud owner of a ticket to see The Enid! Ace! I have not seen them since the early 80s  8-)

What else... I am off to see Hasse Fröberg and Musical Companion in Lund at the end of Feb; a bit of a trek I know, but it's an excuse to go visit Malmö again as much as anything. Jonas Reingold, Lalle Larsson and Krister Jonsson are also doing a set so that should be one good afternoon's music.

I am also going to see Frost* this year... no matter where or when the gigs are... these guys I have to see live.

Cheerio,

Keith.

Morning All.

I first became aware of Frost* when a certain Mr Roine Stolt mentioned on the Flower Kings mailing list that he was listening to and impressed by them. I had never heard of them before, but as Roine is a bit of a prog super-hero I noted the name and bought Milliontown shortly after.

I am ashamed to say it sat on the shelf for some time before I listened to it, but once I did that was it. I was hooked. What cool tunes  8-)

Since then I obviously have bought all the Frost* CDs I can (I am an old-fashioned chap who still thinks a real CD beats a load of 0s and 1s stored on a computer), and am eagerly awaiting the live DVD. Sadly I missed the Islington gig back in December due to the pesky snö - I was gutted. Well; next time, hopefully.

Cheerio,

Keith.
