Other Bands / Rook (another post-Freefall band)

Hi guys 'n' gals

Had some requests for some old Rook tracks so have uploaded these to my Soundcloud page:

http://soundcloud.com/jonboyes

There are 12 tracks. The originals from the "Judge & Jury" EP and a load of others unreleased as yet (including a cover of Turn it On Again).  Rook was a band put together after Freefall which included Simon Godfrey, Julian Garner (from Kick) and myself. It's far lighter than Freefall and you can tell that we were heavily influenced by It Bites (especially from the endings...) ;)

Unfortunately Simon spontaneously combusted before we could commit him to tape so these recordings feature Carl Sampson (ex- Casual Affair) on drums.

Enjoy

Hello guys n gals.  Sorry to resurrect this thread but hey, guess what I found lurking in an old mates cassette box.....

Yes, that's right it's some bona-fide Freefall tracks.  I had lost mine after multiple house moves and it would seem so had everyone else in the band <cough>! But a visit last week to the UK saw me hook up with my old mate Julian Garner. We were in a band called Rook together with Simon post-Freefall. I will master up some Rook tracks this week and upload those to my page too. Very different, lighter more It-Bites(y) feel to Rook.

It would appear I had provided Julian with a cassette copy of some Freefall stuff back in 1994. So we spun it onto CD, I've squashed it and poked it with Reaper and various plugins and uploaded to my Soundcloud page just for you lucky people.  So finally you can all see where we all emerged from and probably remark, thank god you all moved on from that stage...!

Warning, this is not for audiophiles. A 20 year old recording off a 17 year old cassette doesn't sound the most pristine thing. It has some lovely wow & flutter in parts too just to add to that analogue authenticity.  But it gives you the essence of Freefall Mk2, the pomp, the grandeur, the overuse of bloody reverb....grr... ;)

So.... without further ado.  Ladies and Gentlemen, may I present to you Freefall from 1991. May God bless her and all who sail in her:

When the Heart Beats Faster
Play for Voices
Surface Tension
Hellstate (the original heavy version - not the one on 'Thrown')
Freefall

Enjoy!

Great to see the guys having so much fun up there - looked a blast.  Great videos from the crowd too - thanks for those.

Nick looked really comfortable which must have been entailed a great deal of hard work to learn that set.

Great stuff all round.

Now then.... I don't post a lot here but this deserves a wider audience.

My better half Sarah has just done a couple of press releases for a band called Northern Kind who I have to say are superb. Listen to these guys and you're back in 1980.  Cue up the track "Electric to me" first - if that's not Madge then...hey..

Its a gorgeous synthfest of a sound with a great female vocalist and lovely production.  So if you're into 80s Electro/retro in any way  - have a listen:

I'm sure the Jemmeister will truly appreciate the sounds here knowing his love for all things vintage.

Andy,

That was a really great way of looking at it from the very beginnings of scale theory. You're a really natural teacher.

Altogether now, after 4 in Ethel#Maj.... ;)

Jem has played this tune many moons ago....

Back in Freefall days we did a Rush medley that started with YYZ, moved into Tom Sawyer then a bit of La Villa Strangiato and finally back to YYZ to finish. Always went down well!

Hope they do it at the BOTY gig - I'd love to see it.

Me too (even though I live up here now in exile)!   Got my tickets last week so I think they are still for sale.   Not been to the Montgomery Hall before but it looks a bit like Peter Kay's club in Phoenix Nights
