Announcements / Flying Machine hits Twitch.tv
July 27, 2017, 10:30:09 PM
Holler!

After thinking about trying to do some Frost* Report style dealies, we've decided to modernise the idea a little, and we're going to be streaming out tracking and writing sessions live on Twitch.tv!

So if anyone is into prog, then you should definitely check it out.

Anyone?
Prog?
Anyone?

Hopefully I can download bits and edit them into highlight reels, which will be more like the intended Frost* report ripoffs. So there's always that.

Frost* / The unfair of the common ant
May 28, 2016, 11:41:29 AM
So I mentioned about Jem's ELP remix to a friend the other day and remember it sounding utterly uncredible. Does anyone know if there was a cheeky/leaky version put out somewhere?

Gear Corner / The Bass to end all Basses.
December 24, 2015, 11:58:53 PM
So I recently decided that since I'm a grown up making money from playing bass now in a function band, I'm going to do the responsible thing and save that money for when I need it.

No.

That did not happen.

I bought this.

And it looks like a piece of want and plays like a rumbly jesus. Oh how I love it so.

And as a result. I'm writing all the new Flying Machine stuff with the bass tuned to AEADGC. Godspeed cover artists.

Also merry christmas.

So Flying Machine has been doing a thing recently. And it wasn't long into the thing-doing that I decided that I'd set some rules for myself very early on in the process, and I remembered that one of the First things I decided about Worlds Apart was that I wanted it to be longer than Dream Theater's A Change Of Seasons (23 minutes). In the end I ended up with a rather lovely 26 minute affair that I was super happy with and now my scope has taken on new heights. The new album is currently planned to consist of a single 1 hour long song. Or piece of music maybe, it can scarcely be called a song.

My question to you then, Frost*ies, is:

Do you thing anyone would listen to it if it were an hour long?

My argument is that I'm really not writing it to be consumed by anyone else, and I really think I'd rather have a single dirty great 1 hour long thing than splitting it into separate tracks, because then it's no  different from any other album where the songs go into each other. But my drummer is insisting that it's a thoroughly terrible idea.

Opinions?

Has anyone seen the new page that's up on http://www.planetfrost.com/? Very odd indeed.

So there's a Huddersfield based company called Rattle and Thud that do music videos and they asked me to do one (do a video, not just to do one.), so I wrote a song just for them and performed it on a video. With a guitar and everyfink. I'm buzzing super hard, you guys :)

Friends Of Frost* / Flying Machine is back in the air!
October 26, 2015, 02:56:22 PM
Or at least we've recovered the wings from where they dropped off and we're slowly trying to work out which ends to glue them on to...

Writing some new proggy epic stuff and hopefully it'll be a proper release. Hoping to do a bit of vlogging for it as well Frost* report style, or at least using the soundcloud as a blog of how it's all going. The first teaser section idea is up there now. Just gonna have bits and pieces as they get written or recorded and hopefully get some public involvement in how the new album is coming together. You guys made my feel super confident with releasing Worlds Apart, so I'm looking forward to seeing what this yields!

Woop!

Announcements / Another Solo Competition!
September 12, 2014, 03:20:44 AM
Hello, all! Sorry about the repost for all of you who are following Flying Machine on Facebook, but I thought I'd post in here since the last time I did I had a marvelous response and a reyt good time going through all the entries!

"Competition time!

Hello everyone, we're back again with a new competition in the run up to the release of our new album 'Roots' later this month.

For those of you who haven't partaken before, this is how it goes:

This backing track is the solo section from 'Overdose', one of the tracks on our new album, with the lead guitar part taken out.

Your mission, if you should choose to accept it, is to download this backing track (it's free to download directly from http://soundcloud.com/flying-machine/overdose-solo-competition-backing-track), import it into any recording software you have, and lay your own solo over the top of it!

Your solo can be on any instrument you like. Guitars, keyboards, vocal, triangle, bass, bouzouki, ukelele, oboe, clarinet, violin, theremin, spoons, etc. Anything is viable!

The backing track is 16 bars of 4/4 timing at somewhere in the region of 130bpm-ish. The chords move between Dsus2 and Csus2/A, but it's based around A minor, so that's a good starting point if you're stuck, or not into following chords.

Once you've got a solo done, bounce it down and send it over to Flyingmachinetheband@gmail.com, and we'll upload it to the Soundcloud page.

So once you've done it, head over to our Soundcloud page (http://soundcloud.com/flying-machine) and have a listen to the other entries and Like all of the ones that you think are cool. The one with the most likes by the end of the competition will be declared the winner, and will receive a free copy of the new album! (Cue audience woo)

The deadline for submissions will be midnight on the 30th of September and the winner will be announced on the 1st of October, so get recording!

And for any of you who don't play an instrument, but are just in it for the music, have a listen to the entries on our Soundcloud and make sure you vote for your favourite!

In the meantime, keep a keen eye out on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/FlyingMachineBand) for more updates.

For those who don't win the big star prize, the album will be available as a physical CD and also as a digital download from Bandcamp (flyingmachine.bandcamp.com/) for the low low price of £5, and all the profits from the sale of the album will be going to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust (www.cysticfibrosis.org.uk/).

You can also buy our last EP 'Worlds Apart' from there for £1. Profits again are being donated to the CF Trust.

Thanks very much for participating, however you choose to do it. We truly couldn't do any of this without you guys, and we really appreciate it.

Have a well good time, and good luck!"

TL; DR - Do a solo in A minor...

Announcements / Solo Competition, again!
September 11, 2013, 10:53:33 PM
Hello again, chums! Just a quick plug for Solo Competition that's currently going on on the Flying Machine Soundcloud page.

