Gear Corner / These new-fangled Electrical Drum Kits
February 02, 2014, 08:54:06 PM
There's a possibility I may need to pick up the sticks again for a London-based project.
(Don't get excited - it's a very amateur thing doing covers, and necessarily so given I'm only in that neck of the woods 2.5 nights a week).
Which means I'll need something to practice hitting.
But quietly.

I am led to believe that the Niponese Ya-ma-ha people and the denizens of the Land of Ro (amongst others) have cleverly invented such a thing.
I'm also aware that really good ones cost a pigging fortune, and I ain't spending loads of dosh on one (mostly due to school fees but also due to it, as previously stated, being a very low-key affair).

So I'm looking for any advice that's out there vis-a-vis getting a decent, probably second-hand kit for as much under a grand as I can get away with.

Anyone?

No, not the album by Air.
Those Swedish chaps wot can sing rather well.

I'm going to see them on Saturday 14th in Maltby, with a very excited Pygmy Hippo.
They're playing the Peel the day before... who's going? I might try to wangle an extra night in London if there'll be some Frost*ies about (and the possibility of curry)....

Frost* / Blunders' New Kit
July 31, 2013, 10:19:26 AM
Following the re-release of Milliontown, we can now reveal the drum kit that Craig used to re-record the parts for some of the choons.

Combining Blunders' love of "fusion" kits with Frost*s love of baked confectionery, I think you'll agree that this drumcuit really takes the bis-kit.

With ExtrasTM!

As reported by Jem on The Blog, the rights to Milliontown have reverted back to his good self, and in celebration, he's released it digitally on Bandcamp for the bargain price of One Poorly Octopoid.

But that's not all.
Rather than repeat himself, just go and read the blog!

Also: Congrats to ES :)

Announcements / News! DVD! Albums! More albums!
May 12, 2013, 01:02:25 PM
As seen on Jem's blog (succinctly précis'd by Trapezium Artist (and then elaborated all over by me)):

  • DVD to be released this year, probably October
  • No Six Minutes In September this year, but a new single album for the current record label, InsideOut, in summer 2014, in order to neatly complete the band's three-album deal with them.
  • 6MIS then released in 2015 and 2016
  • Milliontown and Experiments in Mass Appeal to be re-recorded with new drum and bass parts from current incumbents of those respective seats in the band, Craig "Blunders" Blundell and Nathan (Your Love Is) King

For a slightly more understandable version of this, read Jem's blog!

Folks, we have a new home.
It's going to take a while to make it all look like "home" again, but bear with us while teams of hippos fiddle with knobs.

Announcements / Sponsor a Hippo, Today!
July 01, 2012, 03:12:45 PM
Yes, folks, this is a once- (OK, twice) -in-a-lifetime opportunity to sponsor your Favourite* Hippo as he attempts to (not) deafen himself and 800 other nutters by them getting together in a Big Room and all simultaneously playing the same drum groove for a full three minutes.

WITHOUT A SAFETY NET!

And it's all in aid of The MS Society.

You can sponsor me here => //http://www.justgiving.com/John-Kennard
G'wan! G'wan!

What's MS? Why should I care?
It's Multiple Sclerosis.
Yep, sounds like some congenital defect that happens to Other People, doesn't it?
Well, it's not.
It's struck two of my friends completely out of the blue, and periodically turns them from fit, active, fun-loving people into helpless, dependent lumps. This does nothing for their psychological state, I can tell you.
So I'm keen to help them, and the 100,000 others in the UK like them.

You're doing WHAT?!?
Attempting to break the Guinness World Record for "Largest full drum kit ensemble" by playing this simple beat:
http://youtu.be/-0xvMXIvHL8
... for 3 minutes.
Together.
Yes, really. Drummers. Playing at the same speed. Hundreds of them.
That means we'll all have to speed up at the same rate!

You may remember we did this back in 2009. That time there were 582 of us, and we raised >£65,000.
This time there's 846 of us, so we should raise... um... even more!

Here's the Hippo's-eye view from '09:

That's only a quarter of the hall.
And there's going to be EVEN MORE this year!

* I am, aren't I? Well, you can at least pretend for now.

No, it's not a medical condition contracted by cartoon Gauls upon drinking too much druidic potion, but one of these:

Look! They're proper Frost*risks an' all!
And there's.... three of them.

Other Bands / Tw1tterband!
February 05, 2011, 11:43:20 PM
Last Friday, at about 1pm, a friend re-tweeted a desperate plea for help from this bloke looking for a drummer to record the drum track to Rod Stewart's Maggie May by 8pm that night. He'd got just about everything else covered and ready to mix.
I duly obliged on my crappy electronic kit and sent it to him, but he'd already had another offer and mixed it, albeit one recorded through a laptop mic

But this was just the trial-run.

As he'd proved it could be done, he decided to do it "for real" and with better recordings, a better mix and a bit more time. And all for chariddy. And all organised and managed through the medium of Twitter.
He set a deadline of 8pm Sunday and proceeded to tweet to the world, asking for whoever could add something to it.
By Tuesday the original drummer for the trial had been unable to improve on his recording facilities as he'd hoped, so I stepped in with my high-tech set-up (cheap Superlux mics) in my acoustically-optimised recording room (garage).

Since then, we've got guitars, bass, some luvverly Hammond, the obligatory mandolin and even some classy ukulele.

The final result is going to be debuted at the unearthly hour of 6:50am GMT on BBC Radio 5 Live, Sunday 5th Feb (that's tomorrow morning), together with an interview with @Wh1sks (the man behind it all) and our lead singer, @DavieLegend.
Wow. I'll be heard on national radio. Scary. I wish I'd had a chance to re-record my part now - I only intended it to be a quick guide track!

Anyway. The "single" will be properly released via the medium of youTube at 8pm. Yes, YouTube. There's a video, which is as I speak being edited, featuring home-recorded vids sent in by each member of themselves recording their bit.
It's going to be a laugh.
And you'll all get to see what a mess my garage is.

Here's the accompanying blog for the project. A short interview with each band member is on there, too. Or will be soon.

But most important of all, here's the JustGiving page where we're collecting donations / money for "buying" our record.

Some twittering peeps have already kindly donated, but as not everyone tweets, I thought I'd spread the word here too.....
