Gear Corner / I've become Fantomed!

PMT Bristol: Top blokes, to a man. They were so helpful to an old duffer asking so many questions.

In the end they had to concede - It CAN'T make the tea - That's why I got a good price on it.

That and it being their ex-dem model, and the ol' G7 being discontinued and all.

Sonic meyhem - Ahoy!

Gear Corner / Are keytars ever cool?
August 16, 2010, 05:19:36 PM
Seeing the lady Gaga piano in another thread, I was messing with a 3D modelling program over the weekend and had a go at designing a keytar that looks a bit more organic...

And here it is:

Just a thought experiment really, but fun, nonetheless! :)

Gear Corner / Ableton Live and prog?
August 13, 2010, 11:16:03 AM
I have been looking at some Ableton vids online and wondered what you guys thought of it's suitability in a proggy environment (both in the studio and onstage) I can see some interesting opportunities with the Akai controller.

But the trouble is most of the youtube stuff is showing pretty dull 4 to the floor beatz.

Any of you proggites use it? what do you think?

Anyone else seen THIS?

http://www.infiniteresponse.com/

Poly aftertouch, colour touchscreen 7 octaves, and best of all.... It FOLDS IN HALF.

It would go in the boot of the SLK - Yay! :)

Downside is it's $3000. :(

Eddie Jobson has 2.

Gear Corner / Anyone tried the Roland Juno Stage?
July 22, 2010, 09:22:00 AM
I've been looking at some of the demos on YouTube, and it looks like quite a nice board for live use. Anyone used one in anger?

... on the forum.  Every single time I come here I have to log in again.  What is with that?

Mac, Safari 5, blah, blah, Snow Leopard, Blah, Blah, home made black desk with Ikea legs, blah, blah, stuff.

Well...

I have for the past 11 months been recording an album, and I decided to document the process in a blog (I can't think where *that* idea came from!)

It's old-fashioned prog* featuring much hammonde organe, mooge synthesisere, and (horror) mellotrone  (OK Audio Units that *pretend* to be those classics) though my much loved Korg Prophecy makes more than a few appearances. Collaborators from far flung places like Syracuse NY, Norway, Holland and Weston-super-Mare provide variously guitars, sax, bass and drums while I carry out keyboard duties tracking, editing and mixing

Anyway I'm now up to my ears in final mixing prior to sending the project off for mastering (once I've found a mastering house I am happy with  - and can afford! - Abbey Road was a tad out of my budget!) So I thought I'd post small snippets of the final mixes as I complete them...

The first two tracks are in the bag and there are excerpts on the blog:

I'd welcome your initial thoughts :)

*not because I don't like this new fangled prog that Mr G makes, it's just because I think the musical parts of my brain were frozen in 1974!

Gear Corner / Steven Slate Drums - Insane offer
February 22, 2010, 11:44:26 AM
//http://www.audiomidi.com/Steven-Slate-Drums-EX-Edition-No-Brainer-Deal-P13601.aspx

//http://www.stevenslatedrums.com/

Offer ends at the end of Feb.

I bought these over the weekend.  It cost like 15 quid.  Normally about $100.  Downloaded and installed it - The process is a bit arcane to say the least.  But it is insanely good for rock drums.  The Zep kit is nice, but I like the Slate Hybrid kit.

And what's nice is with very little faffing about I was getting a killer drum sound out of it.

Weekend after next I have organised a tracking session with my long-time drummer mate in a beautiful acoustic space... It will of course be gutting if I end up using Logic's drum replacement feature to use the Slate drums instead of the real thing, but somehow I suspect the Sennheiser/Rode/AKG/Shure stuff I have available won't quite match the stuff Mr Slate used.

Gear Corner / Got some new toys for my Birthday...
October 01, 2009, 03:01:16 PM
I have been spending the last few weeks getting huge amounts of fun out of my latest virtual toys.

NI B4 II and NI Akoustik Pianos.

I could never afford (or house) a genuine Hammond, A Steinway, a Bechstein and a Bosendorfer...  But these virtual recreations are lovely! (if not ACTUALLY as good as the real thing ;) )

They really are splendid.

And also now obsolete

Like almost the day I unwrapped them Native Instruments removed them from their current catalogue.

This happens to me a lot.  I get a new toy and the company in question stop making it.

EMU Proteus PK6 (and cousins) - one month after I bought mine
Alesis Fusion 8HD - 2 months after I bought mine
Alesis Multimix 16 Firewire - I managed 9 months before they obsoleted it
NI B4II and Akoustik Pianos - The same *&()dy day I got mine

Moral of this story.  FInd out what's on MarkOne's shopping list before buying it  .

Frost* / Another forum newbie
September 11, 2009, 10:27:47 AM
Hi all...

Late to the party, I know...  But, I've been loving Frost since I picked up Milliontown, sometime last year, and I love Experiments...

As something of a key-tickler myself, I have huge respect for Jem's chops.

And you guys have a forum too...

Cool
