A bit of a techy question but why did the setlist have instructions "D50 On!!" for Snowman and "D50 OFF!" for Tall Ships?
I thought I saw you using the D50 in other songs so I'm guessing this refers to something other than the power-switch on the D50...or was it just that?

Yes I'm curious as to the inclusion of the D-50 for these shows.

I owned one ages ago and dare I say I miss it!

Jem

God! You lot don't miss a trick do you!? ;)

It refers to the input on the Fantom. I had the outputs of the D50 plugged into the Fantom, for Snowman, the solo sound was a patch I made on my recently acquired (and beautiful  :D) D50. For the rest of the gig, the D50 was just triggering sounds off the Fantom via Midi hence the note to turn on/off the inputs on the Fantom. Otherwise Tall Ships would have had a massive lead sound playing the last chorus' a semitone sharp of the song (we did Tall Ships a semitone down, IB do all their songs a semitone down live, betcha didn't know that!)

So there you go. You did ask!

when I bought my gear oh so long ago, I had to decide between a D50 and the Ensoniq SQ80.  I've been very happy with the Ensoniq, but I have always wanted a D50.  someday....

Pedro

Thanks, Jem.
You are good you know, dealing with us inquisitive types with such care.  :)

haha iv learn essentially eveything about gear from frost* so far. my lecturer mentioned how good mellotrons were the other day and i chuckled quietly to myself for a while. it was a good day.  :)

I used to have the PG-1000 programmer for my D-50 and that was part of what I loved
so much about that synth. It made it easy as pie to edit and create patches.

Same here! Everything I know about music technology now started from watching those Frost* Reports. Jem is a fantastic teacher to me, who is very thick in this field.  :D

What the deuce?!

Is that everyone tuned down a semitone, or does everyone have to learn two versions except for the keyboarderist?

You can detune guitars too

Bah. Where's the challenge in that?

Only one semitone? That's nothing! Porcupine Tree play Trains three semitones lower live than it is on In Absentia.

It makes it easier on JM to sing night after night.

Yup! God bless the transpose button.

That said, we tried the set a semitone down once and I had to spend an entire afternoon tuning all the samples down using Serato Pitch'n'Time in ProTools else things like Black Light Machine would have been slower as well as lower.

But it all sounded shite so it was a complete waste of time.
