Any Other Business / Tunnocks
June 09, 2019, 03:36:11 PM
The inventor of the iconic Tunnock's teacake has been given a knighthood.

Boyd Tunnock was nighted for his services to the confectionery business n the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

The 86-year-old Scot was the mastermind behind the teacake after being tasked by his father to come up with something new.

His Thomas Tunnock Limited firm, which is based in Uddingston, Lanarkshire, produces the snowballs, caramel wafers, caramel logs and Tunnock's teacakes, famous in the UK and worldwide.

After extensive market research, he came up with the idea of using a biscuit base and hand piped Italian meringue on to it before covering in milk chocolate.

It hit the shelves in 1956 and has been a favourites ever since.

Saudi Arabia is the largest overseas buyer but the teacakes produced by the baker sell from Thurso to Trinidad.

At the opening ceremony for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the teacakes took centre stage as dancers dressed in the distinctive wrapper design moved around the main performers near the start of the show.

Sales of the biscuit went through the roof the day after the ceremony.

That year, Boyd was one of the few Scottish business leaders to back the Union in the referendum campaign and is a firm supporter of the Conservative Party.

Dubbed the Willy Wonka of Tannochside, the biscuit maker was awarded an MBE in 1987 for services to exports. He also received a CBE in 2004 for services to charity.

He is the grandson of the founder of Tunnock's, Thomas Tunnock, and other than the two years he spent in national service, he has worked in

the family business since the age of 15.

The firm has an annual turnover of more than £54million and more than 550 employees.

Last year, Boyd was criticised when he donated a Rolls-Royce car to Glasgow City Council.

The anonymous move came as the council faced cuts in public services.

Boyd confirmed he was behind the gift and said he just wanted to do "a good thing" for the city.

Frost* / The Galaxy's guide to the hitch-hiker
March 13, 2016, 11:23:00 AM
My Ford Galaxy is the nearest I can get to a Ford Prefect.
I will be going on a road trip to Spain this week via a conference in Birmingham & Mr Google claims that it will take about 23 hours, which is somewhat shorter than Mr Garmin.
Mr Garmin, may have factored in Birmingham & Paris, more likely a trip via Belgium.
On the off chance that a hitch-hiker may be able to jump into the car, I was wondering if I could make it a bit of a Mitchell fest.
What an opportunity to educate someone  ;D
Do I have 23 hours worth of Mitchell music?

It's the first Sunday in advent this weekend & I'm on AV  :)

I like to unleash some Christmas prog on the congregation, well, as much as I think I can get away with. (Bear in mind, they describe me as a techie......smirk)

Any Christmas prog suggestions?

I've used Matt Stevens, Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman Sky & PRR in the past.

Have a vote on the best small venue

Quote from: NMEVOTE FOR YOUR FAVOURITE SMALL VENUE
Last month, the search for Britain's Best Small Venue in association with Jack Daniel's kicked off once again. Now in its fourth year, the campaign hunts out and celebrates the places and spaces that inspire, encourage and support their local scenes.
We asked you to nominate the best small venues in your area. Those votes have been compiled to form this shortlist – the 11 venues in the running to be named Britain's Best Small Venue 2014.

Frost* / New website?
June 02, 2014, 10:18:20 AM

Website under construction...

It's at this point that people say "check back soon", however in my book "soon" means within 48 hours and there's no way in hell this is going to be ready "soon" so check back before the nights really start drawing in again.

Unless of course you live near the equator in which case, check back before people start giving presents to each other and talking about peace and all that stuff.

Thank you.

Other Bands / IQ - Road of bones
March 19, 2014, 01:26:27 PM
GEP and IQ are very pleased to to announce that the new IQ album "The Road Of Bones" is mixed and ready to go for pressing.

Mike Holmes: "Every time we go to record a new IQ album I tell myself I'll get it done in less time than before, and every time it takes longer... Having said that it was the equivalent of two albums this time. We usually write more than we need for an album and pick the material that makes for the best 'album flow', if you know what I mean, and the rest is often discarded or put on the back burner indefinitely. This time we thought people would be interested to hear all the songs, including the stuff that didn't quite make it onto the main album for whatever reason, so we're doing a special edition with a second disc of the rest of the material."

The Road of Bones is now available for pre-order from the GEP and IQ online stores. The standard edition comes in a jewel case with a 16 page booklet and the special edition 2 disc version is in a 3 panel digipak.

Any Other Business / Advice/help re hacking
December 03, 2013, 06:24:14 PM
I know there are some rather clever Frost*ies out there

If someone had sent an e-mail using my account and I had received a message back to say that the message had been deleted without being read, is there a way to find out who/what/where had sent the original e-mail?

I have a suspicion that "you know who" are sending themselves information from my computer.
This would be backed up by the recipient of the e-mail that I didn't send.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

First Direct arena, Leeds

Kaiser Chiefs

Have to say that I was far from impressed by both the venue and band. The 13,500 arena was far from full. It has been built on the outskirts of the City Centre, away from the Bus and Railway stations, and although it advertises car parking within walking distance, it's not that accessible.
Mandy being a First Direct employee, we headed for the quick service till, which was considerably slower that walking in through the front doors.

The band might be a cue for the return of the Sex Pistols. This was corporate pop rock. A band that looked like it was on a contractual obligation tour. If you are going to look bored, don't be surprised if your fans to look bored. There was a great deal of apathy from a vast number of the attending crowd. The songs are bland. Yes they will have made a fortune from them but where is the musicianship? No solos from anyone.

It would seem I wasn't the only one not impressed http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/what-s-on/arts-entertainment/music-and-gigs/gig-review-kaiser-chiefs-first-direct-arena-leeds-1-6051677

Picturedrome, Holmfirth

Manfred Mann's Earthband

What a difference a day makes. A belting set from MME. A band who enjoyed playing as much as we enjoyed listening. Mick Rodgers was outstanding on guitar and (some) vocals, Robert Hart belting out the other classics, very impressive. Despite looking like an irate Amish preacher, there was some keytar action from Manfred himself, who came out from behind his rig and boogied with the band. You would n't believe he's 72, Mick being a mere youngster at almost 67.
The picturedrome is an excellent little venue which seems to be very appreciated by the bands that play there.

Overheard on the way out
Proper musicians playing proper songs

That sums it up quite nicely

Manfred Mann's Earthband 5 (old gits that enjoyed themselves)
Kaiser Chiefs 0

Is Manfred the Grandfather of prog?
