I suppose it's about time I plagued you lot with this.    The older Godfrey being has a solo project on the go. It is called Shineback, the album is called Rise Up Forgotten, Return Destroyed and it's on course to be released at some point in the first half of next year. Artwork will be provided by that talented bugger Vitamin P. It's rather different from what Simon has done as part of Tinyfish, focusing a lot more on electronic sounds and composition. There are a few special guests involved: Matt Stevens, Andy Ditchfield (DeeExpus), Henry Rogers (DeeExpus / Touchstone / Final Conflict / Nerve Toy Trio), Dec Burke and Hywel Bennet (The Dec Burke Band).

There are a few tasters and sneak peaks out there to whet the appetite. Here's what Simon's chucked up onto Soundcloud so far:

Shineback Album Audio Teaser - This runs through much of the album and gives a good idea of what to expect without giving too much away about what happens when. There have been quite a few changes made since this was stuck together, so it shouldn't spoil the first listen when the album is released.

Here Come The Envoys (Intro) - This is a rough mix of the intro to a song called Here Come The Envoys that Simon posted about a few pages back.

The Envoy - The Envoy was used as the Celebr8 theme, but I believe it was a leftover piece from Shineback, so it's rather similar to some elements of the album.

Little Keys - Little Keys won't be on the main album, but it will be featured somewhere as a bonus track. Personally, it's one of my favourites from the Shineback canon and I think of it much more than a mere extra.

Rise Up Forgotten, Return Destroyed (Clip) - This is a short snippet of the album's title track to give a little taste of Henry Rogers' drumming contribution.

They are the four uploads that are most apparent to me as being directly relevant to RUF,RD, but there are a few other tracks on Simon's Soundcloud page here which may be of interest.

Over on YouTube, there are three related videos:

1. A teaser trailer for the album, featuring the more ambient element of some of the music.

2. The Memory House 1 video blog.

3. The Memory House 2 video blog. This features the multi-vocal part Roger speaks of.

Finally, there is another full demo track available for listening as part of an episode of The European Perspective which was co-coordinated by our very own James 'LivingForever' Hendry and that can be found here. The track can be found towards the end of the show, although the whole thing is really worth a listen as it's an electro special looking at the more progressive side of that style.

Good heavens, everyone! How have you all been? I do apologise for my absence of late. I have been popping my head 'round the door every now and then to check on the ol' travelling banana and see what's generally up, but just couldn't find the time to catch up with the place, even in this relatively quiet state.

Must try harder! I have wiped the slate clean and am ready to start over. So, you lot...

What have you all been up to?  

Since the event of Hallowe'en is upon us, I was wondering what the good folk of the forum think are the best scary songs. I believe Gonzo's next Experiments show is Hallowe'en themed, so maybe we could just cheat and reference his setlist.  

I was thinking of Frost*'s own Milliontown (coz it's about zombies, apparently) and Genesisisisisis's Home By The Sea (about a haunted house and rocks like a b*stard) and Supper's Ready (because it's just generally scary). If I ever get invited to a Hallowe'en fancy dress party (highly doubtful...), I'm going as Peter Gabriel in flower mode.  

Anyways, what do we all think?

Good afternoon, everyone!

For the last month or so, I've been working on an orchestral version of the Tinyfish track Nine Months On Fire. Last night, I finally completed it. If you're interested, it can be heard and downloaded over on my Bandcamp site, which I must say big thanks to Jem for putting me onto, because it's a brilliant place and I heartily recommend it to everyone. If you don't know much about Tinyfish, then you must scuttle over to their website and discover some wonderful music, especially their original version of the tune.

I'd also like to thank the rather fab Jim from Tinyfish for doing the rather fab logo that's up there, too. Cheers, Jim!  

If you want to know the full-ish story about why I did it, there's an explanation of sorts on my blog. I just did it for a bit of fun, and I hope you like it.

There's an interesting interview with her ladyship on the BBC here on the problems of touring. She highlights many now familiar issues, and it upsets me that it's really starting to hinder more and more artists' work.

Good evensong, chaps! My friend on Monday upgraded his home work PC from Windows XP to Windows 7. All was going reasonably swimmingly until it came to installing a few Spectrasonics plug-ins. Installation went fine, but Pro Tools can't see them, and so his problem is revealed.

I admit that I'm completely in the dark about these things (and was nearly asleep at the time), so I don't know exactly what was tried. I do know that he tried changing the directories that the plug-ins were installed into (if that makes sense), but to no avail. Pro Tools still turns a blind eye to them.

I don't suppose anyone has any ideas/suggestions as to a remedy for this little problem? Again, I don't know exactly what was tried or any technicalities, but I can relay instructions and that sort of information. Any help would be gratefully appreciated and rewarded with biscuits.

I found Jason Downs' debut album and Moby's 18 while I was cleaning up during the Summer. 18 is now on the iPod, Downs is not. I found some other stuff too, but that's better of buried. They were dark times...  

Well, after playing Tick Tock (Part 3) to death on the free CD from Prog last month, I did a bit of snooping on their website and got the album from iTunes. For £5.35.

Phenomenal! Absolutely stunning! It's been quite a while since I've heard a band come out with so many different textures and sounds within one piece and manage to make them all work together. I love this album! Along with Joe Bonamassa's The Ballad Of John Henry, I think it's the release of the year so far.  

But... that's all my opinion. Has anyone else heard this album? Any views on the band in general? Any suggestions as to which one of theirs I get next?

Oh yeah, if you want to get it in MP3 and for slightly cheaper, try Amazon here. For less than a fiver, I honestly think you can't go wrong.  8-)

Hellay hellay! Just thought I'd say that I've got a new tune up over on my MySpace page. It's part of an ongoing mini-solo-project in which I'm experimenting to see if I'm actually any good at making music and seeing what I can do with it.

The first track, The Great Fog (Part 1), is a short instrumental piece, designed to be an introduction for whatever follows by creating an atmosphere. Part 2 will act as the closer, but I haven't even thought about what to do that one yet. Best to get the stuff that comes inbetween done first.  

The second track, Think/Talk, is something I'm really proud of - it's my vocal debut.  8-)  It came to me in a flash of inspiration at about 03:30 one night and was written there and then. The song deals with my problem of over-analysing and over-thinking situations by, ironically, analysing and thinking about it. You can also download it for free!  

I have to admit that most of it was drawn into Cubase as I don't yet have a MIDI controller keyboard. I like to think of it as "engineering" music.  8-)  Anyways, I'll let you lot tear them apart before I carry on with anything. I have an electronic version of Led Zeppelin's Going To California in mind which should keep me occupied for a while.

All complaints and anger about that are to be sent on a postcard or sealed envelope to...

Still, it's a bit of a shame that bands like Yes and King Crimson continue to neglect the UK. Even Rush managed to pay a flying visit in 2007 (which I missed, bah!).
