oh my I think I just soiled myself.

http://www.apple.com/logicstudio/

And figures not enough time to run to the Apple store before work :(

rogerg

yup.

checks credit card...

SerFox

I actually don't think I'm remotely interested...

Seems to be.. following Record?

"Yes we can put in some lovely time stretching stuff, let's chuck in some guitar amp and effects models, lets make it easier to edit takes on the fly..."

Eh. I'm happy with Logic Studio 8, thanks.

P.S. Could Apple please stop releasing new software without announcement. I knew about Reason 4.0 months before it's release so I knew, and if I hadn't bought `Reason 3.0 months and months previously I would've waited. With Apple stuff, they just bring it out, BAM! I only got Logic in January...

Fuck sake.

Best use of the "F" word I've seen in a while. Made I larf! Good job I wasn't drinking tea, or beer or wine.....
"F#?K OFF, GRANDAD!!!!"

RWA

Who cares?! I'm on Windows......  ;)

sawtooth

Well thats me out of the equation until I can afford to replace my Powerbook. It says Intel only on the specs for Logic 9.
Only to be expected i suppose with all this elastic time malarkey

Shame though, cos Mainstage looks a lot better for live with all the audio record & playback bits and bobs. Better get saving up before Logic 10 arrives  ;)

SerFox

Im either going to blag a copy of the uni for chips, or wait until I get a mac pro set up and get pro tools or logic 10. I have no need for the new features in Logic 9. Just because it's one number mroe than what I have now doesn't mean I need it straight away.

Not to fear!! Reports are that L9 is universal binary. Someone on Gearslutz has it running on his G5.
I seem to remember hearing that it's not "supported" meaning you could be stranded without
technical support.  Not sure about the other apps at the moment. I imagine there will be more
peeps getting it this weekend.

After looking through the manual there are some things I'm going to find useful .
I'm going to my local Apple store later today and getting my upgrade. There are
200 improvements going on under the hood and A LOT that they don't mention
on the website. From what I'm reading it's MUCH more than a few things just
'bolted-on'. I'm really looking forward to the new grouping features and new/better
tool management. Finally I'll be able to setup a PT style smart tool.

Drarok

Hmm, I currently have Logic Express 8, and they says you can upgrade from Studio 8 to Studio 9 for x money, or from Express to Studio for y pounds. But they don't say if that's Express 8 or not. Worrying.

I really want the new guitar thingy, that looks ace. I often find myself struggling to get a decent sound from my guitar parts.

Slightly on-topic:
There's some smart bods on here, am I doing this all wrong?

I currently have a Boss GT-8: http://www.roland.co.jp/products/boss/i ... 8/GT-8.jpg

I plug the headphone output of that into he Line In on the Mac, and record like that. Should that sound OK, or do I need to run it through a real amp for the tone? I know so little .:(

Worry not my friend.  The upgrade to Logic Studio 9 goes for anyone with Logic Express 8 or
Logic Express 7 .  FWIW I've heard that Express 9 now has Space Designer and surround now.
You might even want to check it out and see if it's enough or go fer the full blown studio 9.

BTW  I just got my upgrade this evening. However, I've been on the road all day working
out of town and I'm feeling too wiped out to forgo the long installation.  Looks like an
early rise on my day off tomorrow. I'll report back my findings after I've had a chance
to take it for a drive.

Drarok

I caved. :(

(Coincidence: the long sleeved top I'm wearing is the Frost* one. :))

Spoke to the chaps in the shop, and they reckon similar to you, EVP. Logic Express 7 or 8 and maybe 6, but they weren't sure.

Installing now, it's a big mother trucker. 9 DVDs in total, though some are demos. You have to install the main app to your boot drive for some reason, but you can tell it where to put the ~38GB of loops and stuff. I need more drives! Boot is only 250GB, and there's 3 500s in the other bays. Bah!

Install is indeed taking quite some time, been about 25 mins so far and it's not even asked for DVD 2. Oh dear. :(

Ahh interesting, thanks for the info EVP.
I have a sneaking suspicion though, that although it may RUN on a Powerbook, ultimately it'll be an unsatisfying experience. I remember my track count going down significantly between versions 7 and 8, because i did a comparison loading up the same tracks on both versions.
So I still think the way to go for me at least, is stick with 8, save for a decent Macbook Pro, and then get 9. Or 10  ;)

Does anyone know if the 'bounce in place' function will actually print the audio for software instruments (or multiple track bounces) into the song itself, replacing the original tracks? If so that would be a real time saver for me, as I like to free up resources by combining parts of the mix into stereo bounce groups. I find saving the bounces out and loading them in again on new tracks can be a bit of a faff.

Yes I just spent some time doing this. you highlight the track, and choose Bounce track in place
from the track menu (or shortcut) and a dialogue box pops up. You can select "multi-ouputs" and
choose to create new tracks and mute the original ones. You also have the choice of including
any plugins inserted and weather or not you want Volume/pan/automation included.

Then it does it offline much like the freeze function. I did it with an EZ drummer track
and it bounced individual stems from the EZ's multiple outputs and created new tracks from them.
It was really quick and smooth. There is a problem though. It doesn't work on a L8 session
for some reason and Logic crashes. If you open a brand new session that you start from scratch
it works fine.

The bounce region in place function works the same way only bouncing what you want
on the track instead of the entire track. Just highlight the regions and away you go.
It works fin on my L8 session files just fine.

I've been messing around and I haven't even really got into the really cool stuff like the
flex audio and guitar stuff!  I'll report back with more info.

Thats a lot more HD space than I have!  It took me about 2 1/2 hours to install everything.
Word of wise you may want to consider deleting your prefs files for the apps.  All my plugins
and VI's appear to be working ok so far.
