Gigs / Defence of the Realm - Summer's End
October 09, 2010, 10:36:03 AM
OK, thought some eager beavers may have beaten me to it (barring Mike's Photo's) but alas it seems I'm the first so here goes.......................
First up, hello to everyone I met (Dena, VitP(Sorry for all the 'missed ideas'(camo tshirts etc)!!!!), Pedders, MooBass, plus a few whose names I didn't catch or can't recall) , equally big hello to those who you whom I was 'aware of' (couldn't really miss Fogeyspasm is full fighter pilot garb, despite the heat, Mouse and MikeEvs and to those whom I missed too.

Anyway, on with the gig.
The Resonace Assocaition were up first - an instrumental duo playing guitars and theremin over some preprogrammed beats and backing. Entertaining, but I think that by not having any vocals they didn't seem to connect with the audience. But the opening slot is always going to prove difficult for any band, and I thought they did well.

Next up Tinyfish  - as Simon pointed out fronted by 'the first Godfrey to come out' to which the reply came that how come it wasn't headline news that Simon was 'out' and that it also implied Jem had done likewise!!! Cue some swift backtracking from SG and 'don't tell the wives!!!'
I've seen them before 'in the flesh' (have got the Poland DVD tho') and was mightily impressed. The sound was really good and despite a few technical problems from Simon's guitar synth they played a great set which should have won them some fans of anyone not already aware of them.

But from the brisk trade being done on the merchandise stall (manned, or should that be personed, by the lovely Nellie replete in Frost*ied army uniform) a lot of people were here to see the 'DotR' - lost of Frost* shirts in the audience as you'd expect.
And they didn't disappoint - a nice mix of Frost* tracks (including the live debut of Dividing Line), Kino and Marillion, plus a few other which I can't put my finger on. plus the kind of banter and general madness that we know and love (and any veterans of the Esoteric shows will know the added lunacy these 'unofficial'  Frost gigs bring).
(Toomy) hats off to JM for managing to get a room of 400-ish people to crouch down during the 'air raid' - only bettered by the sight of watching 400-ish people trying to stand back up again afterwards!!!
And Jem's intro for JM left the latter in tears and lost for words - another piece of Godfrey genius..............
Pete T. looked to be having the time of his life, nailed some pretty complex songs (TDL, BLM) and really got into the spirit of the gig - his presence also meaning we got an awesome rendition of Afraid of Sunlight.
Also quality voice over bits done by Matt Berry (from the IT Crowd and Aboslute Radio).

BUT a MASSIVE pat on the back to Corporal Blunders. Having met him several times over the last few years he was my 'bookies favourite' to land the drum stool when TBE departed. Alas, it wasn't to be at the time, but all good things come to those who wait - and boy was it good!!!
It's got to be fairly nerve wracking to start your first gig with 3/4 of your new band by playing a song like The Dividing Line, which was bang on (with a new middle section featuring Jem and his loop station vocal thingy) and he settled down nicely into the gig. His sense of humoour (as you'll have seen from the Frost* report) is a natural fit for the rest of the guys and the biggest compliment is that by the end of the night I was no longer thinking of him as 'the new boy'.
Anyone who was worried about how Frost* v3.0 will sound come December, fear not - the 4-piece line up last night sounded immense and I have no doubt it will be a leaner, meaner gigging machine by then.

In fact, in the words of almost everyone - we can KEEP CALM and MELLOTRON

Gigs / Defence of The Realm - Pre-Gig Topic
October 07, 2010, 11:18:49 AM
OK, I thought I'd label this one so it's fairly self explanatory ;)

I'm going tomorrow, but alas unable to stop for the weekend so it'll be a sober one  :(
What sort of time are people planning to get down to Lydney - is there anywhere good for a pre-gig meet ???
I appreciate that some of the 'weekenders' may be restricted by the buses etc

So, in keeping with the general theme - roll call........................

Just a quick review of last night's Frost* alumni gig  ;)

Destroy All Monsters (as they have now decided to call themselves) were great - helped by an immensely good job on the sound by Mark Westwood. The material sounded much heavier than on the CD, in a good way. Tim Churchman was also 'double shifting' playing for both bands - and doing a sterling job. One gripe was the crowd size - I reckon only about 20-30 people were there when they started and this hadn't grown by too much by the end of the set.
Spoke to Dec afterwards and he said he felt they weren't the 'right band' for the audience, which as it was mainly 40-somethings who remember going to see aRK in the 80's might be the case, but I'm sure they will have picked up a few friends with such a solid performance.

By the time aRK hit the stage the crowd had filled out more, although still on the low side. I have a recollectioon of seeing them way back when and have never quite worked out if I had seen them or had just convinced myself that I had!!!
But several tracks in I was able to confirm that I must have seen them based on the familiarity of the songs.
The sound was superbs (as for DAM) and the whole band bounded around the stage with a sense of enjoyment and vigour that made even Dec question whether this really was a band that hadn't played together for 20 years. If you see them, be prepared for lots of theatricals, and a great night.

