Economists are generally people with a fixed idea of how the world works, who then set out to find a bunch of numbers in the wild as proof. However, a lack of decent empirical data is generally no obstacle to an elegant theory; or even, evidently, zero predictive capability.

Nevertheless, let's not get carried away. The predictive power in the ramblings of entirely untrained armchair speculators isn't enhanced by the failures of economic theory either.
