QuoteMaybe Jem can allow Russel to take the good bits of the Derby filming to release a goodbye Frosties video

I'd be happy to sync some kazoo parts to that...that just leaves spoons, washboard, jews harp and digeridoo. Any takers?

QuoteBlunders = genius but...I really don't like those electronic kits. "Powerhouse on a Bentempi" is the only phrase I can come up with!

I think that's mostly to do with the allowed volumes at those shows and the quality of the mic. I've seen Blunders do his demos and the sound is great.

Friends Of Frost* / Re: Songwriting techniques

It's interesting to hear different peoples methods/ways/thangs.

For us (Fushi) it really varies how the song starts, whether it's a groove, chord progression or melody there has to be something hooky about it, and then it tends to grow from there.

I prefer to 'hear' the song in my head so I know where it's going and roughly what it's going to sound like, then it's just a case of trying to explain that 'sound' to the rest of the band! Sally (keyboards, vocals and my dear other half) prefers to get chords down and then fit melodies over that without any need for a direction.

Song structure has a lot to do with a bands sound methinks...for instance we analysed the Kino album one night and it was rather formulaeic. Not that that's bad, or takes away from the songs but it was interesting to see how often they used the same "tricks". Frost music on the other hand didn't seem to have any discernible structure patterns, it just moves from one part to another without any reliance on traditional song structure. The main trait of Frost* stuff is the loud/soft thing...and blistering solos!

Gigs / Re: Gigs in 2011

Well I saw the Feeling on Saturday - they played about 7 songs from the new (unreleased) album and I must say that me and Mrs Gman were rather underwhelmed. The first album was great, the second album had moments of greatness with several 'meh' songs. I'm afraid that the new album is going to be similarly 'meh' with a couple of good songs.

There didn't seem to be anything up to the same mark as Sewn, Join With Us, LIWYC etc etc. I was really looking forward to the new album but now, not so much  :(

Ho hum.

If you like It Bites, you should buy a copy of the Kino album "Picture" - it features John Mitchell, John Beck, Pete Trewavas and Chris Maitland. Top stuff.

If you're in the mood for something a little lighter, I heartily recommend "Wonderland" by Judie Tzuke...it's not prog but it is a fabulous album.

I think I discovered Frost through the John Mitchell connection with It Bites.

"the John Mitchell Connection"...sounds like a jazz band! Nice.

I've always though of Kino as a more technical and harder edged version of It Bites. Chris Maitlands drumming has a little more finesse and subtlety than Bobs imo....both albums are in my top 10 faves. In fact there probably isn't a week that goes by without listening to one or the other.

Just (patiently) waiting for the next album from either band...I need more new music!  :D

Just had a quick look on Digital Village and it seems there are gallons of them. If you dont' get a useful response off here, I'd recommend popping in to your local DV and ask them for advice.

It may be worth considering getting one with midi in/out so you have the option as you can get one with midi for not a lot more.
