Gear Corner / Re: Guitarists ... Your recomendation for a compressor pedal
« on: September 15, 2009, 02:09:43 PM »
The MXR for me too, if I was ever to go back to using a separate pedal - it's simple and effective. I actually own a Boss one which I haven't used for years. It sounds reasonable but there are too many controls.

I haven't tried the Keeley compressor (modelled on the old Ross unit) but it is meant to be the dogs' danglies. Pretty much anything Keeley does is good!

Compression is always a problem for rack stuff as it works best in front of the preamp and sounds truly awful in the FX loop. For years, the only multi FX unit that allowed you to do this was the Lexicon MPX G2 (which I use specifically because of that), however I believe there others now.

I have Dear Dead Days as my ringtone.  :D

At 129 Euro for registered Reason owners, it's a steal. At the moment, I use a hardware Line 6 unit for guitar sounds, so the built-in LIne 6 stuff will be a boon. I use Protools LE and, whilst Reason plugs into it, sometimes it can be a bit fractious. To have everything in one package with seamless integration (presumably!) is just too tempting not to try. Sure, it will never replace Protools, but I don't think that's the market that it's being aimed at. The interface is a bit humpty-looking too, but then again Reason has never been the (insert name of good-looking person of your choice here) of sequencers.

Has anyone else read on the DT website that Frost* are doing a third DT support slot in Lisbon? Or has this been covered elsewhere on the forum?

Anyone going?

Although I don't get the Men Of Tain bit

One for the guitarists, Mouse: 'The Sixteen Men of Tain' is a stonkingly good song and album by the astounding Allan Holdsworth. Check him out on YouTube. His music is not always the easiest to listen to but his playing is awesome  .

I saw him last year in one of his increasingly rare forays to the UK and he was as jaw-droppingly good as ever. When he started the set, he was so nervous that his hands were shaking. Nice to know that even someone of that calibre still gets nervous - it gives the rest of us hope!

And I'm fairly sure I heard one of them working on "The Sixteen Men of Tain".

Thanks, Geetar. You made my day with that one!  :D

Went to see It Bites in Glasgow last night. Is it just me, or does anyone else think that Johnny Mitchell is he hardest-working musician in the world? Imagine all the complex songs that he has to learn to sing and play for different bands, and he churns them out note-perfect every time. Good on ya, JM.

IB were good, but again suffered from a crappy venue which imposed a 10pm curfew, which stopped them doing an encore - much to the bemusement of the crowd. There was no announcement made that this was the case, I only found out about the curfew later.

As much as I love JM, IB without Frank D are just not the same. Not worse, just different. I saw IB in their heyday supporting Robert Plant. Now Planty was brilliant, but I have to say, IB blew them off the stage!

Yep, I'm a Dan fan too. Saw them in Glasgow last time they toured. Not sure I'll make it to any of the gigs this time.

I've got every CD and DVD he's released.

Was 'The Road To You' ever released on DVD? I've only ever seen it on VHS, and even that's hard to get.

I'm loving Upojenie at the moment. Anna Maria Jopek has a gorgeous voice. In fact, the rest of her is pretty gorgeous too!  :D

Zero Tolerance - Brave, but.........unlistenable. Sonic Youth rate it as a favourite album of theirs, which briefly made PM cool with the alt. kids.

Song X - I'll maybe get into it when I'm about 66 if I work hard at it!