The CD 'Wild Untamed Imaginings' went straight into the car on the way home, and I haven't stopped smiling yet.

Be sure to check them out if you get chance before the December dates with Frost*, but I'm going to put money on now, that the Frost*/aRK gigs will be one of the top nights of the year, enough to keep you going through Christmas and into a Frostie* 2011!!!

Other Bands / Jackdaw4
July 07, 2010, 09:39:14 PM
Having found several non-prog bands via other members of this site I thought I'd give a shout for Jackdaw4, the current vehicle/brainchild of Willie Dowling.
They've just released 'The Eternal Struggle for Justice', their 3rd album - and they describe themselves as 'eclectic rock/pop'.

I think there are similarities between Willie and Jem in terms of songwriting and vision, although in different genres.
Willie is also the songwriting partner to Armstrong & Miller (BBC comedy sketch show) so has a 'mainstream' outlet akin to that of our genial host.

So check them out  at //http://www.jackdow4.com
There's even some free downloads via bandcamp :D

Ask Frost* / TPE Snowman
July 05, 2010, 06:41:53 PM
Have to say I'm truly loving the TPE version of 'Snowman', but have a couple of questions for either Jem, of those of you that were lucky enough to be there.

I'm guessing that the trusty loop station was deployed, but how much was looped 'live'  ?
Was only Jem 'present'  or were some of the harmonies that come in later the other guys ?

...............re-unite his old mates ARK for a new album and tour, including supporting Frost* at the end of the year - website is now up at //http://www.arkmusic.co.uk/

And to keep the Frost* links going, I think Tim from Darwin's Radio is playing the tubs!
See you at the Robin in September for the Album launch then!!!

This is genius - this guy has done the whole of DSOTM in 8-bit NES type format, kind of like the Moog Cookbook albums.
Great fun and entertaining.

Announcements / Nick D'Virgilio
December 16, 2009, 08:31:43 PM
Firstly, apologies if this isn't considered as Frost related - although given the sterling work he did for FrostFest I consider him part of our "family".
ANyway, over on his site //http://www.ndvmusic.com he has a nice announcement that he is going to be the drummer for a new Cirque De Soliel tour/production!!!!!!

Recognition for an absolute genius drummer, but alas makes it less likely I can see him at Drumfest 2010  :(

Still, nice to see they boy doing well.

Other Bands / Steve Thorne - Into The Ether
October 14, 2009, 07:53:14 PM
Anyone else got this album yet ?? (Pedro can stand easy - just been over to the IB forum so I know you've made a purchase!!!)
Features Frost* links via JM and NDV contributing along with Gavin Harrison, John Beck and many others.
Only listened to it once so far but it's brilliant, almost Fish/Marillion-esque in places. Highly recommended.

As they say in all the best ads, if you only buy one album this year, buy The Philildelphia Experiment ;)  :!: . If you buy two, get this as well.

Other Bands / Vertical Horizon - Burning The Days
October 10, 2009, 06:45:55 PM
I was over at Neil Peart's website the other day (as you do) and saw an ad for an album by a band called Vertical Horizon to which Mr P has contributed some drumming and also lyrics on a couple of songs. So off I tootle and listen to a few song clips and am now the happy owner of 'Burning The Days'.

It's a cracking album, almost Porcupine Tree-eqsue in places. Would recommend a visit to their sites to see for yourselves //http://www.verticalhorizon.com/

I LOVE the web!!!! :D

You also missed my personal favourites, the pool cue (slightly warped from being left up against the radiator for too long) and the peanut/bombay mix bowls (since the smoking ban there are no more weighty ashtrays to be had!!!!)

Although it's really just a big advert there are some frankly quite scary stats in this vid regarding people's habits when it comes to this ol' web
(and now I'm adding to it by posting the link on here, doh!)

Ask Frost* / DT Gig CD's????
June 09, 2009, 08:25:41 PM
Tell us O mighty Creme de Custard (that's you Jem)
Will there be the oft mentioned gig CD's for the DT shows ? And if so, will us poor unfortunate blighters that can't make the gigs be able to purchase them via t'internet??

...........//http://www.classicrockmagazine.com/news/he%e2%80%99s-selling-his-soul-for-rock%e2%80%99n%e2%80%99roll/

Josh Freese (LA session drummer for pretty much everything) is making his new album available with a variety of novel 'bonus packages' - I rather think he's extracting the michael from the bonus package genre, but it got me thinking what could/would the Biscuitmeister be tempted to do for money???
 ;)

Frost* / Biggest Disappointment with EIMA...............
November 30, 2008, 05:09:27 PM
No I'm not going to moan about the mix (which sounds fine to me) but rather the lack of one of the 'developmental' songs.

Having watched the DVD I want to know what happened to the Skiing song??? It was a bona fide crossover 'hit' and I'm gutted it didn't make the album................

(Or has Jem sold it to Simon Cowell foir the X Factor winner???) ;)  ;)  :P
