Frost* / Re: How did you discover Frost*?
December 16, 2010, 10:58:56 PM
I hadn't heard of Frost* before I went to see Dream Theater at Southampton. Me and my friend got there late, just as Frost* were kicking off I was buying a DT t-shirt, went into the main hall and stood there for the set, but the sound was so crap that I didn't really hear anything (apart from Jem's intro of "this next song is about the dangers of time travel").
But then they played The Other Me, and I couldn't help but sing along even though I'd never heard it before!
I then pretty much forgot about them for a few months, and it was only when I got bored with my record collection that I went in search of something new, and the name Frost* suddenly popped into my head.
I went to my local record store and ordered Milliontown after I'd found out the name of it on the web at school, and it now turns out that I was very lucky to have been able to buy it (and later, the special edition of EIMA) for a tenner!
And that was it- I was hooked.

Announcements / Re: The Worm Cathedral With Jem Godfrey

I think it's great how you can really hear how these songs influenced Jem so much in his songwriting for Frost*, and that song that's in mono (Goodbye 20th century? can't remember the artist now- too pissed) has a really prominent Tinyfish sound to it (sounds a bit like The June Jar).

Fantastic stuff

Part 2 please? ;)

Gear Corner / Re: MIDI drums help!

A really nice kit that doesn't break the bank is the Alesis DM10 Studio Kit. It's got all the I/O you need, 4 tom pads with rim triggers (which you can assign any sound you like to), a snare pad with rim trigger, kick pad, 2 crash pads, a 3 zone ride pad, and hi-hat pad with pedal. All of the snare/tom pads have actual tunable drum heads on them for getting the sort of stick response you're after, the crash and ride pads have choke triggers, and I know you don't need it, but it's got a cracking sound module too.
It seems to be going for around the £700 mark new, but I'm sure you could find a cheaper on on ebay, etc.
Just a suggestion. :)

Quote from: "Mouse"I've finally got Pro Tools up and running (I had a few problems getting it to play ball). I'd just like to say RAWK! The first thing I did was run a grand piano through a drawbar organ's rotary to get that Floydy Echoes sound. Love it.  :D

Oh and Gav, I am jealous of your fine looking organ. ...Nope, nothing wrong sounding about that...

These limericks should be Frost* related!
Oh no, that idea's terribly dated,
We have to progress,
Which is why it's called Prog, yes?

I feel really annoyed that I can't physically help, because I just don't have any recording gear!

Frost* / Re: New Frost* Report!
November 01, 2010, 08:51:10 PM
Quote from: "gr8gonzo"I would struggle to find a single thing I didn't love about Frost*. The music? Brilliant. All of it. Not a turd in the bowl. I love that EIMA is so different from Milliontown and TDL heads down yet another path. Bands that make the same album over and over aren't exactly progressive, now are they? The reports? Brilliant. Informative and hilarious. The rest of the world should take notes. The guys? All tremendously talented. Jem? Ridiculously good at everything he does and an incredibly generous man when it comes to his fans.

Easily my favourite band of the past 5 years, but then, I like accessible, rock-oriented prog more than old school prog (says the host of a show called Experiments in Mass Appeal).

I totally agree with you, Gonzo. The balance of serious music and humour is perfect, in my opinion.
Also, I can see why some people may not take TDL seriously, but I think that the odd querky section in a song really helps to maintain interest and keep the music moving forward. I can think of too many bands who's music I've stopped buying because it's just got too predictable. Frost* is not one of them.
