Not sure how many Kevin Gilbert fans are lurking on the board, but I dug up this piece of his from way back in 86. Really great song. Especially considering he must have been around 19 or 20 when this was released. Felt like sharing!

Ask Frost* / Re: How do you synth?
July 28, 2012, 12:44:00 AM
Being someone who asks the same question every day, this has been an informative post. I bought myself a GAIA SH-01 to kinda ease myself into the synthing world. Still haven't figured the darn thing out yet. This is what I get for spending most of my life on a piano and only banging on electronic devices for the last 3 or so years.

Now.  I can't see something like this without seeing opportunity.  So, I sent them this e-mail...

"I want you to write me a progressive rock epic in line with bands like Dream Theater, Circus Maximus, and Pain of Salvation.  I want the song to be 37 minutes long.  If it doesn't have at least 80 meter changes, it's not prog enough.  I have lyrics ready.  It's about a man who wakes up after dreaming this existential nightmare.  Then, he visits his wise oracle-scientist-vigilante uncle and tells him about his dream. His uncle reminds him that dreams are just a "Progression of Truth: Ghost Magnesium Sphere pt. 1" (THATS THE SONG NAME) and that he should get his life together.  The man agrees and heads home.  Upon arriving home, he finds himself sleeping in his bed, at which point he wakes up, having forgotten the last 27 years of his life.  For years, he scours the Earth for answers only to find that the only truth in life is the truth in death.

I want numerous guitar solos in super locrian, whole-tone, and throw in some harmonic minor scales too - the faster the better.  The song will start in 9/8.  It will end in 13/4 and resolve in the last measure in 4/4.  And if you've done your math correctly, you'll find that 13-9= 4.  And 8-4= 4.  4/4.  WHOA.  DEEP.

In the song, I want lots of hammond organ usage mixed in with deep, highly-reverberated choirs.

The singer should sound like a mix between Geddy Lee from Rush and Tiny Tim.  But higher.

Do you think you can do this?"

Frost* / Re: Hyperventilate as My Fireworks Opener
July 07, 2012, 04:27:05 AM
That's killer! I was just thinking if anyone had done anything like this to Frost*. More specifically, one of those Christmas light shows, but 4th of July fireworks are just as cool.

I had a hard time with this list, actually. I think of my interests as being prog-influenced or experimental in nature, but I realized that I don't listen to many straight-up prog bands.

1. Frost*
2. Kevin Gilbert (Solo stuff, Toy Matinee, and Giraffe)
3. Cardiacs
4. Genesis
5. Pink Floyd
6. Porcupine Tree
7. Frank Zappa
8. Dream Theater
9. Rain for a Day
10. Pain of Salvation

Some not-so-prog or mildly proggy stuff that are worthy of mention...

1. Thomas Newman
2. Imogen Heap
3. Bryan Scary and the Shredding Tears
4. Jellyfish
5. Silverchair
6. Devin Townsend
7. ELO
8. Toto
9. Steve Vai
10. Mika

Gear Corner / Re: More sampling help...

Quote from: "Villuccikeys"Ok. I fixed some errors and have run into new ones. Does anybody know why when I sample this file (wav, 44.1, 16-bit) it has static alternating on both channels? I've been able to sample one thing perfectly. So, I think I'm making progress..

Man, that guy was an idiot. Thank God *I* know how to sample. ;)

Listened to the sample track of Kishi Bashi. Holy mother of God. I keep throwing money at the screen but nothing happens! GORGEOUS.

Quote from: "Mooncat"Weird, I happened across this album via //http://www.powerpopaholic.com, a fave of mine for (mostly) non-proggy stuff.
It is really retro and a great listen

I've been looking for a site like this. Can't ever have enough power pop!

Other Bands / Daffy's Elixir

Anybody get a chance to hear the new Bryan Scary album, "Daffy's Elixir?" I just started it, myself. So far, it's sounding pretty fab.

If you're unfamiliar with Bryan Scary and the Shredding Tears... They're a brooklyn-based progressive/psychedelic/pop/rock band - very creative and eccentric music. Their album "Flight of the Knife" is definitely worth checking out.

I haven't the slightest idea what you're on about, but to answer your original question, yes, you are.

We all are  8-)

I knew it.
