Other Bands / Porcupine Tree at the Royal Albert Hall
« on: October 15, 2010, 12:12:50 AM »
on the train back after seeing the pt lads. Cracking as always and spot on with every lick, fill and whimsical observation of society. However, felt let down by their setlist. It was brilliant but i'm sure i read somewhere that this was the last time they would play the incident in its entirety. Only the first half made an appearance though :( the venue was HUGE and added to the atmosphere. Not really a sound expert but i could hear the drums so that was cool. Any other frosties there? Should have set up a pre-gig topic really. Ah well. Apparently it was recorded so i hope to buy the cd soon.

Also the girlfriend knew that the singer was called steve. Aww bless her.

Ask Frost* / Being in the band
« on: October 11, 2010, 03:30:36 PM »
Quick question for anyone that can answer it. When were the members of Frost* session musicians and when did they become a band?

Am I right in thinking that Milliontown was session work from JM, TBE and JJ, while EIMA was a proper band (i.e. profits were split)?

Is Blunders being hired? Is he cheap? Does he do kids birthday parties?

Gear Corner / Gear Lust - Autumn Edition
« on: September 24, 2010, 03:35:58 PM »
Thought I'd get this one started up as we haven't had a good chat about nifty gadgets and wonderous instruments for a while.

I'm really getting back into my drumming now after buying a new HHX china and Gav Harrison's rhythmic illusions book. Really would love a new snare from the Black Panther range by Mapex. Hopefully this beauty:

Its an all rounder really as thats kind of me in a nutshell. It's relatively cheap but still expensive for my current financial situation.

Hey ho, student loan, due next week and gone the week after

Gear Corner / Drum Microphones
« on: August 17, 2010, 06:15:50 PM »
Ok so I know theres a few drummers and a few sound engineers on the forum so if any of you could help. Where is the best place to *start* with drum mics?

I am a student with a low income (0), is there a cheap alternative? Grizzlying in mind, I don't particularly want to buy a mixing desk (although I have the feeling that it would help towards the best drum sound)

Also I have a small multi-track recorder with 2 quarter inch mic inputs. Whats the best option there? An overhead condenser and a snare mic?

Any reccomended microphone brands?

Any help is greatly appreciated!  :D

Mrs Mayonnaise painted a lovely prog painting so I thought I'd share it here  :D

Gear Corner / Question for Jem bout drums n stuff.
« on: August 05, 2010, 12:57:11 AM »
In the latest frost reports theres a section where you're playing a bit of drums on a roland snare and kick it looked like.
I always assumed you used yer keyboards and whatnot for drums.
Any reason for this? If its simply a case of being able to play faster singles then thats understandable.

What do you use for drum samples in your demos and such too? Are you as good at drums as everything else?

Anyone else feel free to jump in on this too  :)
(Thought this was more of a gear thing than an Ask Frost thing)

I'm only a nipper in the grand scheme of things but has a forum song been attempted yet?

Theres guitarists and drummers and synthists and more on the good ship frost so I don't see why not.

Of course if its been attempted, where is it? Was it good? Did it nosedive?

How bout it? :D

MOD EDIT: Renamed thread.

Ask Frost* / Jem on Top Gear?

Heard rumour of Jem being in the crowd on last nights top gear, could have sworn I saw the cheeky chappys head between May and Hammond during the news section.

Gear Corner / Akai Synthstation 25
« on: June 09, 2010, 07:46:00 PM »
I'm on a roll here but have any of you guys seen the Akai iPK25 or Synthstation 25 as its now being called?

I'm quite interested as its also a normal midi controller and theres a touchscreen and a bouncy ball filter and stuff and jingles. If it can control other ipod apps then I'm sold once more. Octave buttons on the left seem odd though.

Any veterans think it would be worth getting, baring in mind that I am fairly novice and just find this interesting rather than full time profession or w/e. I also have an income of around none.

If there's a forum law about getting over excited at everything, I do apologise.

Gear Corner / Kore Player Help
« on: June 09, 2010, 02:54:28 PM »
Yep it's me again.

I downloaded Kore Player and kontact at the reccommendation of someone on this forum and just can't get any sound from Kore. I like to connect my microkorg and use the midi to muck about from time to time on Kontact and absynth 5 demo but no luck from kore. The midi meter doesn't even light up.

I've looked on the official forums but it just looks like everyone gets bollocked by a guy called ew.

Any help?

Gear Corner / For 50 how could you not?
« on: June 06, 2010, 10:35:39 PM »

Looks like quite a belter for the long car journeys. I've already treated myself
I have tonnes of respect for Korg making synthesis just a little bit more accessible for everyone.

Except the WaveDrum.

Thats just rubbish.

Said the drummer.

Gear Corner / Drummers! Be where are you?
« on: April 05, 2010, 02:01:09 AM »
Well pipe up then fellow drummers. I know there's a few of you lurking here.

I myself am a drummer of 7 years being a teacher for one of those. My kit consists of a Mapex M Birch (which I bought precisely two weeks before the new Meridian line replaced it) and an array of Sabian cymbals and cheaper Stagg cymbals for experiments (stacks etc).

I'm currently looking into a secondary crash but would like to know if anyone has any advice to advise me with.

Also the 14 new Mapex snares. Any one got one? I quite like the sound of the fast back.

And I'd hate to be chatting bout all this here acoustic-y stuff on such a wondrous synthic-y forum.

So the Korg Wavedrum? Yes it's back if you hadn't heard  :D

Gear Corner / MicroKorg
« on: March 22, 2010, 10:34:10 AM »
Just wondering if anyones got any experience with the MicroKorg, XL or otherwise. I bought one not too long ago but have not had chance to really get to grips with it (Uni student).

Any cool tricks or idea that you have? Favourite Pre-sets?

Oh and thanks for finally letting me on this absolutely spiffing forum