For those of you who missed it last time, the idea is that it's a just-for-fun thing, whereby people download the backing track (https://soundcloud.com/flying-machine/solo-competition-3-backing), overdub a solo, and send it over to flyingmachinetheband@gmail.com so I can upload it, and then we vote by liking the one we prefer when it's all done! No prizes, I just always think it's fun to see what other people would do over the same backing track, I get some really nice, different ideas every time!

This isn't limited to guitars, by the way. Feel free to do a keys solo, or sax solo, or an anything solo. Make it interesting!

Good luck to all who would participate :)

Friends Of Frost* / The Banana Challenge...
July 30, 2013, 03:45:59 PM
If anyone fancies a hell of a challenge, I've tabbed out the guitar and keyboard parts from the Banana Challenge section of Worlds Apart! I'll put some backing tracks up soon, but for now, if you want to test your mettle against some ambitious prog, go here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.228718243943251.1073741831.152310098250733&type=3

Ask Frost* / New Radio 2 Jingles
July 30, 2013, 12:26:21 PM
Wowza! Just watched the video and everything is sounding pretty spectacular. I'd quite like to hear details of the jingles' development, though, if anyone involved has the time to blog it. Would be well interesting.

I was wondering about the snare sound in some of the more electronic ones as well, and it sounds like that ubiquitous dubstep/D&B snare. As cool as it sounds, I do wonder if it'll stand the test of time like the previous jingles did, just because of how quickly electronic music moves. No offence meant by that, obviously, just something I was wondering about.

Also, if I was Jeremy Vine, I'd just watch the part of the video where the singer belts 'JEREMY VINE' into the microphone again, and again, and again...

Announcements / I just made money from my music...
April 21, 2013, 10:56:11 AM
Yes it's true! I won't spam y'all with links because they're in the Friends of Frost* subforum already, but my band released our first EP earlier today and a few people have bought it.
it's not like I'm making a lot of money, but this is one of the happiest days of my life.

That counts as an announcement, right?

Friends Of Frost* / It's here!
April 21, 2013, 10:52:58 AM
I know I don't post much nowadays, what with uni being busy and all, but I have just released the EP I've been working on for the past 5 years.
It's definitely the best thing I've ever done.
So go and give it a listen, maybe even a download if you're feeling generous (it's only a pound, which is a good deal for 25 minutes of prog).I'm finally selling my music and it's a real dream come true.

https://soundcloud.com/flying-machine/worlds-apart

http://flyingmachine.bandcamp.com/

and it will be available on iTunes and Spotify within a couple of hours.

Very very happy Rob.

Ok, so here's a preview, and I'm not sure I like the mix. I have about 7 days until the hand in date (it's a university project) and I can't tell what's missing from the mix. Can anyone give me any pointers? I'd really appreciate it :)

If you mosey on over to the Flying Machine Facebook page, there awaits a snippet of my latest project to be listened to!

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Flyingma ... 0098250733

I'm having an absolute blast recording this. I just got the bass part back today (hence the excitement!), and it sounds incredible.

This section is a 6 finger tapping section, on both bass and guitar and the first half is in 13/8. After that it changes between 6/8 and 4/4/ a few times. REALLY hard to play, but definitely satisfying to hear.

In terms of mixing, all I've done so far is roll off the low end of the guitars and the very high end of the bass, but I won't hide behind the 'oh it's not mixed yet' excuse, because I think it sounds pretty good anyway!

Enjoy!

Friends Of Frost* / Solo competition!
February 19, 2013, 10:22:39 AM
I'm holding a mini solo competition (as some of you will know from facebook and twitter spamming...)

Any instrument is allowed, but so far it's looking like mostly guitarists, as I expected. So far we have Jim Sanders of Tinyfish, and Mik Crone of Lorenza Woods getting in on the action, me, and a few guitarists I know around facebook. The backing track along with all the current entries are on the Flying Machine Soundcloud page.

Download the track, record your solo, and email it to https://soundcloud.com/flying-machine

I've had to give it some serious thought, and it's really hard.

I have however, come up with some ideas of what to look for.

1. I want it to be something that will lead straight to the band page if you google it, and we'll be the first result, so maybe a made up word? But then you have the problem of autocorrect, so it can't be too similar to an existing word.

2. I want it to begin with an A or a number, so it's always at the top of iTunes when someone logs in.

3. It must be easy to spell (no stupid spelling changes like swapping an I for a Y, it's not the 80's anymore)

4. you should be able to spell it just from hearing it.

5. Absolutely no 'the something's and no 'adjective noun' ones.

At the moment, I' have a few ideas with my drummer. I will post more if I think of any more...

A Thousand Times Before
Aprise
EarthRise
10000 Clocks
Flying Machine

It seems really lame to lay them all out like this. I think all band names seem lame until you just pick one and stick to it...

Friends Of Frost* / Acoustic song in 7/8!
January 01, 2013, 09:30:32 PM
I was challenged to write a song for just acoustic and vocals in 7/8, so here it is! There are a few cockups, but it's pretty good. There's also a few bars of 4/4 for a bit of respite :P

https://soundcloud.com/rob-rideout-music

It's the second one down, City of Hopelessness.

Enjoy :)

Hello! I want to get a bottle of wine for my other half for christmas from Maynard James Keenan's Winery, only they won't ship to England, so I was wondering if I could have it sent on from someone on here.

I'm not sure of the logistics, or whether it's even a good idea, but I think it would be really cool.

Obviously, I'd pay for the shipping of it from wherever you get it to where I am, and I'd be in your debt!

Any takers? Or is this a bad idea...
