Friends Of Frost* / The Environmentalists
January 29, 2013, 12:59:02 PM
Hello all! It's been a while since I last visited but I assure you I still check up on you from time to time.

Anyhoodlings, I've been busy working on some tracks with a good friend of mine and would like to share them with you guys (Knowing this is such a creative and supportive environment)

So we called ourselves "The Environmentalists", disregarding many people's rules of no "The's".

So here are some rough tracks that we've started panning out, you'll quickly pick up the style.
https://soundcloud.com/theenvironmentalists

We also plan to release songs as they come to us, a move that I like when other bands do it so we'll see how it goes eh?

Announcements / Dec should know
March 03, 2012, 04:33:57 PM
Just been watching the TDL Frost report where Jem trundles along to Mr. Burkes house.

Much to my surprise I instantly recognised the landscape outside his window (I won't give the game away :P) as I've recently tested the water in that there pond for part of my Geography degree.

Just thought Dec should know that the system is doing it's job nicely ;)

Any other prog wizard related anecdotes?

You weren't there man.

And neither were I  :D

I'm just traversing through Music Radar's coverage of the event. Will have to keep my eye on the Nord Drum that's been announced. I have hopes that because it is Nord it'll be capable but so far it hasn't wowed me

Anyone else seen anything they like?

THE CODEORGAN ANALYSES THE *BODY* CONTENT OF ANY WEB PAGE AND TRANSLATES THAT CONTENT INTO MUSIC. THE CODEORGAN USES A COMPLEX ALGORITHM TO DEFINE THE KEY, SYNTH STYLE AND DRUM PATTERN MOST APPROPRIATE TO THE PAGE CONTENT.

FIRSTLY, THE CODEORGAN SCANS THE PAGE CONTENTS AND REMOVES ALL
CHARACTERS NOT FOUND IN THE MUSICAL SCALE (A TO G), AND THEN ANALYSES THE REMAINING CHARACTERS TO FIND THE MOST COMMONLY USED 'NOTE'. IF THIS IS AN EVEN NUMBER THE PAGE IS TRANSLATED IN TO THE MAJOR PENTATONIC SCALE OF THAT PARTICULAR NOTE, IT BECOMES MINOR IF THERE IS AN UNEVEN NUMBER.

SECONDLY, THE CODEORGAN DEFINES WHICH SYNTHESIZER TO USE. THIS IS
BASED UPON THE TOTAL NUMBER CHARACTERS USED ON THE WEBPAGE – THERE ARE CURRENTLY 10 SYNTHESIZER EFFECTS AND THE ONE CHOSEN IS PICKED BASED UPON THE PERCENTAGE OF CONTENT.

LASTLY, THE CODEORGAN SELECTS A DRUM LOOP BASED UPON THE RATIO OF CHARACTERS ON THE PAGE VERSUS THE NUMBER OF CHARACTERS THAT ARE ACTUALLY MUSICAL NOTES – THERE ARE CURRENTLY 10 DIFFERENT DRUM LOOPS TO PICK FROM.

GO AND MAKE BEAUTIFUL MUSIC TOGETHER.

Any Other Business / Musical Cock-Ups
August 03, 2011, 12:09:58 PM
While watching Spock's Beard at High voltage, I noticed something.

Cocking up on stage is great fun.

Seriously, even though the Beard were hitting some real bum notes, dropping sticks, and mis-fingering licks I still had a brilliant time and the cheeky winks and smiles to each other are so much more memorable for it.

I guess it just reminds us that even really talented musicians are still human.

Anyone else have some great experiences of onstage blunders (not him) either of your own band or others?

Hello Frosties, thought I'd share with you some demos that I hope to one day (never) get recorded into proper nice ambient thingy songs.

Just instrumentals called Pennies and Hedgehogs.

There's also one called Elwood party time. That was something I wrote for rabbit behavioural research purposes (Not really).

Other Bands / On the backs of angels
June 29, 2011, 04:31:37 PM
"On the Backs of Angels" from the album "A Dramatic Turn of Events"

http://youtu.be/oasnbzEMV08

Next single to be "Humping the Cathartic Moose"

Personally thought it was quite good. Started to realise my music taste is less geared towards a million notes per second though.

So Sunday evening (night?) conversation time:
Whats your favourite sounds/patches/tones/gear of your favourite artists/bands?

I quite love Neal Morse's string/synth patch sound that you can hear 15 seconds into lay down your life

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGqgrDAoJ4s

Is that based on a mellotron or something?  :D  I know he uses it a lot.
Gav Harrisons snare sound is another contender.

Any thoughts?

'Ello you budding (budget) keyboardists/programmers/widdlers out there.

Fancy M-audio oxygen 49 key for sale. Great if you're looking to get into the world of keyboarding (plenty of free softsynths online) Happy to give priority to fellow forumers who will make sure she gets a nice home.

Of course it might be awkward if we all end up in the same room  :|

Ask Frost* / Right are you ready for this?
December 02, 2010, 03:05:10 PM
Right. See if you can explain this one.

In many Frost* songs theres a little section of notes that don't seem to fit musically.  (An example would be the 2:50 and 4:42 mark in the Snowman/Gabriel mashup. I know theres others out there, I just can't remember where :P)

Are these actual scales of some sort? Are there more out there? I'd love to know...

I have pretty low knowledge of scales, modes etc go easy

Other Bands / Porcupine Tree at the Royal Albert Hall
October 15, 2010, 12:12:50 AM
on the train back after seeing the pt lads. Cracking as always and spot on with every lick, fill and whimsical observation of society. However, felt let down by their setlist. It was brilliant but i'm sure i read somewhere that this was the last time they would play the incident in its entirety. Only the first half made an appearance though :( the venue was HUGE and added to the atmosphere. Not really a sound expert but i could hear the drums so that was cool. Any other frosties there? Should have set up a pre-gig topic really. Ah well. Apparently it was recorded so i hope to buy the cd soon.

Also the girlfriend knew that the singer was called steve. Aww bless her.

Ask Frost* / Being in the band
October 11, 2010, 03:30:36 PM
Quick question for anyone that can answer it. When were the members of Frost* session musicians and when did they become a band?

Am I right in thinking that Milliontown was session work from JM, TBE and JJ, while EIMA was a proper band (i.e. profits were split)?

Is Blunders being hired? Is he cheap? Does he do kids birthday parties?

Gear Corner / Gear Lust - Autumn Edition
September 24, 2010, 03:35:58 PM
Thought I'd get this one started up as we haven't had a good chat about nifty gadgets and wonderous instruments for a while.

I'm really getting back into my drumming now after buying a new HHX china and Gav Harrison's rhythmic illusions book. Really would love a new snare from the Black Panther range by Mapex. Hopefully this beauty:

Its an all rounder really as thats kind of me in a nutshell. It's relatively cheap but still expensive for my current financial situation.

Hey ho, student loan, due next week and gone the week after

Gear Corner / Drum Microphones
August 17, 2010, 06:15:50 PM
Ok so I know theres a few drummers and a few sound engineers on the forum so if any of you could help. Where is the best place to *start* with drum mics?

I am a student with a low income (£0), is there a cheap alternative? Grizzlying in mind, I don't particularly want to buy a mixing desk (although I have the feeling that it would help towards the best drum sound)

Also I have a small multi-track recorder with 2 quarter inch mic inputs. Whats the best option there? An overhead condenser and a snare mic?

Any reccomended microphone brands?

Any help is greatly appreciated!  :D
